BACKGROUND 6 TH - 10 TH MARCH <strong>2017</strong><br />
Innovation is the most important pillar of the current University<br />
of Nairobi leadership<br />
Nairobi Innovation Week (NIW) was conceptualized by the University of<br />
Nairobi and now involves a number of partners and sponsors. The annual<br />
event brings together various stakeholders to celebrate, re-focus and<br />
energize the innovation efforts in Kenya and the region.<br />
The University of Nairobi recognizes her critical role at the center of the<br />
innovation ecosystem in Kenya and Africa.<br />
The first NIW was held between the 3 rd and 7 th August 2015. The second<br />
edition was graced by His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta between the<br />
1 st and 5 th August 2016.<br />

OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES<br />
Nairobi Innovation Week brings together various stakeholders to a<br />
common platform in order to achieve the following objectives and outcomes :<br />

To champion relevant policy discussions<br />
on innovation within institutions and<br />
country.<br />
Influence on innovation related policies in<br />
institutions and more particularly the<br />
country. This will be achieved through the<br />
policy discussions, panel discussions,<br />
key note speeches and disseminated material<br />
during the Innovation Week.<br />
To showcase/exhibit and recognize<br />
innovations by researchers, incubatees<br />
and organizations.<br />
Expose relevant innovations to the broader<br />
community.<br />
To promote practical skills necessary to<br />
create innovations that truly impact on<br />
people and societies.<br />
Strengthen skills necessary for developing<br />
customer centric innovations. This will be<br />
achieved through hackathons and workshops.<br />
Develop specific problem focused<br />
innovations. This will be achieved through<br />
intensive guided hackathons ahead of the<br />
Innovation Week.<br />
Provide a support mechanism for<br />
innovations that have been developed<br />
to gain traction and scale.<br />
Strengthen the linkage between innovators<br />
and investors while exposing innovations to<br />
consumers. This will be achieved through<br />
exhibitions and pitching platforms.<br />

Academia ranging from University leadership to faculty from various disciplines.<br />
Entrepreneurs who have developed ideas into products and businesses.<br />
Innovators who are exploring solutions to specific problems.<br />
Students who desire to acquire innovation related skills as well as learn some of the<br />
innovations exhibited.<br />
Investors who look for innovations and startups that they can invest in.<br />
Members of the public who want to listen to presentations, participate in the discussions<br />
or view products on exhibition.<br />

APPROACH 6 TH - 10 TH MARCH <strong>2017</strong><br />
HACKATHONS<br />
Guided by customer centric product development<br />
experts, students and innovators will go through<br />
user centered design training and expected to solve<br />
very specific problems in the African context.<br />
Innovation focused research papers will be presented<br />
on 7 th March 2016.<br />

WORKSHOPS<br />
Working with various partners, the NIW committee will<br />
organise a series of workshops meant to strengthen<br />
innovation capacity of individuals and organisations.<br />
Exhibitions will take place between the 8 th and 10 th<br />

Currently incubated startups in the university accelerator<br />
program ( Africa Technology and Innovation Incubator - AfTIA ),<br />
invited startups from other incubation programs as well as<br />
products developed in the university will be presented for<br />
recognition and awarding.<br />
