Looking for a New Home
The Abundant Table’s lease
with the First Congregational
Church has ended. Its last meal
at that location was November
25th. At the end of September,
the group’s founder, Aislynn
Rodeghiero, received a generic
letter from the Board of Trustees
of the First Congregational
Church instructing Abundant
Table to leave within 60 days.
According to Rodeghiero,
she was not given a reason for
the decision and has been trying
to make contact with members
of the Board to discuss their decision
to no avail.
“I am extremely disappointed
that I haven’t had an
opportunity to speak with anyone
about this,” Rodeghiero
said. “We are looking for a new
location on the bus line or close
to Norwood center and hope to
find something suitable by the
end of the year.”
Rodeghiero said they have
reached out to most of the local
churches and some other organizations
and that “while they
were wonderful, they could not
commit to consistent days of the
week,” which she believes is essential
to keep their regular visitors
from becoming confused.
She explained that most of the
Abundant Table’s guests live
in apartments or local boarding
houses and a number come
from group homes and have an
array of developmental disabilities.
These individuals hunger
for socialization, conversation
and an environment where they
can engage with others, meet
new people and feel pampered
at a meal out.
According to Laurie Shea
who joined the Abundant Table’s
Board of Directors last year
to help raise funds for the organization,
the benefits of this worthy
organization are multiplied.
“Abundant Table is not only
about providing a hot meal. The
social piece is as important as the
meal,” Shea said.
Rodeghiero echoed her sentiments.
“Nutritious food and socialization
are both imperative components
to a healthy lifestyle and
human survival," Rodeghiero
said.
While the socialization aspect
of dinner will be lost, a
been found. Pam Chubert of
walking from place to place, which
she said was an austere paradox to
the landscape of minivans, million
dollar homes and fine dining
restaurants that characteristically
paint the upscale suburban canvas.
“This visual picture, coupled
with then-current statistical data
on subsidized housing, poverty,
free lunch programs and the like,
depicted the hidden reality that
there is great socioeconomic need
in many suburban areas of Massachusetts,"
Rodeghiero said.
her academic studies, provided
the impetus for creating this meal
would like to continue their work,
but in order to do so, they need to
find a new home. Can you help?
They don’t need anything
fancy. They need a place to set up
tables for approximately 60 people,
and a working kitchen with a
stove, oven, refrigerator, sink and
storage area. (A second refrigerator
nice, but not essential.) Since many
guests of the program walk, a location
Norwood Lieutenant Instructs Fellow Officers on Autism
by Renee Plant
Autism is one of the fastestgrowing
developmental disorders
in the U.S., affecting 1 in 69 children,
and 1 in 42 boys. Norwood
Police Lt. Martin Baker, whose
22-year-old son has autism, has
made it his mission to help educate
his fellow officers on how to best
respond to calls involving those
who are on the spectrum.
Lt. Baker has spent the past
decade teaching about autism
in police departments across the
state through a program called
ALEC, which stands for Autism
and Law Enforcement Education
Coalition. ALEC instructors help
harbor a greater understanding of
autism among public safety and
law enforcement personnel.
“The training is presented by
first responders who have a loved
one on the spectrum,” Baker said.
“That offers a unique perspective
because they know what the challenges
of autism are. Any ALEC
instructor has to live it daily, and
be both professionally and personally
connected.”
Autism affects an individual’s
way of communicating and interacting
with those around them.
Since autism falls within a “spectrum
disorder,” symptoms can
present themselves in a variety
of combinations, and may range
from mild to severe. According to
Baker, the scale of the disorder is
a subject that is addressed in the
training, with common symptoms
being highlighted to promote understanding.
“Like any two people, no two
people with autism are exactly
alike,” Baker said. “Everyone with
autism displays their disability differently.
There are common traits
that can be noted, such as movements,
mannerisms and speech
patterns.”
Those on the autism spectrum
may exhibit repetitive behavior
in their movements, mannerisms
and speech patterns. Having officers
within a department who
are able to recognize these indicators,
Baker said, can be a great
asset when responding to service
calls.
“Our job is not getting easier;
in fact, it’s getting more difficult,”
Baker explained. “We
wear so many hats when we
deal with service calls, and need
many means of discipline in our
repertoire to help resolve conflict.
I’m trying to give [officers]
more tools for their toolbox to
think outside of the box, and
to find solutions to conflicts and
problems.”
Individuals with brain-based
disorders are statistically more
likely to have run-ins with the
police, however, are less likely to
commit crimes. Given this, Baker
said it is important to respond to
such calls with a different mindset.
“The way you deal with someone
on the spectrum is almost the
opposite of how you would deal
with a typical person,” Baker
said. “I want to teach officers to
buy time when dealing with special
needs, and if it takes an hour
instead of 10 minutes, so be it. It’s
a win-win if everyone involved
goes home happy and well.”
“We’re honored to be the recipient of
Dirty Dawg Wash’s Santa Pet Photo Day
for the 7th year,” Kathy Hinds, President of
Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog said. “We look forward
to seeing you bring your beloved pets to
capture an extra-special holiday memory in
a great photograph. It’s a joy to watch families
pose their 4-legged family members and
then tease them with a favorite toy, motion or
sound, to get their pets to look in the right direction
for a great photo op! Sometimes it’s
just the pets, sometimes it’s with one or more
family members. There’s always lots of smiles
– of people and pets!”
For visitors looking to learn more about the
organization, volunteers from Massachusetts
Vest-a-Dog will be available at the Santa Pet
Photo event to share their mission and answer
questions.
Healthy Strategies to Survive the Holidays
Each year, the holidays come
and go, and we seem to fall into
the same holiday trap. We overeat,
drink too much, sleep less,
and stress over how the holidays
will fulfill all our expectations. By
Dr. Rochelle Bien & Dr. Michael Goldstein
the time New Years arrives, we are
overweight, exhausted, and worried
about the bills that will soon
arrive. This is a recipe for disaster
that will no doubt lead to the
breakdown of your health. Make
this year different with these fabulous
strategies for healthy holiday
success.
STRATEGY #1: HYDRATE
Water is vital to wellness and
immune defense. Start your day
with an 8oz glass of water. This
will boost your metabolism and fill
you up!
STRATEGY #2:
EAT SMALL MEALS
Eat a small meal before going
to a holiday party, so you are not
famished when you get there. You
will be able to make healthier
choices if you are not hungry.
STRATEGY #3:
GET MOVING
When shopping or doing errands,
park your car far from the
Norwood Hospital No Longer
Accepting Tufts Medicare
Blue Cross Blue Shield holding
informational seminar
Beginning December 31,
Steward Health Care Network
(SHCN) Primary Care Physicians
(PCPs) will no longer participate
in the Tufts Medicare Preferred
(TMP) HMO Medicare Advantage
insurance. Patients who wish
to continue seeing their doctor are
invited to select a new insurance
plan by December 7.
Blue Cross Blue Shield will
be on site on December 5, 3-6
p.m., Norwood Hospital, 800
Washington St., Draper Lobby,
providing information about the
Blue Cross Medicare Advantage
Health Plan. The public is invited
to stop by the booth to get more
information.
RSVP by calling 800-678-2265
to reserve a time to speak with an
attendant, or to get more information.
Please bring your Medicare
card and your list of medications.
To learn more about other options
available, call Fallon Health
at 877-300-4597 or Harvard
Pilgrim Health Care at 844-602-
6168. The Medicare Annual
Election Period begins October
15 and ends on December
7, 2016. If you have additional
questions, contact Member Services
at 855-344-2414.
stores. Use the stairs over the elevator
when possible. This will
allow you to increase your steps
and burn more calories. Continue
with your exercise routine through
the holidays. DON’T STRAY!
STRATEGY #4: LAUGH
OUT LOUD
A good belly laugh produces
endorphins and provides stress
relief. These hormones boost immune
health and your mood as
well.
STRATEGY #5: REST UP
The body restores itself during
sleep. Lack of sleep can be stressful
an impact your immune system.
Sleep provides and important
foundation for health and energy.
For most healthy people,
these strategies fuel a recipe for a
healthy holiday season. However,
if you are struggling with chronic
health challenges, this recipe may
not be enough. This would be a
good time to contact Dr. Bien
or Dr. Goldstein at The Holistic
Center at Bristol Square located
at 1426 Main Street, Walpole.
Two Sisters – Two Styles – One Dream
Looking for something fabulous?
Whether it is an eye-catching
outfit, accessory, a one-of-a-kind
piece of home décor or handpainted
gift, you are unlikely to
find a collection of items quite like
Rustic and Chic: A Sisters’ Boutique,
located in Norfolk at 114C
Pond Street (near the corner of
Routes 115 and 1A).
“We are as different in personalities
as we are in styles,” says
fashion-forward Kim Ringuette,
who has partnered with her sister
and artist, Corinne Parker, former
owner of Walpole’s The Primitive
Window.
When asked how the idea of
the store came about, Kim explains
that a bell went off when
she and her Aunt ventured into a
small boutique a year and a half
ago. “I found myself thinking
about the changes I would make
if I were the owner, and also how
my sister has always wanted to
open up another store, and suddenly
I thought, how crazy would
it be if we brought the two styles
together? I knew we could find a
way as sisters and best friends to
make it work.”
The resulting shop, an eclectic
treasure trove of high-end fashion
and every day wear seamlessly
presented against a cozy backdrop
including Corinne’s creations,
physically illustrates how the concept
of chic need not be relegated
to Fifth Avenue.
“It is one of those places you
can come in and get a fabulous
holiday dress or date outfit – or
a special hand-painted personal
gift,” says Kim. “We have brought
our two worlds together with a
‘living boutique’ that changes and
evolves, so it is always a fun experience.”
Everything in the quaint little
Cape-style building is designed
to be “touchable, made to try on,
even to bend down and take a
peek under the tables or look in a
drawer to see what you can find,”
says Kim. “New and different
items will constantly be added,
and nearly everything in the shop
is for sale.”
Corinne has, in fact, made or
refinished many of the furniture
pieces in the store which are for
sale, a labor of love she calls her
“therapy.” She says she found her
calling in primitive style and the
folk art of tole painting, and what
started as a few small signs and
projects grew into furniture and
custom orders. “I love the older
look, the rustic look,” says Corinne,
of her art. “I basically redo every
single thing that I touch. It makes
me feel good to stand back and
think I created that.” She says she
hopes Rustic and Chic’s clientele
will feel a similar satisfaction when
they bring home her creations,
from refinished furniture to whimsical
decorative items. “I hope
they smile every time they look at
them,” she says. “Kim, who is into
fashion and decorating, actually
blends our styles” says Corinne. “I
go home and create…”
“And then she brings me what
she has made, so I can create the
in-store design that is uniquely
us,” finishes Kim, inspired by her
We Could Be Called 'College Hunks Donating a Lot of Stuff!'
College Hunks Hauling Junk
and Moving has established a commendable
reputation in the moving
and junk removal business, but
should their customers look beyond
their strength, equipment and business,
they will discover an organization
that is not only committed
to their customers, but looks to develop
strong relationships with the
community.
When residents see those colorful
orange and green trucks passing
through their streets, they could be
doing much more than moving furniture
for new homebuyers. What
many people may not know is that
the company uses their vehicles as
a donation medium for worthwhile
causes. For example, for the past six
months, a truck ventures every two
weeks into Boston to the Greater
Boston Food Bank and picks up
approximately 3,000 pounds of
food and delivers it to the Centre
St. Food Pantry in Newton Centre.
Without this bi-monthly deduction,
it would cost the pantry approximately
$400 to acquire this
much needed inventory to service
approximately 65 families in the
Newton area.
"We are trying to get more involved
in the community and giving
back," Franchise owner Dan
Tereshko said. "We definitely make
it a priority to give back. They are
on a shoe string budget to stay
afloat as a non-profit organization."
College Hunks is in the process
of coordinating their help with the
Norwood Ecumenical Food Pantry
and in addition to reaching out to
its organizers, they are also offering
their services to local residents interested
in contributing. For people
interested in donating food and
cannot get transportation to the
Norwood Food Pantry, College
Hunks will pick up the food and
deliver it themselves. In fact, they
are sponsoring an in-house competition
with their employees who
can process the most donations! In
addition, any December client will
have $10 deducted from their bill
as thanks for donating as little as
one can of food to the Norwood
pantry!
While these generous services
are alone impressive, College
Hunks takes their pledge to servicing
their community further. When
customers have excess furniture in
their move, College Hunks does
not simply take their materials to
a dump or landfill. Everything that
could be reused or repurposed it
brought to a secondary donation
facility through their partnership
with Goodwill Morgan Memorial.
"We donate and recycle about
65-70% of everything we take
in," Tereshko said. "It is going to
non-profit organizations, such as
Goodwill, Savers or a veteran's
organization. Our primary business
model is moving and junk
removal and donations, but getting
donations to the food pantries and
those in need is taking the second
step. Sometimes we explain to our
clients, we could be called College
Hunks donating a lot of stuff!"
On a more personal and professional
note, Tereshko has the
complete support from his staff to
contribute to community efforts.
His employees are recruited from
a variety of backgrounds and appreciate
the efforts the company is
making to ease the lives of others.
When he launched College
Hunks Hauling Junk & Moving,
in Norwood, in 2014, as a second
career from after 11 years in the
Navy, Tereshko used his leadership
and mentoring skills to pay
it forward. Named 'Rookie of the
Year,' in his first year of ownership,
Tereshko appreciates the diversity
in his employees' background, from
veterans, photographers, budding
musicians, artists) and welcomes
the contribution their unique skills
bring to his organization and his
clients.
"I want to give a shout out to
the guys, they are the ones that are
doing God's work," Tereshko said.
"It was their idea. They take a lot
of pride with the food runs. It is not
just me or the company, this is College
Hunks. We care top to bottom
about the community.
For more information on hiring
and Capote, as well as the more
casual Margaret Winters. They
will also carry hats, neck warmers
and fingerless gloves from Pandemonium,
along with Treska and
Cloud 9 jewelry. Kim says she will
initially appeal to a broad audience
with wares, from embellished
sunglasses and fun hair accessories
to Marc Chantal leather handbags,
but she plans to listen closely
to what appeals to her clientele.
Foremost, she believes women
want unique pieces they know will
make them feel fabulous. “And we
all deserve to feel that way, we really
do,” she says.
She hopes women will savor
and share the experience of shopping
at Rustic and Chic.
“To me, shopping should always
be fun. Whether it is something
to wear or a purchase for
your home. People work hard for
their money, and when you spend
it, you want to walk away with
a product you love,” says Kim.
“You should be just as excited to
take it out of the bag when you
get home as you were when you
bought it!”For Corinne and Kim,
who grew up in nearby Walpole,
“We feel we are already a success.
We are going on this adventure
together as sisters, and we are putting
what we love to do into our
community with the love and support
of our family,” says Kim. “It
would be wonderful if we are welcomed
as a ‘must-go-to’ store.”
Rustic and Chic, located at
Volunteers
The Norwood Food Pantry is looking for Saturday morning
volunteers to pack and/or deliver bags to shut-in clients who
are unable to shop for themselves because of an illness or
more, whatever is convenient for you. If you think you might
be able to help, call 781-291-3663.
The pantry is also looking for individuals or groups wishing
to conduct food drives and make holiday donations, which can
be dropped off at the library and local supermarkets during
regular operating hours – or at the pantry (rear of Grace
Episcopal Church, 150 Chapel Street), on Saturday mornings,
inconvenience for neighbors in need, it will be open for client
shopping on Wednesday, December 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
I Can See Clearly Now,
the FAT is Gone!
To successfully drop those excess pounds,
46-year-old Tom McAullife knew he needed
a defined weight loss program. Between his
hectic work schedule as president of WMRC
Radio, 1490 AM, in Milford, and an active
home life with his wife and three teenage sons,
a clear plan was the only answer. He was already
familiar with New England Fat Loss as
an advertiser on his station and from friends
who shared their successful results. In July, he
and his wife joined at the Hopkinton location.
“I needed a program to follow,” McAullife said.
“I have all this exercise equipment in the basement,
but without someone like Dr. Johns and
his staff, it wasn’t going to happen. I can be extremely
disciplined if you give me a road map.”
McAullife made the right choice. After only 27 days
on the program he lost 30 pounds. The bonus, the
effect on how his new menu plan fueled his body.
“By the time I got literally seven days into it, I
could feel my metabolism on fire,” McAullife
said. “I felt like whatever I was eating was getting
burned up, the water was getting washed out.”
McAullife admits shedding the weight was the
initial goal, but he also joined NEFL to influence
other aspects of his life. His demanding schedule
promoted poor eating habits, and he felt a loss
of control. Before joining NEFL, his body took
charge, driving his actions, attitude and even sleep
habits. After only one month, everything changed.
“What I really wanted most of all is clarity,”
McAullife said. “With a busy family and stressful,
crazy work schedule, and feeling lousy because
of eating bad food every day, I felt like I
had lost clarity and organization in my head.”
Since his success with New England Fat Loss,
McAullife experiences a good night’s rest,
free of previous sleep apnea and snoring and
wakes at 5 a.m. to prepare the day’s schedules.
A restful sleep is even more vital when approximately
230,000 people rely on him and
his station to stay informed with their local
news, weather, traffic, music, religious and
consumer programming and sports coverage.
“I feel so good, it is simply amazing. The only
thing I can point to is because of my experience
with New England Fat Loss,” McAullife said.
Out and About
By Dawn C. Fitzgerald
Dear Santa,
I am really concerned because our county
seems to have gone completely insane. People are
protesting a President that the majority elected.
Whether you or I agree, this country is going to
change. It needs to be changed. And I am hoping
that this President can do it. Because someone
has to.
So Santa, can you please send him some calm.
I don’t know exactly how you wrap or box that,
but our new President needs some pronto. Because
what he says, well, oftentimes needs to be
said another way. He tends to scare people. He
needs to be a calm cool leader.
At times he reminds me of the Heat miser with
his Reddish Hair and sharp tongue. So Santa can
you please have a heart to heart with him? And
soon-before he takes office. He needs to make
friends and quick.
Can you please put some common sense in
other people’s stockings? Because almost everyone
needs that this year.
Let’s start with the rioters? You know the ones
Santa-they seem to think that by burning cars and
smashing store windows they are making a point.
They are only causing more problems through
scare tactics and hate. They are definitely on the
Naughty List-and that should be after jail time
and cleaning up the messes they made. Oh, and
paying for all the damages they caused.
I know all about freedom of speech but when I
see rioters burning our flag, one my father helped
defend, it just makes me so angry. Burn a sign,
burn a bra, but not our flag. The one so many lost
so much defending.
They get coal Santa. I know you may disagree
with me on this. But if you burn the flag, you
should get a big fat lump of coal. And be on the
Naughty List for a long, long, time.
Cotton Headed Ninny Muggin is a mild word
for what I’d call them, but this is a family newspaper.
Santa, the whole world is watching us and how
we handle everything. Can’t we all just try and get
along despite our differences. Can’t we all work
together?
Usually in addition to asking for a smaller
waistline for Christmas-without actually entering
the gym, some jewelry, a few gift cards (especially
to Dunks), and some clothes, I’d ask for world
Peace.
But this year Santa, I want only Peace. Peace
for our country and peace for our world. I want to
not be afraid for my kids and their future. I want
peace of mind.
And to me and I’m hoping many others, that’s
more important than a smaller waistline, some
jewelry -or even a nice cup of coffee.
As for me, Santa, I wouldn’t say I was bad or
good this year. I’ve done my share of naughty and
nice and I’d like to say I’ve found some sort of
balance.
I’m sure if I’m not on your list I’m on someone
else’s.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays from my
house to yours! Let’s all have a safe, wonderful
new year!
Therapy Dogs Visit NFD
Norwood Fire Department was
recently paid a visit by six service
dogs currently undergoing their
initial training through Golden
Opportunities (GOFI) for Independence,
in Walpole. They are
trained to provide assistance to
veterans with mobility handicaps,
persons diagnosed with autism,
ALS, post traumatic stress disorder
and many other needs. Once these
admirable canines complete their
training, they will go on to provide
invaluable services at no cost
to America's veterans. The goal
of the visit was to make the dogs
comfortable around first responders
and all of their equipment
in the event they interact
with fire and police departments
while assisting their future
handler. GOFI is welcome
back any time in Norwood for
another visit!
Thank You from the IAM Strong Foundation
This past Fall, the IAM Strong
Foundation sponsored singer songwriter
Meg Hutchinson and her
sister Tess Adams in a free presentation
at The Norwood Theatre
entitled, “How We Got Through:
A Conversation Between Sisters.”
The program addressed Meg’s
journey with Bipolar 1 disorder
and her sister’s role on the path to
acceptance, healing, and recovery.
Two weeks prior to the program,
IAM Strong sponsored a free local
documentary “Pack Up Your Sorrows.”
One of the primary goals of
the organization is to continue to
open up the conversation about
adolescent mental health, and the
IAM Strong Foundation grant cycles
have been an important way
to do that. Through the funding
of grants, IAM Strong is able to
partner with surrounding communities
and organizations.
Last spring, grants totaling
$25,000 were awarded the Boston
Arts Academy High School,
for mental health services for its
high school age students, a grant
for a local filmmaker’s multi media
and additional coping skills for
students participating in the Therapeutic,
Our Fall, 2016, grant cycle
funded four more grants, including
funding the development of
Another Successful Walk and Fundraiser!
by Bella Caggiano
The goal this year for the
Breast in Show fundraiser walk
was $5,000, but organizers Becky
Collins and Meghan Terwilliger
and owners of Norwood's Soggie
Doggie, were thrilled with
the 2016 results. The 4th Annual
Breast in Show walk raised an
impressive $4,500 from generous
participants and donations which
will go towards breast cancer research.
"This year's walk was extra special
because we lost a close family
friend to breast cancer at the beginning
said. "It was really nice to have her
In total,
recognize teen depression and understand
how to intervene.
All of our outreach and grant
programs help to open up the conversation
about adolescent mental
health, and to erase the stigma associated
with mental health struggles
in teens. Without the generous
support of the community we
could not accomplish our mission,
and for that, we offer our sincere
gratitude.
In true Norwood style, the
community also contributed to
the cause with Georgio's offering
a pizza party to conclude the
event, Sydney Shuman Photography
documenting the day with
photos and several local businesses
contributing items for raffle prizes.
After going through an entire
season without a win last fall,
Norwood was looking to get their
golf game back in swing on the
links this year. And although the
Mustangs were able to put forth
a much better effort, it was one
match short of reaching the South
Sectionals.
Holding onto a 5-5-1 record
as they entered the final match of
the season against rival Walpole,
Norwood was feeling good about
advancing, especially playing on
their home course.
“We had the chance and
thought we were in a good position
playing at home where we
hadn’t lost all year long,” said first
year coach Kevin Hoffman. “We
played really well posting one of
our highest scores of the season
but unfortunately we ran into a
team that had two Walpole golfers
shoot under par and a third at
par.”
The loss, the first of the season
at the Norwood Country Club,
may have kept the Mustangs from
advancing into the tournament
this year, but gave the coach and
the returning players hope for the
years to come.
“It was a mixed bag after the
loss," Hoffman said. "We had gone 0-12 the year before but had
a good number of young, talented
golfers then. This year, six of our
13 golfers were sophomores with
four of them routinely contributing.
That was our silver lining.”
Despite the goose egg in terms
of wins last fall, Norwood was not
out of that many contests and an
extra point here and there could
have turned their entire season on
its head. Of their 12 losses, eight
were decided by single digit points.
While the team itself didn’t
qualify for post-season play, a
handful of individuals got to extend
their season a bit longer. Senior
captain Sean Briggs was the
team’s only representative to the
South Sectional Tournament at
the Easton Countrty Club where
he shot an 89 over 18 holes. Briggs
also qualified for the Spring Valley
Championship in Sharon where
he shot an 87. Two other senior
golfers, Mike Saad and Owen
Kelly, also joined Briggs at Spring
Valley where the duo each shot an
89.
Briggs and Saad were this year’s
golf captains and rightfully so. In
a league that plays the Stableford
System of golf and an 18 is probably
one of the best scores you’ll
come across, Briggs continually
shot around 14 to earn the team’s
highest average throughout the
year, while his fellow captain was
averaging a 12 and was playing his
best golf of the season down the
stretch.
Nestled in between the two
Norwood captains the Mustangs
had two left-handed golfers in
sophomores Charlie Hanoian and
Matt Hennessey, each putting up
an average of 13 on the season.
Another up and coming
sophomore, Mike
Curley, was not far
behind with an
11. Hoffman will
definitely be looking
at these three
underclassmen to
raise their game to
the next level next fall
and become leaders on
the fairways.
While there is no faultless
golfer, Hoffman likes what he sees
in his younger class.
“No one guy is the perfect
player, the coach said. "Some are
scrappy picking up points here
and there, while others may be
stronger and put together a string
of no points and all of a sudden
bang in a couple of birdies. We
have a top four as good as any
of our opponents and now we
just need to work on getting five
through eight up to par.”
Rounding out the scoring for
Norwood is Kelly, who averaged
an 11 and juniors Declan Tolman
and Ryan Giffin, each who tallied
a 10 average on the season. The
team carried one other senior in
first year player Sean Welch. Playing
in his first season with the
team, Welch primarily
gave his playing time
with the junior varsity
team.
Saying goodbye
to four seniors,
three who saw
significant playing
time, will leave
Hoffman with some
big shoes to fill, but he
feels his squad is up to the
challenge.
“With losing the seniors next
year it will definitely be tough to
replace them, especially since they
were significant contributors in
terms of points,” the Norwood
Coach said. “However, I firmly
believe that our sophomores currently
playing will move up to fill
that void, while the other sophomores
as well as some possible
incoming freshman, will pick up
their game.”
Who knows, if Norwood
could pick up an extra point here
and there along each match, the
Mustangs could quiet easily find
themselves not only playing in the
South Sectional Tournament, but
may be able to advance a little further
into the State Tournament.
Only time will tell.

Norwood Swim Captains
Norwood Sports
by Christopher Tremblay
Swimming is not considered
a big sport at Norwood High
School, but the team has three
highly motivated swimmers captaining
the Mustangs in the pool
this year.
“These are three fabulous
athletes that have matured and
improved their techniques in the
pool over the past few years,”
Norwood Coach Jennifer Rodger
said. “Being a smaller team in the
Bay State Conference going up
against teams that are twice our
size they’ve had to morph into
other roles and steep it up and do
what is needed.”
The Norwood trio has all been
swimming for the Mustangs for
the past four years. Rory Lake
swims the 200 IM, with a best
time of 2:41.12, 100 fly (1:14.03)
and the 100 backstroke (1:12.53);
Brendan Hurley swims the 50
free style (25.68), the 100 free style
(57.00), 100 breast stroke (1:08.57)
and the 200 free style (2:11.68) –
all of which he has already qualified
to swim in the post season and
Julia Kiley takes part in the 200
free style (2:23.00) and 500 free
style (6:30.14).
While the girls are a key component
to the squad, it’s Hurley
who is the strongest link. Over the
last three seasons the senior has
finished high in the rankings of
his races. As a freshman, he won
the breast stroke, the 50 free as an
individual and was part of two
winning relay teams (200 free relay
and the medley relay); as a sophomore
he continued the first place
finishes with the 200 free style, the
breast stroke and the medley relay
and last year he dropped off taking
second in both the 200 free relay
and the 100 breast stroke, third in
the medley relay and fifth in the 50
free style.
Despite his lack of championship
prowess last fall, Hurley was
named to the DVC All State team
as well as participating in the Division
2 State Tournament in the 50
free style, where he finished third
and the 200 free style relay grabbing
a second place finish.
Although a very competitive
swimmer, Hurley never thought
about swimming competitively
until a lifeguard told him that he
was a fast swimmer and should
check it out.
“I decided to give it a shot
and the breast stroke seemed to
be an easy stroke that I mastered
because of my situation” Hurley
said. “I have dislocated knees and
it is natural for me to get fast in the
water.”
Lake, who can swim just about
anything the coach asks of her, is
hoping to not only improving her
times, but helping the team as well.
In addition to the 200 IM and the
100 fly and backstroke, the senior
also takes part in the 100 free style
as well as the 400 relay and 200
medley relay.
“Being voted a captain by the
team was very exciting and I just
want to help the team improve
any way that I can,” Lake said.
“Although a small team, we have
a deep bond in which everyone
knows everyone else really well
and I think that helps us in the
pool.”
“Rory is a very versatile athlete
that will swim whatever we need,"
Rodger said. "She recently swam
the 500 free for us. She has grown
and extended herself for the good
of the team and we can rely on
her to virtually swim every stroke.”
Rounding out the captains is
Kiley, who considers herself a distance
swimmer and got involved
in swimming because of her
mother’s fear.
“My mother was afraid that I
would drown in the pool so she
put me in swim lessons at a very
young age and by the age of six I
was on a swim team,” Kiley said.
“Basically, I haven’t left the pool
since that time and have gotten
good at swimming.”
As a sophomore Kiley was part
of the 200 medley relay and 200
free style relay teams that participated
in the Sectionals and last
year the 400 free style relay team
finished 17th.
Despite having a small team
that hasn’t found their way into
the win column all that much this
fall, Kiley is hoping to keep the
team united.
“I'm hoping that the team has
no separation between grades and
stays on course to being the closest
Norwood Swim Captains
Julia Kiley, Rory Lake and Brendan Hurley
team that we’ve ever had,” Rodger
said. “The morale has never
gotten down because we all love
the sport. The only tough thing is
going up against some of the real
bigger schools where we have to all
swim four events while they only
have to compete in two – in that
situation everyone becomes much
more important.”
The Norwood trio put up
some decent times to close out
the season. Swimming at Newton
North High School, Lake swam a
1:10.33 in the 100 fly, just missing
the sectional cut of 1:09.01. At
the Bay State Conference, Kiley
saw a best time of 2:19.77 in the
200 free while Hurley qualified for
the states in the 100 breast stroke
with a personal and season best of
1:07.12.

We encourage getting pet insurance for all of your beloved
pets.
Keys to Health: Who would take your
pet if you were not able to keep her
any longer?
Life can throw us curveballs that makes it impossible for
us to keep our beloved furry friend - we lose our job, we get
evicted, we get divorced, we have a health issue. Sometimes
it is a positive change - we get married, have new children
or new pets in the household. Many animal-loving people
overextend themselves, and when unexpected situations
arise, they are not prepared to address their pet’s future.
BSAC regularly receives cats for such reasons. We ask that
pet owners think ahead and prepare for circumstances that
can lead to having to give up our cherished pets.
• DO ask family, friends, and co-workers if your pet's
personality and needs would be a good match for their
family or someone else they know.
• DO ask your vet for suggestions.
• DON’T put your pet outdoors. She is an animal, but she
is a tame animal, and has not learned to survive outside.
(Predators, insects, and diseases make it dangerous for
cats to live outdoors in any case.)
• DON’T leave your pet behind in the home if you have
been evicted. This is illegal -- it breaks animal cruelty
laws, even if you leave food and water for her. This also
leaves your pet an uncertain future, since she may be
taken to be euthanized.
Yes on 3: Farm Animals Breathe a Sigh
of Relief
A BSAC volunteer writes: During Mrs. Fingle's visit to
our adoption center, she asked my opinion on ballot question
3. Here is my response:
"This will prohibit breeding pigs, calves raised for veal,
and egg-laying hens from being held in spaces that prevent
the animals from lying down, standing up, fully extending
their limbs, or turning around freely. I feel animal neglect,
harm, and suffering is never justified. Providing food-producing
animals the simple “luxury” of being able to move
and function as they have been created to do is something
that should never have been taken from them.
“The only basis that comes up from the opposition is
the financial burden that treating animals more humanely
might cause. Alternate food sources of protein like beans
and soy milk may become popular as a cheaper alternative
for those in need. This could stimulate the economy towards
these alternative sources.
Mixed Signals for
Norfolk County Real Estate in October, 2016
According to the Norfolk
County Registry of Deeds, mixed
signals was the theme for Norfolk
County real estate activity in the
month of October, 2016.
“The data collected shows
seemingly contradictory figures
when it comes to both real estate
sales and lending activity," Norfolk
County Register of Deeds William
P. O’Donnell reported, "While
sales showed a slight year-overyear
decrease of 4%, the average
sale price of residential and commercial
property during October
was $756,035, a 27% increase.
Additionally, total sales volume,
again for both residential and
commercial property, was $688
million; which marked a 14%
increase compared to October,
2015.”
Mortgage activity also showed
some mixed signals.
“The number of mortgages
recorded during the month of
October was 3,120, a 23% increase
compared to the previous
Season’s Greetings
1039 Washington Street
Canton, MA
year," Registrar O'Donnell stated.
"However, total mortgage financing
for the month was $2 billion,
compared to $3.4 the previous
year. The drop-off is largely attributable
to an $811 million property
financed in Quincy and Braintree
in October, 2015.”
The same mixed signals were
also seen in foreclosure activity.
The bad news was the increase in
the number of foreclosure deeds
recorded. A total of 34 foreclosure
deeds were recorded in October
compared to 14 recorded during
the same time in 2015. The
good news was a reduction in the
number of Notice to Foreclose
Mortgage recordings, the first
step in the foreclosure process.
Seventy-seven Notice to Foreclose
Mortgages were filed in October
compared to 101 filed in October
2015.
“While I am guardedly optimistic
the worst of the foreclosure activity
is behind us, these numbers
do tell us that some of our neighbors
continue to face economic
hardship," O'Donnell said. "My
office is committed to partnering
with Quincy Community Action
Programs at (508) 598-0950 to
ensure homeowners who have received
a Notice to Foreclose Mortgage
from a lender are getting the
help they need. Another option is
to call the Massachusetts Attorney
General’s HomeCorps program
at (617) 573-5333.”
Inventory and competition appear
to be very relative factors in
the current Norfolk County real
estate figures, however, the slight
increase in interest rates will also
play a large part going forward.
“The real estate sales activity
experienced in Norfolk County
during the month of October
clearly shows a tremendous
amount of competition for a limited
number of properties available,"
O'Donnell said. "Keys for
a healthy real estate market going
forward will be the level of available
inventory and whether there
will be a potential rate increase by
the Federal Reserve. My office will
be monitoring these issues very
closely.”
Average October Norwood Housing
Prices Show Significant Dip
by Bella Caggiano
While comparing the sale of single family homes in
October, 2015 and October, 2016, the Norwood market
may be addressing a slight shift as the average sales
price showed a significant dip. The average sale price
decreased from $418,697 in October, 2015 to $399,750
in October, 2016. These figures are slightly skewed,
however, with one home sale last year for $775,000.
Homes continue to sell at a quick pace with the average
days to offer remaining unchanged year-over-year,
and the average days on market decreasing dramatically.
These figures could also be influenced by the sharp reduction
of inventory this year.
