) New Chef for the
Mulberry Tree
Lewis Jackson has been appointed Head Chef at The
Mulberry Tree in Boughton Monchelsea. He is a
Kentish trained chef, starting his career at Thanet
College, joining the Mulberry Tree two years ago.
According to Lewis, “Having spent two years in
the brigade at The Mulberry Tree I am excited about
leading the kitchen of such an established Kentish destination
eatery. I love what the restaurant stands for with its focus on food provenance
and quality local ingredients and I’m really looking forward to working with the team here

Simply Ice Creams Peanut Brittle Ice cream won a highly
commended award in the Grocer awards this month
and a consumer report by Cambridge Market Research
group have reported that 88% of consumers tested felt
that Simply Ice Cream was ‘better than all other ice creams
on the market’ and that it ‘surpassed all expectations’. The
Peanut Brittle made in partnership with Fudge Kitchen is
also shortlisted in the Cafe Quality food awards and the Quality
Food awards due to be announced in the next month.

Year for
Charrington’s
2016 has been a great year
for Charrington’s. We joined
Produced in Kent and have
been busy forging new relationships
with some of Kent’s best stores and eateries, as well
as running numerous tasting sessions locally. This summer we
launched our Apple Crisps (a medley of Cox, Russet and Cheerful
Gold). Our wine-like sparkling Estate Craft Cider and singlevariety
apple juices won 3 awards and 4 stars at Great Taste, flying
the flag for Kent’s finest produce on the national stage. This year’s
harvest has produced another delicious crop of apples. We’re
looking forward to even more success in 2017 and continuing
to make every apple count.

Following a rather lovely

Whitstable Produce Store won
two Kent Independent Traders Awards
- the only business to win two categories - and sponsored the
first WhitLitFood Festival, December sees the Store celebrate
its third birthday on Small Business Saturday by launching its
Christmas windows with a very special birthday cake and hamper
competition. The Store held its first event to celebrate WhitLitFood,
hosting a tutored wine tasting by fellow Produced in Kent member
Hush Heath Estate as well as providing Kentish goodies for the

On our Farm on the Romney Marsh
in Kent we also have a small flock
of coloured Romney Ewes as well as
our main Flock. Our ewes produce
amazing coloured fleeces which
our Weavers have been able to

over the last 18 months collecting
our fleeces and working with our
weavers to produce our new range and now our team at Romney Marsh

Macknade Fine Foods will
be extending its opening hours every

Harvest is now over at Gibbet Oak Farm, and
we have plenty of fruit to share with you -

The Potato Shop has had a logo redesign with thanks to
Vincent Design.
Our logo is now multi-coloured to reflect the many colours
of potatoes we grow and incorporates the name of our farm,
where they are grown.
This year we have 28 varieties, some of the old favourites,
King Edwards, Nicola and Wilja. Some of the new favourites
Yukon Gold, Marfona and Picasso. We still grow exotics,
Vitelotte, Salad Blue, Rattes and Pink Fir.

) Canterbury Farmers Market
Canterburys Westgate Hall, the former drill hall in the
centre of Canterbury, which was saved from demolition by
a group of volunteers from the local community has been
offering a unique glimpse into the local produce markets.
The farmers and makers market started in April this year,
running on the 3rd Saturday of each month, it combines great veg
and baked goods along with a real community feel and has brought
farmers and makers face to face for the first time. With Christmas
fast approaching, the market will feature seasonal veg and gifts, and a

Weald Smokery
The Weald Smokery has added a lovely new product to
its range of traditional smoked food, the Royal Fillet of
smoked salmon. This is smoked in the traditional brick
kilns over smouldering local oak shavings, then the
prime fillet is cut out so that it can be cut horizontally into
medallions which could be served with a wasabi sauce or
similar. This makes an ideal starter or canape and would
certainly stimulate conversation!

to announce that they are finally moving their
home-based operation into a large, commercial unit.
This move has been made possible by a successful 2016
which has seen the company win their first Great Taste

on export opportunities begin and co-founder Louisa
receive her tea sommelier accreditation.

Following a three
year restoration,
the premium craft
distillery based inside the historic
Pumphouse No. 5 at Chatham Maritime, is open for tours.
The distillery will be open weekly from Wednesday to
Saturday for pre arranged tours. Visitors can take part in
one of several tailor made experiences where you can see
the entire distilling process in action, explore and enjoy
Copper Rivet Distillery products, experience a botanicals
masterclass, or learn how to distil your own gin.

A Medway based packaging business is helping
to give disadvantaged children an extra special
Christmas.
Actionpoint Packaging are supplying free
boxes to package all the presents that will
be given to children as part of the Heart FM
and Bluewater Shopping Centre ‘The Giving
Tree’ promotion. This promotion is to help
disadvantaged children across Kent and Sussex
to give them an extra special Christmas. Last
year there were 26 charities who benefited and
received over 11,000 presents.
Heart then make sure that all the presents are
delivered in time for Christmas to children’s
hospices, children’s wards, Christmas parties etc.

Vineyards find Time
for Dandelion Charity
at The Mulberry Tree
The Mulberry Tree, Boughton Monchelsea and
Biddenden teamed up to provide over 50 of
Kent’s greatest foodies with a night of finedining
and fundraising.
The Mulberry Tree’s award-winning chefs
prepared a 7-course menu bursting with
goodies sourced from the Garden of England.
Biddenden’s owner and winemaker, Julian
Barnes, carefully selected wines produced at
his estate to match each course.
The proceedings, chaired by Baroness Debbie
Steadman-Scott, included a raffle and auction
with donations from Kent’s tourist attractions,
Produced in Kent members and Dandelion
Time supporters.
The evening raised an astonishing £7,020
for Dandelion Time, a local charity helping
children and their families that are the victims
of trauma, abuse and neglect.
