8 Year in Review A Night to Remember On September 7th, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band performed to a sold out crowd at the Majestic Theatre. Headlining our 11th annual A Night to Remember, Lyle and His Large Band played a fantastic set of music all while helping CitySquare raise over $550,000. A huge thank you to event cochairs, Scott and Cindy Collier and Ross and Kara Miller, Board Members, Host Committee, and all of our sponsors and attendees. prayer Breakfast The 17th Annual Urban Ministries Prayer Breakfast and Public Forum was held on April 12th. Attendees engaged in a thought-provoking panel discussion focused on public education led by CitySquare’s President and CEO, Larry James. Panelists included CitySquare’s V.P. of Programs and Public Policy, Rev. Gerald Britt, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Susan Hoff of United Way Metropolitan Dallas, Todd Williams of Commit!, and Clint McDonnough of EducateDallas. Following the panel discussion, we continued the conversation with sessions on hunger, homelessness and employment. community Health Services Clinic In March, our Community Health Services Clinic moved from its location on Peak Street to a new facility at 2835 Grand Avenue in Dallas. The new facility, which is only blocks away from our new Opportunity Center, has more space and additional exam rooms to better accommodate patients. Through a partnership with Baylor Health Care System, the clinic is able to provide high quality health care to our uninsured or underinsured neighbors. Summer Food on the Move Expansion In the summer of 2012, CitySquare’s Food on the Move program expanded current operations in Dallas, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, making it one of the largest summer lunch delivery programs in the state. More than 20,000 children were fed with nearly one million meals served! AmeriCorps members not only delivered meals to the kids living in underserved communities, but they also provided an hour of physical and educational activities at most sites every day. Over 80% of Dallas ISD students qualify for free or reduced lunch. During the summer when school is out, tens of thousands of children lose access to these meals. Food on the Move addresses access by reversing the flow of service: we bring food to the kids instead of waiting for them to find us.
inner City Sundays Year in Review Citysquare’s Public Policy i v e s 9 Our work in the heart of this great city is possible only because of God’s amazing power as expressed in the faithful support of believers across the metroplex. In an effort to better coordinate our work, we schedule a series of special “Inner City Sundays” in congregations across the metroplex. These Sundays inform each church about our work with the poor and result in much needed funding and volunteer support. The need is great, and these congregations understand that the time is now to get in the fight against poverty! Lunch & Learn CitySquare hosted a Lunch & Learn series in 2012 at our administrative offices in downtown Dallas. We kicked-off the series with a tour of CityWalk@Akard, (home to our administrative and LAW offices), which was then followed by lunch. Each quarter we focus on a different topic or issue related to the changing landscape of our work to end poverty. For more information about our Lunch & Learn Series, please call 214.303.2117. Urban Engagement Book Club: Bi-monthly book club meetings with reviews and discussions on thoughtprovoking books related to poverty and advocacy. Social Justice: Working with constituents to inform underserved and under-represented communities on the details of the Affordable Care Act and voter rights and registration. Pay Day Lending Ordinances: CitySquare helped lead the charge in getting ordinances passed in Dallas to protect economically vulnerable neighbors from predatory and exploitive lending practices. For the City For the City...where ambitious young professionals connect, serve, and grow. CitySquare’s young professional’s group offers members an opportunity to network and share experiences and knowledge that benefit their growth as professionals and community leaders. We continued to move forward with this initiative to actively involve budding young professionals. In 2012, this group hosted monthly social hours, regular Cocktails & Conversations, and volunteered at many of our 14 programs—resulting in time and funds that helped continue our work. SNAP (at the Farmers Market): Instrumental in getting SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits accepted at the Dallas Farmers Market, thus giving families more options for fresh produce. Community Hunger Assessment: Organizing focus groups to conduct surveys and gather data in food insecure communities to assess the extent of hunger in Dallas county.
