Achieving Potential Through Unique Services for People with Complex Disabilities in their Community

November 12, 2016
Dear Aptus Supporters,
My son Adnan is a 25-year old young man who has always strived through life despite
intellectual and physical disabilities – all through his own sense of ambition and
determination. He is the hero in our family!
We moved to Canada in July 2015 after giving up on the lack of adult programs, lack
of wheelchair accessiblity, and inconsistent health care services provided in Amman,
Jordan. My husband and I researched day programs, toured different centres and
connected to other parents on social media to find the best possible options for
Adnan. I kept feeling that Aptus would be the best fit and it happened to be!
Adnan felt at home right from the beginning thanks to the staff, the accessible facility,
the freedom of choice and the belief in what Adnan can be and achieve. These all
helped make Adnan's transition as smooth as can be.
Adnan has thrived in the Art Program, faster than I ever expected! Adnan's
self-esteem and confidence have soared. This is clear to everyone who knows him.
We are beyond grateful for our lives today, with Adnan in programs at Aptus, and our
new home in Toronto. With the comfort of knowing that Adnan is happy, our family
can now look forward to a bright future.
All the best,
Mona Halawa

Expanding and Growing
As the new President and CEO for Aptus Treatment Centre, I am proud to share the following
report on our impact, achievements and growth. In 2015-2016, Aptus supported 12% more
children, teens and adults with complex disabilities through:
Aptus’ first-ever respite programs for children and adults
Support groups for families and children, co-led with the Centre for Addiction and
Mental Health (CAMH)
Aptus' offering clinical services at other organizations
The developmental service sector continues to be challenged by exceptionally long waitlists
and wait times. We could not continue to offer effective, quality-based programming without
the continued support of the Ministry of Child and Youth Services, the Ministry of Community
and Social Services, and our generous donors.
In 2015-2016, Aptus’ donors, corporate sponsors and major foundations supported
these programs:
The Possible Dream Gala 2015 raised over $300,000 net to support training kitchens. We will
soon be welcoming participants from across the GTA into a cutting-edge learning space
The Builder’s Golf Classic 2015 raised needed funds for key repairs at our group homes
The Bowl for Dreams, co-organized with Villanova College, successfully funded 25 adults
attending Camp Jordan
The Scotiabank Marathon allowed families and staff to raise close to $30,000 for fitness and
wellness
The Weston Family Parks Challenge provided significant support to the Aptus Teaching
Landscape, highlighted later in this report
The Aptus Charity Golf Classic 2015 funded a greenhouse and garden for the Aptus
Teaching Landscape
The Zachary Van Zant Memorial Fund was designated to support the Aptus Teaching
Landscape in memory of 21-year-old Zac's love of nature
Many more generous donors highlighted later in this report
We wish to extend our profound gratitude to our committed and caring staff, the long-time
leadership of Cheryl Farrugia, our Ministry partners, and our passionate supporters. With your
support, we are able to grow and serve some of the most vulnerable members of our
community – helping them be the best they can be!
Sincerely,
Ursula Rehdner
President and CEO
Rights for Us
With the recent Ombudsman’s Report “Nowhere to Turn,” many Ontarians became aware of what
individuals with developmental disabilities face in terms of service access, treatment and denied
rights. We are proud that throughout the year, youth and adults in our programs established their
own charter of rights.
Here is a highlight of these rights, with examples shared by the Charter of Rights’ founders:
The right to be a part of the community
Zach shared that he likes going to Tim Horton’s because
he feels "a part of a busy shop and the staff are so nice."
The right to make our own decisions with our money
Donna was proud to buy herself a new nightgown this
year. Donna is a prudent saver and estimates her only
additional expense for 2016 will be a new CD.
The right to be treated with respect
Jeff lives with his family and feels he is treated with
respect at home, at Aptus and when he travels on the TTC.
The right to have fun and be ourselves
Mike lives with his brother and shared how he loves
getting the chance to watch Supercross and to run in the
park with his nieces.
Aptus participants attended a workshop
concerning the Ombudsman’s Report “Nowhere
to Turn” hosted by the ARCH Disability Law
Centre. They were passionate to participate, learn
more and advocate for others with disabilities.

The Weston Family Parks Challenge is supporting the Aptus Teaching Landscape. This
enhanced learning green space will become a nature-focused educational environment
and activity hub for students with complex disabilities and the greater Toronto community.
School ground improvements, including a fruit orchard, edible garden and mini-arboretum,
will complement the City’s recreational improvements to an adjacent park. Education and
stewardship opportunities will engage students and local residents in environmental
programs. This project demonstrates how public, private and non-profit partners can work
together to place parks at the heart of communities.
“We recognize that there is great value in providing hands-on opportunities
for children and adults alike to connect with nature,
especially children with special needs.”
