GUILDERLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT INC. 

Organized in 1931 

Serves the town of Guilderland from The Prospect Hill Cemetery 

to the Nirvana Indian Restaurant, with parts of Routes 155 

and 146 and Old State Road.

The Guilderland Fire Department has served the district for 84 

years with 36 active members currently serving their community. 

The department maintains four fire apparatus, two command 

vehicles, and one utility vehicle. Fire apparatus includes a 1992 

Salisbury (Engine 27) and a 2002 American LaFrance (Engine 26) 

engine. Both are Class I engines that pump large volumes of water 

and carry firefighting hose and ground ladders. Other apparatus 

includes a 2008 E-One 100 foot aerial ladder platform/pumper 

(Truck 29) and a 2007 Spartan Light Rescue Squad (Squad 23) that 

contains a mobile air bank and the Jaws of Life. 

Our membership includes both men and women, highschool and 

college students and a diverse group of local professionals. Anyone 

16 years or older may join if they live or work in the Guilderland Fire 

District. Ladies Auxiliary is also accepting new members, there is no 

residency requirement. Applications for either may be obtained by 

calling the firehouse at 456-5000 or by email via our contact page.

Cover Story 

On Sept. 22, fourteen volunteer firefighting crews 

rushed to the rescue as, late that night, Sally and Tom 

Ketchum’s home was engulfed in flames. 

The firefighters were hampered as they battled the 

blaze because there was no ready access to water; 

they had to set up a system for shuttling water from 

trucks to the scene. A huge fireball leapt from the old 

three-story farmhouse at 3935 Western Turnpike and, 

although the back of the house was a loss, the front 

was salvaged. No one was injured. 

Enterprise photographer Michael Koff, who is being 

honored as one of the Firefighters of the Year, was offduty 

for the Westmere Fire Department and so could 

capture the drama for our newspaper. 

It was one of three Tuesday fires within a month 

for the Altamont Fire Department, which in October 

turned its annual open house into a fundraiser for the 

burned-out families. Over $5,000 was raised. Altamont’s 

chief, Paul Miller, said he was gratified by the 

“outpouring of support from the community.” 

We, in turn, are grateful for the selfless volunteers 

who put their lives on the line to save others. Those 

who staff the ambulance squads and those who fight 

fires spend countless hours training to be ready for 

emergencies. 

Each year, we at The Enterprise salute them by picturing 

the leaders of the departments and squads and 

listing the members. Look for your neighbors in this 

special edition, and tell them, “Thank you.”

in the Town of Guilderland. Our district includes Crossgates Mall, Hamilton 

Square, Westmere Plaza and several smaller shopping centers, 

and over 2,900 homes, several apartment complexes with a total of

Organized May 22, 1893, 

Oldest volunteer fire department in Albany County 

Serves the village of Altamont and part of the town of Guilderland.

ALTAMONT FIRE DEPARTMENT 


The department serves the Village of Altamont and part of the Town 

of Guilderland. Each year the department participates in a number of 

community related events. These include the Halloween parade, the 

Altamont Police Department Safety Awareness Day, the PTA villagewide 

garage sale and the Altamont Memorial Day Parade. Fire Safety 

programs were provided to the Altamont Pre-School and Altamont 

Elementary School children. The department hosts the Annual Fireman’s 

Ball in the spring of each year, as well as comedy night in the 

fall. The department observes a moment of silence every Sept. 11th 

with a memorial service. The department participates in a Santa Stroll 

every December. Members also assist the auxiliary’s annual Back to 

School Brooks’ Barbecue fund-raiser every September. 

The auxiliary participates in the annual Halloween Party, the villagewide 

garage sale, the Altamont Memorial Day Parade and decorating 

for the Annual Fireman’s Ball. The women host the annual Brooks 

Barbecue each September.

The Town of Rensselaerville Volunteer Ambulance, Inc serves 

the three fire districts within the Town of Rensselaerville. We are 

volunteers handling as many calls as possible with assistance from 

the Albany County Sheriff’s Department for coverage when we are 

short on manpower. We currently have six trained EMT’s or higher 

as well as eight drivers, and are always looking for HELP! We have 

been in operation since 1973 and our quarters are located at the 

intersection of County Routes 352 and 357. We answer on average 

160 calls annually. 

Our vehicle is a 2009 Ford Road Rescue ambulance. Our meetings 

are the third Wednesday of each month, starting with one hour of 

training at 7:00 p.m. and a business meeting at 8:00 p.m. Whenever 

possible we are available for mutual aid to neighboring towns, if 

manpower permits.

Knox. The Squad is certified at the EMT-D (emergency

check finger stick blood sugars.

The Rensselaerville Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. was incorporated 

in 1939. Our fire district is 27 square miles including the village and 

hamlet of Rensselaerville. Please follow us on Facebook for updates

Like our neighboring volunteer fire departments, we are in need of 

new members. There is a position for everyone. For more information 

about joining, please stop by at one of our meetings. Battalion 

meetings are the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. and 

company meetings are the last Wednesday at 7:30 pm or stop by at 

drills which are held the first two Mondays at 7:00 p.m.

TRI-VILLAGE VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY INC. 

The Tri-Village Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. was formed in 1933 to 

cover the hamlets of Preston Hollow, Potter Hollow and Cooksburg. 

The firehouse is located on Rt. 145 in Preston Hollow. The Company 

serves the lower southwest portion of the Town of Rensselaerville in 

Albany County. 

The Company annually sponsors two boot drives in the district and 

distributes an annual update letter to our residents.

Founded March, 1946 

Serves the hamlet of Medusa in the town of Rensselaerville. 

Fundraising events include our annual Medusa Fest, Turkey Supper, 

Election Day Buffet, plus our famous All-You-Can-Eat Breakfasts on the 

third Saturday of each month from September until April, along with 

our Annual Horseshoe Competition on the first Saturday of August. Our 

Auxiliary is a part of our regular membership.

BERNE VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY 


Covers the Town of Berne and a portion of the Town of Knox.

Community Events: In the spring and fall company members participate in a highway clean up on 

Helderberg Trail. In May, firefighters place American flags on the graves of departed members, and the 

fire company participates in many local Memorial Day Parades. During Fire Prevention Week in October, 

the firefighters teach lessons on fire safety to the elementary students at Berne-Knox-Westerlo. 

In addition to fire safety, the children learn about firefighting equipment and have an opportunity 

to meet the firefighters. Students are given fire prevention coloring books filled with safety ideas. In 

August, the firefighters also visit the Connections Program at B-K-W. In May and October, the fire company 

hosts two Roast Beef Dinners. 

In case of a lengthy power outage in the town, residents may come to the Berne Fire Station for 

water, food, and showers.

Serving the Village of Voorheesville in the Town of New Scotland.

Fund Raising Events: 

Annual Calendar Drive, Breakfast with Santa, Election Day Auxiliary 

Bake Sale, car washes, blood drive. Proceeds from donations and 

fund raising events are used to benefit many community functions. 

Some of the local organizations assisted in the past are: Voorheesville 

High School Dollars for Scholars, New Scotland Pop Warner football, 

Voorheesville High School Yearbook, Voorheesville High School 

Drama Club, and Hilltowns Children’s Christmas Drive, the American 

Cancer Society, Kiwanis baseball, Voorheesville Area Ambulance, 

Voorheesville American Legion Post 1493, St. Peter’s Hospice, and 

the New Scotland Food Pantry. There were two collections to send 

care packages to troops stationed in war zones. In addition, proceeds 

are used to benefit the FASNY Fireman’s Home in Hudson, New York, 

the October Fire Prevention Week, as well as many other firematic 

associations. The Auxiliary assists the firemen with many of these 

fund-raisers and donates the proceeds from their bake sale to the 

Albany County Burn Fund. 

Community Service Activities: 

The department supports the Adopt-a-Highway program with its 

semi-annual cleanup of Route 85A through the Village; conducts 

firehouse tours for the nursery and kindergarten classes in support of 

fire safety education; hosts three golf leagues. The Department also 

offers a Junior Firefighter program for Voorheesville teens aged 16 & 

17 who desire to learn about the fire service while fulfilling their own 

school Community Service obligations.

level, and funded by a revenuerecovery 

program. The squad

provides blood pressure checks 

for the Hilltown Senior Citizens.
