WHAT TO EXPECT
Your Friendly Specialists
As a specialist tour operator, we focus on content and quality, achieved by our
thorough research and planning, and our personal, flexible service. We are a
team of travel professionals, archaeologists, historians and guides with the
knowledge and experience to create the most enriching and enjoyable of travel
experiences. We have been doing so for nearly 20 years.
"Exactly what I was looking for...I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end"
(customer feedback from our Cyprus tour).
Our Tours
We like to provide well-informed, realistically-paced and reasonably-priced
tours. Itineraries are not too rushed or intensive, just nicely balanced with time
to get off the beaten track and to relax and absorb it all. They include a host
of fully guided excursions and interesting talks to add context and
understanding, and excellent hotels (usually 4-star) that offer some luxury and
charm. Meals are often included but sometimes it is good to explore local
restaurants, so we try not to include them all.
Our Groups
No prior knowledge is required and everyone is welcome, whether travelling
singly or with a partner. Our guides and speakers bring it all to life; they are
knowledgeable and friendly, and often add illustrated lectures as well.
Our group sizes are quite small,
usually between 10 and 20 people.
This ensures good communication
and personal service, and more
freedom to explore and discover those
hidden gems that make all the
difference.
There are rarely any long or difficult
walks so anyone with a reasonable
level of mobility will enjoy our tours.
We will be happy to advise you when considering a tour - call us for a chat.

Archaeological Travel
Like a foreign country, the past is full of difference and interest, and it
underlies the character and identity of everywhere. It is also the wider
story of humankind and so holds relevance and meaning for us all.
The world's ancient and historic sites are full of human stories, great
discoveries, profound insights and unsolved mysteries. This is why
archaeological travel is so fascinating. It brings significance and
authenticity to our travels, unites culture with adventure, and gives depth
of insight into our world and its peoples.
Flights and Extended Stays
We give you complete freedom of choice of departure airport, airline,
flight times and length of stay by adding flights on a personal basis rather
than including group fares in all our prices. We will be pleased to book your
flights for you, and any extended stays, and we can recommend preferred
flights but you are free to book your own if you prefer. All flights booked
through us give you full ATOL protection for the whole tour package.

island; and the beautiful Bellapais
Abbey, a Gothic treasure in a peaceful
mountain village.
Day 7: Heading east we explore the
ancient city of Salamis, founded as far
back as the Trojan Wars, and one of the
largest city kingdoms of ancient Cyprus.
interwoven with present Turkish culture
as living testament to the ‘East meets
west’ heritage of Cyprus.
surroundings.
Day 2: Visit Paestum for a magnificent
introduction to the archaeology of the
region. Its splendidly preserved Greek
ancient world and testimony to the Greek
influence on Roman culture. In the evening
enjoy an included dinner in the hotel and an
illustrated lecture from your tour director.
Day 3: Herculaneum, like Pompeii, was
buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius
in 79 AD. We get intimate insights into a
colourful, close-knit community enjoying
life in a favoured seaside location. The
nearby Villa Oplontis has stunning wall
ancient streets and fully enjoy the
experience of being there.
Day 5: Naples reached its zenith as a royal
capital of Renaissance and Bourbon kings
and is now a fascinating, teeming
metropolis. We pay particular attention to
the wonderful exhibits in the National
Archaeology Museum, principal home for
the antiquities from Pompeii and the region.
Day 6: In Roman times Pozzuoli was the
largest town of the region and its
amphitheatre is particularly interesting.
The coastline from here to Cape Misenum
was the most prestigous and fashionable
part of the Bay of Naples, and the main
naval base for the Roman fleet. Pliny the
Younger witnessed the eruption of Mount
Vesuvius from here, and Robert Harris's
novel on Pompeii found inspiration from
the huge water cisterns. At Baiae we see
one of the grand villas that the rich and
famous had built here.
Day 7: With so many things to see, a
free/optional day works very well - your
tour director can help with ideas such as
joining an excursion to Capri, Vesuvius or
Amalfi. Or just relax and enjoy the area.
Day 8: You will be transferred from your
hotel to the airport for your flight home, or
why not stay longer in Italy?

"We went on 3 short
UK tours this year and
undoubtedly enjoyed
this one the best"
ITINERARY
Day 1: Make your way to the charming small
town of Rye, on England's south coast.
Check-in at the Mermaid Inn and meet your
tour leader, Dr Christopher Cole, for an
early evening walking tour of Rye, followed
by a 3-course evening meal.
Day 2: Get a feel for the landscape and
heritage of Romney Marsh with a drive
across its length to explore the eastern half.
We visit the tiny hamlet of Burmarsh,
whose church of All Saints was
commissioned by William the Conqueror’s
half-brother in the 12th century. At
Eastbridge we discover our first lost village
of the Marsh, and at Newchurch we find a
peaceful village green, a leaning church
tower and an important RAF history. Stop
for lunch in St Mary-in-the-Marsh, and
conclude the day with a visit to the colourful
seaside village of Dymchurch, with its
glorious sandy beach, rich history and tales
of smuggling remembered in the Dr Syn
stories of local author Russell Thorndyke.
Day 3: At Fairfield we find the most iconic
of Romney Marsh’s hidden churches,
standing alone in a field and sole survivor of
the lost village it once served. Nearby in the
quiet village of Brookland, the Church of St
Augustine offers a unique octagonal,
wooden bell tower, and a splendid local pub.
In the afternoon we explore the market
town of Hythe, one of the jewels of the
Kentish coast with its historic centre and
Victorian seafront promenade. Of particular
interest is the Church of St Leonard’s,
famous for its crypt housing thousands of
human bones and skulls, the largest
collection in Britain and said to be men
killed at the Battle of Hastings.
Day 4: The landscape history of the Marsh
is a dramatic story of interaction between
people and the sea. The town of Lydd was
once an island and its impressive church is
one of the longest and tallest in Kent. But
it's in the small village of Ivychurch that we
find the so-called ‘Cathedral of Romney
Marsh’. Finally, we explore Old and New
Romney and the lost village of Hope that
lies between them. Romney harbour
disappeared virtually overnight in the Great
Storm of 1287, and the Church of St
Nicholas still has mooring rings in its walls
where ships were once tied up. Founded in
1066, it is one of the oldest Norman
structures in England and may have been
the final resting place of King Harold, after
his death in the Battle of Hastings.
Day 5: Check-out after a leisurely breakfast
and make your way home. Or why not stay
longer and explore some more?

Castle Acre Priory

Onsite with archaeologists at Sedgeford.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Make your way to the fine historic
city of Norwich, capital of Norfolk. Checkin
to your city centre hotel and meet your
tour leader for an introductory lecture and
an included 3-course evening meal.
Day 2: Norwich was one of medieval
England's most important cities and is now
one of its best preserved. Discover it this
morning on a walking tour through its
winding, cobbled streets and visit its
magnificent Norman cathedral and castle.
After lunch head to the nearby Norfolk
coast to see Burgh Castle, one of
England's best examples of a Roman shore
fort built to repel Anglo-Saxon invaders.
Day 3: Today is focused on England's most
important Anglo-Saxon site - Sutton Hoo,
the richest burial ever found in northern
Europe. Dating from the 7th century AD it
is the ancestral burial ground of the warriorkings
who forged the kingdom of England.
Enjoy a guided walk around the burial
mounds and see the excavated treasures in
an award-winning exhibition, including a
full-size reconstruction of the main ship
burial and its glittering crown jewels.
Day 4: A day on site with the archaeologists
at Sedgeford will show you the excavation
process, the field techniques and the latest
discoveries. The excavation's director will
give you a private guided tour of the active
dig, and talk about the aims and significance
of the project. There will be practical,
hands-on sessions with the excavation and
recording of finds and we even include a
picnic lunch with the diggers.
Day 5: Two visits today explore the manors
and monasteries that dominated everyday
life in medieval England. Since 1061
Walsingham has been one of the holiest
places in England. It was one of the four
great shrines of medieval Christendom and
remains a place of pilgrimage to this day. At
Castle Acre the impressive motte-and-bailey
castle, extensive priory ruins and pretty
walled town constitute one of the best
examples of a Norman settlement in the
whole country.
Day 6: The final morning is an opportunity
to see a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village
at West Stow. Rebuilt on the site of their
excavation this collection of timber
buildings is a vivid illustration of the period
and an important centre for experimental
archaeology. Return to Norwich by early
afternoon and make your way home.
