End of an era for leisure centre but the beginning of a new dawn<br />
The end of an era is nigh with the<br />
closure of Rushcliffe Leisure Centre<br />
in the new year, but a new dawn<br />
will begin in West Bridgford when<br />
Rushcliffe Arena opens after a<br />
multi-million pound refurbishment.<br />
Rushcliffe Arena was knocked<br />
down in 2015 and in its place - set<br />
to open in January - is a new stateof-the-art<br />
leisure centre, which<br />
will include a 25-metre six-lane<br />
swimming pool, a learner pool with<br />
family beach, a 120+ station fitness<br />
suite, two aerobics studio, a group<br />
cycling studio, sauna/steam room,<br />
sports hall, squash courts, snooker<br />
room, a six-lane indoor bowls hall<br />
and Cafe Vita.<br />
The new centre received a setback<br />
when it was hit by fire in September<br />
of last year while the old building<br />
was being pulled down. A 17-yearold<br />
boy has since been given<br />
a two-year detention order for<br />
starting the fire.<br />
Councillor John Cottee, from<br />
Rushcliffe Borough Council, said:<br />
“We’re pleased that the culprit has<br />
been caught and sentenced. This<br />
fire did set the building project<br />
back, but we’re pleased that the<br />
new Rushcliffe Arena is due to open<br />
on target in January 2017.”<br />

The Rushcliffe Arena, situated off<br />
Rugby Road, used to be home<br />
to agricultural fields up until<br />
the 1960s, with historical maps<br />
showing this from as long ago as<br />
the 1880s.<br />
In the 1960s it became a landfill<br />
site, before the construction of<br />
Rushcliffe Arena in 1993 with<br />
further expansion in 1995. The<br />
new premises will not only provide<br />
leisure facilities for the local<br />
community, but also offices for the<br />
Borough Council.<br />
Councillor Neil Clarke, Rushcliffe<br />
Borough Council leader, said:<br />
“We’re very much looking forward<br />
to this exciting opportunity to<br />
provide modern fitness and leisure<br />
facilities, whilst at the same time<br />
reducing the running costs of the<br />
council offices by relocating to<br />
modern efficient premises on the<br />
same site.”<br />
Rushcliffe Leisure Centre opened<br />
in October 1976, next to Rushcliffe<br />
School in West Bridgford and it fast<br />
became a popular leisure location.<br />
Its vast swimming pool with room<br />
for both competitive and leisure<br />
swimming saw it become a mustdo<br />
activity for the young and old.<br />

memories are fantastic ones and<br />
I remember going to a swimming<br />
club on a Saturday morning. I just<br />
remember getting up very early, or<br />
it felt like it at the time, and being<br />
taught to swim. It holds good<br />
memories for me, so it is a real<br />
shame it is shutting down.”<br />

Inventing Tubes – A Pasta Kidz<br />

Christmas lights in West Bridgford<br />
The Christmas lights switch-on<br />
proved to be a great occasion<br />
in West Bridgford. There were<br />
seasonal festivities throughout the<br />
day, leading up to the big switch-on<br />
at 5pm by the Mayor of Rushcliffe,<br />
followed by a firework finale.<br />
Central Avenue was closed to<br />
traffic and in its place was a<br />
children's fairground, live music<br />
and shows, as well as a market.<br />
On Gordon Square, the showpiece<br />
was a mini ice skating rink, a<br />
YouNG market with stalls by local<br />
young entrepreneurs and Christmas<br />
walkabout entertainers.<br />

West Bridgford girl Amelia is named a top fundraiser in Nottingham<br />
Ten-year-old Amelia York from<br />
West Bridgford has been awarded<br />
the title of a ‘Top Fundraiser’ for<br />
raising over £500 during this year’s<br />
Cycle Live Nottingham event for<br />
the charity, When You Wish Upon a<br />
Star (WYWUAS).<br />
The charity awards were held by<br />
WYWUAS and Perfect Motion to<br />
recognise charitable cyclists. It saw<br />
Amelia and two other fundraisers<br />
awarded cycling jerseys for raising<br />
over £2,500 between them.<br />
Amelia, a Year 5 pupil at Greythorn<br />
Primary School, said: “Three years<br />
ago I lost my granddad to cancer<br />
and ever since then I’ve been doing<br />
fundraising activities in his memory.<br />
I wanted to help WYWUAS because<br />
illness is horrible for everyone<br />
especially families and children and<br />
I just wanted to make a positive<br />
difference for anyone going through<br />
a difficult time.”<br />
Cycle Live Nottingham 2016<br />
marked the end of Amelia’s<br />
fundraising campaign, during which<br />
she took part in an incredible trio of<br />
events including a mile swim and<br />
an 11-mile run. Altogether Amelia<br />
raised £516.46 for WYWUAS and<br />
was recognised as the charity’s<br />
third-highest fundraiser.<br />

the final of the prestigious BBC<br />
Young Dancer Competition.<br />
Oscar, who is now a third year<br />

Ballet West School in Scotland,<br />

The family-run Nottingham Pet<br />
Crematorium in West Bridgford has<br />
bounced back from a catastrophic<br />
fire that threatened to destroy<br />
the business. Following major<br />
rebuilding and refurbishment, it has<br />
become the first crematorium in the<br />
Midlands to be accredited under<br />
a new independent inspection<br />
scheme that guarantees a highly<br />
professional and dignified send-off<br />
for pets.<br />
Their West Bridgford premises were<br />
almost totally destroyed by fire on<br />
8th March 2015. Owners Rita and<br />
John Harbury-Carlisle join a handful<br />

Three West Bridgford School netball teams are heading to Regionals<br />

The West Bridgford School have<br />
had three netball teams qualify<br />
for a regional tournament in<br />
Peterborough on 28th January<br />
2017 - the only school in Notts to<br />
achieve this. The school has put on<br />
intensive coaching sessions which<br />
all girls have been fully committed<br />
to. They have trained really hard<br />
and this has paid off, with the U14,<br />
U16 and U19 girls teams qualifying<br />
for the next round.<br />
The U19 Girls were the first to<br />
qualify after coming runners-up<br />
at the Nottinghamshire County<br />
Tournament. They ended up in a<br />
really difficult section and had to<br />
play against three private schools.<br />
They beat Nottingham High School<br />
7-5, Worksop College 10-4, Becket<br />
8-3, but lost against Nottingham<br />
Girls High 8-7.<br />
final against Nottingham Girls High<br />
School. They lost 8-5 in the final<br />
but secured a place at Regionals.<br />
The U16s struggled with a team<br />
because of injury but managed to<br />
pull it together at the last minute.<br />
They were focused and managed<br />
to fly through their section winning<br />
all games. They had a tough<br />
semi-final but secured a win. They<br />
unfortunately lost in the final but are<br />
now training hard for Regionals.<br />
With two teams already qualifying<br />
for Regionals, the U14s were<br />
feeling the pressure but were<br />
very determined and excited for<br />
the tournament. There were 16<br />
teams that had entered this county<br />
tournament, with everyone being<br />
split into four sections. West<br />
Bridgford knew they had to win<br />
their section in order to progress<br />
any further, as there were no<br />
runner-up spots available this year.<br />
They qualified as runners up in<br />
their section and then played the It was with a positive mindset from<br />

Rushcliffe School wins award for dedication to voluntary service<br />
West Bridgford's Rushcliffe<br />
School has been presented<br />
with a prestigious new award,<br />
created by the Lord Lieutenant<br />
of Nottinghamshire, to recognise<br />
young people who are making<br />
a huge contribution to voluntary<br />
service. Students notched up an<br />
amazing 2,500 hours of voluntary<br />
service over the last year, with more<br />
than a third of the school’s 1,480<br />
pupils involved.<br />
Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire,<br />
Sir John Peace, the Queen’s<br />
official representative in the county,<br />
explained: “While travelling around<br />
the county last year, I became<br />
aware of the amazing voluntary<br />
work being done by young people<br />
and yet they didn’t seem to be<br />
getting recognition for it. That’s<br />
why I wanted to create this award. I<br />
had to get special permission from<br />
Buckingham Palace to introduce<br />
it and as far as I know no other<br />
county has anything like it.”<br />
Students at Rushcliffe are involved<br />
in a wide range of projects<br />
designed to support the local<br />
community, national charities and<br />
children abroad. These include...<br />
•Going into a local care home<br />
to spend time talking to and<br />
listening to people with dementia.<br />
Pupils undertake training before<br />
embarking on this work.<br />
•Cooking Christmas dinner for the<br />
residents of a local care home.<br />
•Helped a local church to construct<br />
a sensory garden for its nursery<br />
group. Pupils went every Saturday<br />
for five months to dig out soil, lay<br />
concrete and bricks for new flower<br />
beds and do planting.<br />
•Organising a fundraising festival,<br />
Esperanza, to support children at<br />
The School of Hope in Guatemala.<br />
This large-scale event involves<br />
music and dance performances as<br />
well as stalls and is attended by the<br />
whole school and wider community.<br />
•Travelling to Ecuador to carry out<br />
volunteer work, including digging<br />
drainage for a community centre<br />
and laying a floor for a school.<br />
•Supporting a disabled centre,<br />
nursery and school in Malawi.<br />
Students spent a week there<br />
planning and delivering lessons.<br />
Following the visit, they fundraised<br />
to send a container to Malawi with<br />
much-needed books, stationery,<br />
clothes, computers and PE kit.<br />
•Planning and delivering a series of<br />
sports festivals to primary schools.<br />
In addition, every year group<br />
chooses a charity to support and<br />
organises fundraising activities<br />
throughout the year. The school<br />
was chosen for the award after<br />
Arthur Sandford interviewed<br />
a group of students about its<br />
voluntary projects.<br />

Lewis, said: “Helping others and<br />
supporting both our local and<br />
global community is one of the<br />

Rushcliffe School pupils launch giant balloon into space for data<br />
Pupils from Rushcliffe School in<br />
West Bridgford launched a giant<br />
balloon into the stratosphere to<br />
collect pictures and data from close<br />
to space.<br />
The science experiment saw<br />
a helium-filled balloon as tall<br />
as an adult launched into the<br />
stratosphere, carrying a video<br />
camera and GPS trackers. It’s<br />
expected to rise as high as 100,000<br />
feet, around 30 km, to what is<br />
known as “near space”.<br />
A team of eight Year 11 students<br />
have worked with two science<br />
teachers to plan the daring<br />
experiment. Their plan was to<br />
recover the balloon, which may<br />
travel up to 100 miles away before<br />
descending back to earth.<br />
Science teacher, Adam Zerdazi,<br />
who organised the extra-curricular<br />
project with fellow teacher Dr<br />
Sophie Morris, explained: “The<br />
balloon has a polystyrene box<br />
attached to it with a video camera<br />
mounted on top. It also contains<br />
GPS trackers and data logging<br />
equipment.<br />
“Once it gets really high up,<br />
pressure will cause it to burst and<br />
it’s got a parachute on it which will<br />
bring it back down to earth.<br />
“We’re hoping to get some amazing<br />
footage as well as temperature and<br />
pressure readings. Ideally we’d like<br />
to see pictures showing the blue<br />
of the atmosphere below and the<br />
black of space above.”<br />
A lot of work has gone into<br />
preparing for the launch.<br />
“The students have had to work<br />
out how to mount the camera, how<br />
to insulate it from temperatures as<br />
low as minus 50 and how to attach<br />
the payload to the balloon,” said<br />
Mr Zerdazi.<br />
The school has also had to get<br />
clearance from the civil aviation<br />
authority to undertake the launch.<br />
Science teachers at Rushcliffe<br />
heard about the idea during Space<br />
Week and decided it would be a<br />
great way to send pupils interest<br />
in STEM (Science, Technology,<br />
Engineering and Maths), quite<br />
literally, sky high.<br />
Christian Smith, aged 15, said: “It<br />
was crazy seeing all of our work<br />
literally just go up in the air. I loved<br />
watching it go up. We’ve been<br />
working on it for a couple of hours<br />
a week over the last four weeks. It’s<br />
been really fun.”<br />
Benjamin Stevenson, aged 16,<br />
who programmed the Micro Bit<br />
technology on the balloon, said:<br />
“I’m feeling nervous. As the<br />
programmer I want to make sure it<br />
all works.<br />
“In future I would like to do a<br />
rocket, something even faster, one<br />
step away from NASA. That’s where<br />
most of us who’ve been involved in<br />
this would like to work.”<br />
The extra-curricular project has<br />
been funded with winnings from<br />
a STEM competition that pupils<br />
competed in last year.<br />
Mr Zerdazi said: “I couldn’t be<br />
prouder of them. They’ve absolutely<br />
loved doing this project.<br />
“We only started work on this a<br />
month ago and the pupils have put<br />
in so much effort after school and<br />
at lunchtimes. It’s been great to get<br />
them out doing something really<br />
active and interesting.”<br />

Sports awards showcases the best at West Bridgford-based school<br />
A spectacular sports awards<br />
ceremony, where over 70 students<br />
were honoured, took place at West<br />
Bridgford's Emmanuel School with<br />
special guest speaker, Olympian<br />
gold-medal winner Dr Tim<br />
Brabants. During the evening, the<br />
awards were given to students who<br />
had achieved significant success or<br />
showed commitment to a sporting<br />
discipline.<br />
Notable winners included Charlotte<br />
Troup (pictured left with Tim) who<br />
won an astonishing five awards,<br />
including netball, badminton, cross<br />
country, Sports Council Member of<br />
the Year and Sports Personality of<br />
the Year.<br />
Charlotte’s mum, Cathy, told The<br />
<strong>Local</strong> <strong>News</strong>: “I am really proud of<br />
her. She works incredibly hard both<br />
inside and outside of school hours<br />
in her sports - even getting up at<br />
5am to go swimming. She gives her<br />
everything and it’s really nice to see<br />
that recognised.”<br />
Humble Charlotte recognises that<br />
her mother’s support is crucial,<br />
saying: “She has a keyring that<br />
says Mum’s Taxi. I didn’t expect to<br />
win anything but I was hoping. My<br />
favourite sport is swimming and I<br />
quite like my netball, but I do a lot<br />
of others including some dancing.<br />
All of the teachers at Emmanuel<br />
are all really nice and supportive.”<br />
When asked whether her sights are<br />
set on Olympic gold, she said: “If I<br />
keep working hard, then maybe.”<br />
During his very interesting speech,<br />
Tim Brabants gave advice to<br />
students, gleaned from his career<br />
as Great Britain’s most successful<br />
canoeist and one of the world’s<br />
most accomplished Men’s K1<br />
sprint kayakers.<br />
He said: “It is really important not<br />
to be afraid of standing out or<br />
achieving. It’s all too easy to blend<br />
in with everyone else, whether<br />
that’s in academic or sports<br />
subjects. I don’t think you should<br />
be afraid to perform.”<br />
Gareth Clarke, head of PE at The<br />
Nottingham Emmanuel School,<br />
said: “Sport is an extremely varied<br />
subject with many options and<br />
opportunities for young people to<br />
get involved.<br />
“Too often the key sports like<br />
football dominate and students for<br />
whom these more popular sports<br />
are not areas of strength, often<br />
opt out of sport altogether. It is<br />
important that we expose students<br />
to a wide range of sports in lessons<br />
and in competition.”<br />
Spooktacular singing celebrations at West Bridgford care home<br />
It was all treats and no tricks when<br />
local singer Paul Friday joined<br />
staff and residents at The Grand<br />
Care Centre in West Bridgford for<br />
a special Halloween-themed<br />
singing celebration.<br />
Dressed as a blood-stained<br />
policeman, the Nottingham-based<br />
singer showcased his vocal talents.<br />
He entertained the elderly audience<br />
with a one-and-a-half-hour set,<br />
which included a mix of rock 'n' roll,<br />
big-band swing, old-time singalong<br />
and party tunes - all designed to<br />
get everyone up and dancing.<br />
To set the scene, the care home<br />
had been decorated with an array<br />
of ghosts, bats and pumpkins<br />
and the staff team donned fancy<br />
dress and facepaint to ensure<br />
that residents thoroughly enjoyed<br />
their afternoon.<br />
The Grand is a state-of-the-art<br />
82-bed care facility on Greythorn<br />
Drive. It offers person-centred care<br />
in an expertly designed, purposebuilt<br />
comfortable environment.<br />
Group reservations manager at The<br />
Grand, Dawn Collett, told The <strong>Local</strong><br />
<strong>News</strong>: “We have a busy and varied<br />
activities programme, headed by<br />

opportunity to involve the residents<br />
in a special musical celebration<br />
where they could take the<br />
opportunity to singalong with Paul,<br />

West Bridgford Under-13 Girls<br />
rugby team play their first fixture<br />
West Bridgford RFC (WBRFC)<br />
Under-13 Girls played their first<br />
game as a team as they took on<br />
Melbourne RFC and Mansfield<br />
RFC. After their first month of<br />
contact rugby training, the U13<br />
girls from West Bridgford RFC were<br />
invited to their first-ever fixture as<br />
they faced Melbourne Minxs and<br />
Mansfield RFC.<br />
They have been playing tag rugby<br />
over the last six months but jumped<br />
at the chance of having a go at<br />
contact rugby. Caroline Towndrow,<br />
the girls' coach from WBRFC,<br />
contacted Nick Woodland, the<br />
Minxs head coach, who offered<br />
a coaching session and matches<br />
against Melbourne RFC.<br />
Caroline said: “As the games<br />
progressed from touch to hug to<br />
contact rugby, the girls’ confidence<br />
grew during the games. I couldn't<br />
believe the progress the girls<br />
made over their three matches.<br />
Their tenacity and determination<br />
grew, as well as their team spirit.<br />
Best of all, they loved it and are all<br />
looking forward to their first home<br />
fixture when they will be hosting<br />
Melbourne in a return match.<br />
“Thanks to Nick Woodland for<br />
his support as it has made their<br />
transition to contact rugby so much<br />
more enjoyable. This is quite a big<br />
step forward for the club and we<br />
hope its success encourages more<br />
girls to get involved in rugby.”<br />

what it took to compete at three<br />
Olympic Games and about how the<br />
club's swimmers can reach their<br />

the Portland Leisure Centre, just<br />
over Trent Bridge. They are friendly<br />
swimming club, with ages ranging<br />
from eight to 18 and they compete<br />
in galas up to county and tegional<br />
level. Their enthusiastic team of<br />
coaches constantly improve the<br />
style and stamina of the children.<br />
The club started in 1931 when the<br />
manager of the Portland Baths<br />
approached swimmers in the River<br />
Trent and suggested they might<br />
prefer to swim in the pool. They<br />
took up his offer and the club has<br />
continued ever since.<br />

Keyworth lung expert gives lifeline to Vietnam<br />
People with breathing difficulties<br />
in a region of Vietnam will soon<br />
be benefiting from extra support,<br />
thanks to a specialist from<br />
Keyworth. Professor Sally Singh,<br />
head of Cardiac and Pulmonary<br />
Rehabilitation at Leicester’s<br />
hospitals, is helping set up and<br />
deliver a rehabilitation service for<br />
people with chronic obstructive<br />
pulmonary disease (COPD) in Ho<br />
Chi Minh City.<br />
Working with the team of family<br />
physicians and physiotherapists,<br />
she delivers a training programme<br />
to the team and delivered the<br />
programme ahead of the launch of<br />
a pulmonary rehabilitation service<br />
at the University of Medicine and<br />
Pharmacy hospital.<br />
Prof. Singh said: “Rehabilitation<br />
is such an effective intervention<br />
for people with COPD and<br />
recommended by NICE and many<br />
other national and international<br />
guidelines. It is not as challenging<br />
as you might imagine to deliver in<br />
low and middle-income countries.<br />
“It is possible to achieve important<br />
improvements for individuals with<br />
chronic lung disease, despite not<br />
having access to sophisticated<br />
exercise equipment. It’s not difficult<br />
to reach international standards<br />
with minimal equipment.<br />
“The welcome was amazing. They<br />
were all incredibly enthusiastic and<br />
really keen to set something up that<br />
would be sustainable.”<br />
Two other hospitals were also<br />
visited during the five-day trip,<br />
which took place at the end of<br />
October. She also visited Uganda in<br />
April to set up a similar service.<br />
The work is part of the Horizon<br />
2020 Fresh Air project to improve<br />
health outcomes for people at<br />
risk of, or suffering from noncommunicable,<br />
lung diseases in<br />
poor countries.<br />
Rushcliffe Befriends<br />
goes from strength to<br />
strength in Notts<br />
Rushcliffe Community and<br />
Voluntary Service (RCVS) has<br />
secured three years of additional<br />
funding to continue and extend<br />
its Rushcliffe Befriends scheme,<br />
which supports Rushcliffe residents<br />
who are over 50 and experiencing<br />
social isolation. Their volunteer<br />
befrienders can help someone<br />
to become involved with a local<br />
group, or can provide company by<br />
visiting at home or by going out,<br />
perhaps for a walk or a coffee.<br />
They group needs more volunteers<br />
so they can help more people. To<br />
volunteer, all you need is to be<br />
aged 50+, live in Rushcliffe, have<br />
a few hours a week to spare and<br />
want to help local older people.<br />

HSCSC U16 Girls and East Midlands Airport Team<br />
When HSCSC Football Club was<br />
started in 2006, one of the founding<br />
sponsors who helped to fund kit<br />
and equipment was East Midlands<br />
Airport. It seems highly appropriate<br />
that as the club celebrates its 10th<br />
anniversary this year, the airport<br />
have agreed to sponsor the kit<br />
of the club's longest-established<br />
team, the U16 Girls.<br />
Club chairperson, Nigel Rowden,<br />
said: “We are very grateful to the<br />
East Midlands Airport Community<br />
Fund for their continued support.<br />
It is an increasing challenge to<br />
keep young people from the age<br />
of 14 upwards playing organised<br />
sport and to be able to benefit<br />
from the generosity of local<br />

Fair in the Lutterell Hall on Church<br />
Drive, West Bridgford.<br />
It was a bright sunny morning with<br />
a bitter north wind blowing, but this<br />
did not deter approximately 150<br />
supporters from attending.<br />

Honda’s CR-V<br />
It’s a few years since the UK<br />
experienced significant snowfall<br />
over winter.<br />
The arrival of the snow and ice<br />
often brings high levels of anxiety<br />
for some drivers and leaves many<br />
stranded or facing very difficult<br />
journeys.<br />
It’s fair to say that many people are<br />
not prepared to drive a rugged off<br />
road vehicle all year round, just in<br />
case our winter brings a cold snap<br />
with ice and snowfall. However an<br />
increasing number are opting to<br />
drive a vehicle which offers a good<br />
degree of security and peace of<br />
mind if the weather does take a<br />
turn for the worse.<br />
Honda’s CR-V is one such vehicle.<br />
The best selling British built CR-V,<br />
available in both two and four<br />
wheel drive, offers car like road<br />
holding and refinement levels,<br />
and indeed the four wheel drive<br />
version runs in two wheel drive<br />
configuration for the majority of the<br />
time, which results in good levels<br />
of fuel economy. However when<br />
it detects conditions deteriorating<br />
it automatically switches to four<br />
wheel drive to enable its driver to<br />
get out of any tricky situation.<br />
Two engine options are available.<br />
The petrol powerplant is a<br />
2.0-litre unit. It’ll get to 60mph in<br />
a respectable 10 seconds. The<br />
1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel is good for<br />
either 120 or 160ps and has up<br />
to 350Nm of torque. The diesel<br />
returns a combined fuel economy<br />
figure of up to 64.2 mpg but don’t<br />
overlook the 2.0-litre petrol which is<br />
good for 39.2mpg.<br />
The CR-V handles superbly.<br />
Unlike many 4x4s in this sector<br />
of the market, the CR-V doesn’t<br />
feel the least bit top heavy. The<br />
CR-V is different thanks to a taut<br />
suspension backed up by Honda’s<br />
revolutionary Vehicle Stability Assist<br />
(VSA) system.<br />
As you would expect with Honda,<br />
standard equipment levels are high,<br />
with the aforementioned safety<br />
features standard across the range<br />
together with Trailer Stability Assist<br />
(an anti snaking system) for anyone<br />
that tow’s a caravan or trailer.<br />
Since its launch in 2000 the CR-V<br />
has been at the top of the sales<br />
chart and it’s easy to see why.<br />
Legendary Honda build quality and<br />
reliability together with a practical<br />
yet stylish design has made it<br />
many friends. Running costs are<br />
extremely competitive due to the<br />
good levels of fuel economy and<br />
corresponding levels of road tax,<br />
which are some of the lowest<br />
in sector. Indeed you can take<br />
advantage of five years /62,500<br />
miles servicing for just £555 on new<br />
models.<br />
It’s very hard to find significant<br />
cause for complaint with the Honda<br />
CR-V. It remains a 4x4 that drives<br />
extremely well, has two brilliant<br />
power plants, neat but unfussy<br />
interior styling and a reliability<br />
record that’s second to none. Small<br />
wonder that the CR-V excels in<br />
customer satisfaction surveys. If<br />
you are looking for that extra peace<br />
of mind during the winter period,<br />
but don’t want to sacrifice comfort<br />
then you could do far worse than<br />
to consider Honda’s 4x4 offering.<br />

an everyday feature of life on the<br />
road and the latest model is the<br />

The sixth generation Polo has just<br />
been given a shot in the arm with<br />
the introduction of Match models<br />
which come loaded with kit.<br />
The Match replaces the Polo<br />
SE and is available in three and<br />
five-door bodystyles priced from<br />

First things first - don’t fear print,<br />
print is your friend. Often people<br />
prefer the relative safety of tones<br />
and textures, rather than making<br />
the bold decision to choose a print,<br />
as they see it as far more of a visual<br />
commitment, more of a statement<br />
and therefore it ages far quicker<br />
than its safer alternative requiring<br />
it to be updated sooner. Not so, in<br />
my opinion.<br />
Prints are visually exciting. They<br />
require the viewer to check in, they<br />
can’t ignore what’s there when<br />
often tones/textures alone satisfy<br />
as an overall aesthetic, but don’t<br />
engage the viewer in the same way.<br />
They express personality without<br />
having to say a word. It’s not just<br />
a backdrop, it’s a spotlight on a<br />
stage. Saying this, you don’t have<br />
to go for the brightest and boldest<br />
prints to get noticed.<br />
Where to start...<br />
Start small if you’re not yet<br />
convinced. Take the step of<br />
introducing maybe a couple of<br />
scatter cushions in your chosen<br />
print on your sofa that interrupts<br />
a predominantly solid colour<br />
background. See how that makes<br />
you feel. If you notice more<br />
comments about a change in the<br />
room or if you feel brave enough,<br />
step up the changes to include<br />
patterned window dressings, rugs<br />
or even a feature wallpaper.<br />
Where to look...<br />
We can’t talk about print without<br />
saluting the godfather of print<br />
himself, Matthew Williamson. As<br />
a lover of colour and print myself,<br />
in my opinion his work is up there<br />
with the best. Imagine my joy<br />
when I find he has collaborated<br />
with Duresta, the home furnishings<br />
designer, and created a selection<br />
of sofas and chairs in stunning<br />
and luxurious fabrics. Heaven! If<br />
traditional furniture is your thing,<br />
but you’re looking for a cheeky<br />
twist, look no further as Hopewells<br />
in Nottingham have a selection on<br />
show for your viewing pleasure.<br />
If you’re looking for a modern<br />
take on print, let me introduce<br />
you to Kirkby Design. Part of the<br />
Romo Group, as stated it provides<br />

The term used to collectively name<br />
some lung diseases, including<br />
chronic bronchitis, emphysema and<br />
chronic asthma, is COPD (Chronic<br />
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).<br />
People with COPD find that they<br />
have difficulties breathing.<br />
Typical symptoms of people who<br />
have COPD include...<br />
•Increasing breathlessness when<br />
thay are active<br />
•A persistent cough with phlegm<br />
•Frequent chest infections<br />
COPD is largely a preventable<br />
disease. The most common cause<br />
is smoking but it can also be from<br />
breathing in smoke or fumes from<br />
other sources, such as cooking,<br />
industrial gases and pollution.<br />
People with COPD are prone to<br />
acute deterioration of respiratory<br />
symptoms, particularly increased<br />
breathlessness and cough, and<br />
increased phlegm production.<br />
These symptoms may be<br />
brought on from a viral infection,<br />
high pollution levels or sudden<br />
cold weather.<br />
These can be very frightening to<br />
suffers and are one of the biggest<br />
causes of hospital admissions.<br />
If untreated, COPD gets worse and<br />
can increase the risk of multiple<br />
long-term medical complications.<br />
The breathlessness of COPD can<br />
mean that people stop exercising,<br />
so they become more prone to<br />
other medical problems like high<br />
blood pressure, heart disease,<br />
obesity and diabetes.<br />

Well, my advice is to use the freezer<br />
and the microwave oven as much<br />
as you can and plan ahead to make<br />
it easy for yourself.<br />

watching, calorie counting and<br />

advance, which keeps well stored<br />
in an air-tight container is...<br />
Walnut & Cheese Savouries<br />
- 3oz (75gr) butter or margarine<br />
- 4oz (100gr) plain flour<br />
- 3oz (75gr) grated mature cheddar<br />
- 1 small egg, lightly beaten<br />
- 1oz (25gr) walnuts, finely chopped<br />
Simply rub the fat into the flour,<br />
add the cheese and enough egg to<br />
make a firm mixture (save a bit) and<br />
a pinch of salt.<br />
Roll the mixture out and cut it<br />
into strips.<br />
Brush with the remaining egg and<br />
sprinkle with the walnuts.<br />
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in a hot<br />
oven 350f mark 4 until golden.<br />
And a crisp Sauvignon Banc will go<br />

Dry grass is easily cut by the<br />
mower blades and will be picked<br />
up by your machine, whereas<br />
wet grass tends to be mashed up<br />
and mutilated by the blades and<br />
the roller. If finding a dry day is a<br />
problem, drag the reverse side<br />
of a brush over the lawn, wait 30<br />
minutes or so and then the lawn<br />
should be dry enough to cut.<br />
Worm casts play havoc making<br />
lawns look messy and ultimately<br />
encourage weeds and weed<br />
grasses. You can give extra help to<br />
deter earth worms by collecting up<br />
leaves, this removes surface food<br />
which encourage worms to cast.<br />
Keeping the edges tidy is<br />
something you can do in winter.<br />
If you have time, use a half-moon<br />
edger to cut the lawn edges back.<br />
Keep off the grass if frosty or very<br />
wet to prevent damage. Remove<br />
leaves that may blow from other<br />
areas of the garden.<br />
Patio Tubs and Baskets<br />
Alpine plants growing in sink<br />
gardens or stone troughs will<br />
flower better next spring if they are<br />
protected from regular winter rains<br />
with a sheet of clear Perspex. As<br />
their name suggests, these high<br />
altitude plants are not too bothered<br />
about really cold weather, but<br />
they do tend to rot off if roots are<br />
permanently wet or rain is allowed<br />
to stagnate on the foliage. Many<br />
of these alpine plants are naturally<br />
dormant under snow cover where<br />
they have cold but dry conditions,<br />
so water from the sides if necessary<br />
and place the troughs in the best<br />
light conditions possible.<br />
Grow your Own<br />
Winter is a difficult time for garden<br />
birds such as wood pigeons. When<br />
food is scarce they will descend on<br />
winter greens, stripping the leaves<br />
and fouling the crop.<br />
Protect brassicas left outside with<br />

by Eco-Schools.<br />
Eco-Schools is an international<br />
award programme that guides<br />
and recognises sustainable and<br />
environmentally-friendly principles<br />
within schools.<br />

<strong>Local</strong> paralympians make a splash at new university sports village<br />
<strong>Local</strong> paralympian swimming stars<br />

to a brand new state-of-the art<br />
sports village on the University<br />
of Nottingham’s University Park<br />
campus. Visiting through the<br />
university’s link with swimming<br />
giant Nova Centurion club, the<br />
paralympic medallists took a<br />
plunge in the pool as the David<br />
Ross Sports Village opened its<br />
doors to members last month.<br />
The £40 million complex, open to<br />
members of the public as well as<br />
the university community, includes<br />
a 20 badminton-court sports hall,<br />
12m climbing wall, martial arts<br />
dojo, 200-station fitness suite and<br />
even an indoor archery salle.<br />
Ollie Hynd, double gold-medallist<br />
in Rio in the 400m freestyle and<br />
200m individual medley, said: “The<br />
sports village here is incredible. It’s<br />
fantastic to have this kind of facility.<br />
We have a great history of sport<br />
in the city, so to have every sports<br />
area you can possibly think of here<br />
at the university is great.”<br />
Daniel Tilley, director of sport at<br />
Nottingham University, said: “The<br />
Sports Village is a fantastic addition<br />

New raised terracing installed at Lady Bay-based Nottingham Rugby<br />
Nottingham Rugby supporters have<br />
been handed an early Christmas<br />
present, with the news that raised<br />
terracing has now been installed at<br />
the club's ground in Lady Bay.<br />
Two 18 metre-long sections of<br />
six-tiered terracing are now in situ<br />
at The Bay.<br />
They were used for the first time<br />
last month when the Green &<br />
Whites beat Ealing Trailfinders<br />
17-13 in a crucial Championship<br />
rugby encounter.<br />
The two identical stands have been<br />
brought into Nottingham’s home<br />
ground on a temporary basis.<br />
But the plan is that they will remain<br />
in position on a permanent basis,<br />
if they prove to be popular with the<br />
home support.<br />
The club are now issuing a call<br />
to arms to all Green & Whites<br />
supporters to back the new<br />
terracing by using it in numbers,<br />
as general manager Steve Smith<br />
explained to The <strong>Local</strong> <strong>News</strong>.<br />
“We know that tiered standing<br />
is something that many of our<br />
supporters have been asking for<br />
since we first moved to The Bay,<br />
so we’re delighted to finally be in a<br />
position to deliver this,” he said.<br />
“We want to give all our fans<br />
the best possible matchday<br />
experience and this is another<br />
important stepping stone in the<br />
right direction. There’s no question<br />
that crowd have a big part to play<br />
in supporting the lads and we hope<br />
that this will add the already unique<br />
atmosphere we have down here at<br />
Lady Bay.<br />
