National Donut Day is a happy celebration for many reasons, not just pastry-related ones. For The Salvation Army, it is a
day of remembrance. A day when we recall the distant past, of young women volunteers, then-called “donut lassies,” who
journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean and provided meals and friendship to American troops in the trenches of World War I.
It is also a day in which we keep the needs of American troops, who are engaged with internal battles of homelessness,
addiction and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, in our hearts and minds. The Salvation Army’s Haven program, located on the
West L.A. campus of the VA is the “tip of the spear” for our outreach to the men and women who have worn our nation’s
uniform and who now find themselves in need of help.
Like all good “military” action, it is better to go into battle with allies. For the past eight years, The Salvation Army’s Haven
program has had no better friend than CSM Bakery Solutions. A company at the forefront of the business-to-business bakery
industry, CSM Bakery Solutions has sponsored a National Donut Day celebration every June, which has provided muchneeded
financial resources to the veterans The Salvation Army serves and media attention to the work that is being done at
the Haven.
“CSM Bakery Solutions’ commitment to our veterans is inspiring,” said Lt. Colonel Kyle Smith, Divisional Commander of
The Salvation Army in Southern California. “With them as allies, our ability to provide essential social services to veterans
continues to expand.”
