Making America Great Again<br />
And with these famous words, the most important document<br />
in our nation’s history was drafted and signed by<br />
men who believed in altering the course of history by<br />
declaring their independence from an autocratic ruler and<br />
oppressive system.<br />
The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the<br />
United States of America, and the Bill of Rights forms<br />
the framework for the freedoms that are granted to each<br />
American.<br />
Whether we think about it or not, these documents embody<br />
the principles that govern our daily lives.<br />
What makes America great? Is it political power? Is it<br />
economic power? Is it military power?<br />
The answer lies in its people. We the people...these are the<br />
first words on the preamble of the US Constitution. Because<br />
in reality, power rests in the people. On November<br />
8, 2016, we will make history again by voting in the 45th<br />
President of our Republic. As citizens of this Republic,<br />
we need to ensure that our voices are heard and the way<br />
to do that is to exercise our right, our privilege to vote<br />
wisely and responsibly.<br />
Sadly, at times it has seemed that the current political<br />
scene has resembled a circus that has just come into town.<br />
In other cultures, having fun at the absurdity of it all, is<br />
often the best coping mechanism. We’ve opted to join in<br />
by poking fun at the situation especially since there have<br />
been numerous clown sightings in several places. The<br />
result is an editorial involving clowns and mimicking a<br />
campaign to encourage people to see the levity of it all<br />
but at the same time reminding them of their civic duty to<br />
vote.<br />
Some want to build walls and some want to build bridges.<br />
In fashion, as in politics through immgration policies,<br />
some want to build walls instead of bridges. The move to<br />
keep away those who are “different” from us, manifests<br />
itself in several ways. In the early days when people came<br />
by the boatloads to this country, they were measured,<br />
examined, and questioned and segregated before they<br />
were allowed into the country. The early immigrants faced<br />
discrimination and tough challenges. It’s the same with<br />
the fashion industry. There is a cadre of gatekeepers who<br />
wish to keep the fashion community exclusive to their<br />
“kind” to maintain control over what the general masses<br />
can consume as “fashion”.<br />
We are a nation of immigrants. And it is this quality that<br />
keeps this nation moving forward with new ideas and new<br />
cultures that enrich our daily lives. Without these new<br />
ideas and enriching cultures, the survival of the fashion<br />
industry will be put in jeopardy. Witness the emergence of<br />
new and upcoming fashion designers such as Alexander<br />
Wang, Thakoon, Jason Wu, Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung,<br />
Issey Miyake, and Monique Lhuillier whose designs<br />
are being featured on the runways of New York Fashion<br />
Week.<br />
What then does it mean to be an American?<br />
It means that we have choices. We have tons of choices,<br />
too many in fact that we often get paralyzed making<br />
the right choice. Not every person on this planet has the<br />
luxury of having more than one choice. And for many of<br />
us, we tend to squander that opportunity.<br />
Finally, even though we resort to political satire to get our<br />
point across, we will always feature beauty in every single<br />
issue we publish.<br />
Beauty is important, it gives us hope!
