WIZO CELEBRATES 96 YEARS
For 96 years WIZO has been empowering and supporting
women, children and the elderly in Israel.
WIZO’s vision is a Zionist, humanistic Israeli society based
on equal opportunities. WIZO is focused on education and
welfare for women children and youth, in cooperation
with the Jewish Diaspora.
WIZO now has 250,000 members worldwide who each
contribute in their own way to WIZO’s key goals which
include providing for the welfare of infants, children,
youth, women and the elderly and advancing the status of
women in Israel.
Since WIZO’s formation almost a century ago, over 800
projects have been established throughout Israel and one
in four people in Israel now enjoy an improved quality of
life and better opportunities as a result of WIZO’s work.
As Israel changes and WIZO adapts to provide solutions to
new emerging social needs and developments, one thing
has remained the same. That is WIZO’s ongoing mission
– to work for the betterment of Israeli society to ensure a
strong and flourishing State of Israel.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Rosh Hashanah is at our doorstep and we are all trying to tick things off our ‘to do’
list: buy presents; send Shana Tova cards; place our order with the Kosher Butcher;
buy new clothes for the kids; do our shopping and send those group What’s App
messages wishing Happy New Year to everyone in one go.
All this for that precious moment when we will sit with our loved ones around the table
for Rosh Hashanah dinner, realising we have reached the finish line where we end one
year and start a brand new year. Every year is the same.
So what does ‘new’ really mean?
Does it mean that every year we have to embark on a totally new adventure and embrace something we have never
done before? Or is it just about having a new take on the things we already do.
For us WIZO members, the answer is clear. Every year we do the same thing, supporting the organisation we believe
in, but every year we also embrace new initiatives and respond to the new challenges we are faced with. For us in
WIZO, the Jewish New Year brings to our attention the 40,000 WIZO children and youth starting their journey in our
schools and kindergartens around Israel. For those children it is not only a new year but a new beginning with new
opportunities that will change their lives and their families’ lives forever.
Through WIZO this new generation of Israelis can have a chance to become the contributing citizens we want our
State to have. Through our nurturing and support, in partnership with the government, we are able to close the social
gaps in Israeli society and provide each one of our citizens with equal opportunities. We have a proven record of
success, providing services for the past 96 years with generations of political leaders, army officers, doctors, artists
and contributing successful citizens benefitting from WIZO’s support.
However, what is a new challenge this year is how to help the 800,000 children living in poverty in Israel. We cannot
ignore this need.
So as we all sit around our table overladen with gefilte fish and other wonderful delicacies, let’s realise two
fundamental things – we don’t need to reinvent ourselves every year because we are already on the right track
supporting our State and its people, and that we have to embrace the new challenge of fighting poverty in Israel.
We will face this challenge together as members of a strong movement we are so proud of: The Women’s International
Zionist Organisation - WIZO.

2016 saw the
Changing of the
Guard of our
WIZO Leaders
extraordinaire
both in Israel
and Australia.
Tova Ben Dov President World WIZO - A Zionist
and a woman who both empowered herself and
enabled further betterment of the world around
her.
“I place great emphasis on Zionism. It was my great
motivator when I started at WIZO and today it is even
more important, not only for Israelis but for the Jewish
people.”
January 2016 marked the end of Tova Ben-Dov’s
term as President of World WIZO, a milestone in her
impressive 50-year career with the organisation, which
began on the auspicious day that she signed up for
WIZO membership at her local branch in Herzliya.
This career included her leading and enriching the
movement in positions as varied as Chairperson of the
Building and Development Department, Treasurer of
World WIZO, Chairperson of the World WIZO Executive,
and of course her four-year term as President.
To an outsider, the only thing more astonishing than
the time span of Tova’s work for WIZO is the fact that
all of it was done on a volunteer basis. Aside from
the well-deserved recognition she has received over
the years from within WIZO, Tova is also the recipient
of the Yakir Tel Aviv Prize, in appreciation of her
contribution to the city of Tel Aviv.
The name of World WIZO and Tova Ben Dov are
synonymous. She was a great leader and a great
visionary. Her dedication to WIZO is paralled by few.
We were delighted to welcome Tova’s successor,
Esther Mor to Australia in May 2016.

Gilla Liberman’s outstanding six year term as
President of Australia concluded at the WIZO Australia
Federal Conference in May 2016.
Gilla led WIZO Australia to tremendous highs and
accomplished all her goals culminating in the jewel in
her crown, the complete refurbishment and rebuilding
of the School of Life at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim.
Gilla can be proud of WIZO Australia’s achievements
during her Presidency, which have touched the lives of
so many. WIZO Australia is responsible for 14 of WIZO’s
800 projects in Israel and during her term of office has
substantially improved a number of these facilities to
benefit the women, children and youth using them. As
well as representing Australia at Conferences in Israel
each January, Gilla would come home with a shopping
list of needs. These needs guided the fundraising for
the coming year.
We often use the metaphor of the WIZO bus- sometimes
we drive the bus, other times we do less and go to the
back of the bus. Gilla will no longer be the driver of the
WIZO bus but certainly does not plan to get off.

In the word of Winston Churchill:
“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by
what we give.”
The WIZO Australia office has been relocated to
Melbourne for the next 6 years with Paulette Cherny
at the helm.
Gloria Newhouse took on with trepidation the
position of leadership as President of WIZO NSW for 5
years. “With time came confidence and understanding
of the privilege bestowed on me” says Gloria
Gloria believed the name of WIZO became
synonymous with excellence, innovation and a
desire to offer something just a little different from
other organisations. WIZO NSW held four wonderful
major functions that really were the talk of the town.
Each one attracted a larger audience than the one
before. Under her leadership WIZO NSW produced an
innovative publication, the Every Woman Magazine,
with wonderful articles in each edition.
The New Horizons Club was successful as was the
‘You’re the Voice Membership Campaign’. Of course
the Sponsor a Child initiative continues each year,
giving supporters the great satisfaction of supporting
a child in need in Israel.
Gloria was a great Ambassador for WIZO. In her kind,
ACHIEVEMENTS DURING PRESIDENCY
WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim
Many improvements were made at the school to better
the lives of the children who call this school ‘home’.
The outdoor areas have been upgraded with many
new facilities such as a hothouse, bbq area, beautiful
gardens and new gym equipment.
New beds in the dormitories, a dentist chair and
hearing aids were purchased. Therapy programs were
introduced. Buildings were renovated.
Day Care Centres
All playgrounds at all our Day Care Centres were
refurbished. The WIZkids Program for improving
computer and learning skills was provided at Raya
Jaglom as well as Sensory Motor Lab. The kitchen and
bathrooms at Chorley were refurbished and new paths,
fences, kitchen, bathrooms and wet corners modernised
at Shikun Mizrach .New toys were purchased for all
DCC’s.
Ray and Tom Mandel Centre for Women and
Children
This was completed and busy with activities for WIZO
Modiin as well as providing counselling services for
single parents, girls and women in distress etc. It
contributes to its own funding from its second hand
shop and through renting out its hall.
Korsunski Youth Club, Kfar Saba
New computers were purchased. Sensory motor
equipment was provided which is very well used by the
younger children who come to the club. The tutorial
rooms were enlarged. Toys and games were purchased.
Centre in Beersheva- Makom Balev
Funds are allocated to this new project to supply
emergency housing for girls deemed to be at risk.
There were the unexpected urgent needs which we had
not budgeted for. WIZO prides itself in being able to
assist in emergency situations and history has shown us
that unfortunately there are emergencies in Israel on a
regular basis.”When special requests came from World
WIZO in times of danger to Eretz Yisrael, we became
superwomen, creating a flurry of activity to enable us to
send extra funds.”

WIZO Project Site Visits
Seeing is believing
Site visits offer WIZO’s guests the opportunity to
witness first-hand the work that WIZO does around
Israel and get an in-depth understanding of how
WIZO’s projects operate and the impact they have on their
beneficiaries.
Site visits let WIZO members see the results of their
volunteer work and fundraising, and motivate them to
continue their work. Unique encounters with children,
youth, women and dedicated staff will turn an otherwise
routine trip into a memorable and emotional experience -
one that will make a lasting impression.

bakery where the students proudly offered us the cookies
they had been taught how to bake. This was a real boost
to their self-esteem, a useful tool for daily living and
importantly providing them with a skill for their future
working lives.”

SCHOOL OF LIFE
WIZO AHUZAT YELADIM
WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim in Haifa, a therapeutic and posthospitalization
residential treatment facility is currently
home to 100 youth suffering from behavioural, emotional
and psychiatric problems. It is highly respected for its work with
the most difficult youth, and offers a wide range of specialized
treatment and educational sessions provided by educators, social
workers, psychologists and therapists. The boarding school caters
for youngsters aged 12 to 18 from across Israel, and is one of the
few that provides residential treatment for post-hospitalized youth.
Treatment at WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim is often a child’s last opportunity
to succeed, after having failed at other facilities.
WIZO Australia is responsible, together with the Israeli Government,
for maintaining this boarding school, and when the need was
recognised, embarked on a 2 year project to renovate 2 of the
3 School Buildings which we called ‘The School of Life’. This
acknowledges that education is the key in assisting children to
achieve a better future.
The renovations included 8 classrooms, 4 tuition rooms, therapy
rooms using art and music, a Media Centre and a Digital Centre.
It also included rooms for a hairdressing and makeup course and
a course to repair computers. The bakery/ kitchen centre allows
children to learn how to be a professional cook or baker. At the
end of the various courses, pupils receive a recognised vocational
certificate to help them find a job. The gardens surrounding the
school have been landscaped and an irrigation system installed.

supporting the wonderful renovation for the benefit of the children
of WIZO Ahuzat Yeladim.

21-26 NOVEMBER
WIZO Awareness Week 2016

Each year during WIZO Awareness Week, we
take the opportunity to reach out to the wider
community. As part of our program, we work
with synagogues around Sydney. Rabbonim include
a reference to WIZO in their sermons and many
synagogues include information about WIZO in their
weekly newsletters.
In 2016 our program commences on Monday 21
November, culminating on Shabbat Chaya Sarah on
25/26 November. Parshat Chaya Sarah encompasses
the essence of WIZO as the story of our Matriarch
Sarah embodies the concepts of giving and kindness.
This year we are highlighting North Shore Synagogue
with a special WIZO Shabbat. We encourage all
North Shore WIZO members to attend this service
to demonstrate our commitment to the wider Jewish
Community.
Executive staff in all departments of our Jewish Day
Schools, and especially The Emanuel School, Masada
College, Moriah College and Mount Sinai College have
been positive about a WIZO representative coming
to speak each year at their assemblies and show a
current short DVD about WIZO’s work. This has been
preceded or followed by events such as mufti days,
barbeques, cookie sales etc where Tzedakah has been
collected for WIZO.
Every year we prepare a WIZO kit for each of the 15
Jewish Preschools in Sydney. This includes information
about WIZO, an activity for all the children to complete
and learning the importance of Tzedakah. Academy
BJE continues to include information and activities
about WIZO in their lesson plans.
We encourage all our members to participate and
support WIZO at their various synagogues.
