ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY BY MIKE LATHAM 2006 Leigh beat York 60-16 at Hilton Park in their final league game of the season and secured third place in National League One. Aaron Heremaia, Danny Halliwell, Dean Gaskell and Adam Hughes each scored two tries watched by a crowd of 2,147. 1995 In the last winter season Leigh beat Hunslet 20-12 at Hilton Park with Glynn Davies, Andy Cheetham and Jason O’Loughlin all scoring tries and Chris Wilkinson kicking three goals and two drop-goals. Neil Jukes came off the bench to replace Rob Ball midway through the first half. The crowd was 1,355. The Leigh team was: Wynne; Hill, Davies, Cheetham, O’Loughlin; Wilkinson, Parkinson; Costello, Bannister, Stazicker, Tuavo, Ball, Marsh. Subs: Wilson, Jukes. 1989 A fruitless trip to Belle Vue saw Leigh nilled by Wakefield Trinity and concede 32 points in front of a 4,500 crowd. Graham Herbert and Mike Ogden were handed their first team debuts by coach Billy Benyon. 1978 Barrow edged out visitors Leigh by 8pts to 7 in a division one game at Craven Park. John McAtee scored the visitors’ only try in front of 2,452 spectators. 1976 Leigh visited Wheldon Road for a division one game on a Friday evening and Castleford emerged 28-12 winners, hardly surprising considering the visitors had just been beaten in a Lancashire Cup semi final against Widnes two days previously. Alan Rathbone and Australian Steve Watmore made their Leigh debuts. 1966 Blackpool Borough defeated Leigh 18-2 at the seaside in front of 2,000 spectators. Phil Rowe, signed from Hope Rangers, made his Leigh debut. 1960 Leigh suffered a heavy home defeat, going down 13-28 to St Helens at Hilton Park. Derek Hurt scored Leigh’s try with Brian Fallon kicking five goals in front of 12,000 spectators. 1955 A thrilling game at the Boulevard but Leigh’s players just lost out on winning pay, going down 23-28 to Hull FC. Albert Moore scored two tries for Leigh. The crowd was 12,000. 1949 Leigh eased to a 34-2 home win over Liverpool Stanley, fullback Jimmy Ledgard scoring a try and kicking seven goals. Albert Christy made his Leigh debut. 1938 Warrington emerged 24-8 winners of a Lancashire Cup first round tie at Mather Lane watched by 7,421. Welshman Gwyn Richards, signed on loan from Hull KR scored one of Leigh’s tries. 1932 Leigh’s 12-5 home win over Keighley featured tries from captain Jimmy Osborne and Dick Prescott. 1928 Swinton won <strong>10</strong>-6 at Mather Lane on a Monday evening despite two tries from Leigh’s star halfback Joe Houghton. Leigh held a 6-5 lead until the last minute when Fred Butters settled a superb game with a converted try. 1927 Leigh’s 11-0 home win over St Helens Recs featured a try from newly signed ex Oldham forward Tom Hurtley with winger Stan Baldwin and Welsh centre Wyndham Emery also crossing in the first half. 1921 A bumper crowd of 15,000 at Watersheddings saw Oldham beat visitors Leigh 14-3, Billy Parkinson scoring SEPTEMBER <strong>10</strong> Leigh’s only try early in the game. Parkinson had been a try-scoring hero of Leigh’s Challenge Cup Final win over Halifax four months previously. 19<strong>10</strong> Leigh set off on the 7-35am train for their trip to Merthyr Tydfil which kicked-off at 4-30pm. The long journey was rewarded with two league points from a hard earned 13-3 victory, Bert Ganley scoring a try and kicking two goals. Sam Johnson and Dai Davies also scored tries. But Merthyr later disbanded during the season and the return game was not played. Warren Stevens in action against York ten years ago. Scott Grix was fullback in the Leigh team against York in 2006.
