How old were you when you started bowling? I was 5 years old when I started at Centennial Lanes in Tinley Park. How often do you practice bowling? I would say a lot. I practice with my team twice a week and then mostly on Sundays, for about three hours. Who is your favorite professional bowler? Sean Rash, because he’s got a good style. What is the best advice your coach has ever given you? He tells me to focus on the game. What’s the highest score you have ever gotten? I bowled a 296 when I was in junior high. What is your favorite after-school snack? Coffee. I like the flavored creamers. My favorite is hazelnut. If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be? Without a doubt it would have to be Sean Rash, because he’s my favorite pro bowler. What are you most excited about for this season? I’m looking forward to state this year, and working with my team and my coaches this year. What are your favorite things to watch on Netflix? I watch a lot of TV shows. I always a Godzilla fan. I like Star Wars, and I’ve been really into “Pokémon” lately. Have you ever been to a professional bowling event? If so, what was that like? At the end of the school year my sophomore year, I was in the Pro-Am with the pro bowlers. It was really fun, and I was really excited to be there. See, of Orland Park, daughter of Michael and Cynthia See, signed her National Letter of Intent to attend DePaul University, where she plans to major in business/communications and continue her volleyball career. Kuligoski, who transferred from Jacksonville State University, averaged 5 points and 3.6 rebounds over last five starts in 2016. This past season, he played in 29 games making 31-of-71 field goals, 7-of-30 3-pointers and 12-of- 18 free throws. He averaged 5 points per game to close final three games, averaged 5 points and 3.6 rebounds starting all five games in lateseason win streak and shot 55 percent in win streak. opprairie.com sports the orland park prairie | November 17, 2016 | 41 Boys Basketball Sandburg looking to improve this season Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor The Sandburg boys basketball team held its tryouts Nov. 7, and is gearing up for the start of another season. The Orland Park Prairie offers the following breakdown of what to expect. Coaching Staff Todd Allen returns with 21-years of coaching experience, 12 of those at Sandburg. He is joined by assistant coach Randy Voels. Team Overview Coming off of an 11-16 season this past year and losing all of their starters, the Eagles will be faced with not only a young roster but also having to make up those losses. With 17 students on the roster and only fourth of those seniors, the underclassman are going to have to step up in a big way this season for the Eagles. Zak Razik and Sean Mc- Shane — both All-Conference athletes — were two of the more vital losses from which the team will have to rebound this season. Scoring, rebounding and assists are at the forefront of Allen’s mind this season. Chris Toth comes back this year as a senior, along with fellow senior teammates Grant Glover, Jack Witt and Ed Mila. “We return Chris Toth, who toward the end of the year started playing for us,” Allen said of the 6-foot-6 senior, who also played football this season. “He actually started some games towards the end of the year. He’s the only guy we have back this year that has a lot of experience.” Jake Pygon returns this season, after an injury benched the player for the second half of the previous season. His twin brother, Jason, will also be returning as part of the junior class lineup. “We kind of have a situation this year, because there was really nobody who was a starter last year who saw a lot of minutes,” Allen said. “There’s a lot of competition for playing time, which I think is a good thing.” Offense Perhaps the biggest addition to the Eagles lineup this season will be St. Rita transfer Barlow Alleruzzo. The 6-foot-8 junior will be a vital height boost to the Eagles roster. Alleruzzo and Toth at the biggest on the team, and will be expected to help out with rebounds this season, among other tasks. Mila early on seems like he will be another addition to the offensive play of this team. “I thought he had a good summer for us,” Allen said of Mila’s contribution during the summer league. “He started shooting the basketball, so I know he’s looking to contribute this year.” Defense “We’re not real big, so we know we have to play physical and aggressive,” Allen said. Defensively, Allen’s strategy this season will mix of man-on-man, with zone and full-court defense. With no standout shooter, as of yet, having a strong defensive strategy will be crucial to this team’s success this year. Allen is banking on the team’s athleticism to create a quicker pace and more up-tempo style of play he hopes will play into the team’s favor. Looking ahead “I really do like our junior class,” Allen said. “We have a lot of good athletes and a lot of guys who are going to get significant playing time as juniors.” Mila said in an interview that Allen is focusing on trust this season, and with no set starters, everyone is on a level playing field at the start of the season. Playing time will be earned this season. With only four seniors on the roster, there will be plenty of it to go around. “I don’t think we really have one guy who essential this year; I feel like this year is going to involve everybody,” Mila said. “That’s something coach emphasized, as well.” The team’s first test will come in the Reavis Invitational, slated to start Monday, Nov. 21. They will not have their first home game until December. They are to face their rival Andrew at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, giving the Eagles just less than a month of practice and game experience to develop that trust Allen mentioned in tryouts. “With the group of guys we have, we’re going to have to want the win more than everyone else, believe in everyone and trust in the guys around us,” Mila said. Wrestling Patrick Brucki chasing elusive state title in senior season ‘Scrappy’ talent hoping to emerge this season for Sandburg Dave Owen, Freelance Reporter With the talent, drive and smarts of Princeton-bound Patrick Brucki leading the way, Sandburg’s wrestling team is destined to be a force again this season. Despite graduation claiming 2016 state champions Louie Hayes and Rudy Yates, along with three-time state medalist Brian Krasowski, plenty of potential remains. “We took a pretty big hit with our graduating seniors,” Brucki said. “But we have a lot of young guys that are ready to fill a role. “A lot of times that can be better than having a talented known guy, because these young guys don’t have a lot of experience, but they’re ready to learn and super excited to get on the mat. If there’s one word to describe the team this year, it’s scrappiness.” Brucki comes off a second-place Class 3A state finish at 182 pounds this past year (47-3 record) and was third as a sophomore. He looks to close his Illinois career in style. “Patrick has only one expectation for himself this year, and that’s to be an undefeated state champion,” Eagles coach Eric Siebert said. “He is very wellrounded in every aspect of the sport.” Brucki added, “Obviously, I have some pretty high hopes for this year. I just want to relax, be confident and be on the offensive.” Heavyweight Malik Scates (28 wins this past year) is another returning 2016 state qualifier, and Cole Bateman (220) reached state in 2015 as a sophomore. “Malik came on really strong at the end of last year and definitely has the potential to be a state placer,” Siebert said. “Cole is talented and experienced. He should be in the hunt to win a state title at 220.” Another trio of 2016 sectional qualifiers returns in sophomore Sam Wojcik (113), Alex Hirschfield (170) and Ben Kirby (132). “Going into his senior year, Ben looks to build off of last year’s success,” Siebert said. “Sam was a match away from being a state qualifier last year and has really improved through hard work,” Siebert said. Sophomore Pat Nolan figures to make an impact at 126. “It’s not going to take long for everyone in the state to know his name,” Siebert said. “We expect him to have a big year.” Sophomore Miles Trahey (106) and juniors Colin Dominski (160) and Tim Houston (145) are other key additions to the varsity lineup. “Miles is a really talented wrestler and looks to emerge,” Siebert said. “Colin is a very tough kid and is coming off a great football season. And Tim is having a great start to his season in the practice room.” Before pursuing his bright, Ivy League college future, Brucki wants to end his great Sandburg career with a bang. “I have plenty of friends wrestling at the Division I level,” he said. “And they all say the most enjoyable part of wrestling is high school, wrestling in front of your friends, family and community. That’s what motivates me this year.” Between Brucki’s state title chase and a talented young nucleus learning fast, Sandburg is geared up for an interesting winter. “We lost a lot of wins and hardware to graduation last year,” Siebert said. “That said, our attitude and work ethic has been excellent thus far. “We are going to be a pretty scrappy group, and I’m not going to be surprised if this group emerges pretty quickly.”
