Welcome From Coventry – A City of Rugby 

“ 

As part of Coventry’s ten year 

sports strategy, Coventry – A City 

of Rugby” is an initiative to promote 

rugby and its core values, with the 

objective of making Coventry one of the 

leading cities in the world for every level of 

the sport by 2023 (rugby’s 200th anniversary). 

Unique to Coventry, it is a formal collaboration between all 

organisations in the city that have an interest in the game. These 

organisations are working together in partnership, to form a coherent 

framework for the development of rugby at all levels. 

Combining both Rugby Union and Rugby League – which is pioneering 

for Coventry and across the UK, the initiative aims to join up, promote 

and celebrate the whole continuum of Rugby from playing, coaching, 

volunteering or officiating, across schools, local clubs through to the 

elite level, with our three main professional clubs - Coventry Rugby, 

Wasps and Coventry Bears Rugby League. 

As one of the cities designated “key sports”, City of Rugby will work to 

increase participation in the game across all levels in the city – making 

it more accessible to women and girls, those with disabilities and those 

from non-traditional rugby playing backgrounds. Working closely with 

all key partners, Engage! has been commissioned by the City of Rugby 

Steering Group to co-ordinate the initiative, acting as the independent 

guardian of the strategy in partnership with the Rugby Football Union 

(RFU) and Rugby Football League (RFL). 

As a City of Rugby, Coventry aims to: 

1. Inspire more people regularly to take part in rugby or adapted 

formats of the game. 

2. Implement coherent and coordinated structures for participation, 

coaching and development. 

3. Increase the number of qualified and experienced club and 

community rugby coaches, volunteers and referees. 

4. Identify and support gifted and talented rugby players to reach 

their playing potential. 

5. Ensure that all of the city’s rugby facilities are modern, of high 

quality and accessible. 

6. Develop performance rugby and attract high profile rugby 

events to the city. 

7. Promote rugby in the city through effective rugby partnerships 

and communications. 

8. Make Coventry a better place to live, work, study and visit.

Welcome From Coventry Sports Network 

“ 

As chair of Coventry Sport 

Network (CSN), it has been great 

to see all the partners come together 

to develop the Coventry Sports Strategy 

and to witness the impact it is having 

throughout the city. 

The CSN has been working with key partners to develop key sports 

throughout the city, and the City of Rugby is a good example of 

an holistic approach to a sport. The “City of Rugby” initiative has 

seen huge growth over the last 6 months, allowing for both Rugby 

League and Union to work collaboratively to create a total rugby 

offer for Coventry. 

Working with the City council’s Director of Education and a number 

of the City’s schools, we are developing an education sports strategy 

that will help to increase our sporting offer to all young people. 

We aim to launch this strategy in 2017. 

On behalf of the CSN I would like to thank all the partners for their 

time and dedication to the initiative, and would encourage all 

schools to take up any offers or programmes that are available as 

part of the “City of Rugby” partnership.

Coventry Sports Strategy Achievements 

Coventry City Council has 

committed £36.7m to develop a 

unique sports and leisure facility 

in Coventry city centre 

During its first year, the new pool at 

Centre AT7 saw 156% increase in 

memberships and a 1000% increase 

in number of swimmers per week 

Over 5,000 people celebrated the 

Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour in 

August 2015 

There were 2,339,537 participant 

visits to public leisure sites, 

up 1% on the year before 

Since the development of tennis as 

a key sport, adult participation has 

increased by 28% and juniors 27% 

Coventry Sports Network and 

its partners have managed to 

secure over £1,420,978 in 

external grant funding

The Engage! Values Programme 

Engage! Coventry is an educational programme designed to 

use the core values of rugby to provide social and educational 

benefits as a way of developing healthy, well-rounded, 

confident young people, who have greater access to opportunities 

and a real sense of belonging within their local communities. 

Engage! also aims to bring rugby coaching to every child in the city 

and works with a range of partner organisations across Coventry, 

including the Rugby Football Union (RFU), Rugby Football League (RFL), 

Wasps, Coventry Rugby and Coventry Bears. 

Engage! has been developed and is hosted by Coventry Sports 

Foundation, funded through the financial support of the Millerchip 

Family Fund and supports the national Ofsted requirements around 

“Character Education”. 

Our Values 

Rugby’s unique ethos is built around five core values, which lie at the 

heart of the game and are embodied by all of its participants, both 

on and off the field of play. These values underpin all of the Engage! 

Coventry strategic objectives and activities. 

Participants receive high-quality rugby skills coaching but the core 

focus will be on delivering ‘value-based’ programmes that facilitate 

character development to enable social and educational benefit, 

whilst also improving the physical well-being of participants. 

Our Objectives - Engage! Coventry has five key objectives: 

1. To improve the educational and social development of school-age 

children, with a particular focus on those who are disengaged 

or excluded. 

2. To improve the physical well-being of children, young people and 

families, particularly those from communities with pronounced 

health inequalities. 

3. To help young people develop the necessary skills, confidence 

and social behaviours to pursue opportunities for further education, 

training and employment. 

4. To promote rugby and its core values to non-traditional rugby 

playing groups and to use the sport as a means of encouraging 

social inclusion. 

5. To develop and grow a cohesive ‘Coventry Rugby Community’ 

that promotes the game and its values as a means of connecting 

communities and cultures. 

The core values behind Rugby Union are proven to have a vast range 

of benefits and create positive impacts on a player’s life. The Engage! 

programme and the “City of Rugby” initiative, is working to highlight these 

values, to develop young people in all communities across Coventry. 

We also aim to promote the sport and increase participation in rugby 

league and union – aiming work in schools to engage every child in 

Coventry with the game and building a better city through embedding 

the values as part of people’s everyday lives.

Rugby is a sport built around

success, both on the field of play

Discipline is central to rugby, as 

is evidenced by the fact that the 

rules of the game are still referred 

to as laws. Rugby teaches the 

importance of adhering to rules, 

an attribute that all participants are 

expected to demonstrate both on 

and off the field. 

ENJOYMENT 

Rugby is a fast and exciting sport 

that generates great passion 

amongst its participants. It is also 

very sociable and provides an 

opportunity to make enriching 

friendships with people from diverse 

backgrounds and communities. 

RESPECT 

Respect is of the utmost 

importance to rugby, as players 

are taught to show respect for 

their teammates, the opposition, 

their coaches, the match officials 

and themselves. They must work 

to earn and retain the respect of 

the rugby community by setting 

good examples both on and off 

the pitch. 

TEAMWORK 

Rugby brings together a group 

of individuals and moulds them 

into a single unit, where they learn 

to support and encourage one 

another in pursuit of a common 

goal. This team spirit cuts across 

cultural, geographic and religious 

differences and often leads to the 

creation of lifelong friendships.

Be An England Four Nations Mascot 

Youngsters from Coventry and Warwickshire are being offered a 

once-in-a-lifetime chance to rub shoulders with England rugby 

league players in front of thousands of people. 

School children from teams and classes across the local area are 

being urged to fill the mascot roles for the England side. The 15 lucky 

winners will be able to meet the England team, stand with them in the 

tunnel and then accompany the players out on to the pitch. 

To have the chance to win, groups need to make a booking as a team 

or class of 15 children – the group will then be entered into a prize draw 

which will be drawn by and England player. 

To have the chance to win, the group booking must be made 

through the RFL Group Sales team via groups@rfl.co.uk or by 

calling 0844 8561 115.

RFU CBRE All Schools Programme 

Creating a positive legacy for one million children through 

rugby and its core values. 

Rugby union is a game for All Schools – everyone can play it and 

every school can teach it! CBRE All Schools has been developed 

by the RFU to increase the amount of rugby in schools, and to 

encourage new players to join local clubs. 

CBRE All Schools aims to increase the number of schools playing 

rugby union by taking the game into 750 state secondary schools, 

with the aim of making school life happier and healthier, reducing 

anti-social behaviour, enhancing learning and increasing selfesteem 

for students. 

Investing in the next generation 

CBRE All Schools is one of the RFU’s major development 

programmes from the 2015 Rugby World Cup; it presents a oncein-a-generation 

opportunity to deliver the greatest participatory 

legacy for the game.

Coventry Schools Rugby Union 

About Us 

Coventry Schools Rugby Union (CSRU) has been in existence since 

1896 and is a fully constituted charity with a full list of officers who 

are elected on an annual basis. 

Our History 

More than 150 boys from the city’s schools have represented England 

at U16 or U18 level, and more than thirty have gone on to gain a 

full cap, most for England but many for other countries too. Current 

internationals that played for Coventry Schools include England’s Tom 

Wood, Scotland’s Jim Hamilton, America’s Ronnie McClean, and 

Jeff Gregson for the Philippines. 

What Do We Do? 

Our constitutional aim is “to provide rugby football for the boys of 

Coventry”. We do that in two ways: 

Who Can Play For Coventry Schools? 

Boys who attend a school in Coventry, who are in Year 9 to 11, 

and who are of the required standard and who have the support 

and authorisation of the school. 

Warwickshire Schools Rugby Union 

By affiliating to CSRU, schools are automatically members of 

Warwickshire Schools and England Schools RFU. After boys have 

played for Coventry, they can progress to training and playing for 

Warwickshire schools’ sides, through a selection process.

All schools in Coventry’s Local Authority area, state or independent, 

secondary and primary are able to be a member. By affiliating staff 

and students all automatically become members of CSRU.

Women And Girls - Playing Opportunities 

Whether its rugby league, rugby union, tag, touch or full contact, 

there are numerous opportunities for Women and Girls to try rugby 

and take part in all formats of the game. 

As part of its work to grow rugby union in England, the RFU has launched 

a strategy to take the game to 100,000 women and girls across the 

country. Coventry Bears and the Rugby Football League (RFL) also have 

programmes available, with mixed or women only Bears 5’s sessions. 

Women can also join Coventry Welsh if they are looking to be part of a 

local club in Coventry. 

Additionally, the City of Rugby is proud to support the national This Girl 

Can programme with CSW Sport. This Girl Can is a national campaign 

developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership 

organisations to inspire more women and girls to become active, and 

conquer fear of judgement as the primary barrier. For more information

Under 12 girls’ participation 

Girls aged Under 12 can participate in mixed mini rugby, played within the 

RFU Continuum. 

Girls’ age bands, U13, U15 & U18 

The U13 girls’ age band is permitted to include U11s, U12s and U13s girls. 

The U15 girls’ age band includes U14s and U15s and the U18 girls’ age 

band is for U16s, U17s and U18s. Barker Butts offer teams at U13 and U15. 

Senior women 

There are round 250 female senior and university teams affiliated to 

the RFU, with more than 7,000 women playing regularly. For information

Red Roses Lead The Way For Women’s Rugby in England 

The RFU has laid out its intent for the women’s game over the 

next four years, with the Red Roses unveiled as the new identity 

for England Women, to inspire more people to get involved 

whether playing or supporting the women’s game. 

Today 26,000 women and girls regularly play contact rugby, 

11,000 more than when England Women lifted the Rugby World 

Cup in 2014. 

With over 300 rugby clubs across the country now hosting 

women and girls’ teams, there are numerous opportunities for 

women and girls across England to participate in rugby whether 

that be sevens, 15s or O2 Touch. 

As they enter their World Cup defence campaign, England 

Women now have 48 professional player contracts, including for 

the first time ever in the 15-a-side game. 

As the Red Roses set out on the road to the World Cup in Ireland 

next year, the RFU has outlined its ambition to improve the player 

pathway for the development of the international game.

O2 Touch is a leading participation programme that is 

introducing new players to try a minimal contact, inclusive 

version of the game and inspiring former players to return 

to a sport they love. 

Whether it’s about rediscovering sport or honing your fitness, 

O2 Touch is a fun and friendly environment for both men and 

women of all abilities to get involved in touch rugby. With 

an emphasis on social fitness, music and pitch up and play 

activity, O2 Touch breaks down barriers to participation 

and is strengthening our member clubs by growing playing 

opportunities in local communities. 

Anyone can join in with an O2 Touch session at any one of 

Coventry’s four O2 Touch centre’s across the City and with the 

Coventry Bears, Bears 5’s programme, you can now play touch 

rugby every night of the working week in Coventry! 

The game emphasizes running, agility and ball handling skills 

such as passing and catching. Looking something similar to 

Rugby, without the tackling, scrumming and kicking.

Driving Rugby Forward - Be A Young Rugby Ambassador 

Being part of the Young Rugby Ambassador (YRA) programme gives 

you the opportunity to gain recognition for your involvement in 

supporting rugby and there are countless ways to get involved! 

Who can be a YRA? 

Anybody aged 14-25 who wants to support rugby in their local area. 

This can be at your club, school, college, university or within your 

community; where ever you feel you can contribute. You can be 

a group of mates or just on your own supported by your club, tutor, 

teacher or committee. It could be refereeing a match once a week 

or helping out at an event once a year. There’s a huge variety of ways 

to support rugby in your area, from managing a club’s social media to 

coaching mini’s and juniors. 

How it works? 

The YRA programme is in partnership with VInspired, who provide the 

tool to set yourself a goal for the number of hours you want to complete 

and will help you keep track of what you have achieved. The more 

hours you give, the more given back to you. The milestones you will 

receive reward are; 10,30,50 and 100 hours. You will receive certificates 

and exclusive YRA merchandise.
