Summertime, and

the livin’ is easy…

– Porgy & Bess

Well Delray, ready or not Summer is here! Our

seasonal residents have pack up and headed back

to their summer homes, school is out, and strolling

down the Ave is just a little bit easier. In the month

of June we celebrate Dads!

If you’re short on ideas on things to do with Dad on his special day,

check out our regular feature Delray Under $50! Darien Arden is an

expert at finding cool activities, and special menu offerings around

town to keep Dad fed and entertained!

Have you been to Sundy House for brunch? Well now is the time!

The property is as much a feast for the eyes as brunch is for your belly,

so make sure you go for a stroll after your meal.

Delray Beach is a special place because of the many people that

live and work in our beautiful City by the Sea. This is why we have

our regular City Person feature, to highlight the many that are doing

incredible things for our community. This month we have Yvonne

Odom. She has taught school in Delray for 45 years, comes from 5

generations of college graduates (how many can say that?!), and was

chosen to integrate Seacrest High School, which she did with grace.

And this is only the tip of the iceberg…

Enjoy June!

Preparing for Hurricane Season

When preparing for a hurricane, the most important thing you can

do is to be ready for any situation. The team at Stuart & Shelby

understands that hurricanes can be scary, but as long as you have the

proper supplies and an emergency shelter plan everything should be

fine. For more hurricane preparation tips and a list of shelters go to

We’ve put together three tips to help you get through hurricane

1. It is important to have disaster supplies on hand. Things

such as flashlights, battery operated radio, non-perishables, first

aid kit, and batteries are essential during a hurricane.

2. Checking into your home and auto insurance might be the

most important thing you do before a hurricane. Confirm that

policies are valid and that coverage is appropriate, that you have

copies of your policies, and emergency phone numbers.

3. Develop an emergency plan with your family. Make sure family

members know how to turn off gas, electricity, and water. Also,

it is critical that all children know how to contact the police or

fire department.

Don’t forget, if your home is under construction make sure that

your contractor has a plan to make sure your residence is secure

during hurricane season. If you chose Stuart & Shelby as your

contractor, feel comfortable knowing that we will ensure the

safety of your ongoing project, so you can focus on ensuring the

safety of your family.

Think of it as Iron Chef but for artists.

On June 7th, swing by the Arts Warehouse

in Pineapple Grove from 5pm –

10pm for the First Annual Art Throwdown

The Monster Drawing Rally is part performance,

art-walk, and art sale, and is

sure to be one of Delray Beach’s liveliest

fun-raising events. During the Rally, artists

create artworks in front of an audience.

Artwork can be purchased for $30 when

finished. If more than one person wants

the same piece of art they will rock, paper,

scissors to see who gets to buy it.

The night ends with the Arts Throwdown

- a 90-minute head to head challenge.

They’ll each be provided the same

art supplies and have access to a table of

unusual items to use for their masterpiece.

“We’ve already had artists from Miami,

Orlando and Tampa sign up,” says

Jill Brown, Executive Director of the Arts

Warehouse. The winning artist will receive

their own show at the Arts Warehouse at a

Delray Under $50

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,

it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or

restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach

offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back

restaurants, and events for the whole family or

nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do

in Delray Beach in June for $50 or less.

We talk all the time but are we really communicating?

June is Effective Communications Month and is not only

a great time to check your communicating self, but also

to put pen to paper and draft a little ditty. The good people at

Old School Square are hosting a Writing the Short Story workshop

and you’re invited! In this workshop, instructor Winston Aarons

will discuss the essential devices needed to write a short story:

setting, conflict, character, plot, theme, point of view and foreshadowing.

Using his broad knowledge of the short story, Winston

will show class participants how to write a formidable short

story. He will also hand out examples of short stories that will

help students develop their own style of writing, which is a great

way to fine-tune your writing voice. The class is open to anyone

who has written a short story, is in the process of writing one, or

has an idea for a short story, so dust off the old typewriter and get

to work. The workshop is held Saturday, June 8 from 1 to 3 pm

and costs $40, which is a small price to pay when you consider

that you might even have that “ah hah!” idea for the next great

short story! Old School Square is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave.

Visit to register, or call (561) 403-2954

for more information.

Remember the last time that you laughed out loud so hard

that you were basically crying? Yeah, didn’t think so. June

is National Smile Month and is a fantastic time to focus on

all that is humorously enjoyable in the world. If your partner isn’t

as funny as you’d like him/her to be and need to look elsewhere

for laughs, have no fear. Mod 27 is coming to the Arts Garage and

you’re pretty much guaranteed to have the laughing time of your

life. Mod 27 is Palm Beach County’s longest running comedy improve

company and features an experienced cast that performs

Chicago-style improve and sketch comedy. The cast also takes

suggestions from the audience and uses them to perform fully

improvised games and scenes. You never know what you’re going

to experience during the performance, but you will definitely

experience a tremendous amount of belly laughter, teary eyes and

sore cheeks. It’s important to note that the Arts Garage is a BYOW

(Bring Your Own Whatever) venue, so you can bring your own

drinks and food. Winning! The event is held Thursday, June 27

26 | june 2019 |

from 8 to 9:30 pm and tickets are only $15. The Arts Garage is located

at 94 NE Second Ave. Visit or call (561)

450-6357 to purchase tickets or for more information.

Yes, it’s hot, but who cares! It’s summertime and that means

bathing suits, tans and bike rides galore. June is Great Outdoors

Month so get off the couch, put down the phone and

get outside! If you want to hit the streets but your rusty bicycle

isn’t up for the challenge, head to Richwagen’s Bike & Sport and

they’ll hook you up with everything you need. You can rent a

cruiser for $30 for the day, which is perfect for some casual back

roads or the Avenue strolling, or you can try your luck with a

tandem bike for $40 for two hours. Or, if you feel like heading to

the beach, stop by Delray Beach Water Sports for a nautical good

time. You can rent a two-man kayak for $40 for an hour and head

out to the sea to see if you

can spot some fish or

turtles. Or, for a real

challenge, rent a SU-

Paddle Board Epoxy

porterhouse. Also, whisky and a cigar.” – Ron Swanson.

If you’re ready to get back on the meat train, are

a passenger on the meat train, or are driving the meat train,

this holiday is for you. June is National Steakhouse Month

and there’s no better time to channel your inner Ron Swanson

than now. While the Avenue boasts many lovely cuts of

meat, set your navigation to Salt7 and ready your appetite

for a wild, carnivorous ride. The Australian Lamb Lollipop

is served with garbanzo beans, mint chimichurri and Greek

feta for $19, and is a great start to the night. Or go all in and

sink your teeth into a 10 oz. Filet Mignon for $49. All steaks

are USDA prime and seasoned with their Salt7 blend and

served with their signature Salt7 steak sauce. Yum, yum and

more yum. And while the best part about a steakhouse is the

meat, you’ll find much more than that. Add some surf to your

turf with the Grilled Octopus, served with a roasted garlic

aioli, blistered tomato, pickled shallot and salsa verde for

$19. Or, enjoy the House Made Lemon and Herb Pappardelle

with braised lamb shank, blistered tomato, watercress and a

foie gras cream for $28. It doesn’t matter what you get, just

make sure you’re not visibly drooling while you eat it. Salt7

Kids: can’t live with them, but can’t leave them alone

because they’ll paint the walls with butter. June 1 is

The Global Day of Parents and is a lovely opportunity

to call the babysitter and head out for dinner and a show.

Dinner is up to you, but the show is courtesy of the good

people at the Delray Beach Playhouse, who are bringing us

God of Carnage. Earning both the Tony Award and London’s

Olivier Award as “The Best Play of the Year,” God of Carnage

is a riveting study of parenting today, and is a comedy of

manners without the manners. Two upwardly mobile couples

are brought together when the son of one couple injures

the son of the other couple in a public park. He knocks two of

the boy’s teeth out with a stick. The parents decide to bypass

legal avenues by meeting to discuss the matter. The result is

a study in just how thin the veneer of civilization is in even

the most advanced level of our society. Before the evening

is over, a high-powered lawyer, a self-made man, a passionate

human rights advocate and a very insecure housewife all

find themselves in an emotionally charged battle to justify

and defend their children’s behavior. It’s not surprising that

God of Carnage was one of the three longest-running plays

of its decade. Sound fun? Sure does! There are 2 pm and 8

pm showing on Saturday, June 1 and tickets are $30 per person.

The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 NW Ninth

St. Visit or call (561) 272-

►The Secret Life of Pets 2 will follow 2016’s blockbuster about

the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day.

Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime

collaborator Janet Healy will produce the sequel to the comedy that

had the best opening ever for an original film, animated or otherwise.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 will see the return of writer Brian Lynch

(Minions) and once again be directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable

Me series, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax).

►X-Men: Dark Phoenix - X Men face their most formidable and

powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in

space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force.

Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more

powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her,

Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor

contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she

loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men

together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to

unite - not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from

aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

June 14

►Men in Black: International - This one introduces us to two new

MIB members: Chris Hemsworth as Agent H, and Tessa Thompson

as Agent M. The plot involves them tackling the

“biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in

the Men in Black organization.” The cast also

includes Rebecca Ferguson, Kumail Nanjiani,

Rafe Spall, Laurent Bourgeois, Larry Bourgeois,

plus Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson.

►Shaft is the next chapter in the film

franchise featuring the coolest private

eye on any New York City block.

JJ, aka John Shaft Jr. (Usher),

may be a cyber security expert

with a degree from MIT, but to

uncover the truth behind his

best friend’s untimely death, he

needs an education only his dad

can provide. Absent throughout

JJ’s youth, the legendary

locked-and-loaded John Shaft

(Jackson) agrees to help his

progeny navigate Harlem’s

heroin-infested underbelly.

June 21

►Anna - Beneath Anna

Poliatova’s striking beauty lies

a secret that will unleash her

indelible strength and skill to

become one of the world’s most

46 | june 2019 |

feared government assassins. An electrifying thrill ride unfolding

with propulsive energy, startling twists and breathtaking action, Anna

introduces Sasha Luss in the title role with a star-studded cast including

Academy Award Winner Helen Mirren, Cillian Murphy, and Luke Evans.

►Child’s Play is an updated take on the Chucky horror franchise

about the evil doll who kills people. They’re keeping the original

name from the first series Child’s Play but updating everything and

re-introducing the Chucky doll as a high-tech toy called “Buddi,”

voiced by Mark Hamill. This is a little too creepy with how it connects

to everything in your home. Aubrey Plaza stars, with a cast including

Gabriel Bateman. Brian Tyree Henry, David Lewis, Ty Consiglio,

Beatrice Kitsos, and Kristin York.

►Pixar’s Toy Story 4 - When a new toy called “Forky” (Tony Hale)

joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends

reveals how big the world can be for a toy… Pixar’s latest sequel looks

like it builds on the emotions in Toy Story 3, taking us on another

journey outside of their home. All the other regular voices are back:

Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kristen Schaal, and Bonnie Hunt,

with newcomers Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele, Keanu Reeves.

June 26

►Annabelle Comes Home - Determined to keep Annabelle from

wreaking more havoc, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren bring

the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing

her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing.

But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil

spirits in the room, who all set their sights on

a new target - the Warrens’ ten-year-old

daughter, Judy, and her friends.

June 28

►Yesterday - One day everyone

wakes up and the entire world has

never heard of The Beatles. Except for

one guy, who becomes famous for

singing/playing all the classic

Beatles songs, because no one

knows that it isn’t him who

came up with all of this genius

work. As wild as that seems,

only Danny Boyle could pull

that off and he seems to have

done that. Himesh Patel (from

“EastEnders” and “Damned”)

stars in Yesterday, along with

Lily James, Kate McKinnon, Ed

Sheeran, Ana de Armas, Joel Fry,

and Camille Chen.

their mother’s death is too painful, so they

do nothing. Soon after her death, Quinn’s

husband, Alec, has acquired a new wife and

Quinn becomes a distant memory. Only her

sister, Erin, and Detective John McQuillan,

who leads the investigation, continue to

search for answers.

But as the case stalls, the formal investigation

is moved to the Cold Case division

and Quinn’s family loses hope that there will

ever be an arrest.

Can Quinn get the justice she deserves?

And, is discovering the truth always worth it?

Sherlock Holmes, need is to help

an old friend with her mad, missing aunt.

her adult life in one asylum after another,

the Great War. Although her mental state

seemed to be improving, she’s now disappeared

after an outing from Bethlem Royal

Hospital . . . better known as Bedlam.

Russell wants nothing to do with the

the vanished woman, she must use her deductive

instincts and talent for subterfuge—

and enlist her husband’s legendary prowess.

Together, the two travel from the grim

confines of Bedlam to the murky canals of

Venice—only to find the shadow of Benito

Mussolini darkening the fate of a city, an era,

owling’s wizardry as a writer is on

fulsome display” (USA Today) in

this #1 New York Times bestseller from

the international bestselling author Robert

When Billy, a troubled young man, comes

to private eye Cormoran Strike’s office to

ask for his help investigating a crime he

thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left

deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously

mentally distressed, and cannot remember

many concrete details, there is something

sincere about him and his story. But before

Strike can question him further, Billy bolts

from his office in a panic.

Trying to get to the bottom of Billy’s story,

Strike and Robin Ellacott - once his assistant,

now a partner in the agency - set off

on a twisting trail that leads them through

the backstreets of London, into a secretive

inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a

beautiful but sinister manor house deep in

the countryside.

And during this labyrinthine investigation,

Strike’s own life is far from straightforward:

his newfound fame as a private eye

means he can no longer operate behind the

scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship

with his former assistant is more fraught

than it ever has been - Robin is now invaluable

to Strike in the business, but their personal

relationship is much, much trickier

than that.

The most epic Robert Galbraith novel yet,

Lethal White is both a gripping mystery and a

page-turning next instalment in the ongoing

story of Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott.

A Nearly Normal

by M. T. Edvardsson,

Rachel Willson-Broyles (TranSLATOr)

Released June 25th

.T. Edvardsson’s A Nearly Normal Family

is a gripping legal thriller that forces

the reader to consider: How far would you

go to protect the ones you love? In this

twisted narrative of love and murder, a horrific

crime makes a seemingly normal family

question everything they thought they

knew about their life—and one another.

Eighteen-year-old Stella Sandell stands

accused of the brutal murder of a man almost

fifteen years her senior. She is an ordinary

teenager from an upstanding local

family. What reason could she have to know

a shady businessman, let alone to kill him?

Stella’s father, a pastor, and mother, a

criminal defense attorney, find their moral

compasses tested as they defend their

daughter, while struggling to understand

why she is a suspect. Told in an unusual

three-part structure, A Nearly Normal Family

asks the questions: How well do you know

your own children? How far would you go to

protect them?

Taking Charge!

Your health is important, because it is yours. You have heard the

mantra, you only get one body, so you must take care of it. From where

I am standing, that is quite true. There are a lot of factors that go into

your health, but one factor that we have total control of is choice.

We choose to eat poorly. We choose to work out or not. We

choose to live life in front of the computer or television.

These choices, like all others, have repercussions. Being

sedentary is a choice and living with the effects of that lifestyle is

your choice.

What you have to understand is that when you seek out help,

you’re seeking out not only the healthcare professional, the personal

trainer, or nutritionist, but you are seeking them out for their

knowledge, experience and insight to your problem. Again, you are

at the crossroads of choice. You can choose to accept what they are

telling you, or not. One of these choices is going to require work.

Once you have made the decision to take charge of your health,

get rid of pain, get in shape, or whatever your situation calls for,

your next step is to assemble your team. My team? Yes, you are going

to need a team of people who can help you. Is it possible to do

things on your own, to help yourself? Absolutely! However, what is

the cost? When you were in school, you were taught by a teacher

to learn something new, at which point you learned the skill and

from there apply that skill into your life. However, that does not go

for everything, you can’t adjust yourself, and do your own blood

work, but you can do the exercises you’ve learned at home, stretch

56 | june 2019 |

yourself, and start eating right all on your own.

Your team. Your team should be comprised of people whom you

trust, people you vibe well with. Building that rapport with your

healthcare providers is important. Question them! If they are not

willing to take the time to teach you, are they really the right provider

for you? A good provider will also question you and your choices,

they will push you to make changes, think outside the box for you,

but most importantly they will put their egos aside to help you find

the best solution to your problems. Even if it means you going outside

their office to do so. The answer is not always a pill or a medication.

The answer to a lot of problems just requires work and time.

So, TAKE CHARGE! Make choices for your health that will push you

past your comfort zone and into a place where you are no longer in pain

and dysfunction. Take the dog for a walk, have a leisurely stroll with

your significant other. Take charge! Make change! Live your best life!

Delray Beachers prize immediate gratification.

Now, the magic mirror can reflect a face with

tightened skin and reduced wrinkles after a

simple and comfortable sixty-minute procedure.

There are no painful injections, no burning lasers and no peeling

or scabbing a day later. A refreshed appearance can be

had without toxins, needles, cutting, fillers, or bruising. At

last we can alter nature without an incision!

ThermiSmooth is a revolutionary non-surgical procedure to

safely treat mild to moderate facial wrinkles with virtually no pain

and little, if any downtime. Using this advanced FDA approved radiowave

technology, the ThermiSmooth system precisely heats the

deep layers of the skin while completely sparing the epidermis (top

layer of the skin), leaving it undamaged. This creates deep results

without the downtime. The heat generated in the deeper skin levels

causes the collagen in the skin to contract and tighten. After

treatment, the skin begins to ramp up new collagen productions,

which improves firmness and reduces wrinkle depth. The result is

an immediate, naturally refreshed appearance.

Some tout this to be the greatest facial “happening” of all time.

Results are immediate and will last for about 48 hours. One can

actually plan ahead to look one’s smashing best when attending a

wedding, interviewing for a job, going on a first “date,” or just sauntering

down the “Ave”… Ultimately, it takes about a month for the

collagen to finish remodeling. Then voila! The maximum results

are clearly visible.

ThermiSmooth does not require anesthesia or skin cooling. Patients

can expect to feel a deep warming sensation in the area being

treated. Because the skin is not numb, the patient can describe

the depth of the feeling to the doctor, and alert the doctor if the

heat grows uncomfortable, which helps to ensure the best possible

results. Patients can also return to home or work immediately.

ThermiSmooth can be used to treat the skin on the face, including

the eye area, neck, hands and virtually any area at all. This nifty

device does not take the place of a facelift nor proclaim to offer

comparable results; however, because a full facial treatment takes

only about an hour, ThermiSmooth fits easily into busy schedules.

A single, one-hour treatment provides noticeably firmer, tighter

skin – with results that can last up to six months. Busy and beautify

can now coexist. Believe ThermiSmooth.

6 Tips To Avoid A Summer Setback

A client just recently asked me what to do about her upcoming

summer trip to Paris with her daughter; she was nervous

about losing all the gains she recently made, worried about

not exercising, worried about eating too much. My answer was

exactly this, “Go enjoy yourself, drink the wine, eat the bread.”

Trips like that don’t happen often, just enjoy and get back on

track as soon as you’re home!” She told me I was no help. But

this is the way I do things. Life is too short to be in Paris (or

wherever) and stress about eating the croissant. I’m a firm believer

that if you make your health and fitness a true lifestyle a week or 2

here and there shouldn’t do too much damage. You should be able

to relax and enjoy yourself. However, I do understand that some

people really do want to try stay on track while on vacation and are

truly fearful of falling too far off track. So here are my 6 tips to help

lessen the summer setback.

1. Intermittent Fast

I do this on the daily and even on vacation (unless a breakfast just

looks way too good to pass up). I swear keeping up with this seems

to be super helpful in lessening weight gain and makes it easier to get

back on track when I get home. If you’re unfamiliar with Intermittent

Fasting I highly recommend researching the benefits.

2. Sweat Equity

Try getting in a quick workout first thing in the morning. It doesn’t

have to be long or complicated just

something to get your heart rate up

and make you break a sweat. This

will make you feel like you at least

“did something” and in turn it could

have a positive impact on your eating

choices. Be sure to get it done before

starting your day because willpower

will lessen and your choice between

a cocktail or a workout won’t even be

a difficult one. On vacation the cocktail

always wins, trust me!

3. Sip Smart

Drink water and chose your cocktails wisely. Water

will keep your body hydrated and will help flush out

those extra toxins and sodium. If you become dehydrated,

you won’t burn fat efficiently. Be wary of tropical

vacation cocktails! Did you know that it would take a

45-minute cardio session to burn off the calories in a

60 | june 2019 |

margarita? Yikes! You can just imagine what it would be to burn off

a Pina Colada. Choose vodka and low calorie mixers (such as club

soda) with fresh squeezed fruit.

4. Be Swap Savvy

Simply swapping out a creamy sauce or substituting a rich sauce

with marinara can significantly reduce calories in a meal. Ordering

a dish with a different cooking method than what’s advertised on

the menu - grilled instead of sautéed in butter or oil, for example

can also cut calories tremendously. And of course, always go for the

baked and grilled dishes in lieu of fried foods. Most restaurants will

usually be accommodating, you just have to ask. And don’t be afraid

to ask and be “that person!” If you’re visiting family and the thought

of saying no to Grandma just doesn’t sit well, then keep the principal

of moderation in mind.

5. Pack Snacks

This is an easy one. Take healthy snacks to eat poolside or while

sightseeing. You can always make a quick stop at a grocery store too,

if you forget to bring with you. Nuts, apples, hardboiled eggs,

berries are all easy to transport and throw in your bag.

This will also help you make better eating choices, since

you won’t be “ravenously starving” at your next meal.

We have all been there!

6. Get Back On The Train

This is my best advice. Do not let your “vacation”

linger over to when you’re back home. Get back on

your food prep and get back to the gym. This is the

biggest mistake most of us make – staying in vacation

mode long after the vacation is over. This

is when things spiral out of control. Just don’t let

that happen. Enjoy your vacation and get back on

that train stat!

Cheran Marek | Douglas Elliman

15 Cheran Marek

By nicol jenkins | Photos by melissa korman

How well do you know Cheran Marek? You may know her as a top

producing Realtor for Douglas Elliman in Delray Beach. But you may not

know about her unique hobby or how she likes to spend her free time.

62 | june 2019 |

Things you didn’t know about

Cheran is anticipating a busy new season here in Delray

When sitting down with Cheran Marek, she answered 15

questions about Real Estate and her personal life.

1- How long have you been in Real Estate?

2018 made 20 years.

2-What inspired you to get into the Real Estate field?

Growing up both of my parents have owned several Real Estate

companies, so naturally I gravitated towards the business. I always

thought it was interesting, and I enjoyed the independence factor

the profession brings.

3- What sets you apart from other Realtors?

I think I always find a way to innovate. I strive to be different

from everyone else and look for the latest and greatest new ways to

market... Marketing is everything!

4- How is the Real Estate market in Delray Beach?

Delray Beach is booming. I have seen three markets in my career...the

fabricated good, the really really bad, and now. Now it’s

different, it’s a new Florida, besides Delray Beach being a one-of-akind

seaside town, our tax benefits and good weather are drawing

customers in by the thousands, the quality of life here is awesome

and everyone is making it their primary home. Delray’s market is

good because this town’s success is attractive to people of all ages.

The vibe here in Delray is fun, charming, swanky, beachy and urban

all at the same time.

5- What do you enjoy about working at Douglas Elliman?

Douglas Elliman’s marketing and overall brand in my opinion

is brilliant. I couldn’t ask for a better Broker, CEO and marketing

team. I really enjoy the agents I work alongside; everyone is genuine

and friendly. We are a big network and family.

6- To Zillow or not to Zillow?

Zillow has gotten much better, BUT it is UNauthorized information

and sometimes the “Zestimate” is incorrect, which causes trouble in

our marketplace because customers reference this site for information.

It just is not that easy to determine a value on all properties.

7- What do you do all day?

Emails, phone calls, manage pending sales, showings, research,

open houses… It’s non-stop all day long!

Cheran specializes in Downtown Delray Beach

8- Who inspires you to be better?

My husband, kids and my mom!

9. What do your weekends generally look like?

My Saturday ritual starts at 7am at Purlife gym, then my

kids have soccer games after. I always have an open house or

show property, but try to find time to relax and spend time

catching up with my family and friends.

10-What hobby would you get into if time and money

were not an issue?

Definitely flying! I think being a pilot is one of the coolest

things ever.

11- What do you specialize in?

I specialize in Downtown Delray with an emphasis on the

new construction, waterfront, Lake Ida/Eden and historic district

markets starting at $500,000.

12- Who is your mentor?

I have learned so much in Real Estate from my mom, Sue

Tauriello. She was my Broker for 18 years, she taught me so

much - to work with integrity, to always be more than your best,

to keep to the rules. I’m so grateful to have learned from the best!

13- Favorite travel destination?

I spent a lot of time in my past surfing in Costa Rica, The

Keys and Colorado.

14- What’s missing from your bucket list?

Running a marathon and writing a book.

15- What do you like to do in your spare time?

I think surfing. There is nothing more exhilarating! Salt water

therapy is the best therapy.

with selling or buying, contact Cheran Marek.

“Helping” You Feel Better and

Achieve the Look You Want!

By lisa marie | Photos by melissa korman

Todd has 20 years of experience in the fitness industry, it all

started when he began fitness training in 1998 to help control

his acute asthma condition. “The idea was to improve my

muscle tone to help with my breathing.”

68 | june 2019 |

your fitness level has many health benefits including;

better lung function, which builds your stamina.

Getting fit can also boost your immune system which can

reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections that can trigger an

asthma attack.”

Within a year of training his asthma had improved, and he was

hooked on fitness to look and feel better! “Of course, there are other

perks when getting yourself into shape” explains Todd. “Weight

loss is often the number one reason people embark on a fitness

program, along with improved mood and stress reduction.”

It was in Rockland County, New York in the gym where Todd

trained, when he was asked to show new members the best way to

improve their workout. He willingly agreed and took on that role

for a further 2 years.

With a yearning for the warmer climate of Florida he decided to

leave the cold winters of New York behind and follow his dream

of becoming a fulltime Fitness Instructor, he took the “plunge” and

has never looked back!

“After arriving in Florida, I worked at LA Fitness for a year but I always

felt I could achieve more. I decided it was time to fulfill my

dream to train clients on my own.”

He persevered and with hard work and commitment Todd has

accomplished what he set out to do and has been doing it for the

past twelve years in sunny South Florida!

His aim is to make people aware of the benefits of having an experienced

private personal trainer they can work ‘one on one’ with

at their own pace, to improve their wellbeing. His ambition is to see

them accomplish and reach their desired goal.

With a busy work schedule, Todd has limited openings but urges

you to contact him for availability. It will take commitment but he

will help you to succeed. Please call for information regards his no

charge half hour session.

Give him a call on 954-815-7796 to get your private ‘one on one’

personal training experience, and allow Todd to “Help” you feel better

and achieve the look you want!

A Business Built On

Honesty And Integrity...

By Diane Feen | Photos by melissa korman

The engagement ring is a rite of passage and perhaps one

of the most significant things one will ever own. Find that

perfect ring for your personal style, passion and budget.

Some jewelry stores dazzle you with brilliant lights and fancy

salespeople. Others are like museums with unique pieces of

valuable jewelry and watches that have history and significance.

Diamonds East is like the second scenario.

Their diamond engagement rings (in varying sizes and dimensions)

are also sparkling works of wearable art for the finger. Like

many things we wear, the engagement ring is a rite of passage and

perhaps one of the most significant things we will ever own. It

dazzles onlookers and satisfies ones need to express individuality

while melding love with the most lavish of stones.

Diamonds East specializes in stunning diamond engagement

rings in all sizes. Some have illustrious center cut stones complimented

with (or without) diamond halos encrusted in magnificent

diamond settings. You can pick the diamond you want and the setting

that creates the serenity and beauty you crave.

“We have many different diamond shapes and a wide selection

of custom mountings. If you want a unique setting, we can custom

create and make the customers’ vision come to life. We do all our

own mounting in the store so you can have the ring you love right

away. We make it fun,” said Liz.

She’s right. Diamonds East International is a large store with a

comfortable (and comforting) ambiance. You can browse without

someone hovering over you and get answers to your questions about

70 | june 2019 |

jewelry or watches. Rest assured you will be surprised by their discerning

selection of rings and watches at all price points and sizes.

“We have people coming to shop here from New York, Chicago, Miami

and all over the US because we have the best selection of diamond

rings, pre-owned and new luxury watches for men and women. We

treat our customers well and our prices are below most of our competitors.

We stand behind all our merchandise,” said Ken Mordechai.

They sure do. You can see the glowing reviews online as a testament

to their integrity and good taste in jewelry and designer

watches. Their customer service is second to none.

“I don’t usually write reviews, but after recently dealing with

Diamonds East I’ve got to say, the expertise and quality of their

services is UNBEATABLE! If you’re looking to make a jewelry

purchase or have an item serviced, consider Diamonds East. The

staff is extremely knowledgeable and most important they are

not pushy! They will take their time with you and make you feel

as if you are their best customer. After recently purchasing a preowned

Rolex Datejust, then having another watch polished and

a piece of gold jewelry repaired, they’ve got a customer in me for

life,” said Steven.

Aside from years of experience, and a diverse variety of luxurious

rings and watches, Diamonds East has a familial feel that welcomes

you with open arms. Whether you come to shop or browse for fu-

ture purchases their combined years of experience in the jewelry

and watch business is unsurpassed.

Their clientele feels this intimacy and rewards Diamonds East

with loyalty beyond compare. “We are fortunate to have great clients

that we’ve built good relationships with. They have become

our friends. Our inventory in our bridal department and in our

watch selection has grown tremendously. We try to accommodate

to all our customers’ needs and wants.” said Liz.

Their selection of collectable antique, retro-style and designer

watches are from prestigious names like Cartier, Rolex, Patek

Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Piaget, Breitling, Jaeger LeCoultre, Panerai,

and Chopard. Some are sporty others elegant, but they’re all

distinct and discerning keepers of time.

Diamond’s East is proud to

be an Authorized Dealer for

both Benchmark and Rubber

B Official. “Benchmark

wedding rings are crafted to

perfect form, shape and purpose.

Every angle has been

designed from a concept and

built to perfection. Coupled

with Benchmark’s outstanding

Lifetime Guarantee, these

rings will always uphold the

appearance they were built

to have.”

Rubber B is the ultimate

alternative strap for a vast

variety of watches. Diamonds

East offers a complimentary

installation of

any Rubber B strap purchased

at their store.

Diamonds East also stands behind all purchases. They honor

their inventory, their staff and their clientele. That’s why Mark recently

posted on their Facebook page. “I have been burned buying

high-end watches I’ve seen over the net before. However, everything

about the watch I bought from Diamonds East was exactly as

described, if not better. I will not hesitate to do business with them

again in the future.”

If you want a diamond ring and don’t know exactly what style or

color to choose Liz will tell you everything you need to know. With

over 28 years of experience she and her staff will guide you in the

right direction to purchase the perfect ring for your personal style,

passion and budget.

The diamonds sold at Diamonds East are all certified by GIA and

EGL and range from small stones to very large ones. If you found

your dream mate - and are searching for the perfect diamond -then

you’re in the right place. They have built the business on honesty

and integrity.

Just ask Adam. “This place is amazing! Family-owned and they

are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, not pushy in any way

like most other jewelers I’ve experienced. Helped me customize the

perfect ring for me to propose with. She said yes!!! Will definitely

be back!”

Diamonds East is a full-service store and offers repairs on

watches or jewelry. Their large diverse inventory consists of gold

bracelets, diamond tennis bracelets, custom diamond pendants,

diamond necklaces, Bar and Bat mitzvah gifts, baptisms, anniversaries

and other special keepsakes. They try to accommodate all their

clients’ specific needs and wants.

Come to Diamonds East for a whirlwind of excellence in taste

level, customer service and dazzling diamonds and watches.

Dash Around the World with Joel and Jeff Dash

Celebrating our 60th Anniversary

by Joel Dash | Photos by melissa korman

Since 1959, Dash Travel has been a part of traveler’s most cherished

moments from birthdays, honeymoons, anniversaries, class reunions to

bucket list trips. After graduating from Ohio State, a three month trip

driving around Europe led to the opening of Dash Travel on 42nd Street

in New York, and the start of the best job in the world.

We had branches in Mt. Vernon, White Plains and Yonkers

before our move to Delray Beach in 2001, now located in

109 countries, all 50 states, and on over 150 cruise ships?

How many people have been on an airplane, hot air balloon, helicopter

and the Goodyear blimp? How about rafting down the Colorado

River or in submarine in Hawaii and Australia, or landing ln a zodiac

in Antarctica to celebrate the arrival of the millennium walking

with the penguins.. Not to forget riding an elephant in India, camel

in Egypt, donkey in Santorini, Greece, a dog-sled in Alaska and a reindeer

sled in Finland. What a career!

“ASK ME? I’VE BEEN THERE.” Number 1 of all my trips was Egypt.

The big question is how did they ever build it. From the inside of the

Beachfront Builders & Beachfront Properties

David and Ivana Shoultz,

Turning Dreams Into ‘Realty’

by nicol jenkins | Photos by melissa korman

Looking to flip, renovate or build a new home? Beachfront

Builders and Beachfront Properties have licensed agents

to help you buy or sell your home, they can also turn your

dream home into reality through purchase or renovation.

Owner / Broker of Beachfront Properties, Ivana Shoultz and

her husband David Shoultz, General Contractor and owner

of Beachfront Builders work side by side helping clients

purchase and renovate the home of their dreams. There are many

construction and brokerage companies in South Florida, but none

like Beachfront, who together can not only help you buy or sell your

home but customize it to perfectly fit your lifestyle. The Beachfront

Team together can help you remodel your home, as well as sell it

for top dollar!

When opening their companies, this husband and wife team

wanted to combine their talents and expertise to bring a one-ofa-kind

business to Delray Beach, Florida. Beachfront Builders and

Beachfront Properties is the only office in Delray Beach that can

fulfill both your real estate and construction needs all in one. Together,

they have an in-house broker & agent team, a general contractor,

an interior designer & multiple project managers. “We like

74 | june 2019 |

Meet the owners, David and Ivana Shoultz

to take people from A-Z. A One-stop-shop. We assist in finding our

clients the perfect purchase, then help renovate it for themselves,

or sell it for top dollar” said Ivana. Not only do they help their clients

buy and sell properties, they go above and beyond to help clients

with renovations, interior design and more! David and Ivana

are regularly featured on the A&E hit reality TV show called Flip

Wars. Flip Wars follows experienced, professional home flippers as

they tackle their next big project.

Beachfront Builders, a licensed and insured general contractor,

offers a unique style of building. Beachfront does everything from

renovations, flips to waterfront new construction and specializes

in smart, custom homes. They use a sophisticated virtual software

program, giving their clients a client portal and individual app that

allows their clients to monitor daily progress of their entire project,

Beachfront understands that building or purchasing a home is

not only a big decision, but an emotional one, and they are there

with the professional support for their clients every step of the

way. “We love what we do, whether its building future homes for

our troops or working with our clients, we try to make the process

seamless and as fun as possible” says David, who shows pride in his

veteran and family-owned business. David, fluent in Spanish and

his wife Ivana, fluent in multiple languages are able to offer their

services to a wide spectrum of clients.

As for Beachfront Properties, there is a lot of competition to be a

big name brokerage in South Florida. What sets Beachfront Properties

apart is the small boutique feel, with a gorgeous, modern office

located on Atlantic Ave, filled with hardworking agents full of energy

and passion. With that being said, this really sets them apart

from others because boutiques are so much more powerful than

bigger corporations. “We really like that family feeling and try to

have fun with our clients while making their real estate needs our

number one priority” Ivana stated. Each Friday afternoon Beachfront

Properties invites clients to come by for their ‘Champagne

Friday’ to meet and chat about your real estate goals while getting

to know their team better.

To truly act as an entrepreneur, you have to think like an entrepreneur.

At Beachfront, you can expect to find only the hardest

working young professionals in the industry. Beachfront Builders

and Properties are two of the fastest growing companies in Delray

Beach and beyond. David and Ivana invite you to stop by one of the

upcoming Friday afternoons for a glass of champagne. Cheers!

Their clients praise the team for their dedication in helping them

with real estate.

“Dealing with general contractors could be very stressful. This

was NOT the case with Beachfront Builders! The owner David

and his crew were very competent, reliable and most importantly,

trustworthy! Communication was effective and the level of skill

demonstrated, was above standard. He listened to what I wanted,

made innovative suggestions, then transformed my house into a

quaint, modern home, along with being mindful of my budget. The

quality of craftsmanship and competence demonstrated by Beachfront

Builders made my remodeling experience stress free with a

beautiful end result!”

“Ivana is the agent you want selling in your community. The

worst thing that can happen to property values is to have a home

sit on the market for a long time. Ivana does not let that happen.

Working with her contractor husband David they are able to repair,

renovate and anything else that your property needs to make

it move fast. You cannot go wrong with this team.”

unity school

Creating Future Scientists

By Carlie Partridge | Photos by Bea Byers

At Unity School of Delray Beach, science comes

to life! Year-round research and design projects

engage students in an immersive stem curriculum.

This Spring, 6th graders went on a class trip to Marine Lab

in the Florida Keys where they studied the marine ecosystems

of our state. Upon their return, they transformed one

of Unity School’s technology classrooms into an interactive “museum”

and designed activities for Unity’s elementary-age students.

Younger students were invited as “museum guests” allowing 6th

graders to share their knowledge and inspire other students. This

is just one example of Unity’s innovative, school-wide approach to

celebrating scientific learning!

Each year, student projects are showcased on campus at Unity’s

annual Future Scientists and Engineers Conference (FSEC).

The FSEC event transcends the model of a traditional science fair.

Melissa Hassan, an Innovation Specialist at Unity, sees the conference

as a way to deepen student learning.

“FSEC was inspired by the idea that students should have an opportunity

to put on their scientist and engineer ‘hats’ and present

their work to an authentic audience, in a conference style setting,

just as adults would,” said Mrs. Hassan.

Students in grades 4 through 8 participated in the 2019 FSEC,

and families attended as guests. “The conference this year started

out with a keynote speaker, former Unity School student Joseph

Rubsamen. Currently a senior at Oxbridge Academy, Mr. Rubsamen

shared his research investigating wastewater chemical composition

in our local waterways. “Bringing Mr. Rubsamen in as keynote

speaker was inspiring and showed how Unity School students can

76 | june 2019 |

Unity School’s technology classroom transformed into an interactive Florida ecosystems museum

begin making an impact on their local communities through their

scientific endeavors,” said Mrs. Hassan.

At this year’s FSEC conference, the exhibit hall showcased 4th

grade experiments including poster presentations and experiment

demonstrations. 5th grade students shared their Rube Goldberg Machines--complex

machines designed to do simple tasks. 7th graders

showcased their design thinking with an inventions project.

Teachers and students gather at FSEC to watch dragster cars race. The cars

were designed and printed by Unity School 8th grade technology students

Former Unity School student Joseph Rubsamen was the keynote speaker

at the school’s annual Future Scientists and Engineers Conference

“Students worked on upright peg boards to design Rube

Goldberg machines that use levers, ramps, gates, magnets, and

wire. The machine has to accurately perform its function. One

group’s project featured a machine that would pop a glitter

balloon based on the movement of marbles down chutes, adding

a little sparkle to the conference,” said Unity School fifth

grade teacher Katie DiPietro.

Middle school students presented their research projects at

the FSEC, and a panel of selected students gave breakout session

speeches presenting their work, which included a study

on cell phones and distraction and a prototype for an electromagnetic

propulsion device. Student speakers included eighth

graders Lola Plasencia, Ella Robbins and Liam White and sixth

grader Aidan Smith.

Another highlight of the FSEC is the 8th grade presentation

of their carbon dioxide dragster race car designs. In an interdisciplinary

project between science and technology, students

learn about Newton’s Laws and basic mechanical principles,

then use a CAD (computer-assisted 3D design) program to

envision and create their own race cars. Student cars are 3D

printed in our technology labs, and then raced on a special

track in front of a live audience.

“From the CO2 dragsters to the individual and group student

projects, I was proud to witness such growth of student interest

in science,” said Unity Middle School science teacher Nathalie

Charles. “Students took such agency of the research and design

process for their experiments. It was a pleasure to observe the

excitement and creativity and overall enthusiasm shine through,

and sharing it with our families and community strengthens our

commitment to this kind of innovation,” said Ms. Charles.

The 2019 FSEC also featured Unity School’s Lego First Robotics

Team sharing their robot obstacle course. The team was

recognized with a Lego First League trophy at a regional qualifying

robotics match this season for excellence in robot design.

“When you look around at FSEC, you catch a glimpse of the

future researchers, inventors, scientists and thinkers. We get

to see applied creativity, and celebrate the endless curiosity at

the heart of science,” said Carlie Partridge, an Innovation Specialist

at Unity School. “An event like FSEC makes the learning

visible and memorable!”

Meet the Expert Stylists

When you walk through the doors of Gypsy Rose Salon in

Boca Raton, you are greeted by the talented staff.

The team of 7 hair professionals are also experts in the

art of color and style.

Owner Jessica Lochiatto has over 20 years of experience in hair

coloring. She finds pride in staying current with the color trends.

“So many colorists are antiquated. I pride myself on challenging

myself and educating myself. I also educate all of my stylists. Everyone

on my team is skilled in their trade. It’s important for everyone

to be up to par,” said Jessica.

Jessica knows all about the beauty and hair business. She grew

up watching her mom and uncle work in hair. She named the salon

after her mom, Roseann, known as Rose, and uncle Caesar, who

would tap dance to the Broadway soundtrack of Gypsy Rose Lee,

at his salon.

She has worked in many well-known high-end salons in Boca Raton,

including The Green Room, Salon Duda, Parthenon, and then

decided to open her own salon, with the best hair stylists and colorists

in the industry.

Lead hair stylist and colorist Allison has over 15 years experience

in perfecting hair. She is very well versed in all types of hair

color techniques, big on trends, making a name for herself as a

relevant hair colorist and stylist, and is ready to learn the newest

methods of color application and styling. Behind the scenes, she is

discovering who did it, how it’s done, how to create it, and then

bringing it to Gypsy Rose Salon.

When opening her salon, Jessica

Lochiatto wanted to bring only the best

experts in hairstyle and color to the team.

Jen, a hair stylist for over 16 years, has been trained from renowned

hair experts including Vidal Sassoon, is certified in

straightening techniques, and specializes in cutting and styling.

Tara is a natural beaded row (NBD) extension expert, and has

been trained with Vidal Sassoon and Bumble and Bumble. She specializes

in a variety of hair extension methods and has styled hair

for runway shows and commercials in Miami.

LC is a young talented colorist who has been transforming hair

and making it her art since 2013. She specializes in Balayage and

loves creating natural and beautifully crafted highlights.

Kristin, a makeup artist and hair stylist has over 11 years experience,

formerly worked at the Boca Raton Resort. Bring in your lashes and

she’s an expert at applying them! She is very talented and available for

makeup and hair for all types of events including bridal and updos.

“The salon has grown so much in 10 months. Our Instagram marketing

has over 800 followers in 8 months. My main goal was to

have a creative staff that gets along with everybody and wants to

keep learning. Every person who walks in the door is always having

a good time and we pride ourselves on that. Everyone says I love

being here with the staff; it’s not intimidating. Everyone is really

friendly and gets along with each other,” said Jessica.

“We are a high-end salon but we are a small boutique salon and

we do not have an uptight vibe. We offer the best products and the

est customer service for our clients. Some salons have forgotten

that along the way and we want to bring that back. Everyone

that walks in is treated like a friend,” said Jessica.

The salon is a perfect place to have a girls day with your

friends, to get ready before a night out on the Ave or to host a

bridal or bachelorette party.

“It’s very important for me to have a girls place where they

can talk and laugh. It’s like being with your girlfriends on the

Avenue. Gypsy Rose Salon is like being in a lounge,” said Jessica,

“It’s all about glamour. It’s a place you want to come to get

glammed up before your special occasion or night out. Many

women stop here to get their makeup or hair done before they

go out on a Friday night. They get a glass of champagne, chat

with friends and the stylists and get their hair done.”

The salon owner continues to educate her stylists and colorists

on the latest in products and hair trends.

“I like to educate my stylists and reward them with getting

classes. I want them to be the best at what they do, and the

only way to be the best is to constantly educate yourself on

this industry,” she said.

Customers say they receive the 5-star treatment when they

come to the salon.

“Lovely atmosphere at Gypsy Rose Salon. Everyone was

smiling and friendly. Jessica is absolutely amazing. I went to

her to fix my botched hair that was done at another salon. She

sat with me and talked about exactly what I wanted. Really

amazing! She knows her stuff; she’s a perfectionist with coloring.

Took hours to fix it and she wasn’t rushing. She really

took the time to correct my coloring. I will not be going to any

other salon ever again! They have the best products and the

best staff!” stated another satisfied customer.

Come meet the expert hair stylists and colorists of Gypsy

Aqua Garden

Grow Your Own Food And Save The Planet

By diane feen | Photos by Jacob Leach

When you think of growing your own

herbs and vegetables you might think,

“but I don’t have a garden or farm.”

The good news is that you don’t need one – thanks to environmental

wunderkind Mason Silvia.

Mason has devised a system that is ecologically sound and

relatively easy. As the CEO of Seventh Generation Solutions, Mason

has created growing systems that fit in small (or large) spaces inside

or outside your home. They not only create a calm Zen feel, but

you can grow your own veggies and herbs right in your own home.

There is a small system – called the Mini Garden that grow

herbs, and larger systems that can grow enough veggies to feed

your entire family.

The logistics are sound yet revolutionary. An Aquaponic system

starts out with a grow bed (in various sizes), an LED light and a fish

tank. The fish nitrates fertilize the plants, and the water from the

grow bed sustains the plants (herbs and veggies).

It’s the perfect symbiotic relationship – with the plants serving

as an organic filter for the water. There is no need for soil and the

space it takes to grow a garden is minimal.

Aqua Garden is also focused on creating luxury systems custom-built

for your home. This allows you to decide where you

82 | june 2019 |

want your system, how large it should be, and which one fits into

your lifestyle and décor.

“We can put grow beds on pipes outside or in your living room.

With hydroponic growing methods, we can create a koi pond (inside

or outdoors) and put the grow bed anywhere you want. The

water feeds the plants by way of pumps (that can be hidden) and

the system is self- cleaning,” said Mason.

The best part is that there are no pesticides, the herbs and produce

taste better, and you can grow veggies year around. Instead of

Farm to Table, this momentum is more like Aqua-Farm to Table. It

works like Mother Nature intended it to be.

Since this concept is very new – and incredibly important in

keeping sustainability on the planet – Aqua Garden is offering free

workshops. In a recent workshop guests were given seedlings and a

grow bed so they could learn how to create their own aqua garden.

“We had 20 people come to our showroom and make their own

aquaponic system. It was a hands-on event. We showed everyone how

to make their own grow bed and add seedlings to create a system

with no soil,” said Mason, who spearheaded these hands-on seminars.

They provide all the materials needed to get started, and Mason

and aquatic specialist Ron Sieber answer any questions you might

have. They also explain each step and its end result.

“We had a great turnout at our first workshop, and we want to

thank everyone who came out to support us! As always, we loved

having an opportunity to educate you on aquaponics and its many

benefits. We hope this important first step will have a ripple effect

toward a more eco-friendly lifestyle for you and your family.”

Not only will this type of farming create less pollution, but it will

solve the water shortage problem facing the country and the planet.

The greens are also pesticide free and chemical free, which is

optimal for your health.

When it comes to creating an aquaponic design the sky is the

limit literally. If you have a lot of space in your yard, they can create

a beautiful and practical aquaponic system anywhere. You can

have a koi pond, the greens can grow on a vertical pipe, and you can

have as many grow beds as you want. It can be a small aquaponic

garden, or one large enough to feed your family. Just contact Mason

at Aquaponics and he will arrange for a consultation and come up

with a customized plan perfect for your home.

“Aquaponics can play a major role in solving the problem of high

organic vegetable prices. It can be used for both large scale crop

production as well as growing food in your home. Growing food

with aquaponics requires very little work – simply feed the fish and

the rest of the system handles itself!”

Fruits and vegetables grown with aquaponics can be harvested

year-round if grown indoors. A large space is not necessary to produce

a sizeable amount of food. A two or three-foot grow bed can

easily produce food to feed an entire family.

The folks at Aquaponics will answer any questions you have and

set up a system perfect for your needs. You can get a very small fish

tank or a large one – it’s your choice. But one thing for sure, growing

your own organic produce is something many people dream of

– yet don’t know exists.

“We are teaching people how to grow their own food with Aquaponics.

We’re also creating a movement to prove that sustainability

and ecological awareness will solve societies toughest problem –

carbon emission and clean air,” adds Mason, who is absorbed in the

big picture of this revolutionary culinary eco-system.

Aquaponics can also change the way farming is done in the future.

It takes a quarter of the land, very little water and produce can be

grown vertically. Mason is bullish about showing restaurant owners

how to grow their own herbs and produce via Aquaponics systems.

“One seed can give the whole planet it’s future. You don’t need

fertile land, it requires 90 percent less water, there’s no run-off, no

pesticides and it grows quicker and tastes better.”

Mason’s message is optimistic, yet realistic. “We are running

out of land, water and sustainability on earth, Aquaponic systems

solves most of these problems.”

Call for a free consultation and sign up on their website to be notified

about the next interactive workshop at their office in Delray Beach.

Summer Retreat

By diane feen | Photos by melissa korman

It’s time to take a little break from your Yoga

Mat and head over to Massage Heights to

experience a different form of nirvana.

This Delray spa offers healing massages, hot stone therapy,

reflexology and facials at affordable prices. It’s known as a

blissful place where you can experience different healing

therapies from top to bottom.

An excellent reason to make your way to Massage Heights Delray

is because they are offering $99 special ‘Dual Service’ for first time

guests and members. This includes a 1-hour massage AND a 1-hour

facial! Alternatively, if you need to take the “weight off your feet”

dive in to their summer special and add a Margherita Foot Scrub to

your next massage treatment. Settle back, relax and let the pressures

of the day escape your body!

In the geographic components of your body, there are products

and services that heal specific areas. For brightening and lightening

unwanted discoloration on your face, they offer Dermaologica’s

new Pro Power Peel with a customized facial designed just for you!

They also carry Dermalogica’s high performance Biolumin-C Serum

with ultra-stable vitamin C and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5.

If you ask Retreat Director Danielle Desautels, she’ll tout the

results of this state-of-the-art facial serum. “I have been using

Biolumin-C serum for two months and I am getting amazing results.

It brightens dark circles, sunspots and reduces fine lines

and wrinkles.”

If you’re ready to pull the trigger on a state of calm, check out their

Trigger Point Massage. It helps release constricted muscle areas to

relieve pain and help increase mobility. “Similar to a deep tissue massage

Trigger Point Massage therapy can help relax your muscles and

release tension, often after just one session,” said Desautels.

For those who feel the weight of the world on their shoulders, lift

it off with Cranial Sacral Therapy. CST is a gentle, hands-on massage

that eliminates tension in the body that can stem from the base of

the skull. It relieves headache or migraine pain and chronic neck

and back pains. Developed by an Osteopathic Physician, CST has

worked miracles for a myriad of conditions.

Massage Heights Delray was built on the premise that everyone

needs to slow down, relax and luxuriate in a state of tranquility.

Owner Sandra Bonfiglio McNiven learned this firsthand. The family

law attorney and 24/7 mom found that getting massages was

84 | june 2019 |

a great stress releaser for her. “My job was so stressful that I

found that going to a spa regularly helped me relax, clear my

head and reduce my stress level.”

That was the impetus for her to open Massage Heights Delray

Place three years ago. Since then they have added many healing

modalities into the massage experience and now have over 20 licensed

massage therapists (including four liscensed estheticians).

Though the art of Massage has been around for 5,000 years,

there are new techniques that have widened the scope of this

hands-on healing. Energy Massage is one of them. Known as a

gentle transfer of energy from healer to patient, it promotes both

physical and mental wellbeing. It also creates a sense of calm and

restoration rarely achieved in the waking state.

Massage Heights Delray also introduced a new form of mindbody

relaxation for brides. Known as “Bridal Boot Camp,” it begins

three months before the wedding and includes one elevated

facial every month. “When you’re getting married you are under

a lot of pressure and need to relax. We give you membership

prices for additional massages and facials as well,” said Desautels.

If you’re getting married Massage Heights Delray will host your

bridal party with all the fanfare of celebrity. For two hours each

person in your bridal party will get massages, facials and chocolate

covered strawberries. Like a retreat, you’ll get robes and relaxation

in the confines of this private spa-like environment.

If you want to create a spa experience at home, Massage

Heights Delray Place has products for sale that will allow you

to re-create this healing experience. Their new soy-based candles

from Coco La Vie come in eight scents to create a mood

and method for total serene and restoration. They come in Evergreen,

Lavender, Citrus, Bourbon, Winter Berry and others.

The candles are hand-poured in an elegant white glass and

made with a natural coconut wax blend.

Another new product to take your spa experience homebound

is the “To-Go-Spa.” It consists of a variety of products

infused with collagen, amino acids, and vitamins designed for

the face, lips, and neck. They also offer Lifestyle Programs,

with discounted services and elevations to uplift and rejuvenate

your day. Massage Heights Delray was built on the concept

that a healthy body creates a healthy lifestyle. It’s why

Bonfiglio McNiven opened this oasis of healing and relaxation,

and it’s the reason they continue to help those who want to

indulge in life’s simpler pleasures.

Selling Delray Beach Style

With Boynton Beach Zip Code

By diane feen | Photos by melissa korman

They say if you throw a stone

down Federal Highway it might

just reach Boynton Beach.

That is why Posh Properties’ Realtors are touting it as the newest

live, work, play destination for fun and family living. And,

the cost of housing is much less than in coveted Delray Beach.

So, it seems like a win-win for everyone. “Living in East Boynton

Beach is not just a place to live, it’s a lifestyle,” said Jami Cauvin, a

Marina Village resident and a Posh Properties realtor in their Boynton

Beach and Ocean Ridge office.

Cauvin calls living in Boynton Beach’s Marina Village, resort living

to the max. “Where else can you go for a walk out your front

door, get a cup of coffee at the Marina Café (in the building), go

across the street and jump on a charter fishing boat or a jet ski

without getting in your car?”

She has a point indeed. Downtown Boynton Beach and the Marina

District has fast become a pedestrian village, where you can

walk to the beach, shops, restaurants, Oceanfront Park or Hammock

Park. There are two restaurants just steps away, and you can

go kayaking in the Boynton Beach Inlet before you go to work.

Beverly and Jami at the Posh Properties Boynton Office, just across the street

86 | june 2019 |

Marina Village offers great grounds, walkable to local eateries

That’ s not all. You can enjoy live music at the in-house Marina

Café on Friday and Saturday during the Happy Hour from 4 to 7 pm.

“Living in Marina Village is so much fun, that’s why I fell in love with

it,” said Cauvin who has traveled the world and spent summers in

the Jersey Shore before moving to Boynton Beach.

Posh Realtor Beverly Mandell also finds the intimacy and village

feel of Marina Village a comforting and exciting living opportunity.

She also sees herself and others in the building as pioneers of a real

estate destiny that transcends zip codes. “There is a renaissance

going on in Boynton Beach. There are compelling art projects like

Kinetic Art and a “Town Square,” that will have a hotel, residential

units, commercial space and a cultural center.”

Mandell also covets the camaraderie that permeates the premises

at Marina Village and the immediate area. “I see neighbors

helping one another and going on trips together. A group of us eat

breakfast at our café and we socialize in the Marina Clubroom.”

In Marina Village and the Marina district itself, it’s not just a

building, there is a strong sense of community, said Mandell. “No

condominium building is perfect, but Marina Village is as close to

perfect as I have ever seen.”

The incredible growth and interest in Boynton Beach is getting

national attention and city leaders are hearing the call. A new four-

Inside the well appointed and lobby of Marina Village

story building will house City Hall and the library, there will be an

amphitheater and playground with two parking decks and a fire

station. “There is a lot of value in buying in this community, it’s still

in its infancy,” adds Mandell.

There are also art galleries and a Boynton Beach Art District with

art walks on weekends. Great restaurants abound - on and off the

water - with complimentary parking (that’s a plus) and a sweeping

revitalization plan for the downtown area.

David Scott, director of economic development and strategy, said

this to the press: “We hope that it wins lots of awards.” He also said

he hopes the city will become a destination that will draw people

who might have overlooked the city in the past in favor of more

exciting areas in South Florida.

That might have been the case in the past, but Boynton Beach

has grown up and out. Many national developers and brands have

Boynton Beach on their radar and have staked their claim to be involved

in one of the many current developments in the area.

That makes Posh Properties quite happy. Especially Mandell

and Cauvin. Both are dedicated to their careers and Posh, as well

as their clients’ welfare. “I take pride in listening closely to each of

my client’s unique needs. It could be a seller who is downsizing because

of life’s changes or a buyer who wants their large waterfront

dream home. I am not only there for them through the closing table,

but also beyond as a valuable resource,” said Mandell.

Cauvin has lived in different areas along the coast of Florida and

found her niche in Boynton Beach. Her previous career was as a

private investigator and she is very knowledgeable about different

Florida locales.

“I am passionate about real estate and feel it’s important that

people live exactly where they are happiest. I have investigated

fraud for most of my adult life and am accustomed to being held to

very high ethical standards. I am dedicated to my customer, honest,

reliable and responsible,” said Cauvin.

So is the owner of Posh Properties, Jerilyn Walter.

“Posh Properties has fast become the agency of choice for buyers

and sellers who want to work with local agents that put the

customer first and understand the local market, its trends and rising

values. Posh Properties has been in the real estate business in

South Palm Beach County for many years, and we will be here for

many more,” said Walter, Broker-Owner of Posh Properties.

Their excellent customer service and top-notch realtors have

garnered repeat business and referrals that are the lifeline of the

real estate business. “We work with buyers, sellers and investors in

all real estate transactions.”

Educational Hero

Yvonne Odom is as multi-faceted

as a crystalized gemstone.

She is also as coveted.

The reasons are varied – but the consensus is that Odom is

a one-of-a-kind force to be reckoned with. She embraces all

people and has spent her life nurturing, supporting and encouraging

She also made history.

In 1961 Odom was happy with her school (Carver Middle) and

happy with her life. She had a boyfriend (Eddie Odom Jr), was the

captain of the girls’ basketball team and an attendant for the Royal

Homecoming Court.

But her life was to change drastically – and dramatically – in one

fell swoop.

“I came home from school one day and my father told me I was

chosen to integrate Seacrest High School. I didn’t want to do it at first,

but my teachers and classmates at Carver said, ‘do it.’”

Though they didn’t let her ride in the Seacrest High School bus

(teacher Ben Cain drove her) Odom was the perfect study of equanimity.

She melded into the school seamlessly with a bit of cautiousness

and a load of character and strength.

“I knew I had a purpose. I needed to be successful because so many

people were depending on me. I was a good student and didn’t curse

or fight,” said the retired Delray teacher.

Though she heard some name calling in the distance, Odom said

most of her fellow students and teachers were good to her. There

was some fear that little Ms. Odom might be over her head integrating

Seacrest High School, but those people must not have known

her very well.

But friends like Clovis Moodie do. “Yvonne is an incredibly strong

person and has battled giants and come out victorious. She was

fiercely dedicated as a teacher, and leader in the educational system,

and continues to be committed to improving the quality of life for

those she interacts with.”

Odom was a legendary teacher in the Delray school system, a visionary

in planning for the future of Delray Beach, and a mentor to

students and teachers who walked beside her.

“Mrs. Odom was the epitome of an excellent teacher while I had

the honor of knowing her. She’s always been a knowledgeable champion

of teacher’s rights, a mentor, a prayer warrior, a confidant and

a friend. She also played a key role in making me the educator I am

today,” said Carver Middle School teacher, Robyn Wilson.

Odom made it her business to make sure her students took learning

as seriously as she did. Since many were ‘at risk’ she knew they

needed nurturing and support rather than punishment and shaming.

“I told them ‘I am in charge of these four walls and when you come

to school you need to learn.’ Being involved in their lives was important

so I could see their talents outside the classroom. This way I

could work on the total child and find their strengths.”

Odom had good educational role models. Her father, Rev. Dr. Randolph

M. Lee, earned a BA Degree from Bethune-Cookman College

and did graduate work at University of Pennsylvania. He taught public

school and moved the family to Boynton Beach to become the Pastor

of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

Dr. Lee’s leadership was so auspicious (the church website says)

it was impossible to mention all his accomplishments. He was, however,

instrumental in purchasing property in Boynton to build a sanctuary

and Christian School.

Her grandfather was also a college graduate. “In my family we have

five generations of college educated people, that is very unusual for

black people.”

But there is nothing average about Odom. She has been married to

Eddie Odom Jr. for 53 years and taught school in Delray for 45 years.

She also beat stage 4 lung cancer.

Odom had chemo every three weeks (for two years) and beat the

slim odds of survival. “God was in this whole plan with me. The surgeon

on call was the best heart surgeon. She prayed with me and

asked God to guide her hands.”

Her friends and family got down on their knees to pray for her, but

Odom wasn’t going down without a fight. “Instead of saying,’ why me,’

I said, ‘why not me.’ I knew I was going to fight this.”

Rest assured Odom did fight and came out victorious.

But, that’s how she rolls.

She was always strong and determined despite any roadblocks

put in her way. She played basketball and track in high school, and

archery and soccer in college (at FAU and PBC). She was a teachers’

union representative, involved in the Classroom Teachers Association

and a club sponsor for the Future Teachers of America.

Odom was a track coach at Carver Middle School and spearheaded

the “The Carver Way” with other teachers at the school. The goal

was to improve student behavior and expectations through a unified

voice that extended into the community.

“Yvonne has consistently demonstrated integrity, strength, professionalism

and commitment to students, schools, family and community.

She was fiercely dedicated to her profession as a teacher (and

leader) in the educational system and is committed to improving the

quality of life for others,” said Moodie.

Odom is also very involved in the Delray Beach American Little

League Baseball League her husband started in Pompei Park. She’s

served as their president, secretary, and now the VP.

She has three children – educators Joi, Eddie III, and Candi. And,

seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

When you meet Odom, you feel the texture of her character and the

dimension of her innate goodness. She exudes the enormity of her

past yet is humble about her accomplishments.”

“I like to leave a little piece of myself in everyone I have known. I

am forthright, honest and caring.”

You bet she is. Odom is also down-to-earth and selfless. The city of

Delray Beach is lucky to have her as a citizen and educational mascot.

A Divine Feast

Sunday Brunch is a celebratory tradition in America. No

matter what your age or culinary predilection, brunch is

always a time of rest, relaxation and good food.

There is one exception – The Sundy House.

Brunch at the historic Sundy House is tantamount to visiting

the angels in heaven. The food is divine with the flavors

and flattery of its heritage. Food stations are everywhere you look

filled with savory cedar planked salmon, heavenly eggs Florentine

and Benedict, honey truffle chicken, scrumptious lambchops and

dozens of other dishes that beckon you like a lost lover.

The surroundings are lush, tropical and tranquil and the service

meets the highest standards of excellence. You can walk around this

idyllic garden-scape between courses or let the sound of water and

wind serenade you.

If love had an equal culinary extension, then The Sundy House

would match its most reverent expression. There are homemade

croissants to devour, fresh berries that melt in your mouth, a seafood

station with fresh shrimp, oysters, crab and shrimp salad, an

omelet station, salad bar and more.

100 | june 2019 |

Some of our favorite dishes – that are quite healthy in countenance

- were the Asian infused Seaweed and Raw Tuna with sesame

seeds. These dishes depend on their freshness and quality to

determine their inherent greatness. And, the Sundy House passed

this test with flying colors.

There are also food stations that surround the premises - from a

Carving station, Seafood Bar, Charcuterie and Salad Bar, Omelet Station,

Granola and Yogurt Station - as well as breads, French toast,

waffles, sauces, herbs and more.

One outstanding dish was the slow cooked Short Ribs with carrots,

rosemary and onion served with cheddar cheese grits. This flavorful

meaty treasure was so good it weighed in as an all time favorite.

Guests Roma Witten and Sandy Reyes were wowed as well. “The

ambience here is superb and the service is excellent. We loved the

lamb chops and crab legs. It was like being at a wedding and sitting

in a garden of Eden. We also loved that we were told we could stay

a while and enjoy the beautiful gardens; no one rushed us out,” said

the Delray duo.

When you come for Sunday Brunch your meal comes with a

choice of Mimosas, Bellinis, Champagne, Bloody Marys, white or

red Sangria or soft drinks. Not much can interfere with the delicacy

of Mother Nature’s greenery, live music and food from the Gods.

Before one bids adieu to the Sundy House, you must indulge in

some of the most delightful decadent desserts imaginable. They

have tiny chocolate mousse cakes with intoxicating toppings, white

chocolate mousse petit bites, cupcakes, mocha and chocolate petite

fours, and an ice cream bar to tantalize your taste-buds. It’s an endorphin

rush for sure.

That is the reason the Sundy House has been voted one of the

top outdoor brunches in the country. This comes as no surprise

if you’ve tried their Sunday brunch, Saturday brunch or dinner

(Tuesday through Sunday).

Last month they had 12 weddings on the premises because the

Sundy House is so beautiful. If romance were a flower – it would

bloom on the premises without water.

Saturday brunch is not a buffet, but the food is delicious. How do

Nutella French Toast Bites sound? Or Herb Sautéed Shrimp with

White Cheddar Grits, Chorizo Gravy and a Fried Egg? They also

have Eggs Benedict with homemade buttermilk biscuit (to die for),

Crab Cake and Potatoes, seared Duck Breast, a Yellow Fin Tuna

Poke bowl and more.

If you want to experience the mystical and magical presence of

earth’s most precious gifts, then dine at the Sundy House at night.

There are over 5000 plants, a quaint gazebo and waterfalls to seduce

your senses. When you sit outside you will be romanced by

twinkling lights that make Shangri-La look like a bus stop. It’s a

tropical paradise of epic proportion.

The dinner menu boasts a chilled seafood platter, Grilled Octopus,

Fisherman Cioppino (which is Grilled Lobster Tail, Clams, Mussels,

Shrimp, Fish and spicy tomato fennel broth), Branzino with

Saffron, tomato, olives and black rice, Seared Duck Breast, a Fig

Salad and other favorites.

This historic landmark was built in 1902 for the first Mayor of

Delray Beach, John Sundy. It has retained its historic cherished

roots and old Florida charm, which is why it is a popular wedding

destination. It’s commonplace to see brides and their guests smiling

with joyful anticipation roaming the premises.

There are five different rooms on the property for dining or parties.

Each has its own significant charm and unique assets. There

is the Mediterranean Room that gives you a picturesque view of

glorious gardens. The Star Bar has an outdoor patio nestled in the

garden with Grecian columns and a view of the outdoors. The Fresco

Room has large picture windows, a high wood beam cathedral

ceiling and ethereal painted walls.

The Sundy House is also the perfect place for a private party

or corporate event. It’s tranquil one-acre botanical garden, Guest

rooms, Restaurant, fresh water streams, lighting and foilage make

it everyone’s happy place. It is listed on the National Register of

Historic Places and is just one block from the action and attractions

of Delray Beach.

That is why the Sundy House is everyone’s favorite – whether

you are celebrating a wedding, a special event or just want to wander

into the wilderness of old Florida’s finest treasures.

Is Autism In Dogs

An Epidemic?

In dealing with thousands of clients yearly in our quest to provide

a roadmap of health for your pets, we begin with the philosophy

that both human and pet behaviors, are the sum of

what goes into the body. We know the air contains many toxins

and disruptive chemicals as well as most of the water available. We

constantly speak about the necessity of a species appropriate clean

diet to minimize even more contamination.

As we are seeing more and more health challenges in people over

the last few generations, we find similar trends in canines having many

of the same diseases. Since most of these diseases are not transmittable

between species, we examined the root causes which are mostly

environmental, subsequently leading to deficiency and toxicity.

Our pets do not speak our language which makes diagnostics

very difficult. One of the challenges we have been dealing with

are the behavior and physical issues, from aggression, seizures,

gastrointestinal, shyness, and anxiety. As we move from assessing

and treating only the individual symptoms to evaluating the overall

spectrum, we find a vast similarity on the human side referred to as

Autism-Spectrum Disorders.

Can our canine companions truly be experiencing these Autism-

Spectrum Disorders? Are the rates for pets climbing at the accelerated

pace like those of our children of today? We have spoken

of this for over a decade and recent research confirms that we

were correct. Much of the research has been focused on looking

for a genetic cause or some kind of link. We found a common environmental

link that co-exists between Autism in our children and

in our pets. That link is vaccines. On the human side, it is usually

associated with the MMR, (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.

For pets, the most prevalent vaccine associated with this is Rabies

and often attributed to “Rabies Miasm” which mimics early signs

of rabies itself. Among these behavioral changes, we see aggression

toward humans and other pets, loss of affection, anxiety issues

such as excessive barking and destruction. Many of these changes

model those of Autistic children.

While it may seem a stretch to link these two different vaccines,

the commonality is that both vaccines are the most mandated in

both species. While we can opt out on the plethora of other vaccines

for human and canine schedules, these two are always there and are

usually administered multiple times. In reality, a dog that lives to be

fifteen years old could have fifteen or more vaccines for rabies alone.

We often talk about a person growing up today having a schedule

of over 70 vaccines prior to age 25. For pets; in addition to their

rabies vaccination, canines can have as many as 30 in their first six

months of life with yearly boosters of at least 6 per year. That totals

to over 105 vaccines in a 15-year lifespan.

With this type of assault from unnecessary vaccines, combined

with the hundreds of other toxins such as flea and heartworm medications

and additives in processed foods, we believe that our cute

little puppies and dogs are candidates for Autism. We also believe

that it is our duty as stewards for our pets, to be aware and monitor

the use of these toxins and use consistent natural detoxification to

minimize these health challenges.
