<strong>Stratford</strong>’s <strong>Christmas</strong> lights will be turned on at a show-stopping switch-on ceremony on<br />
Thursday 24th November from 4.30pm. Come and join the fireworks, Father <strong>Christmas</strong> and<br />
the first of our fabulous <strong>Christmas</strong> Markets on Bridge Street as the festive season gets<br />
underway.<br />
Visit the <strong>Christmas</strong> Market on Bridge Street continues on Thursday 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd<br />
December with stalls offering gifts and festive food, visits from Father <strong>Christmas</strong> and<br />
live music.<br />
Take advantage of free parking every Thursday from 4pm at all <strong>Stratford</strong> District Council<br />
Pay & Display car parks until Thursday 15th December.<br />

A TALE OF LOVE! SHAKESPEARE’S BIRTHPLACE RECREATED IN<br />
GINGERBREAD<br />
One of <strong>Stratford</strong>’s own culinary kings has created a Shakespeare themed<br />
edible labour of love for <strong>Christmas</strong>. Phil Bailey, Head Chef at The Falcon<br />
Hotel, has painstakingly built a replica of Shakespeare’s Birthplace out of<br />
gingerbread. Can you smell if from there?<br />
Trained at <strong>Stratford</strong> College, Phil was Head Chef at both The Belfry and<br />
Billesley Manor before returning to <strong>Stratford</strong> to The Falcon where his remit is<br />
to develop the restaurant. He said, “At 16 I was classically trained in pastry<br />
by a French chef but it’s been a while since I’ve tackled gingerbread. I’m<br />
hugely competitive with myself and a stickler for detail; so it became a<br />
labour of love.”<br />
Meticulous research by Phil included sourcing architectural plans and<br />
photographing Shakespeare’s Birthplace from all angles. It took 36 hours of<br />
experimenting and hard graft, to recreate the tiniest details of the building,<br />
from historic beams to leaded windows replicated in intricate icing;<br />
then festive details were added including a snow-covered roof, snowman,<br />
presents and Father <strong>Christmas</strong>.<br />
“The hardest bit was the construction, but I’m really pleased with the end<br />
result” he said. “I loved adding the finishing touches of sugar-spun trees and<br />
Father <strong>Christmas</strong> stuck in the chimney.”<br />
