Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Matt Lynch
The Loyola senior recently
committed to play
basketball at St. Norbert
College.
Do you have any
superstitions?
During the game, when I
go to the free throw line, I
always have to take a deep
breath, take two dribbles
and spin the ball before
I shoot. Also, before the
game, I have to give my
brother, who is on the
team, a tap before we leave
the bench.
Why did you decide to
play basketball?
I’ve loved it since I
started when I was 3 or 4
years old. The atmosphere
of the gym when you’re
playing is awesome.
What’s the best
part about playing
basketball?
Winning is always good,
but winning with your
teammates and friends
is the best. Nobody else
you’d want to do that with.
If you could play any
other sport, what
would it be?
Football. I used to
play when I was in grade
school. I love the physicality
of it, hitting people
and the adrenaline it brings
you.
What’s the best part
about being a Loyola
athlete?
The community around
the school. Everyone there
cares, will support you
and wants you to succeed.
They’re there for you to
help lead you.
Favorite memory as a
Loyola athlete?
Playing New Trier in
the playoffs last season.
It meant more because the
winner would move on
in the playoffs. It was at
home too, so that made it
an even better atmosphere,
just one that you’ll never
forget.
Best advice you’ve
ever gotten?
An AAU coach from
when I was in grade school
was the first one to tell me
that everything happens
for a reason. If you make a
mistake, you’ve just got to
be patient and make sure
you learn from it.
Where do you see
yourself in 10 years?
Working at a job I truly
love. I want to go into the
business world, so anything
in that is somewhere
I can see myself.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
Growing up, I played
every sport. I played soccer,
football, lacrosse,
baseball, all of them. I
stopped in sixth grade
when I focused on basketball
though.
If you could have a
super power what
would it be?
To be invisible. You can
escape things, go places
without people knowing,
do things you might not be
able to do if you were visible
to others.
