Welcome – about us
Crisis Support
KEPS provides a crisis support service
for schools. This work is part of the core
work provided for schools by the Local
Authority and it is not traded. In the days
immediately after an incident we aim to
mobilise the resources available in the
school, and to stimulate and encourage
positive coping strategies through joint
work in the immediate aftermath of an
event. We also work with staff in school
to identify individuals who may need
further long term support.
Where there is a need for longer term
support, referral to an appropriate
agency is made as necessary. Additional
support from KEPS beyond the initial
crisis response is available through
traded services. This can include
Cognitive Behavioural Approaches, or
other longer term support for individuals
or groups.
Our crisis support contact numbers are;
Office hours (9am-5pm): 03000 410100
Out of office hours: 03000 410101
The service also has a range of ways
to support schools to be prepared for
a critical incident. This work is traded
and can include staff development and
support in the following areas:
• grief and loss
• crisis support for school staff
• the impact of childhood trauma, often
particularly relevant to unaccompanied
minors and refugees
• bespoke support for groups of schools
who would like to work together
An extensive range of supporting
resources is available free to schools
in Kent.
Our services
Our range of services are organised in categories.
services that are available across the county to meet your needs.
Consultation (assess, plan, do, review)
KEPS will help you find a solution and
positive ways forward for children and
young people, often by helping to form a
shared understanding of their strengths
and difficulties within their school and home
context. Consultation involves problem
solving discussions with key people
which help to clarify issues and plan for
solutions. Frequently consultation is also
guided by information from observation,
holistic assessments, feedback meetings,
joint action planning and reviewing of
desired outcomes.
Further interventions
We can provide highly specialised
individual work using Cognitive
Behavioural Approaches (CBA), support
you to develop a Mindfulness intervention
in school or if you need to commission
Video Interaction Guidance for a member
of staff or a parent we have staff with
the skills and experience to help. Sound
Progress, a precision teaching intervention
for literacy, has also been developed by
KEPS and is available for schools on line
at soundprogress.co.uk and edukent.co.uk
Building effective teams and practice.
KEPS use psychology to build and
share effective practice across school
communities. Our processes and tools can
help create highly effective teams, support
the planning, implementation and review
of whole school change and undertake
evaluation and research. What difference
is your intervention making? How do you
know ‘what works’ for your school? How
can you implement changes and know
what the impact has been? KEPS can
help with the answers.
Professional development
KEPS provides a range of courses,
workshops and training that have
been written using our knowledge and
understanding of child development and
psychology. Attending our professional
development sessions will enhance your
expertise and support you to be more
effective in your work with children and
young people (CYP). You will learn new
skills, reflect on your practice and build
your confidence to deal with those aspects
of working with children and young people
that can be challenging.
Mindfulness for adults, children and groups
Mindfulness is fast becoming a mainstream approach to managing stress and
anxiety. From politicians to school children, many people are experiencing the
benefits of this discipline which teaches us to be aware and present in each
moment. When we are aware of where our attention is, we can deliberately
change the focus of our attention over and over again. We then have more
freedom and choice and do not need to stay “stuck” in the patterns of thinking
which may have caused us problems in the past.
This introductory session aims to provide a “taster” of Mindfulness through
experiential activities. The rationale and science behind the discipline will also
be explored, and there will be opportunities to consider how individuals and
the school community may wish to develop Mindfulness further as a means to
promote wellbeing. The introductory session to be delivered as a twilight or as
part of an INSET day.
Pay as you go price: £338.25 (Half a day).
Video Interaction Guidance (V.I.G.)
Video Interaction Guidance is a way of working with adults and children to
build positive communication and enhance relationships. Video is used in a
completely confidential, positive, strengths based methodology, that builds
confidence and supports change. V.I.G. has a strong evidence base and is
recommended in many national guidance frameworks as being effective with
children and young people who have difficulties with the early years, social
communication and attachment. KEPS have staff trained and accredited
by the Association of Video Interaction Guidance UK, who can deliver this
powerful intervention with you.
through a supportive and empowering conversation. The intervention can
Families First
Families First is a solution focused approach that offers families who are
“stuck” an opportunity to consider their own strengths and to find their own
solutions, rather than relying on outside intervention. A school can commission
this intervention for families of children who attend that school.
The school is required to nominate its own workers and would provide
administration. An Educational Psychologist would train the workers and
provide pre- and post-session supervision.
Mindfulness Attention Programme
Mindfulness can be defined as “paying attention on purpose, in the present
moment and with curiosity and kindness, to things as they are” (Jon Kabat-
Zinn). It helps train the individual to respond skilfully to whatever is happening
right now, be that good or bad.
There is a growing evidence that regular Mindful Practice can bring about longterm
changes in brain structure and function that improve quality of thought,
feeling and concern for others. Studies within schools have shown it can
enhance well-being and learning; as well as help memory, increase creativity
and improve reaction times.
This programme is specifically aimed at upper Key Stage 2 and lower Key Stage
3 pupils. It involves 8 sessions of around 45 minutes delivered by
an Educational Psychologist alongside a member of the school staff. The
sessions are delivered in a highly practical way. The programme can be
targeted at a specific group of students or can be delivered to a whole class.
BEAT, Beating Exam Anxiety Together
Research into exam anxiety has shown that it can have an impact on the emotional
well-being of students and increase the likelihood of educational underachievement.
The effects of exam anxiety include:
• difficulties with reading and understanding the questions on the exam paper,
organising thoughts, and retrieving key words and concepts when answering
essay questions;
• doing poorly on an exam even though the material is familiar;
• mental blocking.
This intervention is aimed at Years 10 and 11 (for Year 11 students it is important
the intervention is completed before Easter so it does not interfere with exam
revision). The ideal group size is between 6-10 students, and it is thought most
suitable for students who are of at least average ability.
There are 6 sessions, each lasting an hour, along with extra time to conduct pre and
post measures of anxiety. The Educational Psychologist will deliver each session
alongside a member of the school staff. The materials are based on the principles of
group Cognitive Behavioural Approaches (CBA), Mindfulness, and psycho-education.
Pay as you go price: From £1,691.25 - £2,367.75
Appreciative Inquiry (AI)
Appreciative Inquiry is a tool for supporting change and development in
organisations. Working from the principle that teams and organisations are
always effective in some way, even when situations are challenging, AI is
a process of understanding in detail what is working and how it is working
and then using that information to learn about what people can do if they are
feeling stuck or if the team needs to change in some way. AI is a strengths
based approach and can be used with any size of group or team. It is an
effective way of achieving change in a way that values and empowers those
who take part.
Circle of Adults
This is a team approach to problem solving around challenging behaviour and
emotional needs. It offers an innovative and effective model for supporting
children and young people showing difficult behaviour in school combining
many important features; graphic facilitation, group process and a structured
and evaluated framework. The Circle of Adults approach is a 10-step problemsolving
approach, with each step allocated a fixed amount of time. It is
facilitated by two Educational Psychologists and the current research evidence
indicates that the process is valid, robust and effective.
Staff Sharing Scheme
The Staff Sharing Scheme increases teacher effectiveness in the management
of children’s behaviour in school. It achieves this by establishing a whole
school system of supportive and collaborative problem solving meetings. A
Peer Mentoring
There has been much research into the issue of bullying in schools over recent
decades which has shown that the consequences can be severe, including
low self-esteem, absenteeism from school, poor academic attainment and
relationship difficulties. Good peer relationships and friendships have been
found to be important in buffering the negative effects of bullying. Where
friends are lacking, specially trained peer supporters can provide a valuable
service to younger students. Peer Mentoring training involves working with
groups of older students within a school to provide training in key skills
including active listening, summarising, the use of open questions and problem
solving. Kent Educational Psychology Service can provide Peer Mentoring
training for students, as well as the option for on-going support in providing
supervision for mentors.
Psychological supervision for school staff
Supervision is an educational and supportive conversation that can be central
to professional development. It provides a container that holds the helping
relationship and facilitates the development of the supervisee through reflection
and empowerment. Children and young people with increasingly complex
and challenging needs are supported by a range of professionals in a range of
settings including mainstream school. Effective supervision will support these
individuals in meeting the needs of children and young people while promoting
competence and confidence.
Video Enhanced Reflective Practice (VERP)
Video Enhanced Reflective Practice (VERP) is an effective way of enhancing the
way you work with children, young people and adults. Where communication
and interaction may sometimes be difficult, VERP can be useful in developing
your effectiveness. A VERP course begins with a training session and is
followed by three small group reflective sessions, led by a trained guider over
the following weeks.
Action Learning Sets
Action learning sets are one approach that can be used to foster learning in the
workplace. It is a method of problem solving and learning in groups to bring
about change for individuals, teams and organisations. The emphasis is on
learning from experience and then acting on that learning.
The Action Learning Set approach provides a structured way of working in
small groups or 5 to 6 people which can provide the structure needed to help
learn effectively, and improve practice as a result.
We deliver this on a bespoke basis with a minimum time for
delivery of two days delivered as four half days.
Metacognition: Enhancing Learning
There are clear research findings demonstrating that where teachers and
children have a good understanding of metacognitive processes, and are able
to apply these, there is a very positive impact on children’s attainment. The
aim of this INSET is to raise awareness of the benefits of using metacognitive
approaches in one-to-one interactions. Those who take part are asked to
implement an action to support the learning of a child or young person they
teach. The implementation of the action plan can be supported over time using
web-based seminars allowing ongoing contact with the trainer. The course can
also be combined with Video Enhanced Reflective Practice to provide an even
more powerful and rich learning experience for those who take part.
Pay as you go price: £1,353 (Two days)
Introduction to Mindfulness
Communicating with Children (CwC) offers practitioners an opportunity
to enhance their professional skills in addressing the emotional and
communication needs on children and young people.
improves communication and interaction through viewing and discussing short
video recordings of real-life situations which show the practitioner engaged in
successful interactions with a child or group of children.
Solihull Approach for Schools
Training your school in the Solihull Approach will not only develop staff
skills in engaging more effectively with young people and their families but
it also provides them with a shared language to describe their work (vital for
multi-agency working), increases their understanding of how emotional and
behavioural difficulties develop within families and helps them identify trigger
points for early referral to other specialist services.
Pay as you go price: £676.50 to £2,367.75 (One day to three and a half days)
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing is a counselling technique that has been used
successfully with young people who have not necessarily expressed a desire
to change their behaviour or who may have had strong reasons for maintaining
particular behaviours. Concerns about pupils’ behaviours can sometimes
originate from others. Motivational interviewing can be used as an individual or
small group intervention to help young people identify their future needs. It can
also be used to plan approaches that will enable them to achieve their personal
goals.
Change occurs as pupils are supported to develop their thinking over time
and to consider any discrepancies that exist between present beliefs and
their desired outcomes for the future. The programme is comprised of hourly
sessions delivered over eight successive weeks. This course is designed for
use with secondary age pupils, although it could be adapted for use with older
primary pupils.
Ideally the course would be delivered by a member of the Kent Educational
Psychology Service alongside school staff who would then be trained to deliver
the program with other members of their own organisation.
website based programme that schools can subscribe to. Based on precision
teaching Sound Progress provides opportunities for distributed practice and
detailed ipsative assessment, giving information about a child’s phonemic
skills. Visit www.soundprogress.co.uk to read more information, listen to a
recorded introduction and find details of how to sign up.
This additional support package will help you get the most from the website
and will provide some theory and tips in how to use the materials most
effectively. An introduction session gives staff an overview of the website and
how to use it. Follow up sessions provide a forum for discussion, problem
solving reflection and developing practice. The psychologist leading the
sessions will be able to access the anonymous data stored by the website
which you can use to help evaluate the impact the programme in having in
school.
Mind the Gap: Narrowing the Attainment Gap
Research suggests that there is a gap between the academic achievements
of boys compared to girls, which has remained stable over a number of years.
Among certain age groups the gap in Kent is wider than the national average.
This half-day INSET for school staff considers the current research into gender
differences in academic performance and aims to develop an understanding
of contributing factors to these gender differences from a psychological
perspective. The INSET considers how to raise boys’ achievement, from whole
school initiatives to strategies for individual students.
Grief, loss and crisis support
In any class of twenty children/young people there will be five or six who are
dealing with some aspect of death, grief or loss. Failure to recognise and deal
with emotional needs can lead to poor academic performance or challenging
behaviour and make effective teaching more difficult. For some children
bereavement affects concentration, attendance and attainment, and these
effects are not always short term. (Akerman and Statham 2014)
This course consists of a day training event followed by two online enhanced
learning modules to help you use and implement the ideas in school. Course
leaders and a learning group will help you develop an action plan, developing
practice in your school. The online learning modules will include live discussion
sessions with the course leaders so that you can ask them questions about
anything you have implemented in school and a guided tour of an extensive
new free online resource bank.
