Replenish Pantry Shelves
Annual Scouting for Food Drive Yields 193 Bags of
Groceries for Pantry Shelf
By J.D. O’Gara
On Saturday, November 12,
2016, members of Holliston’s
Boy Scout Troop 14 worked
hard to collect items and sort
them for their annual Scouting
for Food Drive in Holliston.
Holliston Boy Scouts from Troop 14 were abuzz the morning of
November 12, carrying and sorting food for the Holliston Pantry
Shelf in their annual Scouting for Food drive.
“Our council, the Knox
Trail Council, does this, as
part of a national drive,” says
David Ring, Committee Chair.
He explains that the Scouts
have a turkey roast at the Holliston
Sportsman’s Association
each year, and in the morning,
they distribute flyers announcing
the food collection for the
Holliston Pantry Shelf. The
following weekend, they collect.
“The Scouts stay Friday,
and Saturday morning (November
5), we distributed 700
flyers to a number of different
neighborhoods in Holliston,”
says Ring. “We’re the only Boy
Scout troop in Holliston that
does this, and I believe we’ve
done it for the past 10 or so
years.”
In total, the Boy Scouts collected
about 193 bags of food
for the Holliston Pantry Shelf,
taking the items back and then
sorting and placing them on
shelves. Boys also checked ex-
First Night Trail Walk
New Year’s Eve Event Brings Together Neighbors,
Supports Rail Trail
The annual First Night
Trail Walk, a fundraiser for the
Friends of the Holliston Trails
(www.hollistontrails.org), celebrates
its fourth year this year,
with the walk beginning at 5
p.m. The children’s walk will
start from Cross Street, while
the Main walk will begin from
Blair Square, says Ed Daniels,
of the Friends of the Holliston
Trails.
“It’s a free event. We like to
pitch it as an early New Year’s
Eve celebration, to see all your
neighbors before you watch
the ball drop in the night,” says
Daniels, who says he estimates
that 1,500 people came last
year. In fact, Holliston in Bloom,
who hosted one of 22 fire pits
last year and handed out cider,
handed out 650 cups of it last
year.
Daniels says that absolutely
anyone can host a fire pit.
“We want citizens to know
they can host a fire pit along the
way,” says Daniels. “Community
groups are doing it to participate,
but they’re also doing it to raise
funds for the trail. But neighborhood
groups are also welcome.
Anyone who wants a fire pit can
participate by hosting a free fire
pit along the way and essentially
can give out s’mores or hot cider
or anything else they feel is appropriate,
or just say hello to
their friends.” There is no cost
Any money raised from the
New Year’s Eve celebration will
benefit The Friends of the Holliston
Trails, which in turn supports
improvements on the trail.
The group would love to spread
the word that volunteers are extremely
welcome.
“The Holliston Rail Trail is
used by many people, but I don’t
think a lot of citizens know that
we would love their assistance as
part of the group, because the
small number of events we do
each year would be a lot easier to
run if we had more volunteers as
part of the group,” says Daniels,
who says that just a skeleton crew
of about 4-5 people run events,
and only about 10 members regularly
attend meetings.
“We’re welcoming of people
joining the group and using their
skills to assist us in any way they
can,” says Daniels. “Volunteers
would be everything from people
who have experience with websites
or who would like to get involved
with participating in our
two events, which is the first night
event and also the 5K trail run.
We try to do events that don’t
take a lot of heavy lifting. This
trail walk, for example, could
be done to a crazy expense, or it
Says ‘tis the season
LOSE 20-40 lbs.
could be what it has been, which
is simply, people come out and
walk the trail. It’s a pretty easy
job.”
Most of the expenditures
made by the Friends of the Holliston
Trails has supported safety
on the trails, such as crosswalks
and signage at the cross walks
and railings on the bridges. The
group also recently contributed
$11,000 toward surface materials.
In the future, improvements
will be made on the part of the
trail that was recently acquired,
up to the Sherborn line. That
will include improvements to the
8-Arch Bridge area, says Daniels.
“That whole 2-mile stretch of
land that needs to be improved
also includes the 8-Arch Bridge,”
he says. “The Friends of the Holliston
Trails is a support in the
Trails Committee and the work
that they do.”
The group has also been in
a committee that is working on
developing plans to make Blair
Square into more of a park, with
overall improvements to that
area, says Daniels.
“Bobby Blair, Holliston in
Bloom and the Marigold Project
has done a terrific job over
there of creating that space,”
says Daniels, who says that the
bigger project will ultimately improve
parking, lighting and the
surface of the rail trail to develop
the area into more of a gathering
space. All of that, he says, is really
still in the development and
planning stage.
You can find out more becoming
a member of the Friends of
the Holliston Trails by looking
for Friends of the Holliston Trails
on Facebook, or by visiting www.
hollistontrails.org. Just want to
make a donation? Both of those
sites, says Daniels, are equipped
with easy donate links.
Overall, says Daniels, who
sells real estate, features like the
Holliston Rail Trail “add value
to the town. I notice it in my clients.
They love the community
feel and all the different activities
that go on.”

families in the region year round,
not just during the holidays. Sullivan
and his partner, Richard
Timmons, along with a handful
of volunteers (15 part-time), do
their best to give hope to about
900 families a year. In total, they
put in 2,500 hours of volunteer
incurring all costs (about
$12,000 a year), so that 100% of
donations will benefit those who
need it.
“I think the need grows every
year,” says Sullivan, who says he
doesn’t see things getting much
better, after three decades. In
particular, he says, “The homeless
are a lost group. There are
millions of homeless children
living in the U.S. right now. No
one talks about that. That’s a big
problem, and there’s no shelter
space anywhere.”
In 2015, the foundation distributed
a total of over $50K to
needy local families, with $9,450
toward rent/mortgage alone and
another $9,720 in family support
and $10,586 toward other family
needs, which range from utility
bills to packed school backpacks.
In fact, in looking at the numbers
for the past 30 years, Sullivan
says he was surprised to find the
Santa Foundation paid almost a
half a million dollars ($487,774)
in electric bills. In 30 years, the
foundation supported 1,300
people with oil or rent, and
it provided 482,427 gifts
to 73,095 people in need
during the holiday season.
Last year alone, the Santa
Foundation supported 861
families, including 5,683
individuals with 52,852
gifts estimated (at about $20
per gift) to total $1,057,704.
And those families aren’t
just Franklin families. Immediately
local to Franklin,
in which the Santa Foundation
helps 161 families, the
foundation supports:
• 71 families in Norfolk
• 69 families in Medway
• 51 families in Plainville
• 50 families in Bellingham
• 48 families in Milford
• 47 families in Blackstone
• 39 families in Wrentham
• 29 families in Millis
• 15 families in Holliston,
among others.
“People are under-employed
more than they’re unemployed,”
says Sullivan, who says the foundation
helps lot of single mothers.
He recalls seeing a local post
office job opening with a salary
of $32,000 a year. “If you’re
a one-income family,” he says,
“How can you live on that?
It’s scary when you think that
people are one lost paycheck
away from being on the street,
and that happens a lot,” he says.
“We’re the greatest country in
the world. It doesn’t make sense
we should have so many homeless
people.”
Sullivan says he doesn’t buy
putting any stigma on being poor
“If they’re poor, they’re poor.
Help them,” says the father and
grandfather, who sees it as his
God-given mission to help.
“The only thing I want from
these people is – let us help
The Santa Foundation, in its 30
years, has supported 73,095
people in need with Christmas
gifts, but has also helped with oil,
rent, electricity bills and other
emergency needs. All donations to
the foundation go toward aiding
needy families. This holiday,
individuals and businesses can
help by putting up or fulfilling a
such as this one located at The
Postal Center in Millis.
them. If I help them and it gives
the parents a little hope, it can
change the outlook of the family.”
Sullivan says he wants struggling
families to maintain their
dignity.
“If they don’t have dignity,
they have no confidence. If
they don’t have confidence, they
aren’t going to get a job,” he
says. He remembers one abused
woman who’d fled her husband
and came to the Santa Foundation,
ashamed to ask for help.
“She was homeless … her head’s
down, she’s embarrassed,” says
Sullivan. The same woman came
in two weeks later with a thankyou
note, thrilled to have a job
at McDonald’s. Later, she came
back again, reporting on having
a better job.
“Who can change the economic
future of that family? The
kids? No. The parents. Give the
parents hope,” says Sullivan, who
this month will take his foundation
a step further and realize
a dream he’s had for 20 years,
that of opening a halfway
house for a homeless family.
“It’s called Debbie’s’ Place,
after my daughter, who died of
cancer,” he says. “We’re working
on finding a place, and we’ll
move in one family and have
an idea of what they need from
being homeless to being self-sufficient
a year later. We’ll monitor
the family along the way, with
goals for the month, and a year
later, someone else will come in,”
he says. Sullivan explains, “If I
don’t do this, I’ll feel like I’m a
failure. This is important to me,
something I believe God tasked
me with. Any of this stuff we do,
it’s like our job. That’s all.”
Sullivan says the Santa Foundation’s
volunteers don’t want
accolades for what they’re doing,
either. “The other day, I’m trying
to impress on them how great
they are, and they just kept working.
They don’t care about that.
You just do your job.”
Due to space limitations, the
Santa Foundation cannot accept
more volunteers, but Sullivan
suggests that if local businesses or
groups want to help, they might
consider putting up an Angel
Tree, which are decorated with
tags that note Christmas wish
list items for needy people. “We
give them the tags, they put up
the tree in the store, and we come
and pick up the gifts. Individuals
could sponsor a family,” he says.
As of publication, Santa Foundation
trees were located at Dean
College, The Postal Center in
Franklin and Millis, Twin Shears
Salon, King Street Deli, British
Beer Company, Norfolk Credit
Union, Middlesex Bank, BJ’s,
Thermo-Fischer Scientific, Team
Fitness, Isabella’s in Millis, Dry
Cleaning Pros., Franklin Health
& Rehab, James Roadside Café
and Whole Foods Market.
In fact, Sullivan says the foundation
gets a good amount of
support from local small businesses.
“Our sponsors, in my
book, are heroes. When you help
someone you’re never going to
meet, that’s amazing.”
There are fundraisers as well,
such as an annual golf tournament
and holiday calendar raffle.
Some sponsors put together fundraisers,
such as Norfolk Community
League, which sponsors
an annual Jingle Bell Run at the
it also gets together the
Anthony’s on the Green’s
Mike Ficco will provide all of the
food for Pasta with Santa free of
charge, and photos of children
with Santa will also be taken at
no charge by members of the
Holliston Lions Club. Santa will
appoint special elves (local student
members of the Holliston
Pantry Shelf board of directors)
to help with children, and those
students will also enlist Holliston
classmates to help with setup and
cleaning for the event.
“I’ve done (Pasta with Santa)
for all three years that I’ve had
Anthonys’, but I’ve been doing
things for the food pantry forever,
so that’s second nature to
me,” says Ficco. “I just think that
everybody could use a little bit of
help. The holiday season is tough
on people, and it’s easy to give a
little bit. It doesn’t cost me a lot,
I have the space to do it, and I
enjoy it.”
Diane Regan, working closely
with Sylvia Stickney, is chairing
this year’s Pasta with Santa, in
which all members of the Holliston
Pantry Shelf are involved,
says Bradford.
The Holliston Pantry Shelf
has recently sent out its annual
fundraising letter, and in early
February, will embark on its biggest
annual fundraising event, the
Souper Bowl, which enlists local
restaurateurs and local public figures
to help present a warm, inviting
way for Holliston residents
and friends to support the Pantry
Shelf.
“The town of Holliston, the
people and businesses and organizations
in this town, are
extremely generous,” says Bradford.
“I’m just speaking from my
experience, but I’ve never seen a
town as generous as this one.”
Feline Dental Disease
By Richard Duckett, DVM,
MS, The Family Pet Hospital
Dental health often falls low
on a pet owner’s list of health
priorities. Many owners simply
do not realize the impact improper
oral healthcare can have
on their pet’s overall health. Even
if cats could brush their teeth,
plaque and tartar will build up
over time leading to gingivitis
and, ultimately, periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease, the
most common disease in cats,
is a painful condition leading to
bleeding gums, bad breath, food
aversion, behavioral changes and
tooth loss.
More severe and potentially
life-threatening complications
arise when periodontal disease
allows bacteria into the bloodstream,
resulting in possible damage
to the heart, kidneys, liver
and lungs. Per the American Veterinary
Dental Society, nearly 70
percent of cats show signs of oral
disease by age three.
In addition to periodontal
disease, cats may suffer from a
condition known as Feline Resorptive
Lesions, also known as
“TRs” (Tooth Resorption). In
this condition, tooth enamel is
Thank You, Holliston!
Dear Editor,
On behalf of the Holliston
like to recognize and thank
am grateful for their wisdom and
lost due to overactive cells breaking
down the enamel, resulting
in nerve exposure and tooth
destruction. For many cats, this
painful condition is only detected
during a dental cleaning with the
utilization of dental x-rays. Approximately
30 percent of feline
dental problems occur below the
gum line, making x-rays a necessity
for a comprehensive treatment
plan.
While it is easy to recognize
pain associated with a broken leg,
what about a painful tooth?
Typically, cats do not stop
eating when they have a painful
tooth. Cats often gulp commercial
cat food rather than chewing
it, allowing them to hide dental
pain. In fact, cats are quite adept
at hiding pain and illness. If your
cat has a resorptive lesion or
periodontal disease, your cat is
in pain. Only proper dental work
can fully alleviate their pain.
Feline dental problems require
anesthesia for treatment. A
complete dental care plan, under
anesthesia, includes a thorough
dental cleaning via ultrasonic
scaling above and below the gum
line, polishing, digital dental radiography
and extractions, if required.
Preventative dental care at
home is also instrumental in
maintaining your cat’s dental
health. Several products are
available which promote healthy,
the Stroll even better.
And, of course, thank you to
I Can See Clearly Now, the FAT is Gone!
To successfully drop those
excess pounds, 46-year-old Tom
McAullife knew he needed a defined
weight loss program. Between
his hectic work schedule
as president of WMRC Radio,
1490 AM, in Milford, and an active
home life with his wife and
three teenage sons, a clear plan
was the only answer. He was
already familiar with New England
Fat Loss as an advertiser
on his station and from friends
who shared their successful results.
In July, he and his wife
joined at the Hopkinton location.
“I needed a program to follow,”
McAullife said. “I have all
this exercise equipment in the
basement, but without someone
like Dr. Johns and his staff,
it wasn’t going to happen. I
can be extremely disciplined
if you give me a road map.”
McAullife made the right choice.
After only 27 days on the program
he lost 30 pounds. The
bonus, the effect on how his
new menu plan fueled his body.
“By the time I got literally seven
days into it, I could feel my metabolism
on fire,” McAullife said.
“I felt like whatever I was eating
was getting burned up, the
water was getting washed out.”
McAullife admits shedding the
weight was the initial goal, but
he also joined NEFL to influence
other aspects of his life. His
demanding schedule promoted
poor eating habits, and he felt
a loss of control. Before joining
NEFL, his body took charge,
driving his actions, attitude and
even sleep habits. After only one
month, everything changed.
“What I really wanted most of all
is clarity,” McAullife said. “With
a busy family and stressful, crazy
work schedule, and feeling lousy
because of eating bad food every
day, I felt like I had lost clarity
and organization in my head.”
Since his success with New England
Fat Loss, McAullife experiences
a good night’s rest, free of
previous sleep apnea and snoring
and wakes at 5 a.m. to prepare
the day’s schedules. A restful
sleep is even more vital when
approximately 230,000 people
rely on him and his station to
stay informed with their local
news, weather, traffic, music,
religious and consumer programming
and sports coverage.
“I feel so good, it is simply
amazing. The only thing I can
point to is because of my experience
with New England
Fat Loss,” McAullife said.
Take control today at one of
New England Fat Loss’ convenient
locations: 22 South Street,
Custom Stone for Your Home and Business
Onyx Marble & Granite
By Deborah Burke Henderson,
Contributing Writer
When you walk onto the recently
renovated lot at Onyx
Marble & Granite in Framingham,
you’ll see an amazing
selection of huge, natural and
engineered stone slabs gleaming
in the sunlight. They’re all
waiting to be transformed into
unique creations for residential
or commercial projects.
Next month, owners Jose
Moraes and his wife, Poliana,
celebrate Onyx’s twentieth anniversary.
Onyx is one of New England’s
premier custom fabrication
and installation resources,
and its showroom is open to
homeowners, contractors and
designers. The company’s range
of work includes kitchen countertops,
bathroom vanity tops,
fireplaces, Jacuzzis, and tub surrounds;
all of which can bring a
vibrant new look to your home.
“When you work with Onyx,
you will benefit from the expertise
of our stone fabrication and
installation professionals,” Jose
said. “Each employee has, on average,
more than 10 years of experience
in the business. If you’re
unsure about any details of your
project, our knowledgeable staff
can guide you through the decision-making
process.”
Jose worked with countertops
for more than 12 years before
taking full administration
of Onyx. During that time, he
learned all aspects of the business
from measuring templates
to cutting and polishing stone,
working closely with customers
on site to ascertain their needs,
and ensuring that the installation
of the finished product was completed
successfully. Starting his
own company was the next logical
step for him to take to utilize
his business degree and his love
for working with stone.
“I like designing things,” Jose
added. “Getting the client’s ideas
and making that a reality drives
my passion for the work. It is
very satisfying to see the finished
product and hear from our clients
how happy they are with the
results.”
Jose and Poliana work with
their team of 16 professionals
to offer customers top-quality
stonework, a wide range of custom
stone choices, and a timely
fabrication and installation process.
They strive to educate their
clients about the available materials
in all price ranges, from
natural stone products of marble
and granite to Quartz, an engineered
stone, which is a blend of
93 percent natural quartz and
resin.
The Onyx team prides itself
on always providing unmatched
customer service. Their business
has weathered good times and
tough economic periods during
these 20 years, and that is, itself,
a tremendous demonstration of
the commitment to their industry
and to their passion of providing
their customers the very best experience.
“The best thing we can do for
our customers is to ask questions
and help them think through
their project as a whole to make
sure each detail works with the
others,” Jose added. “People usually
update their kitchens only
once or twice in a lifetime, and
we want to make sure they get
the results they desire.”
Onyx has consistently received
a “Super Service Award”
from Angie’s List for the past four
years and takes pride in receiving
a significant number of five-star
reviews on Yelp and houzz, a
website and online community
about architecture, interior design,
decorating and home improvement.
Visit the Onyx Marble &
Granite website at www.onyxgranite.com
to check out their
easy-to-use custom “visualizer”
tool where you can interchange
flooring, cabinetry, countertops
and backsplash materials in a
virtual kitchen, view numerous
customer testimonials or take
advantage of their “live chat”
feature.
The Onyx showroom is conveniently
located at 93 Beaver
Street in Framingham. Showroom
hours are Monday through
Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday
from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
After-hour showings are available
by appointment.
Whether you are looking to
update the interior of your home
or business, give this top-rated,
family-owned business an opportunity
to meet your needs and
exceed your expectations. Call
(508) 620-0775 for your free inhome
or in-store estimate.
Jose and Poliana enjoy being
part of the Metrowest community
and have lived here for 10
years. They reside in Ashland
with their three children.
project because it creates oneof-a-kind
handmade quilts and
lap robes for men and women
undergoing cancer treatments.”
Indeed, since 2003, the Power
Trends in Home Design
By Doug Masters
Design Tech Innovations
We are in an age of technology.
The tech world is constantly
evolving these days--just when
you think they’ve done it all,
there’s a new app you can install
on your phone that makes life
a little easier. Rewind to forty
years ago-- computers and high
tech gadgets were just starting to
take off. Anyone from the 70’s
remembers PONG, one of the
first home video games. Now, the
technology has evolved so much
that you can now send a message
to somebody on the other
side of the world in a matter of
seconds. How cool is that? In
our industry of remodeling and
design, we have been able to
benefit from these technological
advancements as well. Here’s a
look at some cool technology innovations
that have improved the
design and remodeling industry.
Design Software
Home improvement shows
are all the rage right now, and
one of the star features is the
computer rendering of the proposed
designs. It’s incredible to
see a designer’s vision in striking
detail in a video rendering and
then see that vision come to life.
While there are certainly some
embellishments on the renderings
you see on TV (many of
those programs are created just
for the TV world), in reality,
software used by most architects
and design build firms is coming
close to matching what you see
on slickly produced TV shows.
One outstanding example is
Chief Architect. While not recommended
as a DIY software
(although their website begs to
differ), this is a product used by
many local firms. Chief Architect
Software is computer aided
design software for the home design
and building industry. Chief
Architect was originally released
way back in 1992, but in the last
few years, improvements have
made it much more user friendly,
and the graphics rendering ability
of the product is outstanding.
Gone are the days of hand
drawn blue prints where design
changes can take multiple meetings
and weeks to deliver. Once
a structure is built as a 3D model
in Chief Architect, then moving
walls, windows, doors and
interior design elements such
as furniture and lighting can be
done real time during meetings
with clients. This literally saves
months of work during the design
and development phase of
a project.
Chief Architect covers all aspects
of design from construction
and framing documents,
cabinetry and millwork, to interior
design elements, paint colors,
counters, flooring, and even
furniture. Designers can import
custom items and add them to
the design for a realistic vision of
your project. It is truly changing
the design world.
Smart Phones
The mainstream introduction
of smart phones in the late
2000s brought forth even more
improvements for our industry.
Even something as simple as
the built-in camera and ability
to send a picture instantly on a
smart phone has made managing
construction infinitely more
efficient. Project foremen can
collaborate with customers and
designers who cannot be on site
“real time” when they need an
answer in order to keep a job
moving.
Moving to applications, there
are great new visual tools to envision
what your home will look
like with new siding and a new
color, or what a paint color might
look like on your walls. It is as
simple as snapping a few pictures
and letting the app do the work!
JamesHardie, manufacturer
of the #1 ranked cement siding
in the USA, has teamed with a
company called Hover. This application
will provide accurate
measurements and a rendering
of a home. This helps siding
companies provide accurate
budgets and a sneak peek at what
your home will look like with new
JamesHardie siding.
Production teams in the field
can install measuring applications
that will help generate materials
lists, assist with framing
plans, calculate angles or room
dimensions, and more.
And of course, there is the
flashlight app on almost every
phone these days. Simple, and
used almost every day!
Online Resources
Remember buying magazines
and marking pages or cutting out
pictures when planning a home
project? Well, maybe not if you
are under 30! Today, planning
your project starts online. From
finding a design build firm, to
creating idea books with inspiration
photos, to researching appliances,
furniture and other
decorative finishes, and everything
in between-- everything
you need is at your fingertips online.
As with design software, online
research and shopping saves
lots of time and streamlines the
design process.
If you are planning a home
improvement project or to build
a new home, one of the best websites
is HOUZZ.COM. Houzz is
a website and online community
about architecture, interior design
and decorating, landscape
design and home improvement.
The Houzz platform and mobile
apps[2] feature photos, articles,
product recommendations, and a
user forum. On Houzz, you can
browse over 12 million pictures,
find a designer or contractor, and
shop for finish materials for your
home. Finding inspiration photos
and sharing them with your
design time will make collaboration
a breeze and will help your
designers to understand your vision!
Online Collaboration
Let’s face it, everybody is overbooked.
Work, kids, gym, school,
church, friends … when do you
ever get off the “treadmill of
life”? For many, weekends are
reserved for kids’ sports or recitals.
Nights? You’ve got kids’ practices!
It’s hard to carve out time
to focus on a major home project--but
it is critically important.
When I’m dealing with a client
who cannot focus on a project or
invest a little of their time and
energy, it’s a red flag. Those are
the folks who rush through everything
and then end up complaining
because they think the project
wasn’t planned to their liking.
Doug Masters
Fortunately, technology is
helping solve this problem. With
Go To Meeting and other live
meeting software, presentations
can be done from anywhere at
any time. This makes a world of
difference during the design and
development phase of a project,
and it ensures all parties are
on the same page. Sometimes,
emails and calls are just not
enough to solve problems and
collaborate on design details.
Speaking of emails, you’ll
also see a major reduction in the
amount of email used as online
collaboration becomes the standard
of the industry for project
management. While this has already
happened in many industries
with larger corporations, the
design and remodeling industry
is just now starting to embrace
this great technology. A perfect
example is the Microsoft 365
platform. With this product, each
project or customer has an online
“newsfeed” where all communications
and files are stored.
The communications are much
like a Facebook newsfeed, so it
is easy to track all communications
among a team of designers,
project managers, and customers
and refer back to the feed later if
there are questions.
Clearly, the technology advancements
over the past ten
years have drastically improved
the design-build industry. We
can’t wait to see what the next
ten years may hold!
Holliston Fundraiser Impacts
Hundreds and Saves Lives in Uganda
Christa exchanges ideas with peer innovators at the Ashoka
Changemaker Bootcamp in Nairobi, Kenya
Three years ago Holliston
Alumni Christa Preston (nee
Numbers) and Kate Condon
traveled to Uganda and cofounded
KultureCity’s embraceKulture,
to combat the
negative stigma and abuse towards
children with developmental
disabilities in Uganda. Last
year they held their first major
fundraiser in Holliston with an
event called Experience Africa.
Attendees were treated to a taste
of life in Uganda with drum performances
and a raffle of crafts
and art from Uganda.
“We were moved to tears by
the incredible support of our
community. We never expected
so many people to come out for
the event. The Town Hall was
packed,” said co-founder Christa
Preston.
The event raised over $14,000
in support of the work of KultureCity’s
embraceKulture. These
funds went directly to support
programs in Uganda and resulted
in the identification of 40
previously hidden children, improved
the special needs education
of over 120 children, spread
awareness to 50,000 community
members and much more.
“We utilize many of the principles
followed by technology
start ups, including developing
new innovations. But we believe
understanding local culture and
context is equally as important,”
said Preston.
Kate training children at the St. Ursula Special School on inclusive rugby
Remember Last Winter?
This year embraceKulture
released their ekulture solution,
which uses mobile phones to empower
users to spread awareness
and become advocates. Their solution
was recognized as a top innovation
by Ashoka and featured
by USAID and MIT.
“We are hosting our second
annual fundraising event in Holliston
in December. We hope the
community will come out again
to support,” said Preston. “I’m
proud of this unique bond and
temporary bridge between Holliston
and Uganda.”
This year’s event is a Benefit
Concert featuring pianist Tony
DeBlois, who is blind and has
Autism and Savant Syndrome.
Tony is a graduate of the
Berklee School of Music and
has performed concerts around
the world to much acclaim. CBS
featured his life’s story on a made
for TV movie called “Journey
of the Heart.” He is able to
play over 8,000 songs from
memory alone.
The event will be held on
Thursday, December 1 from 6-9
PM at Holliston High School.
Charles River Chorale to Present
“Home for the Holidays”
Concert for Chorale and Small Orchestra, December 10 at
Medway High School
On Saturday, December 10,
2016, the Charles River Chorale
will present its annual holiday
concert. Accompanied by
a small orchestra and harp, the
Chorale will perform at Medway
High School starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Charles River Children’s
Choir will also perform.
Ticket prices at the door are
$18 for adults, $15 for seniors
and full-time students, and $10
for children under 12. A special
family-of-four price of $50 is
available for two adults and two
dependent children.
Under the direction of Ashley
Nelson, the Chorale will first
present Randall Thompson’s
Frostiana: Seven Country Songs,
putting seven of Robert Frost’s
poems to music. This piece will
be accompanied by the small
orchestra. The collection was
originally performed for the Bicentennial
of Amherst, Massachusetts
in 1959. They will also
highlight the skills of Susan Fortin,
Assistant Music Director and
piano accompanist.
Other pieces will include
“I’ll Be Home for Christmas,”
“Homeward Bound,” “Bring
Him Home (Les Miserables),”
“Home (Beauty and the Beast),”
“Somewhere in My Memory,”
and “Home for the Holidays.”
The Children’s Choir’s pieces
are yet to be announced. The
children will also help lead the
traditional sing-along, and will
be accompanied by Everard
Huggins.
The Chorale’s annual Silent
Auction fund-raiser will be held
as usual, featuring about fifty
items donated by local businesses
and members. The Chorale also
raises funds through its program
and adbook, which features local
businesses, and a raffle specifically
targeted to earn funds for
the Chorale’s outreach to the
community. In recent years,
the outreach funds have been
directed toward the Children’s
Choir.
Medway High School is a new
venue for the Chorale, which
performed primarily at Millis
High School for thirty of its first
thirty-one seasons.
The Chorale draws membership
from throughout the Charles
River Valley, and performs two
major concerts per year. It is
available for other events as well.
The group hopes to continue to
expand its membership, audience
reach, skills, and repertory
for many years to come.
Sports
All Around Athlete Emma Guiccione
an Asset to Holliston Soccer
By Christopher Tremblay
During the winter and spring
seasons, Holliston’s Emma Guiccione
is a short distance runner
for the track teams, but during
the fall, the senior suits up for the
soccer team as a forward. While
she has a passion for both sports,
her thought process about the
two are totally different.
“I began playing soccer
through a clinic when I was in
kindergarten. There, I found
that I liked the speed of the
game, while being on a team,”
Guiccione said. “I didn’t begin
running track until my freshman
year, but I found that, as a runner,
it connected to my playing
soccer. They are both different
sports; track is individual while
soccer you have to rely more on
your teammates, but I like both
aspects.”
Having teammates alongside
her on the field, the senior believes
that soccer is most likely an
easier sport for her to take part
in.
“Soccer probably comes easier,
as I have teammates to back
me up,” she said. “In track there
is no real support from the others
in your event, it’s just yourself,
and everything is all up to you.”
Having made the Holliston
varsity soccer team as a freshman
allowed the now senior to learn
and grow with her teammates
through the years. As a freshman,
Guiccione got to experience
varsity level play with three
other freshmen (Megan Cox,
Izzy Getchell and Emilia Porter).
Not only has the foursome been
playing together for the past four
years, but they have also come to
learn each others tendencies on
the field.
“Making the varsity team as
a freshman was cool, and having
senior role models to learn from
was great,” she said. “It was also
good to have three other girls my
age on the team, so that we could
grow together. Now that I’m a
senior I’m trying to install those
same values that they taught me
four years ago.”
Last fall, Guiccione had a rare
title bestowed upon her by Holliston
girl’s soccer Coach Brielle
Chase – she was named co-captain
of the team as a junior.
“She’s a fantastic all around
athlete,” the Panther Coach said.
“Being named a captain two
years in a row is a rare accomplishment,
but she has definitely
earned it.”
Over the past two years, the
Tri-Valley League Track All Star Emma Guiccione enjoys the team
play of soccer as much as she does the individual sport of running.
Although she is quick to credit her teammates with her success, her
coach credits her skill to the athlete’s personal development.
outside midfielder for the Panthers
was able to slip a couple of
goals past the opposition’s goalie,
but this year things have totally
changed. With still a handful of
games remaining on the schedule,
Guiccione is currently the
team’s leading scorer with 11
goals and 5 assists. The reasoning
behind this year’s success – moving
her higher in the field (from
outside midfielder to forward)
where she doesn’t have as much
defensive responsibilities and can
roam the field freely.
“She really wanted to try it
out (moving forward), and it has
worked out well,” Chase said.
“Her versatility has improved
while she is still defending well.”
Guiccione doesn’t believe that
her sudden increase in goal scoring
is because of her improved
versatility; instead she believes
it’s her teammates.
“This is my second year playing
with sophomore Alex Panaggio,
who is already committed to
Syracuse – she makes me a better
player,” Guiccione said. “Her
speed is definitely faster, and she
has technical foot skills that have
developed me into the athlete
that I am today. Playing against
quality athletes in club soccer has
also helped, but it’s mainly attributed
to Alex’s play on the field.”
Still the Coach disagrees.
“I’ve been coaching this team
for the past two years now, and
Emma has definitely improved
her game,” Chadsey said. “She
is making better decisions, her
shot has improved and she’s setting
up others. She has been able
to harness her speed and use it
when necessary and has become
more confident in herself; she’s
the whole package.”
During her three years with
the Holliston varsity squad,
Guiccione has been able to take
part in two Division 2 South
Tournaments. In her freshman
campaign the Panthers fell in
overtime to Notre Dame Academy
in the Quarter Finals and
last fall Holliston lost to Scituate
in the first round. The senior
captain and her teammates will
get one more chance to go for a
title, but when she walks off the
field for the final time as a Panther,
it quiet possibly could be her
last time playing soccer.
“In college, I’ll do one or the
other, not both. At this time, I’m
not sure which one it will be, but
it will be something I figure out
later,” she said. “It will all depend
on how things go the rest of this
season as well as what I do in
winter and spring track.”
Having been named to the
Tri-Valley League Track All Star
team since her freshman season,
soccer may soon be a thing of
the past for this Holliston athlete.
And if it is, Guiccione is hoping
to go out with a bang.
New Wrestling Coach Is No Stranger to Holliston
By KEN HAMWEY
Paul Capobianco has stepped
down as Holliston High’s wrestling
coach after directing programs
at Ashland and Holliston
for 30 years. His replacement is
his son, Michael, who assisted his
father for the last three years at
Holliston.
“I worked closely with my
dad as his assistant coach,’’ the
27-year-old Capobianco said.
“I wrestled in high school and
college, but I learned a lot from
my father. He taught me how to
set meaningful goals and how to
achieve them. He also taught me
to be patient and to care about
how young wrestlers are progressing.’’
The new coach inherits a
team that won only two meets
last year. Holliston had only eight
boys wrestling and was forced to
forfeit 4-5 matches in different
weight classes. This season, however,
Capobianco expects a turnout
of about 20-plus candidates.
“We’ve got some boys coming
back who skipped last year,’’
Capobianco said. “I’m looking
at increased numbers. There was
some discussion about us becoming
a co-op team, but that’s not in
our plans. We want to keep Holliston
a separate program.’’
Capobianco, who wrestled at
Ashland High and Mercyhurst
College (Erie, Pa.), has lost only
two boys to graduation and has
some experienced returnees, including
senior Sam Goldberg.
“Sam is our best wrestler,’’ Capobianco
said. “He was second at
the sectionals last year, third in
the states and fifth at all-states.
He won 40-plus matches. He’s a
bulldog, always coming at his opponent
intensely, and he’s skilled
and talented.’’
Capobianco expects defending
champ Norton to once again
be dominant, and he views Hopkinton
as a formidable squad
along with Ashland, which has
capable returnees and is no
longer in a co-op venture with
Keefe Tech. “With our participation
numbers up, we’ll be better,
because we won’t be forfeiting
matches in four weight classes,’’
he said.
Capobianco is no stranger
to what it takes to experience
success in wrestling. He was a
Tri Valley League all-star in
wrestling and baseball and also
played football. A 2007 graduate
of Ashland, he finished his mat
career as a sectional champ as
a junior, a sectional finalist as a
senior and he finished in the top
eight as a senior in the all-state
tourney.
Capobianco was a plus-.400
hitter in baseball, playing centerfield.
A wide receiver and safety
in football, he helped the Clockers
defeat Medway in his senior
year with a TD reception with
four seconds remaining. He led
Ashland in receptions as a senior
and was second in tackles at
safety.
Enrolling at Mercyhurst College,
Capobianco wrestled for
two years, but later transferred to
Westfield State where he earned
his bachelor’s degree in business.
He currently works at Stone’s
Public House as the bar manager.
Capobianco’s legendary father
coached at Holliston for the
last 13 years and won a pair of
TVL championships. “My dad
wanted to step away to spend
more time with his family, and
he also found it difficult to recruit
prospects to wrestle,’’ Capobianco
said. “He started at Ashland,
then came to Holliston,
returned to Ashland and finished
up at Holliston.’’
The younger Capobianco,
who was Ashland High’s wrestling
MVP as a junior and senior,
expects to be a coach who’ll motivate
his wrestlers and be patient
as they improve. “As our season
moves along and the kids get better,
I’ll be more demanding,’’ he
said.
As the new coach builds his
own program and puts his stamp
on it, he’ll be looking for competitors
who possess special attributes.
“I want kids who’ve got
a big heart, a desire to compete,
who won’t quit and who are intense,’’
he emphasized. “Wrestling
takes discipline and mental
toughness is a huge asset.’’
Capobianco also wants his
athletes to derive valuable life lessons
from wrestling, or any sport
for that matter. Some of those
lessons include discipline, setting
goals, overcoming adversity and
learning how to lead. “Wrestling
teaches life lessons, and it will
help our kids to become better
individuals and good citizens,’’
he emphasized.
Matt Baker, Holliston’s athletic
director, said he is thrilled
that Capobianco is staying on
board in his new role as head
coach. “Mike’s been a part of
the staff for a number of years,
“He’s got the background, desire
and demeanor to be a successful
head coach. Having coached
with his father, he has a strong
foundation to build on and will
only enhance our wrestling program.
I’m excited to work with
him and assistant coach Kevin
McShane as they put their own
stamp on the traditionally strong
wrestling program at Holliston.
Capobianco believes he can
rebuild Holliston’s stature in the
TVL and he’s delighted with
Baker’s support. “Matt is energetic,
and he’s been supportive of
our program,’’ Capobianco said.
a special topic created to excite
your child about the natural
world. There will be crafts, activities
and lots of laughter. So come
and join the fun. This month’s
parent. Fee: $5m/$6nm per person
per session
Space Invaders: Saturday,
December 10th, from 6 -9 p.m.
Each December, thousands of
meteors collide with our atmosphere,
usually unseen or unappreciated
by Earthly inhabitants.
Those who choose to get up before
sunrise, however, and who
are lucky enough to have a clear
night sky, can witness a phenomenon
that has continued for centuries.
The Geminids Meteor
Shower is considered by many
to be the best show in the winter
night sky. The Geminids are
known for producing up to 60
multi-colored meteors per hour
at their peak. Bring your sleeping
bag (if the weather is cold)
and lawn chairs, hats, scarves
and gloves. We’ll supply the hot
drinks and snacks. Minimum age
8. Fee: $17m/$20nm per person
Birds of a Feather Flock Together:
Sunday, December
18th, from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Pleasantly introduce your family
to the variety of wintering
birds at Stony Brook. Learn just
how these creatures survive the
harsh New England winters.
Together we’ll look for golden
and ruby crowned kinglets, rusty
blackbirds, juncos, ruffed grouse,
wild turkeys, and many more.
Of course we will be sure to talk
about any other wildlife we may
encounter along the way. Minimum
age 6. Fee: $6m - $8nm per
person
Spontaneous Explorations
(on snowshoes or not): call to
be put on our list. We will invite
you when it snows. Come on an
exciting walk through the woods
using this unique Native American
invention. Beginners and
experts welcome. If you have
snowshoes, bring them; several
pairs will be available for those
who don’t. Other times we just
get an itch to go birding. If the
weather looks great, or there is
a rare bird nearby and you want
to join us, call (508) 528-3140 to
be put on the spontaneous explorations
