I don’t think you can take on a boat like Mariquita unless you are prepared to embrace that spirit of tradition, that legacy, that heritage, that pedigree – everything that was William Fife in the early days. John is a fearless helmsman. He understands it all. He sees it all. Even when he’s concentrating on the helm he sees the bigger picture. Mariquita is very difficult to steer … she doesn’t give you much feedback because of all the friction in the steering systems. Modern yachts have sophisticated roller bearings which reduce friction and therefore give you more feel, especially in light conditions. In contrast, Mariquita is not telling you what is happening through the rudder. Your only option on the helm is to stay focused. David Howlett 29
