Eric Himel’s
STYLISH LIFE
A
new year means an opportunity for a new you and
what better place to start than with your closet.
Organizing one’s closet and purging is never as fun as
the actual shopping, but it’s the basis for having a great
wardrobe, knowing how to dress and always looking
your best. My mantra for having the perfectly rated
closet? It needs to fulfill the following three criteria:
BY: ERIC HIMEL | CELEBRITY STYLIST
EVERYTHING IN YOUR CLOSET SHOULD:
1. FIT YOU
2. LOOK GOOD ON YOU
3. MAKE YOU FEEL AMAZING
Start with organization. You should never have
anything on your closet floor, for a couple of reasons -
that is where the dust collects and it is hard to see and
get to things down yonder. If you live in a climate with
seasons, rotate your closets twice a year between Spring/
Summer and Fall/Winter. If you don’t have an extra
closet, invest in plastic, wooden or linen boxes with lids
that you can store easily under your bed. This will make
it easier to not have to dig through seasonal options that
don’t fit the actual season you are in!
Ladies love to keep shoe boxes from their prized
Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo buys as a badge
of honour. I know how amazing it feels to be able to buy
a pair of really nice shoes but you’re not merchandising
a store - you are organizing a closet. If you don’t have
glass front cabinets for your shoes, they should be kept
in uniform boxes that are airtight. My favourite are
the linen boxes from the Container Store with clear
fronts that open by simply pulling down a tab, so you
can see what you have and easily take your shoes in
and out without having to bring the boxes down. They
stack nicely and the linen material is a step up from a
plastic box. Group your shoes by what you wear the
most - daytime/work shoes in the middle, workout shoes
underneath and fancy shoes on top.
ERIC DEVELOPED HIS SIGNATURE CLOSET PURGE OVER THE PAST TWENTY YEARS
AND NOW YOU CAN DO IT AT HOME!
ERIC HIMEL
is a widely known celebrity stylist, fashion expert and media personality. Raised in Toronto and
Dallas, Himel moved to New York City where he attended Parson’s School of Design and trained
under Project Runway’s Tim Gunn. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and began his
styling career, expanding his business across the US and Canada. Himel’s roster of celebrity
clientele has included Jenny McCarthy, Giuliana Rancic, Pete Wentz, Gabby Douglas and more, and
Eric’s work has been featured in nearly every major women’s lifestyle magazine in the US. He’s
best known for his signature Closet Purge and has recently began leveraging the online
landscape, offering Virtual Styling Sessions.
22
WINTER ISSUE 2016
That top shelf in your closet that you never know what to
do with can come in handy for suitcases, hats, bags, etc.
All you need is a simple wooden step stool.
Now the purging part. Be realistic about the things in
your closet. When is the last time you wore it? Is the
garment age appropriate? Does it show off your best
assets? Does it really fit? Make three piles and try to be
as objective as possible. As fun as it may seem to invite
a friend, it should just be you and a full-length mirror
(and possible a glass of Chardonnay). Don’t be tempted
to invite your girlfriends into the mix.
Pile #1: This is easy peasy, you wear these items, they fit,
you feel great - end of story.
Pile #2: You like the items but have never worn them.
Why They probably don’t fit properly. Very few people
have ‘off the rack’ bodies and most clothes require some
form of tailoring to present the best you. Think about
sleeves that hit at the right place, blazers and dresses that
accent your waist, and dresses and skirts that are neither
too long nor too short for the best leg proportion.
Pile #3: Haven’t worn it, doesn’t fit you (and never will
with tailoring) or you ‘just never have felt good in it’
(don’t overthink this - you’ll just know). Donate it to a
charity or a friend of your choice.
While you are purging, keep a list of fill-ins - items that
you are obviously missing that will bring outfits together
or compliment a top or bottom to complete a look -
for example a great pair of black pants, a pencil skirt,
underpinnings and don’t forget accessories.
Then get ready for the fun part - shopping!
GETTING DRESSED SHOULD BE EASY
AND ALWAYS THE PRE-CURSOR TO
SOMETHING BETTER!
• Have good lighting in your closet - you can’t see what you can’t see!
• Ditch the wire hangers and invest in nice wooden ones - all the same colour.
• Separate seasons.
• Keep things off your floors - especially dust balls!
• Always factor in a good tailor when budgeting for your wardrobe.
• Don’t always default to black just because you think it ‘goes with everything’.
INGRID
BERGMAN
1915-1982
S
wedish star, Ingrid Bergman was born in
Stockholm, Sweden in 1915. With the passing
of both of her parents when she was 12, she moved in
with her uncle. Bergman found a passion for acting
once she had finished her formal schooling and had
her first unaccredited role at 17 while working on
set at a movie studio. The launch into her on-screen
stardom started after graduation from the Swedish
Royal Theatre. Her first big break into American films
was a leading role in the English remake of Swedish
Intermezzo (1939). American Producer, David O.
Selznick had her sign a contract, to appear in the remake
of the original and she received international attention.
The Nordic beauty was in demand in Hollywood,
but she was content at home in Sweden with her
husband at the time Petter Lindström and daughter,
Pia. In realization of her future career in the
Hollywood film industry, Bergman, her husband
and daughter reluctantly relocated to California and
Bergman began her infamous pursuit into films.
Bergman was easily loveable on and off-screen. Her
natural beauty and style with no need of makeup was
unlike any other actress at the time; her face radiated
with vitality and health. Most actresses of any stature
were transported in limousines and had professional
beauty teams, but Bergman drove herself and disliked
wearing makeup – she was a Hollywood star clearly
not from Hollywood and people respected and
admired her. She was relatable and her determination
and talent in the industry allowed her to dispute
contracts and negotiate for proper pay with directors.
Bergman acted in five different languages including
Swedish, English, German, French and Italian.
28
WINTER ISSUE 2016
By 1946 Bergman was the top drawing female actress
in American Film. Over the span of her acting
career, Bergman received three Academy Awards,
two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, a
BAFTA Award, Tony Award for Best Actress and
the title “Sweden’s illustrious gift to Hollywood”.
Her most notable films include Intermezzo (1939),
starring alongside Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca
(1942), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), Gaslight
(1944), Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound (1945)
and Notorious (1946), Joan of Arc (1948) Roberto
Rossellini’s Stromboli (1950) and Anastasia (1956).
Bergman fell in love with Stromboli Director, Roberto
Rossellini during filming and left husband Petter
Lindström. With Rossellini, Bergman had twins,
Isabella and Isotta. Bergman was involved in numerous
short affairs throughout her marriage and this came into
the spotlight when Bergman and Rossellini decided to
divorce, and yet Bergman was pregnant. Dubbed the
“anti-star” Bergman shrugged off tabloids and did not
keep her life private unlike other Hollywood stars at the
time. Scandals began to fade and her career resurrected.
Bergman starred in her last and greatest big screen
production in Autumn Sonata (1978), speaking
Swedish for the entire dialogue. Many feel this was
the stand-out performance of Bergman’s career.
She died in London from breast cancer on her 67th
birthday. Ingrid Bergman’s craft and desire for the film
industry is immortalized through her unique acting
style, finesse and timeless beauty continues to capitvate
us on the silver screen.
NYX BRONZER –
MATTE MEDIUM
#WHATSINMYBAG
Having been in the beauty business for over
10 years now, I have come to know a thing
or two about beauty hacks. We all have
those days when we rush out the door with little to
no time to spare for our beauty regime. In this issue
of NICHE magazine, I am sharing my top ten beauty
hacks! With these tips and a few of these items in
your makeup bag, you’ll look fabulous no matter
what the situation! Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
1. PUT YOUR MASCARA ON WHILE
LOOKING DOWN INTO A COMPACT.
This will help you from getting mascara smudges on the
top of your eye lids. Looking downwards into a compact
gives you the perfect angle to see your lashes on your
eyes properly.
GUERLAIN BRUSH -
MÉTÉORITES POWDER BRUSH
2. APPLY LIP STAIN UNDER YOUR
LIPSTICK FOR AN ALL-DAY, TOUCH
UP FREE WEAR
No need to worry if you still have lip colour on. With a
great stain, your lip colour will stay from AM to PM.
3. HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MASCARA
AND EYELINER RUNNING?
Swipe translucent powder on top of your concealer to
lock eye makeup in place all day. If makeup under your
eyes has not been set with powder, it will run and crease.
4. ONLY APPLY PRIMER AND
FOUNDATION WHERE YOU NEED IT.
No need for all-over application if you are short on
time or your skin doesn’t need it. Apply foundation and
primer to the areas that need it like under eyes, around
the nose, the centre of your forehead and chin. It saves
product and lets your skin breathe.
5. USE BRONZER AS AN EYESHADOW
Applying a bit of warmth in the crease of your eyes
creates an instant pick-me-up. Simply use a domed brush
and apply bronzer in the hollows of your eyes, rocking
back and forth in crease.
6. OUT OF YOUR FAVOURITE EYE
MAKEUP REMOVER? LOOK NO
FURTHER THAN YOUR KITCHEN.
Coconut oil is a total gem at taking off every last trace of
makeup. Dampen skin, warm up some organic, coldpressed
coconut oil in your hands and massage it into
face and eyes. Sweep away makeup with a facecloth.
PHYTO HAIR SPRAY –
BOTANICAL FINISHING
7. WANT BIGGER LIPS BUT NOT
READY FOR BOTOX? NO PROBLEM!
Simply pick up a nude lip liner and lightly trace your lips
on the outskirts of your natural lip line ever so subtly. In
an instant, once your lipstick is applied you will notice
your lips look twice the size!
8. RAN OUT OF YOUR FAVOURITE
BROW GEL TO SET UNRULY HAIRS?
Grab a clean, unused toothbrush and spray some
hairspray to the bristles. Comb the toothbrush through
your brows and voila! They will stay all day!
9. LOOKING TO ADD COLOUR TO
YOUR CHEEKS BUT FORGOT YOUR
BLUSH AT HOME?
Use a pink or red lipstick and lightly dab a little on to the
apples of your cheeks! Blend in circular motions until all
the edges are smoothed out.
10. SKIN FEELING A BIT DRY
LOOKING BUT NO HIGHLIGHTER IN
SIGHT?
Add a bit of clear Chapstick or EOS to your cheekbones
for an instant dew.
pairings and a level of fashion comfort that is
often too predictable. Not anymore.
Stylist Jonzu Jones and photographer
Nusrat M teamed up to take this perennial
classic to another place. What might, at first
glance, seem like a safe wardrobe palette, is
reinvented with interpretive fashion pieces
from rising star designers, complemented by
cutting edge hair and a visibly cool twist on
the nude face.
HEDI
SLIMANE
by Jennifer Costanzo | fashion columnist
Hedi Slimane was born July 5, 1968 in Paris, France. Born to an Italian mother, who was
a seamstress and a Tunisian father, he was surrounded by creativity at a young age. At
the age of eleven, Slimane discovered his first true love, photography. When he received
his first camera and learned black and white darkroom printing. Hedi began sewing his own clothes
at the age of sixteen, without the idea of fashion as a career in mind. He remained in Paris for some
time, studying art history at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. Fashion design was never his first
career choice, as he finished school and continued working on his photography he
wanted to pursue journalism. However, the tides changed for Slimane and soon
after his studies he completed an apprenticeship at a men’s design house.
In the early 1990’s, Hedi was assistant to fashion consultant Jean-
Jacques Picart. Quickly after this job, Pierre Berge (business partner
of Yves Saint Laurent) installed Slimane as director of men’s
ready-to-wear. As he continually displayed his creative ability
at YSL, he became artistic director for the Parisian fashion
house. However, in early 2000, Slimane decided to leave
YSL after a five-year career and accepted the position
of creative director for menswear at Christian Dior.
Hedi Slimane was able to really express his artistic style at Dior
Homme. As he continued working at Dior Homme, he was also
able to reach out with his imaginative designs to fellow artists and
musicians. Hedi, having always been inspired by music found
himself designing for major musicians, like David Bowie, Franz
Ferdinand and Mick Jagger, to name a few. Throughout his years with
Dior Homme he became known for redefining the male silhouette.
After working for the fashion house for six years he decided not to
renew his contract and returned to his first love of photography.
During this period of self-reflection and renewed interest in the art
scene, Slimane decided to relocate to Los Angeles where he began
a photography blog, the Hedi Slimane Diary and worked with
galleries and local artists. In March 2012, Slimane was asked to
come back to YSL and replaced Stefano Pilati as creative director.
He was highly criticized for his work after the move, specifically for
injecting an aesthetic influenced by musical and youth subcultures
into YSL’s legacy. However, Hedi did not see it that way, he wanted
to bring something new and extraordinary to a brand that had
essentially lost its allure after the death of Yves Saint Laurent.
When Slimane was asked to rejoin the brand, he recognized
the issues the famed Parisian house was having and decided
he was not only going to revamp the design aesthetic but the
business as a whole. Slimane reintroduced couture to YSL;
however, it was a new kind of couture. With this new couture
came the rebuilding of an atelier for the brand, on the left bank
of Paris in a historical hotel with magnificent architecture.
Fashion somehow,
for me,
is purely and
happily irrational.
Slimane wanted to paint a whole picture, to fully transform the
fashion house, while keeping its traditions. Hedi also focused
on the production details to get the right level of quality and
branding. Slimane could not leave his love of photography and
had it become a part of the brand, using it to draw a narrative
and photographing advertisement campaign. His final change
was to the name, changing the ready-to-wear line from Yves
Saint Laurent, to simply Saint Laurent. This was an idea that
was not only important to Slimane but was an ode to Yves Saint
Laurent. Both designers wanted to keep the couture house
and ready-to-wear collection separate. Slimane had injected
his creativity to a brand that may have been dying in the
fashion industry and brought it to a new level. He commanded
the attention of the global fashion industry in doing so and
continues to design for the brand today.
…on the topic of DESIGNING A COLLECTION
“There is that balance I want to find
between the contemporary world, my
studio in Los Angeles and Paris, the church,
pure tradition. The fashion is about both
influences, it’s the moment juxtaposed with
tradition. That’s the house.”
The ankle-height Chelsea boot has
stormed the runway for several seasons
now, and its time to shine as the goto
boot for colder months is behind us.
As designers continue pulling inspiration from
the swinging sixties and seventies, there has been
a noticeable shift in the evolution of boot trends.
We are officially heading into the first phase
of a longstanding relationship with the
tall, gorgeous, leather boot, and lucky for
us, it has landed in a rainbow of colours.
Nervous? Fear not, for we too will evolve with this
trend. Tuck them under longer hemlines, feature
them on top of pants, or send them up a bare leg to
highlight a short dress. Planning an outfit has never
been more sophisticated or satisfying.
WINTER ISSUE 2016
CULINARYtravel
BY: STUART BROWN
Irecently expanded my travels
exploring our vast and wonderfully
diverse country, this time in Nova
Scotia. Now, I can’t say that I visited the
entire province; however, I was able to
circumnavigate a fairly large portion of
the province and was fascinated with
the distinctiveness of each region. I find
it so exciting to experience the unique
changes in culture, historical background,
local traditions and expressions that exist
between the people that live so close
together, while simultaneously recognizing
some key similarities that these honest,
dedicated, heart-warming, salt-of-theearth
people typically share.
I was so taken with the pleasurable sights
and locations of Nova Scotia; following the
scenic Lighthouse Route to Peggy’s Cove,
through Mahone Bay, on to Lunenburg
to see the Bluenose II and the Fisheries
Museum of the Atlantic, exploring the
loyalist town of Shelburne, and the
experiencing the culture and history of the
Acadian people on French Shore. With all
of these travels and sights, I had to keep
reminding myself to focus on the culinary
and local beverage opportunities that
surrounded me.
I found my mind constantly
wandering to thoughts like
“I could live here…and here…
and there.”
The Ironworks Distillery in Lunenburg was my first
opportunity to taste local, hand-crafted liquids. Well known
for their vodka made from Annapolis Valley apples as well as
some pretty fine gin, rum, brandy, eau de vie and liqueurs, this
micro-distillery was established in 2009 in what was the old
blacksmith shop complete with coal-fired forges. The tasting
and tour at this distillery should not be missed!
Over the years, I’ve had a wine colleagues from Nova Scotia
tell me about the young, yet exuberant wineries existing in
that province. In truth, I thought they were being more loyal
than truthful about the wines being produced there, so I didn’t
pay much attention. This was my opportunity to try the wines
of Nova Scotia.
The first winery I came across while travelling the south shore
in the La Have River Valley was Petite Rivière Vineyards.
Although the views of rolling vineyards were magnificent
from the beautiful winery tasting room, I was most impressed
with the wines. They were well made in an honest, straight
forward, true to Nova Scotia manner. The winery produces
sparkling wines, whites, roses and reds that were mostly made
with hybrid grapes varieties such as Leon Millot, L’Acadie
Blanc, Seyval Blanc and Lucy Khulman as well as some
vinifera grape types (the ones we are more used to seeing)
Riesling and gewürztraminer.
My gastronomic adventure took me into Nova Scotia’s
Annapolis Valley, where I stayed Wolfville. This is an area
rich in agriculture and where products made from the land.
Just outside of town are several fantastic wineries including
Benjamin Bridge, Luckett Vineyards, L’Acadie Vineyards and
Domaine de Grand Pré.
It was interesting to see that the wineries collaborated in
forming the appellation Tidal Bay. An appellation is a set of
laws that produce a typical-type wine. Officially launched
in 2012, Tidal Bay is a crisp, aromatic white wine displaying
unique characteristics of the cool, Nova Scotia climate. It was
inspired by the influence of the sea, given the proximity of the
wineries to the sea. There are a few standards the individual
wineries need to follow, but most importantly, the wine must
demonstrate a distinctive taste profile of fresh, green fruit
with lively acidity and a low alcohol, mineral clean finish.
The Tidal bay wines are a true delight to any Nova Scotia day.
Tidal Bay is produced by most Nova Scotia wineries and pairs
wonderfully with the local seafood dishes.
My visit to Benjamin Bridge was truly eye opening.
Their collection of handcrafted fine wines, including
their world class Méthode Classique sparkling wines,
the immensely popular Nova 7, and their limited
edition luxury wines have raised the profile of Nova
Scotia wines both in Canada and internationally. I
look forward to seeing more world class wines from
Benjamin Bridge in the years to come.
TRAVELLING
EDITOR
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW
SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME?
BY: TRACEY DRAKE | THE TRAVELLING EDITOR
IFone of your travel goals this year is to experience something beautiful and oneof-a-kind;
to visit a place you have never been where you can feast your eyes, treat
your belly and nourish your soul, take a trip to Ecuador and spend a few nights at the
middle of the world, at Hotel El Cráter.
Ecuador is a very special place all on its own (definitely put this wonderful country
on your travel bucket list), and yet when I arrived at Hotel El Cráter, which is twenty
minutes from Quito and just five minutes from the equator, I really felt like I had
walked down a secret garden path to somewhere truly magical.
Covered with hand-carved pumice stone, surrounded by an abundance of green space,
and sitting on the edge of Pululahua, Hotel El Cráter is one of only two inhabited
volcanoes in the world. It was awesome how the landscape and the weather would
change by the minute; thick, dense white fog appearing out of nowhere.
There are just twelve suites on this hotel property, each with an exceptional view
towards Pululahua Volcano. Decor includes white linens and rich woods, and the
suites are airy and filled with natural light. This place is very restful.
The palpable artistic and ecological context of El Cráter, which opened in 2009, was
intentional. An exceptional restaurant that serves local cuisine with a modern riff, as
well as a lovely little art gallery keeps things interesting here. Just walking the property
grounds is an experience; the ancient stone, lush landscapes, deep valleys and you can
even feed the resident llamas.
MITAD DEL MUNDO
Middle of the World (Mitad del Mundo in Spanish) is located 26 kilometres
north of Quito, Ecuador. Here you will find the Monument to the Equator,
where you can stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one
foot in the Southern Hemisphere. Did you know that at the equator, the
sun rises at 6:00 a.m every morning and sets at 6:00 p.m every evening?
Hotel El Cráter is just five minutes from Mitad del Mundo, and is one of
the attractions that has placed this boutique hotel property on the tourist
map. Lucky for overnight guests, most visitors come for the restaurant and
to marvel at the Volcanic views, but never seem to upset the peaceful and
pristine balance of this property.
