The Blair-Johnson Library ? This library, overseen by Renee Howard, was established to enrich lives, build community and foster success by bringing people, information and ideas together. The library is being developed to engage our congregation & community through family and youth development, health and wellness, and financial literacy. EXPECTATIONS As Academic Life Ministry leaders, we have three expectations. Our goals are to instill priority, passion, and prayer. We believe that these three simple words will transform the members of Sugar Creek into the Christians that are well pleasing to God. Priority Christians must understand and value the importance of advancing academically in God?s Word. This starts with coming to church services on time. There are many members invested in planning and teaching Biblical curriculum, but members must make attending, learning, participating, and studying their priority. This should also overflow into each of our households. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 says, ?Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.? Our vision of raising the next generation of Christian leaders is dependent upon this. Passion We make God our priority when we make Him our passion. Matthew 6:21 says, ?For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.? How can you become passionate about something you know little about? Passion is the driver of the heart. When we learn about God?s will for us and desire to make heaven our home, we will diligently seek after him. (As an additional side note, passion can be powerful and contagious. Hang around Christians who are passionate about serving God and studying His word and see if it has an effect on you.) Prayer What will get us there? God! How will He get us there? Prayer! Pray that God helps you clear away all the obstacles and see through all of the distractions that are keeping you from participating in the Academic Life ministries. Let God know that you Him to know that He is the # 1 priority in your life. Pray that your calendar clears up so that you can take the DMA class on Wednesday night. Pray that you can get your family on board with waking up fifteen minutes earlier so that your children can make it to Sunday school on time. Pray that you will feel confident and competent enough to teach a Church Academy class. Pray that you will become more passionate about learning more about God?s Word. Pray that you will stop hiding the gifts God has given you and serve the Lord in a ministry. Pray for spiritual maturity. Pray that you will take part in raising the next generation of Christian leaders, who will honor God in our theology, culture, and practice of the gospel. Pray for Academic Life. May the Lord bless you as we take this Christian journey together.
The Difference Maker By John C. Maxwell Brief Book Summary: The Difference Maker is an excellent novel that spells out the single characteristic that can enhance any given situation. It explains in detail that attitude is the difference maker and how we view our situations, ultimately impacts how experience pleasures or pains of life. If we live life with a great attitude and look for the positives even in adversity and trial, we will always come out better than we went in and will end out on top. He dissected what attitude was, where we gather our attitudes from, and explained that attitude has a lot to do with how we see ourselves. It also discusses what our attitude can and cannot do for us, as well as pointing out that it can be our greatest asset. The entire book discusses optimism versus pessimism, and a wise person should choose to live life with a positive mindset- the difference maker. What bones did you spit out? The book was outstanding, but one thing that truly spoke to me was what is The Difference Maker. One quote at the end of his book and throughout is that ?Attitude isn?t everything but it is one thing that can make a difference in your life.? To a point I agree, actually I agree with almost everything in this book. What I realized halfway through this book was that the true difference maker is Jesus Christ. He makes the difference in my life and in the lives of so many people every day. I told myself yes attitude is a difference maker, but praise God, I have a true relationship with the man, the one, the only Difference Maker- who gave us life and can truly take it away, the Alpha and the Omega. I am so happy and blessed to have read this book and as he said, I encourage everyone especially teenagers to read this book because our outlook on life and circumstances can truly lift us or bring us down. How does this book align with the Bible? This book aligns with the Bible because it speaks of being grateful in any situation. I Thessalonians 5:18 speaks about this- Give thanks in every circumstance for this is God?s will for you in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 5:20 states -Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name our Lord Jesus Christ. Another scripture that comes to mind is Philippians 4:12-13 when it states ?I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me. The book spoke about this the entire time- not referencing God as much as he could, but reminding us that we should be content- and in order to do this we must check our attitude so that we can make a difference in our lives and others. Personal Application- The personal application for me was to check my attitude even more. It reminded me look at myself and see how my thinking is lifting me up or pulling me down. It also reminds me to reframe every situation so that I realize my attitude is a difference maker. This could be when I am looking to change jobs, have to stay in my current job, suffer sickness, hardship, death, or whatever it is, my attitude makes a big difference in how I move on from that point and also how I succeed. I know that my Father in Heaven is the TRUE DIFFERENCE MAKER, and because of that I can look to him from whence cometh my help! He is the one I can look to when I need to get my attitude in the right place, and I am having difficulty getting it there. Or he can help me when I am down, or troubled to get out of those ruts. Jesus is the true example of the difference maker because in every situation, his attitude was beautiful. Even on the cross he was concerned about others. If I think on this, then the little things that I go through on this earth cannot compare. When I look to the Heaven I am preparing to go to, nothing on earth, should cause my attitude to go haywire. It also helps me because I realize that my attitude matters at work, and in the community, but it is also just as important that my attitude is a difference maker at home. My attitude impacts my husband and children. My attitude can make my husband?s life with me pleasant. I am also reminded that my children are watching me, everything I do, and how I respond to different situations. As a great influencer in my children?s lives, I want to have the right attitude, so that they are seeing Godly decisions and a healthy, loving attitude. This will help them to know how to have a ?difference making attitude? once they leave my home. How can you use what you read at Sugar Creek? We can share this book with the members and remind them that attitude is a difference maker. Besides The Lord, our attitude can make the difference in any given situation. As a congregation if we are all thinking positively and are optimistic even during change, mishap or any given circumstance, then this will make our church ? the members more resilient, healthy, happy, supportive, and willing not only to help ourselves with the right attitude, but to also help the community at large. This book has the potential to be a blessing to so many people- so that just as the Bible says we can rejoice in the time of adversity because the Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 we are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. Because we know this as Christians, we should all possess the right attitude and by doing so, we can be the healthiest Church, the type of church that is a difference maker in our community, society, and beyond. Extra: One thing that I liked or a suggestion he provided was that when he was a boy, his father would pay them to read books. I liked this idea, because our children have to read so much, but if we can get our children to read books that will change their lives, why not offer an incentive. Sis. Give time to your most valuable relationship and serve others gladly and express love and appreciation often Generosity: if you desire to become generous and make generosity a part of your daily life then do the following. 1) give others your money: wherever your money is that's where your attention goes. Haven't you found that to be true. If you invest heavily in the stock market you're probably check the financial page or your earnings statements frequently. Don't wait for prosperity to become generous. A person's level of income and desire to give have nothing to do with each other.Some of the most generous people I know have nothing materially.And I know plenty of people who have a lot to give but no heart to give.the average personal income in the state of Mississippi is the second lowest in United States ranked by state. Yet the State is ranked sixth in charitable giving.In contrast,New Hampshire is ranked sixth in the average personal income. They ranked in charitable giving as a percentage of income,they're forty-fifth Find a reason to give every day: It may be easy for people to find reasons not to give.But it's just as easy to find good reasons to give.You just need to look for them go out of your way to find reasons to give.Look for a compelling cause.Find an urgent need. Look for a group that is making an impact.Seek out leaders you know and believe in.Give to an organization you respect and trust.They're all around you; you just need to make it a priority Value: To make something out of yourself, you need to be willing to change for without change, there can be no growth. The problem most people have is that they want things to stay the same yet also get better. Learn to enjoy the journey of growth and put yourself in a growth environment make it your goal to grow in someway every day. as reading any books the person has written.Growth: make a commitment to change. The only thrill worthwhile is the one that comes from making something out of yourself. To make something out of yourself, you need to be willing to change for without change, there can be no growth. The problem most people have is that they want things to stay the same yet also get better. Learn to enjoy the journey of growth and put yourself in a growth environment make it your goal to grow in someway every day. To make your growth intentional,strategic, and effective, you need to think it through and plan it well.
