It’s Turkey Month!!! 

As we comfortably settle into our South Florida Fall, we 

prepare for cooler temperatures, look forward to wearing 

sleeves and boots, and hosting our visiting relatives. It’s no 

secret that Thanksgiving is THE busiest traveled holiday of the year. 

Delray Beach is chock full of outdoorsy things to do with 

friends and family - many wonderful activities to help burn off 

the overindulgence of Turkey Day. According to research from the 

Calorie Control Council, the average American may consume more 

than 4,500 calories and a whopping 229 grams of fat during a traditional 

Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the trimmings!

to projects that exhibit best practices in 

Florida redevelopment over the past year. 

This year, the Delray Beach CRA and 

the City of Delray Beach were honored 

for the US-1/Federal Highway Beautification 

Project. The former Delray US-1/Federal 

Highway corridors, in stark contrast 

with other downtown streets, had narrow 

sidewalks and minimal landscaping, 

which promoted high speeds, leading to 

triple the statewide crash rate within the 

main commercial core. Through the US-1/ 

Federal Highway Beautification Project, 

the Delray CRA was able to reconfigure 

the existing roadway to reduce one travel 

lane in each direction to accommodate 

on-street parking, a bike lane, and wider 

landscaped sidewalks.

Mark Sauer knew he’d found two outstanding 

volunteers for his non-profit 

organization when he met Les Kraft and 

Caron Chalstrom. 

Sauer, founder and chairman of the 

board of Delray Students First, didn’t know 

what to expect last year when he went to 

the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce’s 

Volunteer Delray event, hosted by the organization’s 

Non-Profit Council. 

What he discovered were more than 50 

other organizations providing information 

about volunteer opportunities, along 

with dozens of visitors from throughout 

the community looking for places where

they could volunteer their time. 

He also found Kraft and Chalstrom, volunteers 

who fit perfectly with Delray Students 

First, an organization that provides 

college-placement tutoring for lower income 

students. 

“That was our first year at Volunteer 

Delray and we found two really special 

and important volunteers who bring a lot 

to the table,” Sauer said. 

So it comes as no surprise that Sauer 

will be back when the Non-Profit Council 

hold its Fifth Annual Volunteer Delray 

event on Friday, Nov. 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 

p.m. at Old School Square. 

This year’s Volunteer Delray will feature 

a variety of non-profit programs serving a 

broad array of needs. Set up on the west 

lawn at Old School Square, the event takes 

place prior to the Free Friday Night Concert 

featuring Big City Dogs, which begins 

at 7:30. Both events are free and open to 

the public.

love, love the rally, but it’s that match point with a good 

grunt that brings it home - especially when the crowd 

has a loud, unanimous exclamation. Watching (or playing) 

sports as a family is always a great pastime, and definitely 

where some great family stories are created. Tennis 

is one of the best of those sports, and thankfully we have 

the Chris Evert Raymond James Pro Celebrity Tennis Classic 

where we can make fun new memories and help other 

families make some, too. Since 1989, Chris Evert has spearheaded 

an ongoing campaign against drug abuse and child 

neglect in Florida and continues to raise money to fund 

programs that ensure a bright future for at-risk children 

and their families. On top of that, you get to watch celebrities 

who have a jovial disposition and microphones battle 

it out on the courts, including Timothy Olyphant, Martina 

Navratilova, Randy Jackson, Carson Kressley and more. The 

Classic is held November 18 through 20 and tickets start 

at only $20 for general admission per day so get ready to

Coastal Clean Up Event in 

Delray Beach 

The Institute for Regional Conservation 

(IRC) recently held a Beach Restoration/ 

International Coastal Clean Up Event at 

the public beach across from the Marriott 

Hotel in Delray Beach. This volunteer day 

was part of the Green Grant awarded to 

Hari Chittaluru, George Gann, Skyler 

Chittaluru, Diana Hileman 

IRC by Waste Management through Keep 

Palm Beach County Beautiful. The event 

focused on restoring biodiversity within 

this beautiful dune system by planting 

native dune species and cleaning the area 

by removing trash and recyclables. 

IRC’s Chief Conservation Strategist 

George Gann and IRC’s Education 

and Outreach Coordinator Cara Abbott 

worked with nearly 50 volunteers from 

Community Greening, CB&I, Delray Students 

First, Cub Scout Pack 315, Hileman 

Law, P.A., and the Delray Beach Chamber 

of Commerce to make the restoration day 

a huge success. Plants added to the dune 

system include sea oats, indigo berry, saw 

palmettos and silver palms. Volunteers 

also collected over 75 pounds of trash and 

54 pounds of recyclables off of the beach.

4. The somewhat strange actor Benedict 

Cumberbach plays the title character of 

“Dr. Strange.” Cumberbach is an exalted 

neurosurgeon who loses the use of his 

hands after a car accident. After a period 

as a wandering derelict, he encounters 

a mystic healer in the Himalayas who 

teaches him to tap into psychic power to 

battle evil. Rachel McAdam, Tilda Swinton, 

Chiwetal Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelson 

co-star under the direction of Scott 

Derrickson (“Deliver Us From Evil”). 

Mel Gibson is back in the director’s 

chair for “Hacksaw Ridge.” This is the 

true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew 

Garfield), an army medic and conscientious 

objector who saved 75 men in 

Okinawa while getting badly injured 

himself. Doss was the first conscientious 

objector (he never carried a gun) to receive 

the Congressional Medal of Honor.

“Trolls;” they are everywhere. This is 

a computer-animated feature based on 

the popular Danish toys. Anna Kendrick 

voices Princess Poppy, the happiest troll

Gwen Stefani and Russell Brand.

At least it is not a sequel, but the plot 

sounds familiar. In “Arrival” space ships 

land around the globe up to no good. Expert 

linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) 

leads a team bent on saving the human 

race from aliens. Based on a short story 

by Ted Chiang, the cast includes Jeremy 

Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stulbarg, 

Mark O’Brien and Tzi Ma. Denis Villeneuve 

(“Sicario”) directs. 

“Almost Christmas” also seems naggingly 

familiar. David E. Talbert (“First 

Sunday”) wrote and directed this story 

of a dysfunctional family attempting to 

fulfill the wish of their departed patriarch 

to live in peace and harmony for 

five days. Gabrielle Union, Danny Glover, 

Nicole Ari Park, Omar Epps, Romany 

Malco, Kimberly Elise and Mo’Nique are 

featured players. 

It’s always a pleasure to see Naomi 

Watts on the silver screen, especially as 

a damsel-in-distress. In “Shut In” she is a 

widowed child psychologist living alone 

in rural New England, trapped by 

a wicked winter storm, trying to 

save the life of a young boy (Jason 

Tremblay). Farren Blackburn 

(“Hammer of the Gods”) directs a 

cast that includes Tim Post, David 

Cubit, Charlie Heaton and Oliver 

Platt. 

“Loving” is a double entendre title 

about an interracial couple, Richard 

and Mildred Loving (Joel 

Edgerton and Ruth Negga) who 

were jailed in Virginia in 1958 

as a mixed-race couple. They 

fought all the way to the Supreme 

Court, and got Virginia’s miscegenation 

laws struck down. Jeff Nichols 

(“Mud”) directs and Michael Shannon, 

Nick Kroll and Bill Camp are featured.

If you liked those Harry Potter movies, 

you may like “The Fantastic Beasts 

and Where to Find Them,” which is an 

earlier book by J.K. Rowling, set in 1926. 

Ms. Rowling herself adapted her book as 

a screenplay, and David Yates, who directed 

the last four Harry Potter films, is 

director. Eddie Redmayne is world traveler 

Newt Scamander, along with Katherine

Is “Edge of Seventeen” inspired by a 

song by Stevie Nicks? It sure sounds like 

writer/director Kelly Fremon took that

with her best friend. Kyra Sedgwick plays 

her clueless mom. Woody Harrelson is

“Allied” brought Brad Pitt and Marion 

Cottillard together with unexpected results. 

Pitt is an intelligence officer behind

Most people dismiss the idea of traveling to Europe in winter, but 

it’s actually a great time to see this region in a different light. As the 

temperatures drop so do the crowds and prices making it the perfect time 

to visit local attractions at a relaxed pace. The weather might be colder in 

the low season, but you can usually find hearty food in restaurants run by 

warm and welcoming locals. Europe offers something to suit everyone; 

nature lovers, culture vultures and adrenaline junkies will all feel at home. 

Here are ten reasons why you should seriously consider a winter trip. 

Take advantAGe of lower prices 

1 for flights, hotels and shops 

Flights can be half the price in the winter 

season, and it’s a similar story on the ground 

with discounts available at hostels and hotels. 

Some of the best deals can be found online 

where high-end hotels in smaller cities 

often offer special promotional packages. 

The only time this doesn’t apply is around 

the holidays and New Year when you’ll need 

to plan in advance, but are still likely to pay

Spinal Stenosis 

Effective Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Spinal Stenosis is a debilitating orthopedic and neurological disorder which 

affects primarily the geriatric population. It is characterized by lower back 

pain that can radiate into the legs and produce subsequent weakness. 

Often times the weakness is associated 

with painful numbness and tingling. A 

common presentation is a drastic increase 

in pain when the individual is standing 

idle, as occurs when cooking or doing the 

dishes, or with prolonged walking and almost 

immediate relief when progressing to 

a sitting position. 

Spinal stenosis seems to be greatly misunderstood 

in the general population. It literally 

means a narrowing of the spinal canal, 

the bony structure which houses and protects 

the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. 

The occlusion of the spinal canal is typically 

caused by one of four distinct entities; congenitally 

narrowed canal from birth, tumor, 

disc herniation, and or arthritis. By far the 

leading cause is arthritis in which bone 

spurs and changes in the morphology or 

shape of the vertebra lead to occlusion. 

Unfortunately, the primary recommendation 

for such a presentation as spinal 

stenosis is surgical intervention. However, 

non-surgical conservative treatment options 

have vastly improved over the years and 

should be a serious initial consideration before 

any invasive procedures. In-fact some 

of the most decorated orthopedic and neurosurgeons 

in the world are now having their 

patients attempt conservative therapies 

prior to surgery. 

Revolutionary new treatment options 

are centered on decompressing the spine 

utilizing advanced stretching mechanisms, 

applying flexion based trunk exercises, manipulating 

the lumbar spine, and applying 

class IV cold laser therapy. Due to the fact 

that arthritis cannot be removed by any 

means, the main objectives of these therapies 

are to reposition the spinal joints and 

stretch the lumbar ligaments and tendons 

so that the canal is physically widened. The 

amount of widening necessary to produce 

positive long-lasting change is very minimal 

and quite attainable. In conjunction with 

this, cold laser therapy decreases the healing 

time by increasing the metabolism of 

the injured cells and by reducing inflammation 

and spasm. Therapeutic exercises are 

applied to increase strength in the correct 

muscle groups so as to reinforce the widening 

of the canal. Give non-traditional yet effective 

treatment options a chance prior to 

any surgical intervention.

For many people, the worst part of aging is not how they feel, but the 

impact of what they see in the mirror. Aging skin is telltale. If there 

were a way to prevent or reverse the lines, dark spots, blood vessels 

and wrinkles, growing old would be much more palatable. 

The good news is that over the last few years 

there have been huge breakthroughs in combating 

the once inevitable dismal reflection. 

There are more than 100 different theories 

about why skin ages. The most prevalent and 

scientifically proven is the theory of oxidation, 

which suggests that oxygen by-products 

known as reactive oxygen species, or free 

radicals are responsible for the damaged 

look to our outer organ. Superoxide radicals 

are responsible for destroying collagen and 

elastin which leads to sagging skin, lines and 

wrinkles. The oxidants (free radicals) may 

cause pigment spots, or even worse, cause 

deep cellular damage to DNA leading to skin 

cancers. Additionally, UV rays (sunlight) also 

accelerate the appearance of aged skin, fre- 


quently resulting in skin cancer. 

What can one do? First, where 

there are oxidants, hit them 

with anti-oxidants and neutralize 

the free radicals before 

they cause damage. This is 

called Age Deceleration. 

Using sun block prevents the 

creation of free radicals, but 

now there are powerful 

anti-oxidants that 

can clean up the 

mess that may 

have already set 

in. One of my

Tips for Helping Your Child 

Overcome Dental Anxiety

A positive first experience can lead to 

a lifetime of stress-free experiences. 

Taking your child to the dentist is necessary 

to keep their teeth healthy and promote 

excellent oral hygiene habits. While 

some children view it as a treat where they 

get special, positive attention from the 

dental team, a sparkly clean smile and a 

goody bag, other children have issues with 

visiting the dentist. From a child’s point of 

view, visiting the dentist is scary, complete 

with lying on a chair in an unfamiliar room, 

hearing and seeing unfamiliar noises and 

objects, and having a stranger poke around 

in their mouth with cold, metallic instruments. 

Plus, as your child’s teeth continue 

to fall out and grow in, he/she may take at 

least 10 trips to the dentist before starting 

kindergarten. To help ease future visits for 

your child and ensure a positive outlook 

overall, follow these steps so he/she feels 

more comfortable and relaxed. 

Start Early 

The American Dental Association recommends 

that children be seen on or around 

the time their first tooth comes in, which 

could be when they are six months or a 

year old. This is a great time to get your 

child used to the dentist and be familiar 

with the sights, smells and sounds of the 

dental office. The earlier a child visits the 

dentist, the better, and this will set him or 

her up for oral care success. 

Leave it to the Experts 

When talking to your child about the dentist, 

avoid telling them that pain will be involved 

or insinuate that it will hurt. Dentists 

who see children know how to best communicate 

with them as to what they can expect 

on an age-appropriate level. All you need to 

tell your child is that his/her dental team 

will be nice and gentle, and is here to help! 


Relax! 

Children often pick up on your mood and 

will be able to sense your tension. If you 

are worried or anxious about taking them 

to the dentist, they will more than likely 

become worried and anxious themselves. 

Instead, remain calm and know that your 

child will be seen by professionals who are 

experts at communicating with children 

and taking care of their dental health. 

Be Understanding 

It’s normal for children to experience 

anxiety when they’re placed in an unfamiliar 

environment, so it’s helpful to let 

them know that it’s alright to feel anxious 

and scared. You can talk with them about 

why they are afraid, and let them know the 

dental team has their best interest in mind 

and will only do the required and necessary 

work in a safe environment. The more 

understanding you are about your child’s 

dental anxiety, the less anxious they’ll feel. 

Choose the Right Dentist 

It’s important to not only choose a dentist 

who is experienced in treating children, 

but a dentist that offers a welcoming, clean 

environment. Many dentists offer special 

sunglasses, overhead screens for cartoons 

or movies, massage chairs and toys that 

help children feel more at home and relaxed 

during their visit. You can even encourage 

your child to ask questions about 

the treatment or procedure he/she is receiving 

because it gives the dental provider 

a chance to “tell, show, do,” allowing the 

child to feel more in control and aware of 

what’s going on. 

Overall, it’s normal for a child to feel anxious 

about visiting the dentist. But, by following 

these tips, you can help your child 

overcome dental anxiety so he/she will actually 

start to look forward to visiting the 

dentist. It’s a proud moment when your 

child can say he/she is cavity free, and this 

will come as a result of a great doctor-patient 

relationship built on trust, open communication 

and respect. Remember, the 

earlier your child sees the dentist, the better, 

and always let your dentist explain the 

procedures directly to your child. Reassure 

your child – and yourself – that he/she is in 

good hands and the goal is a happy, healthy 

smile he/she can keep for a lifetime!

Lose Weight?

Skip breakfast and lose weight you said!? Yes, you read correctly. I know… 

for those that are not familiar with Intermittent Fasting (IF) it may sound 

like crazy talk, especially because we have been so engrained to “Never skip 

{breakfast,” “Start your day off right” etc, etc. 

When I started to learn about this concept, 

I had a hard time believing this way of 

eating could be so beneficial. But after doing 

lots of research and trying this concept 

for a couple of years now, I’m here to share 

how this pattern of eating can make your 

fitness goals just a tad bit easier and who 

wouldn’t want that! 

So what type of “diet” is this, you ask? 

Well, it’s not a diet it’s actually a pattern. 

Intermittent fasting is a term for an eating 

pattern that cycles between periods of fasting 

and eating. It does not give you particular 

foods you should eat, but rather when you 

should eat. This actually allows you to enjoy 

more of the food you love! And don’t let the 

term “fasting” scare you. Fasting actually allows 

the body to function more efficiently 

and literally helps turn your body into a fat 

burning machine. Trust me, I’m living proof 

- getting back into shape after my 3rd baby. 

In addition, by adapting to this type of eating 

pattern life just seems a little simpler. I’m not 

worried about breakfast when I’m trying to 

get 3 kids and myself out of the house. A feat 

any busy mom could understand. 

What does skipping breakfast have to do 

with all of this? Skipping breakfast extends 

the amount of time that you are in the fasted 

state. While you are sleeping your body is in 

a fasted stated. That’s why breakfast is called 

what it is. Hence the word breakfast. Skipping 

breakfast extends the time your body is 

in a fat burning mode. Experts recommend 

you fast for at least 16 hours from your last 

meal. If you ate dinner at 7pm your next 

meal would be at 11am the following day. By 

letting your body “fast” and giving it a break 

from being fed constantly amazing things 


start to happen. In the fasted state, insulin is 

low and your body is prime for burning fat. 

Your body burns fat not food. On the contrary 

when your body is in the “fed” stated… 

full of food, your insulin becomes elevated 

and signals your body to store excess fat cells 

in the body. While insulin is present fat burning 

stops and your body is only focused on 

burning the food you just ate…not fat! Eek! 

If you’re still skeptical about skipping 

breakfast, I urge you to do some of your own 

research on the many benefits of IF. (I didn’t 

mention how IF helps fight cancer cells) 

And if you never liked breakfast, then rest 

assured you aren’t missing out on much! I 

should add that there are several different 

methods/ways to incorporate IF into your 

lifestyle. This is not a one size fits all type of 

plan and there are many different methods

Changing Faces Makeup owner Rhonda Vacanti, says her 

permanent makeup establishment in Delray Beach does 

even more than change faces for many of her clients.

breast cancer survivor – Barbara Bregoli 

agrees. “It’s been great. Rhonda helped me 

so much, she said. “I can go outside and not 

look as sick as I feel. She gave me a face I can’t 

possibly do for myself. With the medications 

I take I feel very pale. I don’t wear makeup.” 

Vacanti adds: “I’ve worked with people with 

cancer and scars from some type of accident. 

Permanent makeup brings back their confidence. 

I work on people with macular degeneration, 

glaucoma, and many other eye diseases.” 

Changing Faces Makeup specializes in a 

wide variety of services. Vacanti, an award 

winning artist, who has received extensive, 

specialized training in all permanent makeup 

procedures, said eyebrows, eyeliners and lip 

liner and tinting are her most popular procedures. 

Permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique 

employing tattoos as a means of producing 

designs that resemble makeup. 

Vacanti said her many clients range in age 

from 25 to 90. “They’re all over the page,” she 

said. “Different beauty magazines have made 

eyebrows very trendy and hot.” 

She said another big trend is a technique 

called microblading. “A lot of people are coming 

in asking for it,” she said, but she cautions 

some people are falsely advertising this particular 

eyebrow procedure as semi-permanent. 

“Any way you do eyebrows is all the 

same thing. The public is being misled. It still 

requires a license by the Palm Beach County 

Health Department. I’d like to emphasize any 

type of tattooing must be done in a licensed 

establishment. People need to realize there’s 

permanent eyeliner immediately after

needles involved needing special handling.” 

Permanent makeup can last from one to 

five years. “It just fades,” she said. “It needs a 

color boost. It’s not really gone.” 

Vacanti said an active lifestyle does not affect 

permanent makeup. “All my clients are 

athletic. They play tennis and other sports,” 

she said. “It doesn’t wear out.” 

Many in the medical community send their 

patients to Vacanti. “The ideal client is someone 

allergic to conventional makeup,” she said, 

adding skin doctors and opthalmologists regularly 

refer them to her. 

Vacanti emphasizes the difference between 

her business and a traditional tattoo parlor. 

“The atmosphere that I offer is a medical spa 

environment with relaxing music and relaxing 

aromatherapy,” she said. “ I use the highest 

quality numbing and the highest quality 

equipment to minimize discomfort. We give 

a totally different experience. Eyeliners, eyebrows 

and lips are pre-numbed.” 

Bregoli concurs: “She tells me step-by-step 

what she’s going do,” she said, adding, “Rhonda 

is very conservative (in her approach) to 

the point you want her to do more.” 

Permanent makeup is applied in a variety 

of different colors and tones. “It all depends on

skin tone. All of my colors are custom blended 

for each client,” Vacanti said. “Eyeliner is almost 

always black.” 

Permanent makeup doesn’t last quite as 

long as a traditional tattoo, Vacanti said. “It’s 

not exactly the same products as a traditional 

technique,” she said. “I use the latest technology 

and the highest quality of everything.” 

In order to apply permanent makeup, one 

must be licensed by the state. 

Does she ever have any male clientele? 

“Yes, I have one coming in tomorrow for eyebrows,” 

she said. 

Another hot trend in skincare is called 

dermaplaning. “It’s an anti-aging skin treatment,” 

Vacanti said. “It’s one of the hottest 

trends and it’s done with a scalpel. It removes 

dead skin from the surface. It gives you a nice 

healthy glow.” 

Vacanti, a former optician, started Changing 

Faces Makeup in 1997. “I am the owner and 

artist,” she said. She is board certified with the 

American Academy of Micropigmentation, and 

the founder of an organization called “Techs 

Helping Techs,” a professional group that gives 

scholarships to artists from all around the 

world. “I got my skin care license and permanent 

makeup certification in 1997,” she said. “I 

opened a day spa in 2000, and sold it in 2004. I 

wanted to be more boutique and private.” 

“I pride myself on the cleanliness of my 

office,” she said, “and the highest quality 

pigments, needles and numbing products. 

I am certified five times in microneedling, 

four times in dermaplaning, and I have performed 

over 18,000 procedures in permanent 

makeup.”

capability and top notch luxury is the S

Fathom Impact Cruise 

Offers a Unique Travel Adventure

It didn’t take long to realize that this cruise 

to the Dominican Republic was going to be 

unlike any cruise we had ever taken. 

Even then, we had little idea that this sevenday 

adventure would truly be a life-changing 

experience – one none of us would ever forget. 

It began in July when a small group of us 

from the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce 

had the opportunity to bring a spouse or a guest 

with us on what was branded as an “impact” 

cruise aboard the Adonia, a 705-passenger 

Fathom cruise line ship that recently arrived 

from Europe. 

We’d been told we’d be taking part in “voluntourism” 

– essentially a cruise with a cause 

where we could do community service in the 

Dominican community of Puerto Plata while 

getting a little R & R. You could think of it as a 

non-secular mission trip working side-by-side 

with 500 or so people we’d never met. 

While most cruises are about what you get 

to see, the Fathom Impact Cruise is all about 

what you do – which is help others. We taught 

conversational English to people in their homes,

planted trees in a forest, created transformative 

in-home water filters and helped to build concrete 

floors for families living in poor neighborhoods. 

We made recycled paper or chocolate 

bars that generate income for local residents 

or went to schools where we danced, sang and 

played basketball with area children. 

“We expected the Fathom cruise to be similar 

to others we had taken but with added impact 

activities,” said Sarah Crane, chair of the chamber’s 

Nonprofit Council who traveled with her 

boyfriend Eric Camacho. “But in so many ways 

Fathom was different.” 

The Adonia doesn’t have a casino nor does it 

have the shows, dining plans and never-ending 

activities you’ll find on a bigger ship. Unlike 

most cruises it only stops in one port, becoming 

a floating hotel for three days. But none of that 

mattered. Instead, it was the magnitude of the 

impact that this “impact cruise” had on all of us 

that was most remarkable. 

For the Chamber’s Member Development 

Director, Lynn Van Lenten, and her husband, 

Glenn, one of the highlights of the cruise was 

a morning spent helping to put down concrete 

floors in a small home shared by a family of four. 

“It wasn’t just an opportunity to look into 

the homes or into the neighborhood,” she said. 

“It was a chance to meet the families, hug the 

children, laugh with the babies and rejoice with 

other volunteers. Walking back on to the Adonia, 

all sweaty and dirty, was the best feeling. A 

family was changed forever. A dream had come 

true through our efforts.” 

For Chamber Board Member Noreen Payne, 

who went on the Fathom cruise a few weeks before 

the rest of us, the trip became a shared adventure 

where she and her 17-year-old daughter 

Alia were able to work together. 

“I saw my usually shy daughter blossom,” 

Noreen said. “She not only jumped in to help 

Alia Payne dances while helping 

to put down concrete floors 

but she really engaged with the local residents, 

going so far as to dance with them.” 

Impact travel is something relatively new 

to the cruise industry and something that may 

take a while to catch on. But it is, according to 

Jeff Dash of Dash Travel in Delray Beach, a different 

kind of trip for people who want to something 

different and rewarding on their cruise. 

“It gives people the chance to go on vacation 

and at the same time give back in many ways,” 

said Dash, who helped arrange the chamber 

trip. “You’re going with like-minded people who 

want to share the experience and you’re changing 

the way some people in the Dominican Republic 

exist.” 

While the cruise is focused on working in the 

community, there are also many opportunities 

to enjoy the tourist town and pool and zip line 

at Amber Cove, a port built by Fathom’s parent 

company, Carnival Cruise Line. Fathom offers 

several excursions, including visits to waterfalls 

and beaches, and passengers are welcome to 

visit attractions – such as a mountain-top state 

park accessible by cable car. 

While we each had different experiences, all

Balestriere has witnessed the transformation 

of a once sleeping downtown Delray

Owner Michael Crane and his wife echoes

Getting Delray in Step, the ‘Old Fashioned’ Way

In an age of mega department stores, super-sized hardware store 

chains, and a Starbucks on every corner, a touch of yesteryear still 

exists in one of Delray Beach’s landmark buildings.

“It’s more than just shoes. We take the athlete 

at any level, put them through a series of 

comprehensive tests, and direct them to the 

correct footwear.” 

The Delray Beach Running Company not only 

sells shoes – and other athletic wear – but is also 

deeply involved with the local running community. 

“We have three group runs every week,” 

Burke said, adding it brings in about 100 runners. 

“You can either run or walk. We just don’t 

send people out to run. We run with them.” 

Burke, who completed the Boston Marathon 

in April, writes and designs plans for those 

ultimately interested in running marathons. 

She has even taken people with little – or even 

no – running experience to the finish line at 

marathons. “We have taken people from zero 

to marathons, and even ultra marathons,” she 

said. “Zero means those on the couch not doing

anything at all. My oldest athlete was 68, and trained from zero to a 

marathon. It took about four months.” 

Delray Beach Running Company has a staff of 14, Burke said, including 

two certified running coaches. Its modern equipment not 

only analyzes gait, but also gives customers an accurate measurement 

of their shoe size. She said anyone looking to buy running or 

walking shoes should only go to a computer-based store to have 

their form tested. “Function over fashion when buying shoes,” she 

said. “Nothing, nothing, nothing, replaces a proper fitting. Without 

a proper fitting, it’s a Russian roulette of potential injuries.” 

She recommends people not select running shoes based on price, 

color or brand name. “There are well known brands, but they’re not 

necessarily best for your body type,” Burke said. 

Burke said she carries shoes in the lower price range. 

“I am only one of two stores in the state of Florida using stateof-the-art 

analysis,” she said. “People drive here for hours to get 

a proper fitting, because they’ve been injured from other shoes. 

Many of my part-timer residents will wait for season to come and 

buy shoes here. Some call and we’ll ship them another pair.” 

Her customers benefit from wearing a proper fit and type of 

shoe. “I have many customers who, for the first time in their lives, 

tell me they’re pain and injury free,” Burke said. “I can’t tell you how 

much that means to me. I work a lot. I’m tired, but hearing this reinforces 

the importance of my work here. We’re open seven days 

and I’m here all day.” 

Burke is proud of the knowledge she imparts upon athletes, especially 

those starting out. 

In addition to shoes, the Delray Beach Running Company specializes 

in proper running apparel and nutrition. “What brings people 

in is our brand and our lifestyle,” she said. “I had a gentleman from 

Germany wearing our shirt who posted on Facebook. Our shirts are 

becoming trendy. Our brand has reached out. I also have customers 

from Israel, England, Ireland, and from all over the United States.” 

And to exemplify how much Burke lives the Delray Beach Running 

Company lifestyle, a plastic Christmas tree bedecked with tiny 

colorful running shoes stands in her store. 

“If the community keeps supporting us, we will be around,” she 

said. “I know my customers by their first names. Our customers are 

actually family here. I know their kids, and their families, their failures 

and successes.” 

And always with an eye aimed at the future, Burke is planning 

Delray Beach’s first half-marathon for 2017. “It’s a Herculean effort,” 

she said. “We’re getting the word out. The city’s been great. 

We love Delray Beach, its fine leadership, the first responders who 

do so much each day, and the spirit of community.”

The Dynamic Duo Who Make Beauty A Verb

They say it’s lonely at the top. But not 

for Whitney Smith and Joe Ardagna. 

Both are star hair stylists and colorists 

who are on top of their game. Their salon 

(within a salon) is a hub of activity and 

transformation. So much so that they recently 

opened up the wall that separated 

the two spaces they inhabit at In the Grove 

Hair Studio. 

When they moved to Pineapple Grove to 

branch out on their own three years ago it 

was an independent gesture of expansive 

beautification. They may have had some 

clients at the time but nothing compared to 

their fan base now. 

Their quaint intimate space is always 

brewing with women of all ages. Some 

come for color, others for cut and styling 

and still others wager a war on the heftiness 

of their tresses. “We use Great Length 

Hair Extensions and put them in strand by 

strand,” said Joe, the ever patient fatherfigure 

and friend to all. “We take continuous 

education on the process of putting on 

hair extensions. You have to understand 

the diameter of the client’s hair and not 

add too much or it gets heavy and breaks.” 

If you watch Joe putting in hair extensions 

you would think he was adding highlights 

to the Sistine Chapel. With methodical 

intensity and concentration he adds 

small strands of hair to the clients existing 

hairline. Clients like Randee Wechsler 

have been coming to Joe for cut, color and 

hair extensions for years. She sits patiently 

while Joe works his magic to lengthen and 

thicken her tresses that are colored in 

what is called “Lived in.” In layman’s terms 

that means casual. “You can’t tell where 

the color stops and starts. You have to be 

an artist, it’s all about painting,” says Joe, 

who has been Wechsler’s beauty guru for 

eight years. 

Joe’s alter ego – and beautiful blond 

partner - is Whitney. Both are bookends 

in taming the wilder instincts of hair care 

and are dedicated to their clients’ beauty 

and well-being. “We want to make each 

and every person feel important and 

cared for,” said Whitney, who always has 


a fan base waiting to sit in her chair. “If 

you are good to people they’re good to 

you. God gave me a talent to do hair, but 

it’s also given me an opportunity to help 

people feel good about themselves.” 

Mary is one of those people. The local 

businesswoman comes to both Joe and 

Whitney to color her hair and to get hair 

extensions. “Joe and Whitney are wonderful 

people. My hair is fine and my skin is 

ultra sensitive and they do everything to 

make me look good.” 

It’s easy to see why everyone loves Whitney 

and Joe. Both recently taught students 

at the Boca Beauty Academy about color 

and customer satisfaction. They do this 

as an act of kindness, not for accolades or 

reward. “We teach the students about conducting 

an in-depth consultation with clients 

so they know how to make clients happy 

and get the best results,” said Whitney. 

Joe and Whitney are devoted to their 

profession and recently attended the “Behind 

The Chair” color - style trade symposium 

that features top artists and trends in 

hair. “The trend for color is about brights 

– blue, red, green and pink – some mixed 

as highlights and others stand alone color,” 

said Joe, who stresses that this crayolainspired 

trend is acceptable for businesswomen 

not just hipsters. 

And he ought to know. Joe is a Board 

Certified Hair Colorist, ace stylist and motivational 

speaker who has been cutting, 

extending and coloring hair for over 38 

years. When he met Whitney he knew he 

had met his match in both technical and 

spiritual terms. 

Both know that to make someone look 

beautiful it has to come from the inside out. 

And, they understand that being beautiful 

is feeling beautiful. “We get to know our clients 

and satisfy them in the best way possible. 

But we could never accomplish what 

we do without being a team,” said Whitney. 

Heather Karzmer is a loyal fan of that 

team. She’s been coming to Whitney for 

cut and color for six years and adores 

Whitney for her talent and goodness of 

heart. “Whitney is successful because she’s 

passionate about hair and makes people 

feel happy,” said the strawberry blond who 

came with her son Nate to have Whitney 

buzz cut his hair. 

Mary feels the same way. “Joe helped

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener 

Unless You’re in Delray Beach

My journey at the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce started a little over 

two years ago. I had recently been diagnosed with cancer, and because of my 

illness I was forced to quit my job as a publicist at an agency in Boca. 

I couldn’t stand being sedentary, but 

I knew I was too sick to return to my demanding 

PR position. A family friend of 

ours suggested I check out the Chamber 

– they were looking for an assistant to the 

President. Although admittedly I didn’t 

know much about what a Chamber even 

was at the time, I thought it may be an easy 

transition back into the work world. I had 

no idea the family and connections I was 

about to make, leave, and then intimately 

return to with open arms waiting. 

I did a number of things my first year 

and a half at the Chamber – I implemented 

our first real social media plan, helped assist 

our favorite Boss Lady, Karen Granger, 

organized front desk volunteers, planned 

grand openings, sent out press to local 

publications and much more. But something 

inside of me was itching for something 

more, on a personal level. I had always 

wanted to live in Los Angeles, and 

when a media position was offered to me 

in January of this year, I quickly moved my 

life out west. 

It was on my flight to California that I immediately 

realized I had made the wrong 

decision. From the day I started my new

Young Professionals Association of Delray 

job I’ve never felt more miserable, helpless, 

and a lack of support in my life. This was 

no Delray Beach Chamber. The job was a 

failure, and I felt like one too. After a short 

stint at the famed Fred Segal on Melrose 

(where Karen & the DBMC staff actually 

came to visit me!), I realized something: 

Delray Beach is like no other place in the 

world, and it was time to come back home. 

The support I received upon returning 

was so overwhelmingly positive I can’t 

even describe it. They immediately asked 

me to return part-time to run the social 

media, marketing and Karen’s appointments 

while I was between more doctors’ 

appointments than imaginable. (Yes it’s 

true – stress IS bad for your health). 

I’ve completely embraced the Delray 

Beach Chamber and community in general 

since my return and it has helped me 

tremendously personally and professionally. 

I decided to start my own social media 

and digital marketing company on the 

side, and the Chamber is where I found 

the tools, connections and support to do 

so. Through a Chamber membership, you 

have many resources. I met with Debbie

plan together. I’ve been attending the 

new Foundations classes, which help small 

businesses like mine find the tools to build 

their business. I’ve been more involved in 

our Young Professionals group, where I’ve 

actually met potential clients and business 

partners. None of this would have been 

possible without the support of the Chamber, 

my second family. 

If you had the pleasure of attending our 

Luminary event in October, you learned 

about out new IT campaign and what it 

means for different people. For me, it is 

a support system and a way to connect 

myself to businesses I never would have 

known on my own. It has literally been a 

learning opportunity like no other, and 

I could not be more thrilled to be back in 

such a supportive environment.

Go Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness! The 

Glam Doll Strut is the hippest stiletto extravaganza 

to hit the streets of Fort Lauderdale! On 

October 15th from 11am to 3pm, thousands of 

Divas will descend on SW 2nd Street wearing 

some of the most fashionable, fabulous and innovative 

attire imaginable. The Strut kicks off in 

grand style as the teams shimmy, shake and sashay 

for the celebrity judging panel and with a 

portion of the proceeds to benefit the Broward 

Health Foundation/Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer 

Fund. This year FOUR teams will be crowned 

Queen of Glam-A-Thon 2016 based on the number

Walk for a cure at this year’s Making Strides 

of Palm Beach walk! The Making Strides of

Pesaro, I Think this is the 

Beginning of a Beautiful friendship

The City of Delray Beach and the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of 

Commerce teamed up for a visit to Sister City Pesaro, Italy. The trip aimed at 

strengthening relationships between the two cities and facilitating economic 

development initiatives was captained by Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein. 

The city of Pesaro and its city officials 

welcomed the American delegation with 

open arms and provided them with a 

packed itinerary of culture, business and 

fun. Francesca Gallitto, Project Manager 

for Pesaro, was the lead hostess for the 

group and the person who spearheaded 

the entire sister city initiative with Delray 

Beach from the get go, recognizing the 

similarities and potential between the cities. 

The two cities may sit across the Atlantic 

from each other but they have many 

close resemblances, all the way down to a 

walkable downtown that leads to a beautiful 

beach. “Pesaro is an ideal sister city offering 

unlimited opportunities for cultural, 

tourism and economic exchanges with Delray”, 

exclaimed Mayor Cary Glickstein. 

The group attended events and visited places 

throughout the entire Marche region, giving 

them an idea of what the area had to offer 

and a sense of the people. “Like Delray, Pesaro 

is a beautiful city with beautiful people who

They visited museums, castles, beaches 

and businesses; attended a hotel grand opening, 

a youth soccer match, and even a zombie

festival. They met with officials and directors 

in sports, arts, education, industry and more. 

Future collaborations and possibilities were 

discussed in the range of a sports competition, 

art exchanges, tourism initiatives and manufacturing 

opportunities, just to start. The mayor 

and chamber delegation went on to tour all 

the city services Pesaro offers to its residents 

and businesses while tasting and experiencing 

authentic Italian culture. 

The people of Pesaro proved once again 

to be amazing hosts and great partners for 

the future. Sharing all that time and experiences 

with one another built a real bond 

between the Delray delegation and their 

Italian counterparts, so much that Mayor 

Glickstein gave their mayor the keys to the 

City, a gesture reserved for those thought of 

as family and the very trusted. “I gave Mayor 

Ricci the key to our city to symbolize the 

people of Pesaro are always welcome in Delray”, 

expressed Mayor Glickstein.

MAJOR JOSEPH M. BERNADEL 

A Man Of Service

When Major Joseph Bernadel walks the corridors of the Toussaint 

L’Ouverture High School for Arts & Social Justice he seems to glide 

above gravity. That’s not to say that he doesn’t land quite often 

during his daily duty as mentor of civility and education at the 

Charter School he co-founded 16 years ago in Delray. 

Major Bernadel’s goal in starting this landmark educational 

facility (for those of Haitian descent) is firmly 

rooted in his desire to give back and help those who 

need guidance. 

And guide he does. The retired US military officer 

is the father, teacher, role model and administrator to 

150 students who come to Delray from Haiti. Some 

come with limited language skills, life skills and educational 

challenges. 

But it is Major Bernadel’s life mission to help those 

less fortunate than himself. “My parents instilled in me 

two values I never forgot – the Benefit of Education and 

Serving the Community.” 

Those important pillars of good citizenship have not 

only been indelibly stamped on his consciousness, but 

have steered him directly into the fire belly of organizational 

leadership. 

After retiring from the military Major Bernadel 

moved to Palm Beach County and assumed the role of 

Executive Director of Milagro Center. His next role was 

to study the feasibility of Charter Schools for Boca Raton. 

Though the schools never materialized the Major’s 

arsenal for helping the underdog amped up. “When 

I left Milagro Center I had 500 pages of documents 

about charter schools, it was serendipity.” 

It sure was. Bernadel noticed in his military career 

(that took him from Fort Benning, Georgia to Hawaii, 

India, Mozambique and Haiti) that a lack of education 

was a constant in areas of great strife. “When I saw 

what was going on overseas I decided the first thing I 

would concentrate on when I retired from the military 

(after 22 years) is education. Education and community 

service make strong societies.” 

Bernadel’s commitment to serving has never wavered. 

He was a Military Attaché in the US Army, Chairman 

of the Delray Beach Housing Authority, National 

Trainer for the Anti-Defamation League, on the Board 

of the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice and Education 

Commissions, and a founding member of the Delray 

Beach Land Trust. 

But that’s only part of the story of a man whose life 

has always led to strengthening the moral fiber of society. 

“I believe in the component of social justice, professionalism 

and service. You should do everything you 

do at the highest level of integrity,” said the Vice Chairman 

of the CRA. 

And he has. Major Bernadel is the first person of Haitian 

descent to open a school in the US. He talked about 

his dream of starting a school back in 2000 to the Sun 

Sentinel Newspaper. He told the reporter he wanted to 

provide English classes, job and life skill training, and 

assistance to those who emigrated from Haiti. 

Though his dream seemed quite far reaching (and 

idealistic) at the time, it became a reality in 2001 when 

he teamed up with Dr. Diane Allerdyce. The two have 

created an ideal educational world that emphasizes 

integrity, morality and leadership. “We are the only 

school around that has no security guard. It is the responsibility 

of every one on campus to make sure that 

if you ‘see something you say something.’ We have not 

had one instance of trouble.” 

You can see why when you walk on the campus that 

encompasses five buildings. It is there that students 

are taught everything from academics to good citizenship 

and life lessons. When he sees a young girl munching 

on cheese curls he gently - and fatherly - says, “This 

is not food, its chemicals. You can eat it once in a while 

but not for lunch.” 

Major Bernadel is not a disciplinarian, he’s a humanitarian. 

“My relationship with the students is not punitive; 

it’s about them seeing me as someone to guide 

them in the course of life.” 

And that’s exactly what he does. As the lunch line 

slows down he sees a few students with loud music 

booming from their radios. With a look of slight disfavor 

he motions them to turn it down. “But this is like 

my girlfriend, it helps relieve my stress,” said one student. 

Bernadel shoots back a compassionate look and 

says, “Get another girlfriend.” 

Though his life trajectory didn’t have the same socio-

logical groove as his students, his compassion 

and charity of spirit led him to be a champion 

for those less fortunate. He speaks five languages 

and spearheaded the growth of his 

school through eight moves, and from 52 students 

to 150. “Against all odds we survived.” 

Bernadel was also instrumental in having 

the month of May declared Haitian Heritage 

Month by the Delray Beach City Council. In 

2015 he received the US President’s Volunteer 

Service Award and in 2010 he was appointed 

by the President of Haiti to the Interim 

Haiti Reconstruction Commission after 

the earthquake. 

When asked what he likes to do in his spare 

time he said, “I work seven days a week. When 

not working I participate in the exercise of democracy. 

You cannot contribute to democracy 

when you’re watching TV and eating doughnuts. 

Democracy is not a spectator sport.” 

That’s why his future goals include creating 

affordable housing, developing the NW- 

SW section of Delray and cultural integration 

of Old School Square. 

When pressed about his leisure plans for 

the future he retorts, “My fantasy is to cross 

the Atlantic in my own sailboat.” Though he 

doesn’t own a sailboat at the moment, don’t 

be surprised if you hear him whistling at you 

from a dock sometime in the future. 

You know why? Because Major Bernadel is 

not a dreamer, he’s a man who takes action 

and makes dreams become realities.

Rocky’s Italian Bistro & Bar 

Italian Food with an International Flair

{It’s been 17 years since Rocky (Robert Telesca) honed his passion for 

fine Italian dining and music and melded them together. It may have 

started out as a small bistro with 55 seats, but today Rocky’s Italian 

Bistro & Bar seats 150 and is adjoined to an upbeat intimate bar. 

Rigatoni Calabrese 

Rocky has added romance and intimacy to 

the interior space by using wood molding and 

ambient lighting. It’s almost feels like you’re 

in someone’s home or guest house – and 

you are – it’s Rocky’s home turf. It’s a place 

where you get to order what pleases your palate. 

You can pick a dish off the menu or order 

something unique that Rocky or Chef Damion 

have cooked up from their culinary ingenuity. 

Either way the homemade food is rooted in 

Italy with an International flair. 

It also beckons one to crack open a bottle 

of wine and relax into the embrace of 

Rocky’s Italian ancestry. For a nice starter 

try their house Cabernet – it’s full bodied 

and has a rich flavor. If you want wine with a 

bubbly champagne vibe try the Lambrusco, 

it’s refreshing and sweet. 


When it comes to Veal dishes, Rocky’s is 

the perfect place to honor this Italian treasure. 

Our favorite is their House Special, 

Veal Chop Sicilian. It is butter flied, lightly 

breaded, baked and topped with eggplant 

in a marinara sauce with Pecorino Romano 

and mozzarella cheese (with a side of pasta). 

This dish is not only delicious but it’s so 

large you might find yourself bringing some 

home for lunch the next day. 

Another of the House Favorites is the 

Pear Shrimp (or salmon) uniquely prepared 

with pasta purses stuffed with gorgonzola, 

mascarpone and pear in a sweet 

vermouth cream sauce. It’s a delight for 

the senses and combines a light sweetness 

with a lush tasty cream sauce. 

If you want a more international dish 

with a spicier foundation try the Mandarin 

Snapper. This dish is pan fried on high heat 

with sweet Tai Chili Sauce rub, Mandarin 

oranges and a Creole spice blend. Another 

popular seafood dish is the Salmon in a 

Crusted Gorgonzola Sauce with blueberry 

reduction over spinach. 

There are also house specials (not on the 

menu) that are readily available. One that 

Chef Damion Foulkes recommends is the 

Crab Crusted Salmon over Lobster Ravioli in 

a truffle lemon butter sauce. Another special 

dish - that has garnered popularity - is the 

Veal Osso Buco prepared in white wine with 

a celery and carrot puree and cooked for five 

hours to enhance its inherent flavorful juices. 

“We like to keep it simple but add special 

ingredients that are not only Italian 

but have a continental Italian flair. We also 

have wonderful Center Cut Filets, Prime 

Cut Rib-Eyes, Pork Chops and Veal Chops,” 

said Foulkes who rules the kitchen with his 

flavor-filled fantasies. 

Another favorite is the Surf and Turf 

served with an 8oz Prime center cut Filet 

Mignon, Lobster tail and Shrimp in a garlic 

cream sauce over sautéed spinach. It’s served 

with lobster ravioli or roasted potatoes. 

Rocky’s also offers traditional fine dining 

Italian cuisine such as Veal Parmigiana, 

Veal Saltimbocca, Veal Chop Milanese and 

assorted Chicken, Seafood, Steak and Special 

Lamb dishes. If it’s real Italian Pasta 

you want – come and enjoy. The homemade 

pasta is served piping hot and loaded with 

flavor and spices. We loved the Baked Ziti Sicilian 

with tender eggplant and mozzarella 

cheese. There’s Penne Ala Vodka as well as 

Eggplant Parmigiana, Linguine Puttanesca 

and Cheese Tortellini or Ravioli. 

Chef Damion also cooks up Pork Chops 

that beckon one to indulge. The Center Cut 

Pork Chops are stuffed with prosciutto and 

Mozzarella cheese and broiled in the oven. 

They are then served over truffle mushrooms 

with Risotto and Broccoli Rabe. 

Since Rocky’s is family owned and operated 

they are flexible about what you can 

order and how it is prepared. Jalain of Vero 

Beach learned this first hand. 

“My nephew got married and we went 

to Rocky’s for the rehearsal dinner. There 

were 35 of us and we each ordered something 

different. Rocky brought out appetizers 

that were delicious to perfection and 

methodically timed. The bartender learned 

almost everyone’s name and remembered 

what everyone was drinking! The most impressive 

thing about this establishment is 

the pride the owner takes in his meals, his 

service and his staff. Please go and see for 

yourself! You won’t regret it!” 

Others agree. “We’ve been going to 

Rocky’s for a long time and not only do 

we enjoy it but we take out-of-town guests 

there as well. My favorite is the Lamb Shank, 

but all the dishes are good. Many Delray 

places feel over trendy, but Rocky’s is still 

Salmon Gorgonzola 

good hearty fare with the owner in attendance,” 

said Dave of Delray. 

Rocky’s also has sublime desserts that include 

homemade tiramisu and the best Cannolis 

on the planet. A warning – this creamy 

chocolate chip delight is intoxicating with 

soft chocolate adorned shell, Impastata 

Ricotta Cheese lightly whipped with cream. 

Like Jalain says in his review, “It felt like 

we were on an Italian TV Cooking Show. 

Homemade food constantly came out and 

everything was fresh. The coffee and dessert 

were flawless and my palate was rejoicing.” 

It’s hard to beat that review – but Rocky 

continues to try to outdo himself and give 

diners the food they crave with the utmost 

care and attention to detail and flavor. 

Saturday night at Rocky’s is an all out 

party that combines live music with luscious 

homemade food. Start out with Sinatra 

and Motown classics and after 9pm 

groove to the electrifying sounds of karaoke 

with a professional singer. “It’s an evening 

you won’t forget – we invite you to join us 

for live music and fantastic food.”

5 lbs ground beef 

6 diced onions 

1 cinnamon stick 

5 cloves 

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 

salt 

Tomato puree 

Fresh tomato 

preparation 

Boil the ground beef, strain the meat. Sautee the diced onions to be soft, add the meat. 

Wrap the cinnamon stick and cloves together with a cheese cloth. Add the wrapped cinnamon and cloves, 

nutmeg and garlic to the meat. Bring to a boil and keep stirring, add fresh tomato and tomato puree. 

Bring to a boil. Remove the wrapped cinnamon and cloves, add salt. Simmer for 45 minutes until all the 

juices are absorbed

Major changes over the past two decades 

in the veterinary medicine field 

have expanded the use of many unapproved 

drugs for use in our pets. This practice 

of using “off label” drugs means the use has not 

been approved for the condition being treated 

or tested for correct dosage. This practice is 

your veterinarian, usually upon the advice of a 

pharmaceutical representative experimenting 

therapy with your pet. A good example is the excessive 

use of antibiotics. They are routinely administered 

before any diagnosis is determined. 

A new area of major concern is the excessive 

use of prescription pain medications for 

our pets. As they cannot verbalize their level or 

even existence of pain, how can we determine 

the dosage, frequency or the proper type of pain 

medication to be administered? Medical doctors 

and pharmacists often change your pain 

medications based on your communications 

with them. You can tell them if it is working, by 

the levels of pain you experience, if it is upsetting 

other bodily functions such as digestion, 

sleep patterns, mobility and mental state. These 

observations determine whether to continue or 

discontinue the use of these medications. 

Unfortunately, your pet can’t tell you that the 

dose is too low or too high. They can’t tell you 

that it’s causing psychological or physiologic 

changes or challenges. They can’t tell you that

They also can’t tell you that even in that 

short time, they have become addicted. They 

also can’t tell you about withdrawal. 

We are not sure if you or your veterinarian 

has ever addressed or even thought of this specific 

challenge that your pet is now facing. What 

are the symptoms? How do they feel? What is 

biochemically occurring in their body? 

Most people don’t realize that synthetic 

sweeteners are actually narcotics. Yes, that artificial 

sweetener in many pet foods can be a Class 

2 narcotic and can make your pet addicted in a 

matter of days with all the side effects and the 

withdrawal effects. This can and often happens 

with many other drugs and medications as well. 

If we are aware of the many side effects and 

adverse events associated with these medications 

and food additives, plus the inability of 

communication from our pets, why would we 

subject them to this? There are many ways 

to treat and mitigate pain, inflammation, bacterial, 

fungal and viral challenges that don’t 

have these adverse event listings. Food, herbs, 

botanicals and mineral salts have been used 

successfully since the dawn of time to allow the 

body to heal itself naturally. If your pet is sore 

from an injury, let it rest and heal. With gastric 

challenges, they may need to fast in order to 

rest and heal the digestive tract. As pet owners

progress of modern technology and the utilization 

of numerous synthetics, drugs and 

products this practice frequently mitigates 

and hides a symptom while creating additional 

profits for business. Symptoms are signs of 

imbalance and can only remedied by lifestyle 

and dietary changes. These changes can only 

occur by seeking knowledge, understanding 

and experience of the species we have chosen 

as our pet. Bouncing from one pain medicine to 

another or one brand of kibble to another will 

not cure the body. Changing the pet’s lifestyle 

closer to what nature intended will bring your 

pet greater health and happiness.

and shelter life scares him to the point 

of shaking in his cage. Once outside on a 

walk he becomes more himself, letting his 

tail wag ever-so-cautiously. Copper is a 5 

yr old Beagle, neutered, good with kids, 

cats and other dogs.

The Butterball Turkey 

Hotline’s Most Extreme Calls

Why is the Thanksgiving turkey such a mysterious creature? We eat 

it with the greatest of ease, but cooking it is another matter. Turkeys 

frequently come out overcooked, undercooked, and occasionally covered 

in edible pink glitter and body paint. (Trust me. I saw it on YouTube.) 

That’s not the worst of it, though. Butterball 

hosts a hotline that fields about 100,000 

calls each Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some 

of those calls have been publicly disclosed because 

they’re just so funny. There have been 

documented calls from first-time turkey bakers 

who worried that the bird would rise like 

a loaf of bread when cooked. There have been 

frantic calls from harried hosts that cleaned 

their birds with metal scouring pads, and now 

needed help getting the metal bits out of the 

turkey. And there has even been a call from 

an aspiring cook who wondered how best to 

carve their bird with a chainsaw, and whether 

motor oil could be used to make a good baste. 

But the following three anecdotes have to be 

the very best of the worst. They have been confirmed 

as real calls by the Butterball Turkey- 

Talk Line and Snopes.Com. As you read them, 

remind yourself that, no matter what you do, 

your turkey will probably come out better than 

the ones listed here! 

“Dude, Where’s My Turkey?” 

It’s not easy to misplace a turkey. But it 

happened to a caller from Colorado, who 

shoved her turkey into a snow bank to store 

overnight, as she had no room in her fridge. 

She called the Turkey Talk-Line to ask if it 

would be okay to eat the turkey after it had 

been stored thusly. However, she soon found 

that a heavy blanket of snow had fallen. The 

white, featureless landscape made it impossible 

for her to find where she had buried the 

turkey. We never learned if she recovered the 

bird. If not, well, at least the local wildlife had 

a nice buffet once the snow melted. 


“What’s that Smell?” 

A young mother once shared her tale of 

turkey woe. Apparently, her kids had been 

playing in the kitchen while she was stuffing 

the turkey. These kids were fond of matchbox 

cars, and had decided that their toys needed 

a new place to park. Many hours later, the 

mother discovered that the kids had chosen 

the turkey for their new parking space. It isn’t 

clear whether she discovered the toy cars immediately 

after removing the turkey from the 

oven, or if they were revealed during carving. 

Regardless, those turned out to be some 

hot, melted, and probably traumatized 

little vehicles. She should 

have entered a contest for the most 

creative stuffing recipe. 

“Help! The Turkey Ate 

my Chihuahua!” 

Speaking of things stuck 

in a turkey… 

A Kentucky woman called 

the Butterball Turkey-Talk Line 

in 1993, asking how to get her 

Chihuahua out of a turkey. It soon 

became apparent that the tiny dog 

had dived right into the carcass and 

couldn’t get back out. Pulling the dog 

didn’t work. Shaking the turkey didn’t 

work. Finally, she was instructed to make 

the hole a little bigger so that the pooch could 

escape. It worked! At least she didn’t have to 

perform a C-Section. 

Marge Klindera has been working at 

the Butterball hotline for 25 years. She 

says that callers are usually very grateful 

for the advice they receive. And what do 

Turkey-Talk Line employees eat while they’re 

at work? Usually hot soup. Marge says it helps 

sooth their throats after all the talking.

grocery shopping annoyances

Grocery shopping is a fact of life. We all have to have food to put in 

our refrigerators and on our tables at meal time, but sometimes 

grocery shopping can be an exercise in frustration. Why? Because 

of the aggravating things people do while grocery shopping, those 

glaring examples of life’s little annoyances. Here are some of the most 

annoying things people do while grocery shopping: 

People talk on their cell phones. 

Yes, cell phones can be a good thing. If 

you’re stranded on the side of a deserted 

highway with a car that won’t start, it’s 

good to know you can reach into your glove 

department and pull out your cell phone to 

get help. But is it really important to talk 

to your friend Nancy about what she had 

for dinner last night while you’re grocery 

shopping? Often these conversations get so 

intense that the grocery shopper forgets to 

steer the grocery cart accurately and a near 

collision almost occurs. Plus, imagine all of 

the high frequency waves those cell phones 

must be sending out. Let’s hope that cell 

phone waves don’t cause cancer. 

People block the aisles with 

their carts. 

Have you ever been cruising down a grocery 

store aisle eager to find the jar of peanut 

butter you made a special trip for? You 

reach the peanut butter aisle and are forced 

to an abrupt stop by a grocery cart blocking 

the section you need to access. For some 

reason the driver of the grocery cart seems 

completely oblivious to your situation and 

continues reading labels or, even worse, talking 

on her cell phone. Your stress level rises 

as you contort your tired body into a variety 

of challenging positions to reach around that 

cart and get your jar of peanut butter. So 

much for a relaxing trip to the grocery store. 

People give their children free 

reign of the store. 

Kids can be a delight but not when they’re 

given free reign of the grocery store. Children 

can become quite loud and overbearing 

when confronted with aisles of cookies, 

candies, and sweet cereals they’d like to 

take home. When their demands are unmet 

by their distracted moms, their cries can 

reach a fevered pitch. This can easily make 

you forget the grocery items you came for 

unless you have a list in hand. Plus, there’s 

always the danger of a frantic kid running 

in front of a rapidly moving grocery cart. 

Sigh! It’s just another one of life’s little grocery 

shopping annoyances. 

Some people lack grocery 

checkout etiquette. 

Many grocery stores have a checkout line 

designated as the express line. These lines 

usually clearly display a sign stating the 

maximum number of items a shopper can 

have to use that line. Obviously, some people 

can’t read or want to pretend they can’t. 

It’s not uncommon to see a shopper pull up 

to the express line talking on a cell phone, 

pushing a cart weighed down with thirty or 

more items. So much for that sign that limits 

you to ten items or less. You can practically 

see steam coming out of the ears of the 

person behind her who’s holding a carton of 

milk and needs to get back to work. 

Yes, the grocery store shopping experience 

can be a challenge when you’re confronted 

with the reality of life’s little grocery 

shopping annoyances. It’s enough to make 

you want to order your groceries online.
