Unity is” oneness in
differences” .We have
heterogenous cultures
living together in India.
When we talk about
LPU ,it is a smaller
world in itself. It
evidences to be one of
the best platforms
,binding 28 states of the
nation and 25 foreign
countries together and
is a good example of
harmony and
brotherhood.
The university has
given rise to national
integration which is the
foundation of strong
and prosperous India.
So , lets proceed to
glance at the diversied
shades of cultures and
heritages at Asia's
largest university.
APETITE & FLAVOURS
The world
renowned
university is not
just restricted to
academics,but a lot
beyond it.
Whether its hunger or a
need of refreshment,be
it a party
time or just
time pass
with
friends,Lpu
campus has
solutions for
all of them.
From the kashmiri
bar of Jammu and
Kashmir to the idlis
and sambhar of
Andhra Pradesh, the
Hakka noodles of
China or pizzas of
America,one could nd
ample of ranges in
terms of quality and
quantity both.
Lets drive you to the
lovely ride of unique,
sizzling of
unforgettable tastes at
Lpu campus,which
won't spare anybody
without a
mouth -
watering
experience
for sure.
Since the
university is
located at Jalandhar
which is a proper
Punjabi region,and
when we talk about
Punjabis,they require
no introduction as they
have made the world
aware of themselves
2

through their taste ,
culture and hospitality
too.
,but south indians love it
more,which really makes
Stuffed pratha is the
regional food here.
"Tandoori Flames" -is a
pratha- special food stall
near Boys Hostel-5.
The owner Mrs. Neelam
Panday on asking says-
"though I know to make
several kinds of
prathas,but I am
me feel happier."
She added,"there are also
'bhatooras' which is
majorly preferred the by
foreign students.A very
famous sweet dish here
is-"jlebi"".
So,its a must visit spot
,for super huge-prathas
with a nice taste.
specialized in aloo
prathas.
It is overall liked by all
Next to tandoori ames is
the "Mom's
kitchen",owned by
Mr.Varinder Sharma of
Punjab.
On asking the reason
behind the name "Mom's
thali system and "dahi
bhalla" is the item which
is appreciated most.
Lpu has the most of its
students from the
southern part of india .
Specially for them,there
are yummy food stalls
available near Boys
Hostel-5.
kitchen".The answer was
really impressive,he
replies"students should
be provided with healthy
food and we are doing
this job ,just like their
mothers do,thats why its
known as the "Moms
kitchen".
The owner Mr.Sanjeev
Kumaar says"-
idli,dosa,sambhar are not
just eaten by south
indians but also admired
by the Punjabi students
as well.
He also mentions"we
dont cater fast food since
its not fair for our
health.So,we provide the
The waiting outside
the stalls for the turns,
proves why it is being
loved by all.
Apart from
south
indian
food,chines
e kiosks
are also
available at
campus
fusion."
Now comes
the
unimallthe
heart of
Lpu.The
destination
of
all,located opposite to
Girls hostel -3 and 4
and has several
cuisines for all tastes.
First and the foremost-
" Lovely sweets".This
sweet shop is a brand
name not just within
but also
offcampus.
Serves a
variety of
shudhdesi
-ghee
and
vegetarian
sweet
dishes.
Moreover,i
tems like
pizzas
,natkhat
smosas,ma
nchurian rolls,softies
are just lipsmacking.
One of its employees-
Mukesh Kumar replies
5

on asking,"kaju bar
and desi ghee laddoos
is what actually
differentiates lovely
sweets from other
sweet corners".
Mushrif Ali-a student
is strictly vegetarian,
we face problems
adjusting with the
requirements and
somewhere we aren't
happy with this,but
Rasogullas of lovely
(native of
Maldives)says,"he is a
regular customer at this
shop,just for
Rasogullas.In our
region,we ate
seafoods,but since Lpu
sweets are so delicious
that it gains all my
attention and makes
me forget rest of the
issues regarding food."
A girl named Mona
6

from Lesotho discusses
about the taste and type
of food in her country.
She says"in the
breakfast we generally
hadeggs,toast,cheese,milk,e
tc and in the
lunch/dinner,we
took,pasta,sh,lazzani,e
tc.we ate them with a
fork and a knife.
But at Lpu,we miss our
food since we are non -
vegetarians.
Firstly, I seriously
found it very
challenging to survive
without sh,but since I
have been eating the
Indian food from 3
months or so,I have
started liking it because
its very spicy and
healthy too".
Crispy ,delicious and
mouth -watering
pizzas,of every
avour,be it capsicum,
onion or corn,one could
get them all under the
roofs of the "Kings
pizza",located at the 4th
level of Unimall.
Mr.Alam the owner of
the shop,shares his
views ,he say's"we
serve all types of pizza
of world class quality
."Thincrust" and "pan
pizzas" are ordered
more by the customers.
South Indians like
more of corncheese and
paneer chilly
pizza,while foreign
7

students prefer
'hawain' and 'veggie
blast pizzas'.
The kings pizza
provides a range of
tastes,combos and
toppings .
A newly opened coffee
corner -"Arabica" has
attracted the customers
since its beginning
through the blend of
fresh and aromatic
coffee beans.
One could see
innumerable coffeelovers
at the shop
,ordering cups of hot
coffee,releasing the
stress speacially,at the
end of the day.
The owner says-"the
rst coffee plant was set
up in Arab thats why
the name of the shop is
kept Arabica."
On moving towards the
main gate of Lpu,we get
a one -stop for all
varieties of main -
course food and
Punjabi thalis,as said
by one of the
employees of the
"Campus Cafe.
He say's,"since south
Indians are more in
number,hence they
prefer more of
dosas,idlis,uttapams,no
t only them but the
foreigners across the
world studying at Lpu
also eat indian dishes
,which is a matter of
pride for all the
indians".
LINGUALS
o the
Dlanguages we
speak shape
the way we think? Do
they merely express
thoughts, or do the
structures in languages
without our knowledge
or consent, shape the
very thoughts we wish
to express?
Actually the
importance of language
is essential to every
aspect and interaction
in our everyday lives.
We use language to
inform the people
around us of what we
feel, what we desire,
and to understand the
world around us. And
when it comes to LPU ,
one can nd not only
people across the India
but across the world too
and thus one can hear
every possible
language over here.
For every LPU student
its a matter of great
pleasure of getting an
opportunity to study
with students of all
over the world and
communicate with
them. Its a two way
street where some have
to compromise and
others learn new way of
communication i.e
learn new language
Sharmila shaik of
agriculture depaGurpet
kaurrertment from
Andhra Pradesh and
Vispur Kharibam also
the student of
agriculture department
but from Manipur
,Shravani kumara das
student of BA LLB
from Bengal , Ayushi
jaishwal student of
commerce from
Odhisha, Akansha
Vastava student of
MBA from
Maharashtra , student
of performing arts from
9

Punjab, Poonam
student of BTECH from
uttrakhand, Sushmita
student of MSC from
Himachal (kullu) and
lastly Neha student of
ECE from Assam all
have the same views
about the language that
they being freshers
didn't face any problem
with the language and
communication as each
one of them knows
Hindi and English well
which made their
communication and
interaction easy and
comfortable with other
students and teachers
in LPU.
But things are not like
bed of roses for all, as
some of the students
face a lot of problems
because of not knowing
the basics of HINDI
and thus face huge
difculties on daily
basis.
AKHO student of
political science from
10

Nagaland stated “I have
language problem in
LPU as I don't
understand Hindi, I
know only little bit of
Hindi which is not
enough for me to
interact and
communicate with
others, most of mine
friends are from
different states and so I
interact with them in
English only as
interacting in Hindi is
difcult for me and all
of my friends don't
understand English
therefore language is a
barrier for me”
The problem is not just
conned within the
understanding of
language verbally but
also writing in a
particular language
perfectly is
troublesome for many.
As Sabina parveen
student of education
department from
Kashmir says “ I don't
have any problem with
the language as I can
interact in both English
and Hindi , I have only
one problem and i.e. I
can understand Hindi
but cannot read and
write Hindi.”
But as it is well said
that time heals
everything and teaches
every lesson so many
students who were
facing the problems
with the unknown
languages in intial
stage with the passing
time student managed
learning the very
language and even
some become master in
it.
Bisma student of
zoology from Jammu
&Kashmir and Vidhya
student of MBA from
Karnataka jointly
stated ''When we were
11

freshers we had some
difculties in
communication with
other students in Hindi
as our Hindi was very
poor but as the time
passed we learnt Hindi
and now we are
comfortable in
communicating in
Hindi” and UBA
student of MBA from
Nigeria and Munir Ali
student of BBA also
from Nigeria both faced
the same problem with
the language when they
were freshers,
interaction with some of
the Indian students who
were not so good in
English was very
difcult for them as they
didn't understand what
Indians says in Hindi
but as the time passed
with the time they learnt
a little bit of Hindi and
their interaction with
them become far
comfortable.
As every individual has
its own way of
pronouncing certain
words and due to that at
different parts of world
the
same language with
same rules and
grammar are spoken in
different tterms and this
difference in terms acts
as an interruption in a
successful
communication among
students.
Ra student of BBA from
Afganistan shared “I am
facing problem with the
language as the ascent of
the English language at
mine place is totally
different from the way
English Indians speak”
It's not just ,that
learning of new
language only makes
one's communication
12

etter and smoother
rather it also helps
students to enjoy and
understand the
literature and movies
which are of local
dialects and thus help
one to prosper in
various elds and get
knowledge about
different things.
Pema student of hotel
management from
Bhutan expressed “I
don't face any problem
regarding language in
LPU now as I learnt
Hindi with time and
now due to knowledge
about the hindi as a
language now I enjoy
watching the bollywood
movies a lot”
13

BELIEFS IN LPU
ndia has no state
Ireligion, it is a
secular state. It is
the land where almost
all the major religions
of the world are
practiced by their
respective followers
.And the same is the
case with LPU as the
people from different
religion live happily
and altogether in India
on the similar terms
irrespective of religion
differences all the LPU
students live as a huge
happy family.
Denetly there are
differences in Religion
followed by the
different students but
that do not create any
sort of disturbance
within the relationships
shared by students with
each other and they
enjoy, study and do fun
altogether.
Deepti Garg student
of BBA told “my class
comprise students of
different religion but
that never act as a
barrier within the
conversation we want
to do, rather we all
behave in similar
manner with every
student without
thinking of from which
religion they belong
from “
Students also celebrate
the festivals of
different religions all
together as when it was
diwali even the
muslims burst cracker
in the sports ground
with their hindu
friends so in Holi
Christians also played
with colours and water
not only this but on the
holy eve of Guru
Nanak Jayanti ,group of
friends that
compromises
individuals of all the
14

eligions went to
Amritsar to pray in
Golden Temple and
this clearly depicts that
there is no
differentiation on the
basis of religion in
LPU.
On Friday Muslim
students does their
religious customs in the
college primises only
while on the occasion
of Eid a special
arrangement for
praying was done in
boys hostels and girl
hostels in order to
respect the muslim
religion and their
festivities.
For many students its a
matter of great
exploration as its give
them exposure to know
about the different
religions , their
traditionalities, their
beliefs .As Usman khan
of Agriculture
department stated
“being in Lpu was a
entirely perception
changing experience for
15

me as making friends
from different
religions and knowing
about them in deep
,just changed my way
of thinking and I
reliased at the end all
the religion teach us the
same lessons”
Student named
Manpreet shared his
experience of visiting
one of his muslim
friend on the occasion
EID ,he nd the festival
full of joy and
happiness and added
that the yummy and
mouthwatering dishes
offered to him by his
friend's mother was the
best part of his visit
.According to him “It
was a rst time he had
ever such a tasty
siwaiyaan.
Whether it is Diwali or
Christmas or whether it
is Eid or Guru Nanak
jayanti , there is
holiday on the festivals
of all the religions and
there is no difference in
it this clearly shows
that in this university
there is no scope of
religious based
discrimination
In LPU no
discrimination is done
on the basis of religion
differences .As Saima
16

Hussain of CSE shared
“before coming to lpu I
was having a wrong
concept that as the
university is present in
Punjab so only Sikhism
would be given the
whole importance and
there would be
chances of
uncomfortableness
that i would have
to face but after
being the part of
the LPU all of my
preconceived
improper notions
got clariried and I
am happy to its
part of Lovely
where all the
students, all the
religions are
treated in equal
terms”
Thus LPU students
have no ill feelings
for other religion
students rather
they love being the
part and making
friends ,students from
different religions as
they have certain strong
desires to know about
the traditions and
specications other
religions posses
ATTIRES IN LPU
Clothes exhibit
one's cultures
,personality,
,ethinicity and much
more.
Lpu is a platform that
witnesses a lot about
various cultures from
not only India but also
from the rest parts of
the world.
Let's have a glance at
some of the prominent
outts at Lpu.
1. Manipur-The
Jeweled Land ,one of
the” Seven Sisters” is
blessed with handloom
and weaving traditions.
The costumes are very
colourful and vibrant.
Many Manipuri
students could be seen
in their cultural attire
like Innaphi ,Phanek
,Mayek Naibi during
fests organized by Lpu.
2. The dressing of the”
Heaven of the earth”
are as beautiful as its
place. Kashmir is
popular throughout the
world for its
embroidery and
handworks on rich
fabrics like silk/wool.
Pherans and burkhas
/hijab with few
ornaments are often
seen worn by the
Kashmiri girls in the
campus.
manually weaved
dresses .The
Himachalis wear
lengthy kurtas , salwars
during festive
occasions.
4. Kerala is known for
its simplicity and
serenity. White/cream
colours are considered
holy and so during
festivals like Onam
,girls get up in
“Mundu Neriyathu”
.Muslims of Kerela put
18

on long purdah in dark
blue/black shades over
their costumes.
5. There are several
ethnic groups of
Nigeria studying at
Lpu.Though being
updated by modern
dressing trends ,they
often wear their
regional costumes.
Babban Riga are worn
by Nigerian Muslims
specially on Fridays
which is considered
holy .6. Zambia-rare
but unique.Lpu gets
opportunity to know
about the exotic
dressing variations of
Africa. Zambians are
seen in “Chitenge” –a
special ocassion
garment .For them
clean and pressed
clothing is very
important.
7. Bhutanis have a
unique get up with
distinctive patterns
demonstrating their
rich culture.They are
generally choosy in
terms of color and
fabric, often seen at
Lpu in their regional
attire.
