Geographical survey
The Kingdom of Norway consists of the mainland, the archipelago of Svalbard and the island Jan Mayen.
The mainland consists of continental Norway and every island, islet and rock within the Norwegian baseline.
Svalbard consists of Bjørnøya, Spitsbergen, Nordaustlandet, Barentsøya, Edgeøya, Kong Kads land, Hopen, Prins
Karls Fodand and every island, islet and rock situated between i 0°and 35°E. longitude and between 74°and
81 °N. lattitude. Byan international treaty (the Svalbard treaty), signed on 9 February 1920, Norway's sovereigny
over the archipelago was recognised. On 14August 1925 the archipelago was offidally incorporated into the
Kingdom of Norway.
Jan Mayen is an island situated in the northern Atlantic. On 8 May 1929 it was placed under Norwegian sovereignty,
and became by law of 27 February 1930 a part of the Kingdom of Norway.
The Antarctic islands Bouvet Island, Peter l's Island and Queen Maud's land (20°W. and 45°E.)
on the Antarctic continent are dependendes. They were placed under Norwegian sovereignty by law of 27
February 1930, parliamentary resolution of 23 April 1931 and royal announcement of 14 January1939, respectively.
The dependencies are not part of the Kingdom of Norway.
