Unfortunately for Gemma, mid-way through a very difficult manoeuvre in the final battle round for first and second place she clipped her hose during a technical movement, badly injuring her knee. As a result, a disappointed Gemma was unable to continue but still managed to hold second place position. “My best friend and teammate Kristen Smoyer took first place, but although she won the title of World Champ it was bittersweet, as obviously this was not the outcome either of us had envisioned,” says Gemma. Only 10 women from around the world qualify for this prestigious competition with its stringent requirements. Gemma flew back from Florida to Auckland last month (October) where she began a series of knee surgeries, to be followed by some serious rehab and recuperating back in her home town, Queenstown. She’s already itching to get back on her board. “Competing at this extreme international level is totally different to operator-assisted recreational flyboarding,” says Gemma. “Depending on the power of the jetski supporting the flyboarder, we can reach heights of 18 to 20-metres.” She’s survived many a close call, but that doesn’t deter this gutsy Kiwi thrill-seeking queen. The most dangerous manoeuvre is a trick called, ‘Thread The Needle’. “I’ve had a number of near misses, including falling onto the back of my neck while practising triple back flips, but its something you have to come to terms with when pushing the limits,” she says. The 30-year-old’s professional movie stunt career and international flyboarding prowess constantly have her living on the edge. For 10 years Gemma’s been stuntwoman on various film jobs, including The Hobbit, Yogi Bear, Pete’s Dragon, and most recently on the set of History Channel’s TV series, Vikings. She’s taken on a number of violent battle scenes, car stunt driving and even fire safety when flames are leaping high. Just six months after taking up the new craze of flyboarding, which she learned from little brother Beau, of Queenstown Flyboarding, Gemma cleaned up at the World Champs, Dubai in 2015. In June this year she won the first ever European Flyboarding Championships, and in September was flying to first place at the World Championships yet Social media site ‘NowThis’ featured a piece on her mindboggling manoeuvres recently, which, at last count, had netted 8 million views. Gemma recently helped choreograph a stunning night-time extravaganza for the Goombay Festival in the Bahamas, where she and her fellow Florida-based Powerfly Team members performed. “We wore waterproof LED suits and had laser lights flashing behind us, while we performed tricks to music, so it was pretty spectacular,” says Gemma. “We looked like aliens flying around in the air all lit up at night.” Having her second world championship title snatched from under her in Florida recently was obviously not the outcome she’d hoped for, but in her true courageous style, Gemma’s taking it on the chin. “Certain things happen in life and you look back later and think, that was a lot of bad stuff, but it led to something good. I’m looking forward to the good stuff. This is just a little detour.” She’s hoping to be back on her board, fit and ready to take on the world championships again next year, and get back into her beloved stunt work. From there she’s hoping for the all-American dream – breaking into the fiercely-competitive, but lucrative Hollywood stunt scene. 3 I still can’t believe how incredibly quick this year has almost flown by. I feel like it was just yesterday we were sitting at our desks celebrating the end of 2015 with a few Christmas drinks. I am once again training for the Queenstown Half Marathon and, once again, with injury! I hope there are a few others out there in my boat, I’m determine to get under the 2 hour mark this time, despite being injured again. Its all about pushing through the pain. The inspiration and feeling of accomplishment is all so worth it in the end! I was on such a high last year after completing it and celebrating with friends and family. I'd love to introduce our newest writer to The Flyer, Georgia Todd. Georgia is the latest addition to our ever growing team of amazing people who help bring this local magazine to life! She will be doing a few different things for our Flyer but predominantly writing a brutally honest column on motherhood.
