Health + Physical Education
MONTHLY UPDATE
NOVEMBER 2016
Rethinking How We Use Class Time in
Physical Education!
Last month, the 2016-17 cohort of the Physical Education Leadership Academy (PELA) collected data on their use of class
time and tracked student activity levels. Most were surprised to find that students weren’t as active as they thought. In fact, most found
that their students were well below the goal of physical education to engage students in Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity
(MVPA) at least 50% of class time. PELA participants used their data to identify strategies to increase physical activity during class.
As well, they asked themselves, “If an aspect of your lesson doesn’t develop students’ physical literacy, engage students in MVPA or
motivate students to attain or maintain a healthy lifestyle…is it worth doing?” As a result of this inquiry, PELA teachers were able to
identify high leverage strategies to restructure class time including:
Locker Room
• Clear and consistent procedures in place
• Timer/music by teacher to cue students out of
locker room
• High expectation for timely arrival to class
Transitions
• Require students to be active (locomotor skills, etc)
• Keep them short by giving them a clear time expectation
• Provide clear procedures and cues (timer or music)
• Hold students accountable for quick transitions
Roll Call
• Immediately engage students in activity
• Take roll while students are ACTIVE!
Stretching
• Only include if necessary for activity associated with
the daily learning outcomes
• Sport specific/strategic when appropriate
• To work on flexibility, only stretch once students are
warm (During closure!)
Warm-Up
• Start immediately as students arrive to class
• Small-sided games, inclusive tag games or previously
taught lead-up games
• Fitness stations
• Make it fun! This may determine their attitude for the
entire class!
Instruction
• Student learning outcomes for the day are clearly stated
and understood
• Regularly incorporate student-centered learning
• Use short cues and visual aids/informational text
• More student talk…less teacher talk!
Guided Practice
• Keep groups small (2-4 people)
• Keep focus and feedback on clearly stated daily learning
objective
• Enough equipment for every student to participate
Closure
• Keep it short and concise!
• Collect evidence of student achievement of daily learning
outcome
• Make it active! (walk & talk cool down, etc)
Dr. Kim Butler, Physical Education Resource Teacher for Sweetwater Union High School
District (SWUHSD) and physical education teacher at Hilltop High School, recently
received notification that she successfully renewed her certification as Nationally Board
Certified Teacher (NBCT). As a NBCT Dr. Butler is celebrated as an accomplished
educator who is committed to advancing student achievement in physical education.
This comes as no surprise to those who work with her in SWUHSD where she leads the
charge to provide students with standards-based, high activity, quality high school
physical education. In addition, she is a major contributor the Fit 2 Learn, Fit 4 Life
website that is designed to house resources for teachers and administrators to support
quality physical education and continually steps forward as a leader in our discipline. She
is definitely a San Diego County MVP!
MONTHLY UPDATE
NOVEMBER 2016
As our discipline continues to change and evolve, so should the manner in which we engage students with content. A frequent request
from health and physical educators is greater access and exposure to technology that can inform their instruction. However, training
and information to guide the use of technology in physical education is just a click away!
Thepegeek.com is a website that is designed to provide information and training to support physical educators’ use of technology. The
PE Geek features physical education specific apps, podcasts and free webinars. Hundreds of resources are posted to meet a wide
variety of needs on a diverse topics including:
• The iPad in PE
• Motivating PA with Technology
• Google Chrome Apps in PE
• QR Codes & Augmented Reality
• Planning Purposeful Tech Integration
• Help! I lost my gym!
• Top Apps in PE
The PE Geek to the Rescue!
The information featured on thepegeek.com can be used by individual teachers to update their instruction at their own pace, based
on student needs and available technology. It can also be used during department meetings or professional learning time to guide the
direction of an entire department. Check it out!
NOVEMBER 2016
Literacy Strategy of the Month: Create a
Detailed Paragraph About What You Learned
“Closure” of a lesson provides a critical opportunity for students to make meaning of their learning. An easy way to engage students in
meaningful conversation about the daily learning outcome is to give them the opportunity to work with a partner to construct a paragraph
about what they learned. First, ask students to develop a topic sentence that describes what they know or are able to do at the
end of the lesson that they didn’t know or were able to do at the start of class. Then, have them construct three sentences that provide
clear evidence to support their topic sentence. Students can either write down their sentences to turn in or can share their paragraphs
orally with another group.
Divide your class in to groups of four. Have each student design their own
eight-count using their favorite locomotor or nonlocomotor skill. Demonstrate an
example or two. Once all students have developed their eight count, have them
count off 1-4. Ones will teach the other three members of their group their eight
count. Then twos will teach theirs. Groups will then put the first and second eight
counts together. Threes will then teach and the group will practice all three eight
counts together. Finally, fours will teach their eight count and then will add it to the
previous eight-counts to have a complete dance. Turn on music and let students
perform the dance to music. Once they finish all four eight-counts, they start from
the beginning again.
Physical Education Leaders are
MONTHLY UPDATE
NOVEMBER 2016
Ask Students “What Else?”
It’s November. Baseline FITNESSGRAM assessments are complete. Students have set meaningful fitness goals for the year. Now it
is time to ask them, “What else can you do to increase the likelihood that you achieve your goal?” Have each student identify 3-5
additional things they can do that will help them reach their objective. Ask them to identify actions they can do in class, throughout the
school day, at home and in the community that will help them reach at least one of the goals they have set. It is a great way to show
students that just a few small changes can make a big difference!
Participants on Day 2 of the Common Core in Physical
Education. The next offering of the 3-Day will take place on
January 17, February 21, and March 28, 2017. See www.
