2 SAVE EVERY NATION TODAY

FOREWORD
The Bible is full of strategies. Spanning from Creation
to battles in Joshua’s day, from the books of Samuel
and Kings to Nehemiah’s wall, the greatest of these
strategies, one which is assuredly divine, still remains
to be The Great Commission.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have
commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the
end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:19-20)
The sole purpose of this strategy is to make disciples.
Regardless of who you are and where you come from, all
disciples of Christ have this same calling to make disciples of
all nations.
The question remains, how? How can we put into practice
the principles that the 1 st century church so single-mindedly
upheld? One thing for sure, as the church of the 21 st century, we
must not deviate from the God-given strategy of discipleship.
In this issue of SENT, you will see how Tabernacle of Joy (TJ)
puts this strategy into practice. Our ministry life cycle is a fourquadrant
growth model used to perpetuate discipleship:
Seek and Save, Develop and Disciple, Equip and Deploy,
Mentor and Multiply. Through this cycle, followers become
disciples and disciples, leaders.
Working hand-in-hand with a God-given strategy is an effective
system. It is where principles and procedures work together in
an organized method to produce an expected outcome. Does
the growth system in your church make disciples?
Lastly, let’s not forget that which keeps our strategy and system
well-oiled - prayer. Without God, we labour in vain. Only with
warfare praying, travail and intercession will we produce fruit
that will last.
Hungry to be a part of The Great Commission? Look into the
pages of this SENT issue. We pray our testimonies will ignite
in you the faith to believe that revival and making disciples of
all nations is possible!
THE
THRESHING
FLOOR
BISHOP F. JOE ELLIS

An earnest search of the
scriptures will reveal that
what Jesus taught about
discipleship is very different
than what is required for discipleship
today. In my quest to understand this
amazing subject, there are four things
that I concluded very quickly into my
study:
#1. What Jesus taught and
required of His disciples is
radically different from how
discipleship is practiced today.
#2. Discipleship precedes
leadership.
#3. Most leadership problems that
arise in a local church are actually
discipleship problems.
#4. The 21 st century church
doesn’t need more Christians - it
desperately needs disciples.
This brief article is not exhaustive.
However, it is an attempt to encourage
today’s leaders to take a fresh look at the
importance of discipleship at the local
level, and why it’s so critical to how
effective the church will be in world
evangelism. It’s imperative that today’s
decision makers who lead the church
understand discipleship from a scriptural
perspective and not settle for anything
less. One’ s ability to gather and make
disciples is the true measurement of a
successful apostolic leader. One thing
is certain. True disciples are committed
followers. If no one is following,
disciples aren’t being developed.
A look at what Jesus taught His disciples
is very revealing:
“If any man will come after me, let him
deny himself, and take up his cross, and
follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)
“If any man come to me, and hate not
(love less) his father, and mother, and
wife, and children, and brethren, and
sisters, yea, and his own life also, he
cannot be my disciple.”(Luke 14:26)
“So likewise, whosoever he be of you
that forsaketh not all that he hath, he
cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33)
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which
believed on him, If ye continue in my
word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”
(John 8:31)
“Herein is my Father glorified, that
ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my
disciples.” (John 15:8)
Jesus wasn’t trying to keep people out
of heaven. He simply understood what
it would take to evangelize a hostile
world where traditions and cultures are
so strong that they will kill over it. Jesus
knew it would require more than an
outward confession of an inward faith.
He also knew that only those who were
truly committed disciples would have
the persevering qualities it would take
to change their world.
Strong, growing, apostolic churches are
not made up of members who try to
see how close to the world they can live
and still be saved. Just the opposite is
true. Because of this, making disciples
at the local church level must never be
devalued or minimized. It should be
our first priority.
THE JESUS MODEL OF
DISCIPLE-MAKING
By today’s church growth standards,
Jesus was a failure, even though He
attracted crowds of thousands. After
preaching one message about the blood
and body, His audience shrank from
five thousand to twelve. Self-centered,
uncommitted crowds are always quick
to change churches when their only
purpose for attending is to receive.
However, those who have already
denied themselves and forsook all, have
nowhere to go (see John 6:48-69).
By today’s standards, Jesus’ approach
to discipleship would be considered
obnoxious and radical. Some might
even argue cultish; at the very minimum,
unusual. Please note the dialogue Jesus
had with a rich, young man in Mark
10:17-22, “What must I do to inherit
eternal life” the young man asked. Jesus
first responded with reference to Moses’
teachings. The man replied, “These I’ve
kept since I was a boy.” Because Jesus
loved him, he opened a door for him to
become His disciple and said unto him,
“One thing thou lackest: go thy way,
sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to
the poor, and thou shalt have treasure
in heaven: and come, take up the cross,
and follow me”.
Jesus made no attempt to lower the
standard for discipleship, regardless of
how wealthy he was. The young man
loved the opportunity, but wanted no
part of the threshing floor Jesus told
him would be necessary.
TRUE
DISCIPLESHIP
MOVES PEOPLE
TO DECISIONS OF
CHANGE.
And he was sad at that saying, and
went away grieved: for he had great
possessions. (Mark 10:22). There are
several things in Jesus’ dialogue with
this young man to take note of: Jesus
didn’t change the altar call because this
young man was unwilling to do what
was necessary to qualify for discipleship.
Neither did Jesus try to convince him
to change his mind. As much as he
loved Him, Jesus allowed him to walk
away. While that seems hard, Jesus
would not compromise the importance
of discipleship.
Remember, Jesus our example was the
one who humbled Himself and became
obedient unto death, even the death of
the cross (see Philippians 2:8). The cost
of discipleship was real in Jesus’ day. It
should be just as real to us today. Jesus
never apologized or made excuses to
justify what was required. The young
ruler’s assets were his idol and Jesus
knew it. Pastors, don’t be fooled. When
people are unwilling to give up their
SENT
7

idols (regardless of what they are),
like the rich young man, they will
eventually walk away. The young man
seemed willing to follow Jesus until he
realized the cost. He was not willing to
pay the price of discipleship. He was
comfortable with a religion that was
convenient as long as it did not affect
his own personal comfort.
If the church ever removes sacrifice
and self-denial from discipleship, you
have no discipleship. If you have no
discipleship, you have no church! Jesus
made making disciples His first priority.
He did it in such a way that people
were required to make a decision.
Jesus set high standards of discipline
for His disciples, and would not accept
anything less than a total commitment
to those disciplines. If someone was
unwilling to live up to them, Jesus was
totally willing to let them walk away
and make no attempt to talk them out
of it. In the 21 st century, this is difficult
to understand and viewed as radical.
Regardless, this was Jesus’ model of
discipleship!
True discipleship moves people to
decisions of change - always! Why? No
one just exists in the kingdom of God!
Jesus understood this and accepted
nothing less than total commitment.
As much as every pastor wants to
keep everyone that starts attending the
church, no one does. Knowing you
won’t keep every convert however does
not excuse us from giving everyone
our very best effort and opportunity to
become a disciple.
The same is true with leaders. Every
leader will not stay loyal, but we don’t
stop training and trusting because
someone becomes disloyal. Disciplemaking
should be the focus of every
ministry in the church even when you
know you won’t keep them all.
WORLD HARVEST AND
THE THRESHING FLOOR
In the 1 st century, they gathered sheaves.
Sheaves were taken to what is called
a “threshing floor”. It took time and
effort to transition the harvest that was
gathered into a useable grain that could
feed the world.
On the threshing floor an ox walked on
the sheaves breaking the grain from the
stalk. The broken stalks were swept aside.
What survived the breaking process was
tossed up while a large hand-fan stirred
the air. The fan blew the “fluff” away.
What the fan did not blow away, fell to
the threshing floor. Most of what now
lay on the threshing floor was grain, not
fodder or fluff (see Matthew 3:11-12).
EVERY
APOSTOLIC
CHURCH
MUST HAVE
A THRESHING
PROCESS IF IT
IS GOING TO
BECOME BREAD
TO FEED THIS
WORLD.
The remainder, which was only a very
small part of the original ingathering,
was shaken through a sieve to filter
away the tiny particles of chaff. What
remained however, was available to
either plant for future harvests, or to be
put to use at the dinner table. If there
is no threshing process, the gathered
crop would be of little to no use. Not
good for bread; and not good for
reproduction.
Every apostolic church must have
a threshing process if it is going to
become bread to feed this world. Luke
14 records three qualifying statements
made by Jesus regarding discipleship.
Jesus intentionally eliminated the stalks
and chaff from the wheat. He had
3,000 attendees, but after a process, He
only had twelve disciples. Breaking,
shaking and sifting separated what was
usable, from the gathered. Make no
mistake about it. Until newly acquired
people go through the threshing floor
you never know what you really have.
This is a challenge! I have realized, the
discipleship process does take longer
than it did in years past. That however,
doesn’t remove its importance. The
temptation today is to measure quality
by the attendance numbers who come
to worship on Sunday. In an article
written by author Carlton Coon titled
“Disciple-Making - You Won’t Keep
Them All” it states that “The attendance
assessment is a weak measurement
to gauge church health. It is flawed
because it does not ask, ‘How many
of these people are committed?’” He
goes on to say, “Commitment is better
measured by the calendar and checkbook.
People who willingly give of
their time and finance!”
Pastors must teach Bible principles that
oppose the flesh. You will get what
you preach and teach. You will also
get what you don’t preach. When true
discipleship principles are taught, they
cause separation to take place because
they require decisions to be made.
True discipleship is counter-cultural. It
opposes the current world values and
norms. New people quickly see that.
Often, however they feel they will be
the exception to the rule. True disciplemaking
gives people hope and a reason
to change their sinful behaviors.
Every church needs a disciple-making
(threshing floor) system in place. The
breaking will take place a little bit at a
time. However, regardless of how slow
or fast, it must happen if the person
is going to be saved. A proven, tested,
commitment to discipleship must not
be optional for anyone who desires to
be a member of the church.
This is especially true for those used in
ministry and leadership. Involvement is
an important element of the discipleship
process. But there are some areas that
require a higher level of commitment,
and only time and testing proves that.
People need time to show their level of
commitment. •
8 SAVE EVERY NATION TODAY

TAKE-HOME PRINCIPLES
#1. KNOW WHAT WHEAT LOOKS
LIKE. Distinguish between chaff
and the grain; and deciding what
you want to keep should be
obvious. By the way – you won’t
keep them both. If you want
to accommodate everything in
culture, the real grain won’t stay.
#2. HAVE A BIBLE-BASED
PROCESS. Let the process
separate people. In this process,
elevate God’s word to its place
of authority.
#3. HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS
OF PEOPLE. Jesus did. Teach
to those expectations and don’t
compromise those ideals for
leaders or teachers.
#4. BE DOCTRINAL. Some say,
“To be relevant we cannot be
doctrinal.” Wrong! Right practice is
always derived from right doctrine.
It is impossible to be practical
without being doctrinal. Doctrine is
the foundation for the practical.
#5. PATIENTLY ELIMINATE REAL
ISSUES. For example, deceitfulness
of riches, cares of life and lust for
other things.
#6. LOSE PEOPLE FOR THE
RIGHT REASON. Never because
they were not given proper care.
#7. HAVE A PROCESS. Have a
process to turn good grain into
something useful and usable.
UNLOCKING THE BIBLE
TESTIMONIES
“And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to
house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour
with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” Acts 2:46-47
Since its inception, Tabernacle of Joy’s (TJ) main
evangelistic thrust has always been personal Bible
studies. Evolved from the North American format
of home bible study sessions, these are now often
taught in small groups in any convenient location around
Singapore. In these small groups, opportunity exists for
clarification, questions, and feedback, allowing for maximum
participation of every individual.
Unlocking the Bible (UTB) is a series of ten lessons designed
to give its students a structured, chronological foundation of
the Word. UTB is an integral component of TJ - a teaching,
evangelistic ministry that forms the backbone and vanguard
of the church. In Singapore this year, more than 40 UTBs
have been taught and currently 34 UTBs are still in session.
The teachers and connectors of the UTB ministry are
equipped and deployed believers who have been through the
discipleship cycle.
UTB has been translated to Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa
Melayu and is now being used in Sabah (Malaysia) and
Jakarta (Indonesia) as a tool to seek and save.
02
Roslina (UTB Teacher, Sabah)
“UTB lessons build a desire for the teacher
and student to study more about the Bible.
The lessons start off with sin and how it
leads to separation between God and man.
It teaches that the gospel is the solution
and helps the student understand how to
respond to the gospel.”
01
Ethan Woon (UTB Student, Singapore)
“I can learn about Jesus! The lesson that
I like is, the shepherd have a lot of sheep
and the shepherd look for the lost sheep…
I want to go heaven.”
03
Suk Clement (UTB Teacher, Sabah)
“The content and approach is wellorganised
and easy to use. It works well in
my mixed group of church and non-church
ladies.”
14 SAVE EVERY NATION TODAY

05
Victor Wong (UTB Student, Jakarta)
“I was a Buddhist before I knew Christ. I
found UTB very helpful for my spiritual
growth. It gave me a basic understanding
of the Bible and how to live for the Lord.”
04
Cami Thiew (UTB Student, Singapore)
“After UTB, many of my doubts and
questions were answered. I gained a
deeper understanding of who God is and
who I am in Him. I also enjoyed bonding
and praying together with my UTB group.”
06
Ruban Thomas (UTB Student, Singapore)
“I experienced the presence of God again
after a long season of drought in my
life. Understanding the Oneness of God
removed any communication barriers. Now
I know exactly who I am communicating with
in prayer. I personally view UTB teachers as
the elite force in the army of God.”
07
Annie Quach Thi Tuyet Anh
(UTB Student, Singapore)
“The lessons were very convincing and
reflected God’s wisdom, grace and love.
It was a life changing journey. I have come
to know my God at a more personal level,
with my love for Him increasing day after
day.”
A MIDSUMMER'S
MISSION TRIP
In April 2016, a joint mission team
from Tabernacle of Joy (Singapore)
and Apostolic Centre (Mattoon,
Illinois) travelled to Laoag,
Philippines. The team’s purpose? To
minister to a group of 900 apostolic
youths at the annual United Pentecostal
Church (UPC) summer youth camp
for the Northwestern Luzon region.
Pastor Cory Sanders, Sister Charity
Sanders and Brother Samuel Zhu
taught them practical steps to equip
them to be soulwinners in their schools
and communities. The mission team
included members who were seemingly
young; one member was only 14 years
old and another had only been a born
again believer for two months.
Yet God powerfully used their
testimonies to encourage and strengthen
the youths present. This team was
evidence that with Christ, anything is
possible. If He could use this team of
young people for His kingdom, He
could use the youths in the Philippines.
And use them God did: 166 youths
were filled with the Holy Ghost and 35
were baptised in the name of Jesus.
Through this trip, the team connected
to the mission and vision of the church
and saw themselves fulfilling it. It served
to open their eyes to the bigger picture
of what God has called His church to
do and the part they could play in it.
BECOMING A DISCIPLE
Phoebe Tan, 19, was among those on
the team embarking on her first official
mission trip. Read on to learn how
missions helped her in her journey of
being a disciple.
Hi, Phoebe! What was the
experience on the mission trip
like?
Phoebe: It was just so memorable.
On a mission trip, you move out of the
routine of normal church. You go to a
different atmosphere where the people
are so hungry. It made me realise this is
something I want to do more of, instead
of just living life and going to school. If
we could be part of a bigger plan than
our own, I wouldn’t mind being sold
out for that. It showed me there are
things in life which are more important
and more fulfilling than mere successes
that society tells us to chase.
What do you feel changed for
you since coming back from the
mission trip?
Phoebe: Boldness – that’s what I
remember most from the trip. Like
before, I would have trouble when God
would ask me to pray for people. But
on the mission field, God gives you the
boldness to just walk over, not think
so much, and the words just start to
come out of your mouth. If you just
submit yourself and don’t overthink
everything, He will work through you.
Back here in Singapore, I feel more
comfortable praying for other people
now; I don’t think about it so much
anymore. It creates a good habit and
you can just allow God to use you to
minister to others. In the process, you
get ministered to as well. That’s what
I learned: the boldness that will come
from giving yourself to God. •
HI, HYPHEN
In April 2015, Hyphen Singapore was launched. Single young
adults between the age of 18-30 were called to be part of the
Hyphen Generation, a movement that has taken North America
by storm. Ignited in the heart of Abigail Lee, a series of divine
events saw her dream and burden become a reality.
The Hyphen Generation, aged
18-30 are single young adults
in the prime of their life. They
are a force to be reckoned with.
While the world battles aggressively for
the potential of these lives, the Hyphen
generation awakes to the God-given
destiny and call of the last days.
They belong to a community of likeminded
people who inspire, love and
build up their fellow brethren. They
exist to connect to their world and in
the process create positive change. They
believe that this generation is hungry
for an encounter and an experience
with God that will change their life and
world! They are those with one hand
clutching tightly to Truth and the other,
fervently grasping for the lost.
HYPHEN IN SINGAPORE
With a burning passion for this
generation, Hyphen Singapore began its
quest to develop and disciple the young
adults of today. Beginning with small
groups, leaders were developed to care
for their group members. The impact
was undeniable. In one short year,
Hyphen Singapore saw health return to
the body. Members who were on the
fringes began to come more regularly
as people found a safe place where they
were nurtured and cared for. We saw 28
new faces in under 10 months and as
a whole, the total number of Hyphens
grew by 20%. Beginning with seven
small groups and 21 leaders, we have
expanded to nine new groups with 29
leaders out of which six leaders have
moved on to establish new groups for
Young Married Couples.
WHAT HYPHEN DID FOR ME
Jasmine Shalini, 25, a member of
Hyphen, shared what the Hyphen
experience did for her, “Before
Hyphen came in 2015, I prayed a prayer
specifically to reignite a fire for God
and to make more friends as I didn’t
have many church friends to support
and encourage me. God answered my
prayer with Hyphen! I came out of
my comfort zone, made new friends
and my walk with God was realigned.
I am grateful to my Hyphen leaders
for doing life with me, allowing me to
be real with them, correcting me and
shaping my character to be right with
God. ”
New convert Wong Jian Zhi, 21, came
to Tabernacle of Joy (TJ) when Hyphen
first started. He was impacted by the
care group that reached out to him,
“When I first came to TJ, they gave
me the feeling of a family. I was invited
to join the Hyphens for activities after
service. The fellowship helped me to
open up to them and fit in.” •
READY TO
BUILD AGAIN
In December 2014, a special group of delegates from The
Philippines joined Tabernacle of Joy (TJ) at their annual
camp and refreshing point, Deep Calleth Deep (DCD). The
connection was immediate.
WHEN WE FIRST
SET FOOT AT
THE PRE-DCD
SERVICE, WE FELT
RIGHT AT HOME.
AND SO, THE
REST IS HISTORY.
WE HAVE BEEN
COMING TO TJ
EVER SINCE. WE
HAVE FOUND
OUR FAMILY.
SISTER JEANNY PONS
At a time of desperate need,
a Filipino couple, Brother
Leopoldo Servidad (Brother
Pol for short) and Sister
Jeanny Pons who were experiencing
a dark period in their lives saw a
glimmer of hope. The church they had
grown up in began departing away
from foundational apostolic truths.
Discouraged, they turned to apostolic
preachers online to find refuge and
comfort. The sermons they heard
brought much strength.
Sister Jeanny fondly recalled, “In those
dark months, our refuge had always
been our God through the preachings
my husband had sent me.” She noticed
that Reverend Lee Stoneking’s online
sermons often referred to a congregation
in Singapore. The TJ logo caught her
eye and she conducted a Google search.
She found the TJ website and came to
know DCD 2014 was still open for
registration. Taking a step of faith, she
signed up for DCD 2014.
A JOURNEY LIKE NO OTHER
Finding a new family and a new home
in TJ has set them on a new journey to
train believers into disciples. Now with
a call of God on their lives, a group of
believers who would stand for truth
and a network of support, Brother Pol
and Sister Jeanny were ready to build
again. The Apostolics for Jesus Christ
(AFJC) in the city of Makati in Manila
began with twenty-four members who
had been in the church for twelve to
twenty-five years. Despite this, Sister
Jeanny assessed that their level of
spiritual maturity was still lacking. “It
helped us to see the hard truth: most
of the members are just believers and
not disciples yet,” Sister Jeanny said.
Learning from TJ, AFJC adopted Next
Steps into their congregation and began
implementing a system for the teaching
of God’s word.
THE TRUE VALUE OF TRUTH
Beginning with the Learn stage of
Next Steps, Sister Jeanny was surprised
that these lessons resonated with the
saints. Through a series called A Place
For You, the saints of AFJC began
learning the true value of the church,
the protection that leadership brings to
the flock and a deeper understanding of
God’s government.
Sister Jeanny also reported that the
Identity series in Next Steps has done
an overhaul in a mother and son
relationship. AFJC member Ronand
and his mother’s relationship began to
improve tremendously. God began to
heal their broken hearts and reconciled
their relationship. They not only speak
fondly of each other now, but are
together serving the Lord together. In
the words of Sister Jeanny, "Everything
just falls into place when we are aligned
to God's Word.” •
I was against my Mom
But when I started taking
his June, a team of eleven from
Tabernacle of Joy (TJ) went
to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to
be a part of their ‘Healing and
Restoration’ crusade. It was a three
day crusade and with a total of 844
in attendance. The team comprised of
both mature and younger saints, put
together for the common purpose of
seeing God’s will be done in the crusade.
The team’s main role was to provide
additional support to our Malaysian
brethren by praying for visitors to
receive the Holy Ghost.
EQUIPPED FOR EVERY
GOOD WORK
Before their trip, each of the team
members were assigned courses on
The Apostolic Academy (TAA) which
included Bishop Steve Willoughby’s
training videos on Spiritual Midwifery
and a pre-mission trip briefing by
Bishop Allan Shalm.
TAA is an online platform that allows
the pastoral team to assign saints courses
that would equip and furnish their walk
with God. Leaders could choose and
create modules from a large database
of materials that would meet their
student’s needs. Consequently, students
are able to access training wherever and
whenever, increasing the leader’s reach
in equipping the saints.
The courses assigned to the team were
aimed at giving them practical tips
that would supplement their prior
experiences they had praying for others
to receive the Holy Ghost.
Crusade member Mark Yong, 23, shared
that the courses has helped prepare
him both mentally and spiritually. He
recalled, “Listening to someone with
a wealth of experience in the mission
field can help a great deal as to what
we can do to prepare, what we could
expect and how to respond in different
situations.”
TJ saint Karen Joseph, 53, agreed that
TAA has empowered her with the
necessary tools for outreach and with
a more accurate knowledge on what to
do in the mission field.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
During the crusade, the team was able
to practice and apply what they had
learnt. Another TJ saint Jolene Wee,
21, recalled an incident when a little
Burmese boy who was being prayed for,
received what Bishop Steve Willoughby
would call “The Back Rub” by one lady.
Equipped with the knowledge through
Bishop Steve Willoughby’s training
materials that this was a distracting
action, Jolene stepped forward to gently
remove the lady’s hands from the little
boy’s back.
Chua Gek Tiang, 31, also shared, “I
remembered that there was a lady that
I prayed for during the crusade, but
she wasn't receiving the Holy Spirit.
I was with her for a while. Her eyes
were closed and hands were raised but
there wasn't anything going on. Then
I remembered learning from TAA to
direct the person not to focus on getting
the Holy Ghost, but focus on how
good God is, so I started to pray with
her, thanking God for everything He
has done. While I was doing that, tears
started to brim in her eyes. Within 30
seconds, she received the Holy Spirit.”
At the end of three days, 64 people
received the Holy Ghost and four were
water baptized.
THE HARVEST IS PLENTIFUL
Bishop Steve Willoughby wrote in his
book, Entering the Restricted Zone:
“We can do nothing without Him, and
He chooses to do nothing without us.”
In these closing moments of time, God
is calling and seeking for labourers and
earth partners who would be willing to
prepare themselves to be willing vessels
in His Kingdom. May we respond like
Prophet Isaiah did, “Lord, here I am.
Send me.” •
WHAT IS THE
APOSTOLIC ACADEMY?
The Apostolic Academy is a platform that provides online
Christian leadership training. Living in the 21 st century, life
makes many demands on us. This platform is designed for
leaders to upgrade themselves while being on the field.
While this platform has been set up for self-learning, it also
has within itself, a system for coaching, accountability and
tracking to take place. Pastors and leaders can design their
own curriculums according to their needs and track each
individual’s progress. Self-designed tests and assessments
can also be created to measurement the individual’s progress.
Our goal is to help church leaders all over the world get
involved in a training program or design one that will suit
their needs. Church leadership in the 21 st Century requires
men and women who are relevant to their day and age. The
Apostolic Academy has all the resources available, all you
have to do is pick and choose the specific diet you need.
REAL
COLORS
Relationships are the bedrock of every community. Real
Colors strengthens that foundation by giving us insight into
the personality, characteristics and temperament of ourselves
and the people around us. With 16 certified facilitators, 6
empowered helpers, 130 Singapore participants and 485
overseas participants so far, Real Colors has been a blessing
to the churches in the region this year.
A
church’s “Equip and Deploy”
process includes recognizing,
equipping and releasing
individuals to specialize
in their God-given shape to serve
the Body of Christ. One outcome is
mobilizing people into ministry and
missions in various forms. Real Colors
is one of these equipping points which
is self-sustaining. More and more
participants are receiving and then
themselves sharing this tool which helps
individuals recognize their shape, as
well as the personalities and interaction
styles of others around them.
A RISING REVOLUTION
Tabernacle of Joy’s (TJ) first contact
with Real Colors was in 2009.
Conducted by Sister Marlo Spidle, Real
Colors revolutionised Tabernacle of Joy
in many ways. You know something has
made a lasting impact when it changes
the way you think, perceive and
communicate. It was six years later that
TJ decided to invest in Real Colors.
Using the four-color spectrum of Real
Colors, participants are able to identify
the colors that represent them most and
recognise the different characteristics
of other colors. Participants leave the
workshop seeing the world from a new
perspective, be it their own or from
another.
Within the headquarters of TJ in
September 2015, sixteen homegrown
Real Colors facilitators were trained
and officially certified by the National
Curriculum and Training Institute
of USA. Eager to put their skills into
practice, TJ began conducting their
very own Real Colors workshops in
October 2015 for leaders, ministry
teams, families and youth.
EQUIPPED TO FACILITATE
Tan Sihui, was a little apprehensive
about facilitating her first workshop,
but after seeing the results, it has
inspired her to improve and be better.
“Guests that came were comfortable
enough to stand in front and present
about their own color and ask questions
about another color. I did not expect
that. I would do it again, as it is about
32 SAVE EVERY NATION TODAY

experiencing and teaching more so I
can be better at facilitating.”
Peter James, shared about what helped
him as a facilitator, “The team you work
with really plays a part in preparing
you for this workshop. Everyone has a
part to play and that also reveals to the
audience that you practice what you
are teaching; that you can communicate
and work together with a team for a
common goal and purpose.” Cynthia
Ow reflected on what helped her
prepare for this role, “The support and
confidence we get from Pastor and
other trainers!”
DEPLOYED BEYOND
SINGAPORE
Uncontainable to just Singapore, in
June, July and August of 2016, TJ
brought the Real Colors experience
to Sabah, Jakarta and the Philippines.
This was a unique experience in that
the facilitators, were first participants
in Singapore. Having seen it done for
them, these participants were equipped
and deployed alongside certified
facilitators.
Preparing for the session in Sabah,
Cheryl Toy admits she was a little
sceptical. The crowd was mostly from
the villages, much larger in size and
spoke limited English. But as she put
into practice what she had learnt,
the faces that lit up with new found
understanding were all she needed to
say “I will do it again!”
Her husband, Kelvin Toy, a certified
Real Colors facilitator, attributed the
success to past small group experiences
that helped him to work as a team and
improvise as the situation called for it. A
month later, this couple was deployed
again to Jakarta, more ready than ever.
Together with the Toys, Bryan
and Sharon Ong facilitated the 50
participants at Jakarta’s Family Camp.
Working with a translator was a new
experience for the team but this did
not hinder the team from overcoming.
In the words of Sharon Ong, “This
family camp did not only strengthen
the participants’ vertical relationship
with God but it also strengthened
their horizontal relationship with their
spouses, kids and fellow brothers and
sisters.”
CHURCHES IMPACTED
In the Philippines, Sister Leah Lee
equipped a group of pastors and leaders
to pass on what they had learnt in Real
Colors.
These leaders were eager to put
into practice what they had learnt;
evaluating their ministry teams,
allocating manpower to their strengths
and valuing different opinions as a gift
to the body of Christ. A participant in
Sister Leah’s session, Pastor Leopoldo
Servidad said: “On the whole, church
communication with leaders and
members improved drastically.”
With this, Real Colors has become an
important component of TJ’s “Equip
and Deploy” strategy; recognizing,
equipping and releasing individuals to
specialize in their God-given shape to
serve the body of Christ. •
A CALL
TO WAR
“He teacheth my hands to war” Psalm 18:34
Truthfully, we cannot make
disciples if we do not get
involved in spiritual warfare.
Yet if you ask most Christians,
many may not understand what spiritual
warfare is or know what we can do to
be effective in it. Knowing who God is,
who we are as the church, the weapons
we have at our disposal, how to fight
effectively – these are crucial necessities
if we want to be disciples of Christ,
going forth to make disciples as He has
called us to do.
A Call to War is known by many as
a spiritual warfare training seminar.
What began as a Mannafest meeting
in Singapore in March 2011 divinely
developed into what is now known as
A Call to War. For the past five years, it
has taken place annually at the Antioch,
Bishop Chester Wright’s home church
in Annapolis, Maryland. This year in
March, A Call to War was held in
Singapore. It is not a church service; it
is a meeting for change.
A LASTING FOUNDATION
For those who heard the words spoken
during the seminar, it changed the way
we pray. It changed the way we view
prayer. It launched us into a season
of fruitfulness. Why? Because we can
have the most perfect systems in place
but systems without prayer will not
produce fruit that lasts. Anything we
do that is not built on a foundation
of true apostolic prayer is worthless.
Somewhere along the way, we were
told that prayer is when we petition
God about everything we do not like in
life. And when God does not fix things
for us, we give up on prayer because
it does not seem to work. Prayer was
never meant to be needs-based. It was
always meant to be about the Kingdom.
THE LOST CAN’T DECIDE
Prayer is the single most significant
spiritual thing we can do. It is a spiritual
weapon. We can have church without
praying but we can’t have God without
praying. The church of God must learn
to walk with God or else the lost stand
no chance of salvation. Prayer is what
34 SAVE EVERY NATION TODAY

SYSTEMS
WITHOUT
PRAYER
WILL NOT
PRODUCE
FRUIT THAT
LASTS.
the process of discipleship requires from start
to end, from new convert to enduring saint.
“Let the sighing of the prisoner come before
thee; according to the greatness of thy power
preserve thou those that are appointed to die.”
(Psalm 79:11)
Reverend T.W. Barnes once wrote: “The lost
can’t even decide whether they want to be
saved until someone prays the blindness off of
them.” The Bible says: “If our gospel be hid,
it is hid to them that are lost” (2 Corinthians
4:3).
HE DOES NOTHING WITHOUT US
The attitude of a disciple is thus: I have received
hence I will give to those who are in need.
We are called to stand in the gap between life
and death. We have been commissioned to
save those who are spiritually blind. Very few
people are willingly spiritually blind! They do
not have the ability to free themselves from
blindness. Prayer is the privilege granted to the
finite to communicate and participate with the
infinite God. You will never truly get involved
with people to see them saved if you don’t get
involved in prayer for their salvation.
What is born of flesh is flesh. If God does not
plant them, we cannot pastor them. We can do
nothing without God and God chooses not to
do anything without us. He limited Himself to
redeem souls through partnership with man.
If we do not accomplish our purpose as the
church, we miss the reason why we are here.
Yet we can rest in the promise that the blessing
of God is inherently part of the direction
of God. He will give us what we need to
accomplish what He has called us to do.
CALLED TO WAR
A Call to War opened our understanding that
we cannot engage in spiritual warfare unless we
are spiritual. To be spiritual is two-fold: to be
born again of the Spirit and to be governed by
the Spirit. We cannot win the conflict without
knowing two things: who God is and who we
are. Without this knowledge, it is impossible to
be consistently victorious in spiritual warfare.
As during the seminar, in life there will be
times of warfare and travail. In the natural
world, warfare is not a continuous intense
firefight of direct confrontation. There are
many periods of waiting, preparation and
strategic maneuvering. Our greatest weapon
is persistent prevailing prayer. True ministry is
hearing the voice of God, allowing ourselves
to be a conduit and speaking the word to
others as led by the Spirit.
Before the seminar ended, Bishop Chester
Wright cautioned us: what will keep us from
being fruitful when we leave this place and go
home? It will be the unwillingness to give it all
to God and let Him be in control.
MORE THAN A MEETING
A Call to War was more than just another
meeting to be attended and then forgotten. God
spoke, souls were saved, lives were changed – it
was the right message at exactly the right time,
every word divinely orchestrated by God. If
the church will only continue in practice what
we have learnt, we will position ourselves to be
used by God mightily in the end time revival
for our region. The truth that we learned at
the meeting was not only for Tabernacle of Joy
but for every nation represented: Bangladesh,
China, Indonesia, Malaysia (Sabah and
Sarawak) and The Philippines.
The responsibility does not disappear when
the lights turn off and the doors of the church
building close. There must be enduring
change from the deadness of unfruitful manmade
works to ministry which is authored and
sustained by the only true and living God.
It is not enough to sit in a meeting, to attend
church and leave unchanged. No, we must
realise we are in spiritual warfare at every
point of our lives. Dear friends, it is a onesided
battle if we would only surrender to the
power and purpose of the Almighty God. This
is a call to war - what will your answer be? •
TRANSIENT
MISSIONARIES
What do you do when you have a large congregation of
transient migrants who will leave the country when their work
contract is over? You send them home to multiply and start
churches, of course.
WE PLAN TO
RETURN TO THE
PHILIPPINES
TO START A
WORK IN A FEW
YEARS’ TIME. WE
WILL FOLLOW
THE PATTERN
OF WHAT WE
LEARNED IN
SINGAPORE.
FLOR ARROJO
GROUP SERVANT & FORMER HEAD
USHER, FJF (SINGAPORE)
The Filipino Joy Fellowship
(FJF) has a current membership
of more than 1500, with most
falling under the category of
overseas foreign workers (OFW) -
largely female domestic helpers. To date,
more than 3000 of these OFWs have
returned to the Philippines. With their
return, new works have sprouted in
areas where there were none; existing
churches have been strengthened.
Starting a new work is not an easy
undertaking. Pastor Dodjie Cargando
and Sister Nancy Cargando have
mentored many returning OFWsturned-home-missionaries
who
continue to reproduce the FJF
spiritual DNA in their congregations.
Approximately 15 FJF home
missionaries have become licensed
ministers in the Philippines.
From saint to pastora, what is the
process like? This phase of Mentor and
Multiply calls for a strategy of growth
and reproduction. For FJF, this takes
the form of accountability, systems and
good old-fashioned hard work.
AN EARLY HEADSTART
The mentoring begins in Singapore.
Pastor Dodjie and Sister Nancy mentor
the district servants, who in turn
mentor the zone servants, who then
care for and mentor the group servants.
Pastor Dodjie and Sister Nancy meet
the district servants each week to touch
base, work through issues, encourage
and instruct. By their example, Pastor
Dodjie and Sister Nancy show the
district leaders how to mentor others,
thus reproducing their spiritual DNA.
Each district learns to operate as a mini
church. FJF is intentionally structured
such that the different districts have
a different responsibility each week.
These responsibilities are carefully
chosen so that in a month, each district
would have experienced all the practical
components of running a church.
ON-THE-JOB MENTORING
Pastor Dodjie and Sister Nancy
intentionally mentor disciples through
regular mission trips to the Philippines.
The mission team typically consists of
FJF home missionaries and committed
saints from Singapore, usually Purpose
Institute (PI) students. They observe
the pattern of outreach so that they
can reproduce it elsewhere in the
Philippines.
The mentoring process does not end
when they leave Singapore. When a
work started by an FJF home missionary
has grown to a considerable size, Pastor
Dodjie and Sister Nancy visit it with a
mission team. Pastor Dodjie and Sister
Nancy observe how the church plant
is functioning and provide spiritual
guidance, strategic advice and feedback
on existing systems.
In addition, Pastor Dodjie and Sister
Nancy connect yearly with the FJF
A SPECIAL REUNION
This year, Pastor Timothy Lee and
Sister Leah Lee from Tabernacle of Joy
(TJ) also met up with some of these
home missionaries after a conference
in Manila. Together with Pastor Dodjie
and Sister Nancy, the four pastors spent
time encouraging the home missionaries
and were being encouraged by their
stories and testimonies in return.
“Meeting and seeing our leaders and
friends in the ministry was a great
blessing and strength! It was like a
reunion because we are in different
provinces and don’t get to see each
other often. Pastor Dodjie, Sister
Nancy, Pastor Timothy and Sister Leah
shared with us about leadership and
church structure. They gave us advice
on growing the church spiritually
and numerically, in a systematic way.
Some of my friends traveled eleven
hours to be at the meeting and it was
worthwhile! We are all doing better
after the meeting,” said Bing Gamutan,
Pastora, Tabernacle of Joy Fellowship in
San Isidro, The Philippines.
SEASONED BY TIME
These home missionaries started out
as ates (older sisters) to many in FJF
and TJ. They were leaders in worship,
service, evangelism and example. Their
relationship with Jesus has seen them
through their changing roles as they
move through the phases in the ministry
cycle of life: domestic helper, group
servant, ministry leader, PI student, zone
servant, district servant, pastora. This
phase cannot be reached without the
peace and depth of a walk with God -
a walk that has weathered desert storms,
travelled to mountain tops and emerged
from deathly shadows. The mentoring
and multiplying process can only take
place when we stay in the cycle and
remain in the body of Christ. •
THE COACHING PROCESS
Disciples go through this process a few times to build their
confidence, stretch their faith and develop their skills.
1 2 3
PLAN
As they step into the
teaching ministry,
disciples are not
spoon-fed with
curriculum. Rather,
they are given the
tools to research
and develop the
curriculum alongside
the mentor. The
disciples are pushed
to dig into the Word.
DELIVER
The mentor offers
tips and strategies
for conducting the
lessons and the
disciple is invited to
teach parts of the
curriculum alongside
the mentor.
EVALUATE
This is the most crucial
part of the process.
Honest, constructive
feedback is given to
help the disciple grow
into a better teacher.
In this raw, pruning
process, the disciple
hears the heartbeat
of the mentor and
the spiritual DNA is
passed on.
Mentoring can be found
throughout the Bible.
Elisha caught Elijah’s
mantle, Jesus ate with His
disciples, Paul wrote to Timothy and
Titus. How do we take the principles
of mentoring in the Bible and translate
them into modern-day methods?
In Tabernacle of Joy (TJ), the
commitment to growth takes the
form of systems and structures for
discipleship. One of the vehicles that
provide a structure for mentoring and
multiplying is Next Steps - this time
the focus is not on the student, but on
the development of the teacher. This is
how the teaching ministry grows.
We start with spiritually mature disciples;
this phase in the ministry life cycle is
not for young converts. Rather it is for
ones who have decided to answer the
call despite the cost. They are spiritually
minded. They are team players and
soul winners. These are people who
have knowledge of the Word, and are
able to understand it, apply it and bear
fruit. In this next phase of the ministry
cycle of life, the disciple goes through
40 SAVE EVERY NATION TODAY

MENTORING
& MULTIPLYING
IN THE TEACHING MINISTRY
the intentional process of mentoring.
This process is time-consuming and
requires the mentor to focus on one
or two disciples at a time. In TJ, this
process typically takes a year or more.
The result: a student turned teacher, a
disciple turned mentor - duplication of
spiritual DNA in the teaching ministry.
A teacher typically starts off learning
how to teach in an Unlocking The
Bible (UTB) class, from a connector,
to trainee teacher, then co-teacher and
into a full-fledged teacher. Once their
ministry is proven seasoned, skilled and
fruitful, they become supervisors to
train new teachers while others go on
to teach Next Steps, overseeing a larger
class of 12-25 students as compared to
one or two students in a UTB.
Currently in Singapore, UTB teachers
have almost doubled in the span of a
year. Beginning with a strength of 56,
there are now 106 teachers. In the area
of Next Steps, 15 disciples have been
mentored in the Next Steps teaching
ministry. As a result of this growth,
Pastor Timothy Lee and Brother Samuel
Zhu were freed up to multiply and
train others. This year, they travelled to
Indonesia to introduce and begin this
process in Jakarta. As more ministers are
multiplied in the church, the leaders
of TJ are given the mobility to reach
out and impact the region around
Singapore.
Apart from the teaching ministry,
mentoring is also crucial in the
shepherding aspect of the church.
Hyphen has also become a platform for
this to take place. Small group leaders
spend one-on-one time with Pastor
Timothy and Sister Leah Lee as they
receive coaching in caring for their
small group members. The care that
they have received from Pastor Timothy
and Sister Leah, they in turn replicate
this with their small groups. Specialised
training is done via TAA, where specific
courses are assigned to leaders and
online forums are created for discussion
and sharing. Weekly, group leaders are
accountable to the Pastors about their
own spiritual growth and that of their
members.
Mentoring is done intentionally and
narrowly focused for the specific
purpose of duplicating spiritual DNA.
The results: increase in leaders, a greater
reach and a deeper impact in the
church and community. This is not the
end of the cycle but the beginning of
a new one where the mentee becomes
the mentor, disciples beget disciples and
leaders beget leaders.•
HOW TO PLAN A
MATTHEW PARTY
Matthew Parties got it’s name when Matthew, the tax
collector, invited Jesus to his house in the company of
non-believers. With the simple act of feasting, walls
came down and conversations happened. Some left
with their lives completely changed. Here’s how you
can plan a modern day Matthew Party.
STEP #1: INVITATIONS
Decide who you’re going to invite and plan a date and
time that will be suitable for your guests.
• If your friends are parents with children, make sure
that the party is not on a Sunday night as kids have
school the next day.
• Public holidays are great days for parties.
• Make sure you invite guests 2 to 3 weeks before
the event, and follow up with reminders in the
week of the event.
• Think about what you would like to achieve with
the party. Is it for families with children? Or to
connect over shared hobbies and activities?
• Do ensure there is a good mix of personalities.
Good group dynamics will ease the awkwardness
of meeting for the first time.
STEP #3: VENUE
To encourage open conversation, opt for several smaller
arrangements as opposed to a large centerpiece.
• Cushions and benches create lounge areas.
• Make a playlist with light and happy music, and
set the volume to a light hum. You do not want
overpowering music.
• Make the place smell great with a scented candle
or diffuser.
STEP #5: HAVE FUN
Mingle with guests and spend time having
conversations with your guest.
• Introduce your friends to each other.
• If you are there as a connector, be proactive and
make yourself friendly. You could be the friend
they were meant to meet!
STEP #2: PLAN YOUR MENU
The food is often the highlight of any event so taking
the time to plan and prepare great food can help
create a memorable experience for guests.
• Have a pot-luck party where everyone brings a dish.
That will take the work-load off you.
• Do ask your guests for the food item they are
bringing and make a list to ensure a good spread of
food.
• Have snacks and nibblers ready before the main
course. Snacks are great as icebreakers.
STEP #4: NAME TAGS & ICE BREAKER GAMES
Get folks to put a name tag on if there are many who
are meeting for the first time. Play ice breaker games
to get to know each other. The best games are those
that create laughs.
STEP #6: AFTER-PARTY
The party does not end when your guests leave.
• Write a thank you text or call them to thank them for
coming.
• Take the opportunity to ask how they enjoyed
themselves and find out if there was anyone they had
hit it off with. This will give you a hint for the next
activity or party you could invite them to.
