The following booklet is a compilation of academic programs – undergraduate and graduate degrees,
specializations within broader courses of study, and short-term certificate programs – designed to
equip participants with both the theoretical foundations and the practical skills to address global
challenges: extreme poverty, food insecurity, and disaster recovery, among many others. The programs
featured are offered at universities throughout Israel, and all are taught in English.
Whether you're an incoming or current BA student, a young professional looking to continue your
education, or simply looking for a meaningful way to learn and grow for a summer; whether your
interests lie in business, social work, medicine or politics; there are a multitude of ways to deepen your
engagement with global issues while living and studying in Israel. We hope this booklet serves as a
useful resource as you explore study opportunities that will inspire and inform your path toward global

ABOUT OLAM AND SID-ISRAEL
OLAM is a shared platform for promoting global Jewish service and international
development. Founded by the Alliance for Global Good, Charles and Lynn
Schusterman Family Foundation and Pears Foundation in March 2015, OLAM is a
broad coalition of 47 partner organizations, working together to raise awareness
in the global Jewish community of the importance of supporting the world’s most
vulnerable communities and to improve the quality of our work on the ground.
Our coalition partners are Jewish and Israeli organizations engaged in humanitarian
aid, international development, volunteerism and social justice advocacy. OLAM
connects our coalition partners to each other; communicates their work to the
broader Jewish community; and convenes communal leaders to increase Jewish

SID-Israel is the Israeli branch of the Society for International Development (SID), a
global forum of individuals and organizations in the field of sustainable economic
and social development. Founded in 1957, SID currently boasts over 3,000 members
in 80 countries and 45 branches around the world. SID influences developmentrelated
policy by virtue of its special consultative status in various international
organizations, including: UNFPA, UNICEF, ILO, FAO, ECOSOC, UNEP and others.
SID-Israel is an umbrella organization with 66 member organizations, which works
with the Israeli government and Israeli humanitarian actors. We aim to galvanize
Israeli society to broad involvement in the field of international development and

The Medical School for International Health is the only four year medical school that incorporates global health
coursework into all four years of the curriculum. Centered on the principles of cross-cultural medical practice,
the curriculum includes studies in international preventative medicine, geographic medicine, tropical diseases,
global environment, and refugee and disaster medicine. The MD degree is awarded by Ben-Gurion University
of the Negev.

conducive to work with communities across the globe. An integral part the program is the semester-long
internship with an international NGO, held in the third semester of the program.

Over the course of one full academic year, this program provides basic and advanced tools of the theory and
practice of public health and community medicine for those either currently engaged in this field or planning to do
so in the future. The program promotes excellence in international public health research and practice covering a

to critically examine current global health challenges. The American-based curriculum is taught by expert local
and international faculty and meets the specific set of requirements of MPH programs abroad. In an increasingly
integrated world marked by growing disparity, public health leaders will need to be aware of how global and
national forces affect health within and between national borders. The University of Haifa, in partnership with other

This program addresses global trends such as migration and the emergence of multicultural societies, and
increased awareness and visibility of processes of marginalization of certain groups and of social injustice and
inequality. Multicultural Social Work education explores personal, environmental and socio-political perspectives
of diversified populations and develops knowledge and skills for culturally competent care for such populations. It
attempts to raise the issue of balancing between needs and rights of such populations and suggests avenues to
enhance cultural sensitivity, cross-cultural communication and cultural competence overall.

A rigorous, one-year program of study that introduces an interdisciplinary approach to peace and conflict
management. The program addresses intergroup conflicts at different levels, ranging from local community
conflicts to international conflicts, and introduces a variety of approaches to dealing with such conflicts including
formal and informal ones. While special attention is given to Middle East conflicts, the program also addresses
conflicts and possible interventions to promote peace in other parts of the world. In addition to the great variety
of courses within fields such as political science, international relations, psychology, sociology, history and Middle
East Studies, the program offers a wide range of exciting and enriching activities. These activities include field trips
to regions of Israel that are facing conflicts and dealing with them; a practicum component in NGOs working in
the domain of peace and conflict; thoughtful simulations of decision-making and negotiations; and guest lectures
given by practitioners and academics.

The Arava Institute offers an accredited university-level semester or yearlong program for both undergraduate
and graduate students. Take courses in diverse environmental fields, engage in peace-building and environmental
leadership seminars, and partake in educational field trips — all with a diverse student population hailing from
Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and beyond. Courses focus on the areas of water management, renewable energy, ecology,

Taught in English by leading scholars and practitioners, this unique interdisciplinary program offers five intensive
conflict resolution courses (10 credits) and a particular emphasis on conflicts found in Israel. Upon completion of
the full program, a certificate of participation is awarded by Bar-Ilan University’s Program in Conflict Management,
Resolution and Negotiations. Students can request an official university transcript of their graduate level courses
and grades for transfer to other institutions. Applicants should hold or be candidates for an undergraduate or
graduate degree. Degrees and studies are acceptable from all the social sciences, the liberal arts or the humanities.

Each July, the Manna Center Program for Food Safety and Security offers a month-long Summer Institute with a
number of courses for Israeli and international graduate students and select undergraduates entering their final
year from any institution of higher learning worldwide. Some of these courses form the required core curriculum for
the degree Concentration in Food Safety and Security at Tel Aviv University. Courses are taught by leading international
experts and two tracks are offered: Policy/Nutrition and Agriculture/Plant Sciences. Students successfully
completing the Summer Institute courses will receive a Certificate of Participation as well as an academic transcript
acceptable at most universities worldwide.

themes of sustainable agriculture and renewable energies.

Global Health Graduate Summer Program |

The goal of the graduate-level summer program in global health is to identify and develop a future generation of
individuals who will lead health systems around the world. The program is intended for a broad range of students:
those already studying for their Masters in Public Health (MPH), or students interested in areas including public
health, health care administration, medicine, international affairs, and health policy. Students meet in Israel, learn
together, develop life-long relationships with colleagues from around the world, and then return home to promote
best practices in health care. Upon completion of the program, students will have acquired new skills in leadership
and new knowledge of global public health. Students will receive credits from the University of Haifa, which may
well be applied to their home universities. They will also receive a certificate of completion of the program.
