Fall 2009
WELCOME TO OUR FIRST SHOW OF THE 2009/2010 SEASON …
Being Chairman of Hamilton Theatre Inc. presents itself with many challenges
and a lot of surprises along the way. We bring together a diverse collection of
talented people, both on and offstage, to magically produce musicals in order to
transport you away from your everyday activities.
Our job, yours and mine, is to support, encourage, attend and promote local
community theatre to enable our talented people to “strut their stuff”. We thank
our audiences who continue to make this possible.
Enjoy your walk through “the Woods”.
including Hair (George Berger 2007) and Jesus Christ
elected Assistant Director for the Canadian Orpheus
Male Choir and hopes one day to teach music. This
performance is dedicated to his three daughters and his
fall. Previous credits include Arrivals and Departures,
like a princess!
Julie Buffett (Giant) - Julie is happy to join the cast of
Into the Woods. She made her stage debut last
summer in The Shooting Star Theatre Company’s
production of Baby: The Musical. Julie has worked
behind the scenes at HTI for Once Upon A Mattress,
My Fair Lady, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to
the Forum, Anything Goes, and South Pacific. Thank
you to family and friends for their support and
encouragement.
V. Angela Burley (Jack’s Mother) - Angela is thrilled to
be performing with such an amazingly talented cast in
Christopher, Kirsten, Leina & Noah for constantly
reminding me what is truly important in life.
Bethany Charters (Baker’s Wife) - There is nowhere
Bethany would rather be than under the hot stage lights
(except with her babies). Bethany is thrilled to be doing
her fifth show with HTI, and to once again be able to
work under the amazing direction and musical direction
of Sharon Reynolds and Michael Domet. Bethany has
been performing on stage for over twenty years in such
roles as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Mme.
Thénardier in Les Misérables, Jeannie in Hair, and
Eric Charters (Cinderella’s Prince) - Eric recently
completed a successful run at HTI in the title role of
Jekyll & Hyde, and is honoured to have the chance to
return for this production of Into the Woods. He would
like to send a shout out to Milky White, with whom he
worked nine years ago as Jack in the Drury Lane
production. Other stage credits include Les Misérables
(Javert), Grease (Sonny), Footloose (Chuck), Godspell
(John/Judas), and concert versions of Les Misérables
our friends and family for much support, and to the Lord
Jesus Christ for, well, everything. Outside of the
Woods, Eric is the very proud father of Christopher and
Abigail (love you two!). “A little nonsense now and then
is cherished by the wisest men.” - Willy Wonka
James Clemenger (Cinderella’s Father) - James
caught the theatre bug many years ago in Colombia
when he was drafted to play Arthur in a production of
Camelot. From then on he joined every show he could
get into: playing cards in The Odd Couple, carrying a
spear in Henry IV, half a dozen jobs in Guys & Dolls, El
Gallo in The Fantastiks and Petrucchio in Kiss Me Kate.
The theatre played matchmaker too, bringing James
together with Beth, who is professionally trained in
theatre. After moving to Canada, James and Beth took
a few years away from the stage while raising children,
returning to begin discovering Hamilton’s amazing
theatre community. In the last few years, James has
enjoyed participating in Oklahoma!, Guys & Dolls, My
Fair Lady (Alfred Doolittle), The Sound of Music, and
H.M.S. Pinafore. James is really glad to get to work
with such a talented cast and crew here with HTI.
Joe is excited to be back onstage with such a talented
cast and crew. Some favourite roles include Mr.
both Dundas Little Theatre and Theatre Aquarius,
Bobby in Cabaret with Hamilton Theatre Inc., and two
different productions of A Chorus Line; as Mark with
Hamilton Theatre Inc. and Paul with the Tivoli Theatre.
Joe would like to thank his family for their support, Chris
for the help, HTI and Sharon for this wonderful
opportunity. Joe hopes you all enjoy this journey Into
the Woods, well … I wish!

Kathleen Dodd (Cinderella’s Stepmother) - Kathleen
has lived in the Hamilton area for almost three years. In
her hometown of Sacramento, California, she was
involved in theatre for many years, including three
different productions each of Godspell (Sonia/Robin/
Robin), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum (Gymnasia), and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
® Dreamcoat (Jacob’s Wife/Ensemble), plus a
two year stint in 6 Women with Brain Death (The Studio
Theatre). Here in Canada, she has appeared in South
Pacific and Stage to Screen (HTI), The Secret Garden
and H.M.S. Pinafore (Drury Lane), as well as Baby
(Shooting Star Theatre Company) and 6 Women with
Brain Death (McMaster Summer Drama Festival). This
is her second production of Into the Woods (California
State University, Sacramento).
Luke Fillion (Steward) – Luke has appeared with Hamilton
Theatre Inc. in Hot Mikado (Pooh-Bah), South
Pacific (Stewpot), Anything Goes (Photographer) and
My Fair Lady (Cockney #3). Film and television credits
include A Separate Peace, Monk, Eleventh Hour, and
Queer as Folk. In addition to being a professional
photographer, Luke enjoys singing Bass in the Brenda
Uchimaru Singers, and is the creator/key performer of
the Candlelight Concert Series. He would like to thank
Sharon, Richelle, the cast and crew for this fun journey
into the woods. For more information about Luke,
please visit www.lukefillion.com.
Sheila Flis (Witch) - Growing up in Hamilton, Sheila led
a rather sheltered life, so she turned to musical theatre
to fulfill her secret longing to be naughty. Most of the
characters that she has portrayed have bad reputations
for one thing or another. These have included Miss
Hannigan in Annie (DLTP), Ado Annie in Oklahoma!
(DLTP), Queen Aggravain in Once Upon A Mattress
(DLTP & HTI), Meg Brockie in Brigadoon (DLTP) and
now, the Witch in this fine production of Into the Woods.
Her favourite role to date, ironically, is Sister Mary
Amnesia, who, even if she had led a naughty life before
becoming a nun, she would not have remembered it.
Sheila sends out a special thank you to her fellow thespian
and husband, Greg, for his love and support.
Matt Hodgson (Rapunzel’s Prince) - This is Matt’s sixth
production with HTI. Previous credits include Cabaret,
My Fair Lady, Anything Goes, South Pacific and Hot
Mikado. Many thanks to HTI for the fun, supportive,
professional environment that helps me learn, improve
and conquer the fear of public singing! A new experience
yet again; besting seasonal sickness and this
wonderful pandemic while preparing for a live performance.
Thanks to the cast for getting through it in spite
of not having a full cast until opening night. Who'd have
thought - Sharon was right?! Way to go Cara, for patiently
getting through your first experience of theatre
life. As always, thanks Mom, Dad, MHSA&R.
Steph Lewis (Sleeping Beauty) - Steph is delighted to
be working alongside such a talented cast in this season’s
production of Into the Woods. Previous shows
with Hamilton Theatre: Hot Mikado (Ensemble), South
Pacific (Ensign Maggie McLean/Ensemble), My Fair
Lady (Flower Girl/Ensemble). Other theatre credits
include As You Like It Or What You Will (Rosalind) and
Julius Caesar (Ensemble), both with Stratford Shakespeare
School. She also performed in various other
recitals and plays with the former Sundance Studios.
Steph regrets that this will be her last performance with
HTI for the next few years, as she heads off to university
in September.
Brianne McNeely (Lucinda) - Brianne is pleased to be
making her musical theatre debut as an adult with HTI.
Having been a member of the Acadia University Vocal
Ensemble for four years, Brianne graduated and ended
up teaching in China, where she directed English-
Language choirs for her students. For five years she
has been enjoying the exciting (albeit smaller) stage
that is her classroom at the elementary school where
she is a music teacher. Other experiences include
winning a bronze medal in women’s barbershop with
the International Champion North Metro Chorus, and a
brief but exhilarating role as Dorothy in The Wizard of
Oz…when she was ten.
Stacy Milford (Florinda) - Stacy is delighted to finally
play a villain, and in one of her favourite musicals! New
to HTI, she has performed for many years with community
theatres in Simcoe, Brantford, Hamilton, Guelph
and Windsor; favourites include Titanic, Laurey in Oklahoma!,
Alice in Flowers for Algernon, Susan in Company
and Carrie in Carousel. Stacy holds a BA in music
and anthropology, and an MA in cultural anthropology,
and hopes to finally earn a useful degree by beginning
her Master of Social Work next fall. She has also
done some commercial, television and film work, and
spends her free time learning tap and ballroom dancing.
Thanks to a fantastic cast and crew for an amazing
opportunity!
Matt Moore (Narrator) – This is Matt’s first onstage
production with HTI, having directed our productions of
Jekyll & Hyde and Urinetown: The Musical. Previous
stage credits include Mothra in Godzilla (McMaster),
Matt in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
(Abridged) (Black Box Fire), Frank in Reality Inc.
(McMaster), Charlemagne in Pippin, Bardolph/
Burgundy in Henry V (McMaster) and Jacques in As
You Like It (MTC). Matt would like to thank his family
and friends for their constant love, support and understanding.
Joshua Oliver (Jack) – Currently attending secondary
school, Joshua is happy to be making his community
theatre debut with Hamilton Theatre Inc. in this production
of Into the Woods. This past spring, he appeared
as Jack in the ArtSmart production of Into the Woods,
presented at Hill Park Secondary School. He also
appeared as Reuben in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
® Dreamcoat (Hill Park S.S.). He is very excited
about this production, and wants to thank all of his
fellow cast members for the enjoyable experience!
Jennifer Watson (Rapunzel) – Into the Woods is Jennifer’s
first performance with HTI; however, Jennifer is not
new to the stage, as she has been performing in musical
theatre since the age of 12. She was recently seen
in Theatre Ancaster’s production of Beauty and the
Beast. Jennifer would like to thank the directing team
for making her a part of this very special show, and is
looking forward to future productions with HTI.
Brenda Ziemann (Cinderella’s Mother, Little Red’s
Grandmother) - Brenda is thrilled to be going Into the
Woods with this awesome cast. This is Brenda’s 20 th
show, including plays, musicals and opera. Some of
her favourite roles have been Duchess of Plaza-Toro in
The Gondoliers, Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor ® Dreamcoat, and Belinda in Dido & Aeneas.
When Brenda is not on stage, she’s singing in
local choirs, reading voraciously and teaching at Peter
Pan Preschool. However, her favourite pastime is playing
with her three kids -- you girls rock!

BACKGROUND
As a very young man [Stephen] Sondheim attempted, unsuccessfully, to musicalize Mary Poppins. Almost forty
years later he and [James] Lapine discovered fertile ground for their imaginations by creating an original tale of
their own in which the [Baker’s and Baker’s Wife’s] quests propel them into the more familiar world of such classic
fairy tales as Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Little Red Ridinghood. Influenced by the theories
of Carl Jung and by the insights of Bruno Bettelheim, whose work on the significance of fairy tales, The
Uses of Enchantment, explores the darker Freudian ramifications of these stories, Sondheim and
Lapine evolved a musical that manages to be delightful, melodic, and entertaining as well as
intellectually astute and psychologically complex.
The themes that unite these disparate stories concern the difficulties of achieving
maturity, the complex relationship between parent and child, and ultimately the
necessity of recognizing human interdependence. Like a contemporary brothers
Grimm, Sondheim and Lapine weave a magical fabric of witches, giants, and spells
but never allow the audience to forget the serious thematic underpinnings of the work.
Into the Woods enjoyed a gradual evolutionary birth. Beginning as a reading at
Playwrights Horizons, the work went through three workshop readings in New
York, and a tryout in San Diego, before opening on Broadway to generally
favorable reviews and garnering for Sondheim yet another Tony Award for
best music and lyrics. As with all of Sondheim’s work, neither critics nor public
were unanimous in their response, but judging from the general tenor of the
reviews and the enthusiastic approbation at the Tony Awards ceremony,
Sondheim has finally gained the respect of all. He is universally acknowledged to
be the foremost American exponent of his chosen art form and is accorded a kind
of awe not generally associated with either the musical or with other living artists. -
PRODUCTION TEAM
Michael Domet (Musical Director/Piano) - Michael is
background in theatre including 50 productions and
most recently was involved in composing and recording
music for Holmes on Homes: New Orleans. Additionally,
which Michael is stage-directing.
Producer’s Notes
When the opportunity to produce Into the Woods came to my
attention, although I was quite tentative, I decided to take on
the position with fervour. This is my first stint at producing
theatrical work and I have been blessed and honoured to be a
part of what I feel is one of the best cast and crews I have
ever had the privilege of working with.
From the audition stage to now, it has been an interesting and
eye opening experience. At the auditions we saw so much
talent and had a very hard time deciding who to cast but I’m
positive the right choices were made. This cast has had to
deal with a few changes, but they took it on with
professionalism, heart and soul.
Backstage, we have had the best of the best building,
painting and collecting, and, without them, these performers
wouldn’t look anywhere near as good as they do. These
people volunteer their time and talents and seldom are
recognized, but I am grateful to have worked along side of
them.
I am very indebted to HTI for allowing me this opportunity, as
well as to Sharon and Bob Reynolds for believing in me and
helping me every step along the way, I’ve learned more than
you know. I am extremely grateful to Courtney for taking this
on without a moment’s hesitation, and for being my
backbone. As always, a big debt of gratitude goes out to Beryl
for making the cast look fabulous. And, also, a huge amount
of thanks to Michael for coming in last minute, and just being
the consummate professional.
Finally, to the audiences, who without your support this cast
and this company would not be possible, THANK YOU!
Enjoy your journey Into the Woods.

HISTORY OF HAMILTON THEATRE INC.
In 1956, a group of dynamic and talented people created The Hamilton Theatre Company,
presenting their first show, South Pacific, at Westdale Secondary School. In 1960,
Hamilton Theatre Company became Hamilton Theatre Incorporated (HTI). HTI’s
headquarters then moved from above a restaurant on King Street to the Old Fire Hall at
the corner of Strathcona and Head Street. After more than 25 years at the Old Fire Hall,
HTI’s headquarters moved again, in 1987, to its present address on MacNab Street North.
HTI’s performance spaces over the years have included Westdale Secondary School,
Mohawk College, Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School, The Great Hall of Hamilton
Place and HTI’s Studio Theatre. HTI is currently performing at the Downtown Arts Centre.
This 300-seat theatre, located at 28 Rebecca Street, was the former Hamilton
Headquarters of The Salvation Army. HTI has been a training ground and a place for
theatre people to hone their art. Acting, singing, dancing, designing, creating, engineering,
working and playing together has made HTI one of the most successful and enduring
community theatre companies in Southern Ontario. HTI is an organization completely
made up of volunteers, all with a passion and love for the theatrical arts.
This Spring
Hamilton Theatre Inc.
presents ...
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, as much as anyone, virtually
invented rock ’n’ roll, and now their songs provide the
basis for an electrifying entertainment that illuminates a
golden age of American culture. In an idealized 1950s
setting, the classic themes of love won, lost and imagined
blend with hilarious set-pieces and slice-of-life emotions.
Featuring nearly 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded,
including “Yakety Yak”, “Hound Dog”, “Love Potion #9”,
“Jailhouse Rock”, “Stand by Me”, “Poison Ivy” and “Treat
Me Nice”, SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE isn't just great pop
music - it’s compelling musical theatre.
