Hiring Tuesdays
What does it mean to “Make Good Happen by
becoming a Goodwill Ambassador?” Well, it probably
means something a little different to each of us. For
me, it means doing the best job possible with a positive
attitude and a genuine smile on my face. I believe
that helping others starts with me. It is not someone
else’s job. Sometimes that simply means being a
good role model and showing others the way. Often,
we know what we want to accomplish; we just need
someone to show us how or to give us a chance.
Goodwill has a new way to give San Diegans the opportunity to become a Goodwill ambassador. Every Tuesday
beginning at 9 am, interested individuals are invited to come to a GISD employment center dressed for an
interview and with a printed copy of their application to meet with one of our recruiters. We have the following job
openings: Processor, Salesperson, Truck Driver, Supervisor, Assistant Manager, Shipping Manager and Product
Photographer. Please spread the word.
Chula Vista Groundbreaking
On Thursday, September 29, Goodwill Industries of San Diego broke ground at the site of the new retail location
to be opening in Chula Vista in 2017. The groundbreaking was attended by many Goodwill Ambassadors
involved in the new store's planning, Goodwill Board Members and also individuals from the local community,
including members of law enforcement, the media, the building contractors and other notable local figures.
The new purpose design location will feature a retail store and donation area.
Reducing Waste: Closing the Loop
The California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA)
just hosted its 40th annual conference and trade show.
Since 1974, CRRA has hosted an event where people
from the waste & recycling industry gather to learn,
collaborate, develop, network and help shape the
Zero Waste agenda for California. Each year CRRA
recognizes 14 award winners in various categories.
This year Goodwill industries of San Diego County was
honored to win the Outstanding “Closing the Loop”
Commitment Award. This award is given to a business,
government agency, community-based organization
or school that has implemented an innovative program
that features the procurement of products that reduce waste, have recycled content and/or are safer
alternatives to toxic products. Our Curb Up partnership with Waste Management of North
County and the City of Oceanside caught the attention of CRRA leadership and we were honored with the
award. We will continue to work within our community to minimize waste and bring jobs to San Diegans.
Steve Rose - 28 Years Strong
Steve loves a lot of things about his job at Goodwill: two of
his favorites are tinkering with the computer and running the
washer and dryer in the laundry department. When Steve
started his career at Goodwill 28 years ago, he began as a
janitor. Due to the fact that he loves technology, Steve
became a cashier. He eventually moved into IT as a
computer technician and most recently began his work
in the laundry department. These are all incredible feats
for Steve because he cannot see out of his left eye and
cannot hear. His right eye has some sight but it is quite blurry
because of glaucoma. He communicates with his co-workers
and family by using sign language. In Steve’s free time, he enjoys
working on his home computer – he has memorized the
keyboard in order to navigate the system like a pro. He loves
shopping at Best Buy with his 9 year old son. Steve has been
married for 14 years. He recognizes his wife by the feeling
of her thumb. Steve thinks the best part of his job is that he
has the chance to be on his feet and move around a lot. He
likes to remain active and not spend too much time sitting.
We are blessed to have Steve as part of our Goodwill family.
Goodwill at the Game!
San Diego Padres Night @ Petco Park
On Thursday, September 29, Goodwill Ambassadors enjoyed an evening at Petco Park watching the
Dodgers face the Padres. After two wins against the Dodgers, for the season finale, the Padres couldn’t shake a
loss. Although they were defeated, the evening was a victory for Goodwill. Ambassadors got to enjoy the pre-game
ceremony on the field (the grass is even prettier up close) a moment of fame on the Jumbotron and the opportunity
to share a great time together. Thankfully, at Goodwill, we are blessed by co-workers that are a lot like family.
Kevin Cordle
Mission Driven Ambassador
Wins University of Phoenix Scholarship
“I love being a Goodwill Ambassador precisely because of our Mission.
I am a grateful recipient of that Mission and I love being able to bestow the benefits
of the Mission on others.”
Our Donations Department Manager, Kevin,
recently applied for and won a full-tuition scholarship
with The University of Phoenix: a program that is
exclusive to Goodwill employees. The
scholarship can be used immediately to pursue an
undergraduate or master’s degree from the University
of Phoenix. This program will help recipients expand
their skill set and prepare them to move into upper level
management positions.
“The Goodwill Mission is one of the most
important aspects of my life, to be quite honest. It
is an easy thing to be enthusiastic about,” said
Kevin. “I have seen the results, the ‘return on
investment’, so to speak. To see another human
being enabled to achieve something that they wouldn’t
have been able to achieve without an organization that
espouses such a mission is a reward unto itself.”
Kevin says that the Goodwill mission has
given him a purpose whether he is at work or at home;
whether he is doing mundane or exciting things. At
Goodwill, Kevin has the role of a leader and assists in
the hiring and promotion process. He finds joy in this
process because he has had a direct hand in hiring
folks that were very much in need of work.
He has watched several people in his
department earn promotions during his time with the
organization. He is proud of the fact that some of these
people were facing very harsh realities prior to joining
Goodwill. “I feel incredibly grateful to have been
able to give these folks hope again by giving them
a job, by improving their employability through
training and mentoring, and by continuing to improve
their prospects through promotions,” said Kevin.
Kevin has seen first-hand how being
employed restores the dignity of these folks and how
important it is for them to provide for themselves and
their families. Several have been promoted time
and again because of the mentoring and training
they have received. They have been placed in the
position to ‘pay it forward’ and hire others
who were in the same place of hardship that
they themselves previously were.
“I feel incredibly blessed to work for such an
organization where we, collectively, are able to give
people opportunities and then watch them grow
and develop,” shared Kevin. “My wife and I teach
our children the value of helping and encouraging
others. We strive to impart these valuable
Goodwill life lessons in our family.”
Prior to becoming a Goodwill Ambassador
Kevin served in the Navy and was selected to
attend the Naval Academy (USNA - Annapolis),
graduating with an Engineering Degree. Kevin was
deployed several times on Aircraft Carriers, the last
time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom onboard
USS Constellation in the Arabian (Persian) Gulf.
Iosefa Jr.
April: Big 12 “Safety”
Iosefa prides himself on following
all company and Transportation
Department safety protocols.
Iosefa has great attention to detail,
drives carefully and defensively,
and performs his route duties
with great efficiency. Through his
daily truck inspections he is able
to diagnose mechanical problems
before they become major. He
practices safe lifting at all times,
frequently asking his teammates if
he can assist them with heavy items
so they do not become injured.
Iosefa is committed to teamwork
and working safely.
10 GOODWILL & ME
Alden
May: Big 12 “Teamwork”
Alden knows what it is like to be a
team player. He is the first to offer a
helping hand to both his coworkers
and management. No matter what
he is working on he always finds
time to help others around him.
Alden listens with an open mind
and wants to make sure he can
lighten the load of his coworkers
or help customers. His team says
that his philosophy is “Better to ask
millions of questions than to make
mistakes”. Thank you, Alden, for
your leadership efforts and setting
a great example for your peers in
the Retail Department.
Francisco
June: Proactive
Francisco has always stood out
as proactive ever since he started
working in the Transportation
Department. He is always
generating new ideas on how we
can improve efficiencies within the
department. He works efficiently,
independently, and is always going
above and beyond with helping
new staff and fellow Ambassadors.
He is constantly thinking outside
the box, takes on tasks without
anyone asking, and demonstrates
a positive attitude no matter what
challenges may arise throughout
the day.

Alpine Store
Many in the small community of Alpine remember the old fire station before it became a Goodwill store. It was,
after all, a fire station for nearly 50 years. The back wall of the store used to house a large closet and two
showers. The co-ed bunkroom was located along the east wall of the store. The fire station was built in 1957
by volunteers with donated materials and an $18,000 bond. In the good ole days, fire stations used to have to
fundraise to build or make improvements to their fire stations. Fortunately for Goodwill, the crew outgrew the
station. They moved into a new fire station and we moved in. It’s fun to share a little bit of history and the
reasons why the Alpine store is special.
