FOREWORD
Khyber Medical University was established in January 2007. It prioritized the development of allied health sciences. The establishment
of KMU Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPM&R) was the first step in fulfilling that mission. In 2009 the first
batch of 25 students was admitted. The classes of B.S Physiotherapy were started in the building of KMU Institute of Public Health
& Social Sciences. Khyber Medical University always desired to find a separate building for this institute. The provincial Health
Department was approached for the allotment of recently vacated building of PIPOS situated in Hayatabad Medical Complex. The
health department very graciously acceded to the demand of KMU and the said building was handed over the KMU for its Institute of
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The personal interest of Secretary Health Dr. Sohail Altaf is highly appreciated in this regard.
IPM & R will be starting the third batch in February 2011. Because of the high demand the seats for the next academic session have
been increased to 30. This was mainly possible because of the availability of space in the new building. Khyber Medical University will
take every step to further improve the quality of education in the institute. Khyber Medical University accepted all changes, tasks with
firm determination and total commitment. I hope the Institute will provide every opportunity to both its students and staff to further
their professional development.
MESSAGE OF VICE CHANCELLOR
Khyber Medical University believes in developing a multi-dimensional comprehensive health care approach
encompassing all the four elements of health i.e. prevention, promotion, curative intervention and rehabilitation.
We aspire to include a health care team approach at all levels of health care delivery for a comprehensive health
care delivery system.
KMU identified the gaps in our health delivery system and promoted the idea of filling these gaps. Physiotherapy
and physical rehabilitation are a very important components of health which have been neglected so far. Institute of Physiotherapy
and rehabilitation is the pioneer institute, in this vital but uncared for field of health, in the country setting higher standards for
others to emulate.
The institute is housed in a spacious building with all modern amenities- a state-of- art auditorium and learning resource centre.
Emphasis has been on the provision of facilities for hands on training. Efforts are underway to make this as the most well equipped
centre for physiotherapy nationally. The semester based system of education with a modern demanding goal orientated curriculum
ensures high standards. The strength of the institute lies in her well qualified, trained and motivated faculty.
I welcome students for a challenging experience where they will not only be equipped with the latest concepts and modern skills but
also inculcate humane values to make them a better human being.
Director Message
Welcome to Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Khyber Medical University
Physiotherapy is a branch of healthcare science that mainly concentrates on the physical aspects of an individual’s
healthcare, by treating their physical disorders. It works towards this by maintenance and rehabilitation of the
individual’s physical activity, which is nothing but bringing back the lost activity to near normal perfection.
Physiotherapist uses physical agents such as mechanical energy (Exercise), heat energy (infrared radiation
therapy, ultra violet radiation therapy) electrical energy (TENS, Electrical Stimulation, interferential therapy,
diadymanic current), Sound energy (Ultra sonic therapy) , Electromagnetic energy (Shortwave diathermy,
microwave diathermy).Throughout development of the physiotherapy profession, training and techniques have
continued to change and improve. Gifted pioneers in the field have contributed richly to the profession’s literature and field organizations.
Physiotherapy now commands wide recognition and well-earned respect with many young people expressing interest and making their career in
the profession.
Physiotherapists can work as self employed professionals, entrepreneurs or for employers in the rehabilitation service system, such as hospitals,
Rehabilitation centers, healthcare centers, research, private practices, or with the social services, and in the institutions that care for mentally
disabled as well as the special schools for disabled children.
Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPM&R) was established in 2009 by Khyber Medical University which offers four years (Eight
Semesters) B.S program in physiotherapy. Before this students of KPK used to get admission in JPMC, Karachi where only four seats were allocated
for the whole province. It is the first institute of physiotherapy in this province conducting graduation in physiotherapy. Our institute is well
equipped with all facilities. We have enthusiastic, hardworking and sincere faculty which guide students in every aspect.
I feel proud when I see the enthusiasm in our students with a desire to excel in the field of physiotherapy. I am sure that opportunities will come
their way from Pakistan and abroad to excel and prove their mettle in the area of rehabilitation and health care.
