LEARNING AT WGSS IS…
Everywhere! With the recent introduction of the redesigned curriculum from the Ministry of
Education, many of our teachers are working hard to change the way learning is happening in their
classrooms. With a new emphasis on teaching skills vs. just content, our teaching staff is being
encouraged to move from a more traditional teacher-centered, stand and deliver type model, to a
more student-centered classroom where students are empowered to take ownership over their
learning. Teachers are also being encouraged to incorporate more hands-on learning opportunities
in their classroom where students are able to actually create things and demonstrate creativity,
collaboration and critical thinking. Another aspect of the redesigned curriculum involves bringing
in outside experts and community members to help students learn not only about the subject they are
studying but also about potential career paths they could choose to follow in the future. Over the
past week, all of this learning was on display at WGSS in a variety of different classrooms and
departments around the building. We have showcased a few examples down below through
pictures, and we also invite you to check out the Principal’s Blog on the front page of our website
where you can see more examples including some video of some of our student learning. As a
school, we believe it is important to share the learning that is going on in our building with parents
and community members. As the year goes on, we are going to try to continue to showcase student
learning videos and pictures on the blog on our website and also daily through our school Twitter
account @sd35wgss
On Wednesday, Ms. Epting’s Textiles class had a visiting Professor from VCC talking to the
students about the VCC Fashion Design Program and then collaborating with the students on
designing a dress. Check out our website to see Mr. Keen’s Criminology and Law classes who were
visited by members of the Vancouver Police Department on Thursday.

GATOR POD AMAZING RACE
On Thursday, our Gator Pod 8 Program participated in their Amazing Race. Students in the
program were divided into teams and worked through a series of events and activities where they
had to apply their learning from their English, Social Studies, Science and Computers classes. In
addition, the students had to apply collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity
skills as they worked to solve each task.

CAINES ARCADE
On Tuesday, our Gator Pod 8 students and our Gator Aid 9/10 students visited James Kennedy and
brought along an arcade of games for the JKE students to try out. These arcade games were
designed, created and built by our WGSS students, completely out of cardboard boxes. The level of
creativity and sophistication in these games was absolutely amazing as was evidenced by the level
of engagement, fun and sheer joy that the students at James Kennedy experienced while testing all
these games out. This is also a great aspect of community building with our feeder schools as our
students interact with the younger students. Special thanks to Ms. Mckay and Ms. Keyworth who
teach the majority of these students and coordinate the Caines Arcade activity each year!

HISTORY 12
Mr. Kitteringham's History 12 students were all dressed up and putting their acting skills to the test
on Tuesday October 18 as they started the annual Treaty of Versailles role play trial. Paper balls
showered the vilified German delegate as she took the stand and emotions ran high in the courtroom
as the dynamic duo of Devon Vecchio/Rene Clairoux of the defense clashed with the formidable
team of Russell Epp and Sam Vendramin of the Prosecution.
GUIDED LEARNING SESSIONS AT WGSS
Tuesday November 1
We are very excited to be offering our first round of Guided Learning Sessions at WGSS on
Tuesday November 1 during Flex. These sessions give teachers and students an opportunity to
pursue a topic of learning that they are passionate about or interested in. We have 12 different
teachers offering a variety of unique sessions for students. Information about these sessions is
available from teachers and on the bulletin board in the front foyer. Students who might still be
interested in signing up for one of these sessions can do so on Monday at school. Sign up sheets
showing what spaces are left in each session will be posted on the bulletin board in the foyer. We
plan to continue to offer GLS opportunities on the first day of each month throughout the year.
Students who do not sign up for a GLS will simply continue to use Flex as they normally do.
However, we do hope students will find something they are passionate about and get excited about
learning. We are also hoping to allow students to offer GLS opportunities later in the year.

INTERIM REPORT CARDS
Our first term interim-reporting week was this week from Monday October 24 to Friday October 28.
The expectation at Walnut Grove is that all teachers will be communicating to parents the current
progress of all their students at some point during the week. Teachers are no longer able to email
progress reports home due to FOIPPA issues. Therefore, all students should be receiving a physical
copy of their interim in class. Please be aware that the current progress of students is only based on
a few weeks of learning and classroom work. Therefore, the information teachers provide next
week is only a very small snapshot of a student’s learning. In many cases, teachers will not be
providing a letter grade as they will not have collected enough assessment to provide an accurate
letter grade. Also, please understand that the interim reporting period is an informal reporting
period; therefore, individual teachers will be communicating student progress to parents in a variety
of different ways. If you and/or your son/daughter have not received any progress reports from a
teacher, please contact the teacher directly or contact the appropriate Vice-Principal.
ME TO WE CLUB – WE SCARE HUNGER EVENT
Our school's ME To WE Club is holding the We Scare Hunger Event on October 31 from 5 PM to 8
PM. Students of WGSS will be going door-to-door around Walnut Grove to collect non-perishable
canned foods and cash donations. The non-perishable canned foods will be donated to the Langley
Food Bank and the money raised will go into providing clean water for families living in Third
World Countries. Although students will be going door-to-door around Walnut Grove, not all houses
will be covered; therefore, WGSS families are always welcome to drop off their canned food items
at the WGSS cafeteria between 6 PM and 8 PM on Halloween night. Thanks in advance to all our
WGSS families for supporting this initiative.
WGSS' GRAB AND GO BREAKFAST PROGRAM
Students, is there no time in the morning for a nutritious breakfast? We don’t want you to start your
school day on an empty stomach! We encourage any students, especially those who skipped
breakfast, to come by the cafeteria where Chef’s Frankson and Biggs will have available for you a
variety of items; home-made muffins, yogurt, fresh fruit, etc. every morning from 7:50 AM – 8:20
AM. Thanks to the generous support from the Walnut Grove Business Association and the Langley
School District Foundation, there is no charge to any student. See you in the morning where you
can Grab and Go!
Since our breakfast program started on October 12, we have been providing free breakfast for about
125 students per day. In order to sustain this volume for the entire year, the WGSS Breakfast
Program is looking for more donations of either food or cash to keep the program going strong all
year long. If you are able to assist, please contact Julia Bryant-Taneda at the school.
WEEKEND FUEL BAG PROGRAM
Did you know that three local Langley students, including one WGSS student, have been providing
weekend fuel bags filled with food and other weekend necessities for students in need? Well, its
true! On the last day of each week, any students in need of food and supplies for the weekend are
able to stop by the WGSS Youth Care Worker Room and pick up a bag of goodies for the weekend.
The students organizing this have worked very hard to gather supplies and food donations to make
this program a success, but they need your help! If you have any connections to the food industry or
are willing to donate to the program, please contact Mr. Trattle at the school to find out how you can
help out. To read more about the fabulous work these students are doing and their current needs,
please check out the recent article from the Langley Advance that can be found at the link below:
GRADE 9 TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK – NOVEMBER 2
Take Our Kids to Work Day is an exciting opportunity where grade 9 students experience a day in
the world of work. This day is an opportunity for students to understand the skills required in the
working world, to start exploring career options that are open to them, as well as to start thinking
about careers they may aspire to. It also allows for parents to have a shared experience with their
child, and hopefully Take Our Kids to Work Day will spark important conversations about plans
between parents and children! Completed forms were due back in the office on October 26. If you

25 YEAR THANK YOU
Mr. Kitteringham and the rest of Gator Nation would like to acknowledge and recognize the
following students who went above and beyond to help make last month's Ultimate Reunion and
Open House (25th Anniversary) a success.
Russell Epp, Grade 12 student, who spent countless hours creating a beautiful, colorful, and
comprehensive walking tour guide.
Asia Clarke, Grade 12 student, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to secure sponsors, promote
the event, and picked up and delivered 700 hundred hotdogs from Buy Low Foods

played in the cafeteria on the day of the event. The video was very well received and was much
appreciated.
We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous work of our school's Humanitarian Club which
organized the very popular "Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae" station, the Pride Club that
beautified the school for the event with balloons and other wonderful decorations, Claire Virtue and
Alicia Pol who did an amazing job at the face painting station, and finally our Gator Aid students
who pushed out an all-time WGSS record with over 700 hundred hotdogs!

MUSICAL NOTES
Congratulations to Joseph Chang, grade 12 for representing WGSS and Langley District in the
Provincial Honour Concert Band this past weekend. The 50 piece Honour Band is one of five
student ensembles that performed at the BC Music Educators’ Conference this past weekend. He
was the only Langley student selected!
On Monday evening, the WGSS Concert and Chamber Choir were part of a wonderful evening of
music at RE Mountain. Under the direction of Mr. Mike Angell, our choirs participated in the
Langley School District Choir Festival along with choirs from 5 other Langley High Schools. Both
choirs performed exceptionally, with the Concert Choir singing The Cuckoo and the Chamber Choir
singing a beautiful piece called Northern Light. The highlight of the evening was when all 6 choirs
from all the schools joined together at the end of the evening and performed two stunning pieces of
music. Under the direction of Dr. Geoffrey Boers, the Director of Choral Activities at the
University of Washington, the Langley District Massed Choir of over 400 students sang Seal
Lullaby and finished with Take Me to the Water. In the lead up to the festival, Dr. Boers worked
with each of the school's choirs in separate clinics in preparation for the evening's performance. It
was a fabulous celebration of music for our students and the District. Special thanks to all our
WGSS parents who came out to watch this great event!
