People were invited to offload any private secrets or problems
they had been carrying, and submit them anonymously in
specially-made post boxes. These were left in cafes, libraries,
and other public spaces around the Queenstown Lakes District,
and as far afield at Invercargill and Auckland. Lynda rallied
some of New Zealand’s best artists, who have interpreted this
“raw human truth and emotion” on canvas. “Similar things
have been done overseas, but as far as I’m aware they haven’t
been interpreted in art form,” she says. “It’s an opportunity
for people to release that monkey off their back – whatever
they’ve been carrying - anonymously and safely.”
The hand-written notes will also be entwined into street-art,
poster-style billboards and hung in between the paintings.
She’s been overwhelmed with the response. “It’s been
unbelievable, and really powerful, and I’m so grateful to people
for submitting,” says Lynda. “I believe this type of exercise is
really important for people, to help them let go and move
forward and discover their inner potential,” says Lynda. “We’re
not designed to carry burdens, so we wanted to encourage
people to peel back those layers.”
The quirky concept fits perfectly with The Ivy Box’s innovative,
funky vibe, and Lynda’s hoping the region’s secrets will deliver
a powerful message. Everyone is welcome at the November
18 opening in the Park Street gallery from 5.30pm until 9pm,
and the exhibition runs for two months.
