HEDI SLIMANE by Jennifer Costanzo | fashion columnist Hedi Slimane was born July 5, 1968 in Paris, France. Born to an Italian mother, who was a seamstress and a Tunisian father, he was surrounded by creativity at a young age. At the age of eleven, Slimane discovered his first true love, photography. When he received his first camera and learned black and white darkroom printing. Hedi began sewing his own clothes at the age of sixteen, without the idea of fashion as a career in mind. He remained in Paris for some time, studying art history at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. Fashion design was never his first career choice, as he finished school and continued working on his photography he wanted to pursue journalism. However, the tides changed for Slimane and soon after his studies he completed an apprenticeship at a men’s design house. In the early 1990’s, Hedi was assistant to fashion consultant Jean- Jacques Picart. Quickly after this job, Pierre Berge (business partner of Yves Saint Laurent) installed Slimane as director of men’s ready-to-wear. As he continually displayed his creative ability at YSL, he became artistic director for the Parisian fashion house. However, in early 2000, Slimane decided to leave YSL after a five-year career and accepted the position of creative director for menswear at Christian Dior. FASHION NICHE.STYLE 47
