EDITOR’S NOTE
The Global Wellness Institute recently reported that global wellness
tourism revenues grew a whopping 14% from 2013-2015, more than
twice as fast as overall tourism.
What is so interesting to me is that the majority of wellness travel is
done by what they dub "secondary wellness” travelers - those who seek
out wellness experiences like spa, yoga, healthy food and fitness while
traveling, but where wellness per se is not the primary reason for the trip.
This is what we, through Wander, have always tried to inspire -
incorporating wellness into your adventures, whether home or away,
traveling for business or pleasure. So, whether you want to add a spa visit
to your next getaway, get outdoors this winter, or hideaway at a resort
that offers both smoothies for breakfast and premium wines for dinner,
we’ve got you covered in this issue!
From a luxe resort in Belize, to mindful retreats in the magical landscapes
of Lake Louise, Alberta to advice from the pros on the top apps for the
road, there's no shortage of ideas here. Healthy, mindful eating is an
integral part of wellness, so be sure to check out the juicing recipes and
tips for easing into a plant-based diet.
LIVE EAT WELL
Individually focused on achieving optimal health in body,
mind and spirit based on who we are and what we’re made of,
Ayurveda (“eye-your-vay-duh”) addresses the root cause of imbalance and
heals the individual person, instead of just treating the disease. Based on a
system of energies called doshas, Ayurveda says that just as no two people
are alike, based on no two treatments for health are alike either.
by Monica Bloom
nce we know what doshas are dominant
in us, we know what our balanced state
should be. This is extremely important because
with this knowledge we are able to notice when
the body goes out of balance AND we know
how to bring it back to balance. Since we are
little beings of nature and are made of the same
5 elements, we can use the opposite elements to
bring us back to balance.
Fall and early winter is focused on vata, the energy
of movement. During vata season, the vata energy
in all of us will likely increase, so whether you are
a vata person, live a vata lifestyle or just feel the
effects of dryness during vata season, you should
know the importance of using oils.
Used inside and out in Ayurveda, oils are more
than just a moisturizer, they are an essential
ingredient to keep the body nourished,
rejuvenated, toned, supple and to keep all channels
flowing in the right direction. Oil soaks in the skin
to reach all our bodily tissues and helps relieve a
variety of vata imbalances like constipation, dry
skin, anxiety, mood swings, joint pain, worry,
depression, even jet lag!
You wouldn’t put water on your skin if it’s dry right?
No, because your skin would only get drier. Yet in
most lotions, the first ingredient is water, followed
closely by alcohol! Bah! Your plan to moisturize is
instantly foiled. The skin eats (it’s an organ after all),
and anything on the skin is absorbed by the body. A
general rule is, if we can’t eat it, it should not go on
our skin. But we can eat oils!
In Ayurveda, there are three dominant doshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Take the quiz to determine your unique dosha balance!
Along similar lines, we can drink a lot of water but that doesn’t mean that we are necessarily “moisturized.” Oil
is unctuous which softens our outsides and penetrates deep in our tissues to keep vata emotional, mental and
physical energy balanced. Here are some ways you can use various oils internally and externally.
Ghee (clarified butter). Eat like you would butter. Melt on pastas, bread,
oatmeal, mashed potatoes, veggies, baked apples. Increases agni (digestive
fire), reduces vata and pitta, nourishes all tissues, relieves constipation and
stabilizes moods.
Sesame Oil. Use internal and external. Great for abhyanga for vatas and vata
season. Use the “cold-pressed” kind, not the “toasted” kind or you’ll smell
like Asian food.
Coconut Oil. Great for pitta as it has a cooling effect. Especially great in
warm, dry weather.
Almond Oil. Good for vata and pitta externally. Light enough to use before
bed near the eyes to reduce crow's feet. Great for full body and will not
irritate pitta’s sensitive skin.
Flaxseed Oil. Good for internal oleation and helps with constipation if you
are ghee shy. Don’t heat it. Drizzle on veggies and rice bowls.
Olive Oil. Not talked about much in Ayurveda because Indians don’t have
olive trees...but Greeks and Italians use it liberally (on food and on skin)!
Heading out on a trip should be fun and enjoyable, but packing for that
trip stresses many of us out. Did I remember everything?
Is the suitcase too heavy? How can I maximize space?
Like any art form—preparation and thought go into a well packed bag. Before you pack, create a list of events
to be attended, adventure activities, work and evening gatherings requiring professional or evening attire.
Once you’ve selected clothes to wear, remove one outfit. Let’s face it; no one wears everything they pack. There’s
always something that can be cut. Select more tops than trousers or skirts because you can easily wear bottoms twice.
More tips on how to be a better packer:
1. Suitcase
Lightweight and durable are the criteria to keep in
mind. Unless you’re headed to an extended vacation
(2 weeks plus), a carry-on will alleviate travel stress
and save money. Very few airlines allow a free
checked bag. Checking a bag limits options if a flight
is cancelled or changed.
2. Luggage Scale
It is wise to invest in a residential luggage scale if
you must check a bag. Exceeding the 50-pound
limit is detrimental to your wallet. Making sure
you are under the weight limit prior to airport
arrival is reassuring.
16 WANDER-MAG.COM

LIVE WELL
IMAGE: ©STOCKPHOTOPRO / ADOBESTOCK.COM
3. Photograph & Tag
On both carry-on and checked bags, photograph your
luggage, pack a business card or ID tag inside and
include an external bag tag. When five identical bags
slide down the luggage chute, identify yours with a
distinguishing ribbon, sticker or luggage tag.
4. Clothing
Invest in wrinkle-free, lightweight clothing with a
similar color palette for layering, easy mixing and
matching. Place an extra dryer or scented sheet inside
your bag to reduce unpleasant odors. Pack sturdy,
collapsible travel bags for purchases. Don’t mark
yourself as a robbery target. Expensive jewelry, family
heirlooms and watches stay home.
5. Roll, Roll, Roll
Rolling your clothes saves space while preventing
creases and wrinkles. After rolling, use aircompression
plastic bags to vacuum extra air.
Efficiently packing the heaviest items (jeans, jackets)
at the suitcase bottom. Wrap belts around the edges
of the suitcase to cradle clothing. Fill the suitcase with
lightest clothing at the top (rolling the entire time).
6. Shoes
If you have a shoe fetish, it may be hard to limit
yourself to three pairs of travel shoes: casual pair,
tennis shoes, and evening/professional shoes. Many
experts advise wearing your heaviest pair on the day
of travel to keep suitcase weight low. Shoes go in
shoe bags foot-to-toe, before heavy items, at the very
bottom. If packing shoe soles facing the bag sides,
slide shoes into shower caps or clear plastic bags first.
Place socks and small articles into your deodorized
shoes to save space.
7. Toiletries
Purchase travel sized toiletries under 3.0 ounces, or
use destination amenities. Double-bag all necessary
toiletries (liquids, gels) to prevent stains. Place
this bag at the very top of your carry-on for quick
retrieval at security.
8. Technology
Organize all gadgets, chargers, and cables in a tech
organizer for easy retrieval at security if questions arise.
LIVE WELL
contributed by Mad Hippie Skin Care
IMAGE: ©GTEAM / ADOBESTOCK.COM
Mad Hippie began as a line for surfers who constantly battle sun
damaged skin, so they know a thing or two about restoring lost
moisture and protecting skin. Here are their tips.
First tip: Create the perfect environment for
healthy skin by ensuring that your skin has the right
pH. Have you ever heard of the acid mantle? If not,
you are not alone, but learning about the acid mantle,
and ways in which you can support a healthy acid
mantle, can greatly improve your skin’s ability to stay
hydrated.
The acid mantle is a thin, slightly acidic, oily layer
on the surface of the skin created by the sebaceous
glands. It acts as a protective barrier to stop the
proliferation of bacteria and prevent pathogens that
are not well suited to the acidic environment, from
entering the skin. To protect this natural defense
system, it is important to use cleansers that are nonalkaline
and will not strip the skin of natural oils.
Ensuring that you are using warm, not hot, water will
further preserve the acid mantle.
Next, to further help skin recuperate, we
recommend topping off your daily routine with facial
oil. Your skin will thank you for choosing a skin
balancing oil like Argan oil or pomegranate seed oil,
both of which balance oil production and are great
for all skin types. In addition to locking in moisture,
oils can increase the rate at which active ingredients
are carried into deeper layers of the skin, making
them a great option for use over your favorite serums
or even over a light moisturizer.
18 WANDER-MAG.COM

LIVE WELL
Some of our favorite oils are those that are high in
antioxidants and provide protection from harmful
free radical damage. Pomegranate seed oil is a great
option for sun-damaged skin as it contains high
levels of punicic acid, a powerful anti-inflammatory
with anti-carcinogenic qualities that reduces free
radical damage.
Lastly, don’t stop using your SPF in cloudy
weather. Research from the Skin Cancer
Foundation shows that up to 80% of UV light passes
through clouds meaning that just because cooler
temperatures have arrived, it doesn’t mean that you
can put away your SPF for the season.
We recommend a zinc-only SPF to keep your skin safe
from UV damage year round. Zinc is a mineral that
physically blocks UV light from entering the skin and
is a safe alternative to chemical UV absorbers that are
associated with a variety of health concerns.
The folks at Mad Hippie are passionate about skincare and using only safe,
quality ingredients - putting in only the good stuff and none of the bad.
They also take their responsibility to the planet seriously and are constantly
striving to reduce their footprint, from BPA-free, fully recyclable airless
pumps to running their entire facility off alternative energy.
EAT WELL
IMAGE: ©ALLIANCE / ADOBESTOCK.COM
If you’re like me, you spend much of your day bolting from one thing to
the next, sprinting through tasks, pushing through unanswered emails
and phone calls, while simultaneously attending meetings, believing that
the more you conquer the more you achieve.
Chances are, while you buzzed your way through
your day, you either forgot to eat, or grabbed
anything you could find and mindlessly chowed
down. And, with the holidays here, there’s a good
chance you grabbed the latest holiday cookie or donut
left in the office kitchen, or dipped your hand into the
Halloween candy jar that miraculously continues to
be refilled far past the October 31st date.
Between the hustle and bustle of the daily grind,
combined with the increase in celebration, we often
see an over indulgence in food followed by a New
Year’s resolution to eat better and lose weight.
But this holiday season, consider practicing
mindfulness. If you’re thinking “Mindfulness? I don’t
have time for that!” I get it. The good news is I’m
here to give you realistic and practical tips because
I understand that not all of us have the time (or
want to spend the time) reaching our Zen in a quiet
dark space for 30+ minutes each day. Mindfulness
is all about just being present in the moment. Being
more aware of our surroundings, even if those
surroundings are noisy and chaotic! When we are
mindful we can channel that into all of the decisions
we make during the day, such as our food choices.
EAT WELL
IMAGE: ©CONTRASTWERKSTATT / ADOBESTOCK.COM
If you find yourself reaching for food in a moment of stress or haste, stop and take a breath. Literally take just
one moment. It can be as little as 30 seconds. And, before you take a bite, ask yourself first, are you eating out
of hunger or are you looking to fill something else? If the answer is the latter try and take another big breath
or two, or take a short walk. If you establish that you are in fact hungry, try and consider some of the following
steps to eat with mindfulness and intention.
Listen.
Pay attention to hunger cues. Eat when you’re
hungry and stop when you’re full. If we listen to
our body’s signals about hunger, fullness, and
appetite, we will know better when to stop eating.
Be Aware.
Even when you’re at a party or at the office
luncheon be aware of the foods you’re reaching for.
Look for whole foods. Build your plate around greens
and plant-based options. And be mindful of your
portions.
Relax.
If possible, try and take time to sit and enjoy a meal.
Ideally you could spend at least 20 minutes with your
food but even just 5 or 10 will do. And, try not to let
yourself become to ravenously hungry before sitting
down to eat.
Breathe.
Try taking three deep breaths before you begin your
meal and one deep breath in-between each bite. It’s
also important to stop other distractions (close your
computer, put away your phone) and just sit in silence
or with company and appreciate your food.
Chew.
The very first step in digestion is the mechanical
mastication in the mouth (A.K.A. chewing). If you’re
not thinking about it, you probably only chew about
3-10 times before swallowing. You can try to aim for
around 25 chews before swallowing. This will likely
feel like a lot initially.
EAT WELL
As I mentioned before, while chewing each bite of
food for 25 times or sitting unplugged for 20 minutes
would be ideal, it’s not reality for many of us. Mindful
eating is more than just eating slowly. Mindful eating
is being aware of what, why, and how you eat. If
you’re in a rush and running out the door consider
mindful eating to be not how long it takes you to eat
but what you’re choosing.
Paying attention to what we’re eating can make a
huge difference. It’s the multiple, small instances and
mindful approach at every meal that amount to you
living and feeling your best.
A really simple and easy on-the-go option is a
nutritious shake, such as Vega One. Vega One is a
blend of protein, veggies and greens, vitamins and
minerals, fiber, Omega-3 ALA, antioxidants A, C and
E and probiotics. And by simply taking 2 minutes of
your day to shake it with water or 5 minutes to blend
into a smoothie, Vega One allows you to easily get your
nutrition on the go and feel good about your choice.
Wheatgrass C leanser
Makes about 1 cup (250 mL)
Sweet and salty, with a slight kick from the ginger, this is a beautifully balanced juice, loaded with
chlorophyll and a wide range of nutrients. It does, however, pack quite a punch, so you’ll want to
introduce this highly nutritious juice into your diet slowly.
Tips
To peel ginger root quickly and easily, simply use the edge of a teaspoon. Scrape it back and forth
along the root to remove the skin and reveal the yellow flesh underneath. While we recommend
using fresh wheatgrass juice in this recipe, you’ll also get great results with frozen organic
wheatgrass shots (available in the freezer section of most health food stores). If you are juicing
wheatgrass yourself, be sure to do it before juicing the celery and ginger, so it’s ready to whisk
in immediately.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
IMAGE: ©ISTOCKPHOTO.COM/KIRIN_PHOTO
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 1⁄8-inch (3 mm) piece peeled gingerroot
2 oz. (60ml) wheatgrass juice
Using a juicer, process celery and ginger.
Add wheatgrass juice and whisk well. Serve
immediately.
Juice Guru’s Tips
We recommend drinking only 1 cup (250 mL) of this juice per day because of wheatgrass’s
incredible vitamin and mineral content. A little is all you need. Some people find the taste of
wheatgrass too sweet, and it can even elicit a gag reflex. If this happens to you, just take it slowly.
Once you start consuming wheatgrass on a regular basis (two to three times a week), you will
build up a tolerance—as will your taste buds.
Holy Basil Supreme
Makes about 3 cups (750 mL)
This juice tastes similar to a bowl of warm tomato
basil soup on a cold winter day. The tried-andtrue
flavors will remind you of home. Tomato
provides a rich, creamy flavor, apples bring a touch
of sweetness, celery adds a tinge of saltiness,
and fragrant basil complements it all perfectly.
Tomatoes provide potassium and the carotenoids
alpha- and beta-carotene and lycopene. The
lycopene in tomatoes has been shown to reduce
the risk for heart disease, cataracts and macular
degeneration.
Tip
Never peel the skin from your apples before
juicing. Apple skin contains an abundance of
phytonutrient polyphenols, which help to regulate
blood sugar.
Ingredients:
3 red apples, cored and sliced
1 celery stalk, chopped
15 sprigs fresh parsley
(about 1⁄2 bunch; see Caution, below)
1 tomato, quartered
20 drops organic holy basil extract
Instructions:
Using a juicer, process half each of the apples,
celery, parsley and tomato. Following the same
order, repeat with the remaining apples, celery,
parsley and tomato.
Add holy basil extract and whisk. Serve
immediately.
Caution
Certain phytonutrients in parsley—in concentrated
amounts, as they are in juices—may act as a
uterine stimulant and should likely be avoided
during pregnancy. Because of the concentrated
amount of oxalate it contains, parsley juice should
also be avoided by people with kidney stones or a
history of kidney stones.
Big Blue
Makes about 2 cups (500 mL)
Your kids will love the color of this blue juice and its
sweet taste—they’re out of this world (not to mention
nutritious)! The berries combine with the apples
and beet to create a sweet, tangy and vibrant flavor
experience. Blueberries provide vitamins C and K, as
well as manganese, and have been shown to benefit
cognition and support cardiovascular health. Beets
contain folate, potassium, copper and iron.
Ingredients:
3 red apples, cored and sliced
1⁄4 beet, halved
1 cup (250 ml) blueberries
Instructions:
Using a juicer, process half each of the apples, beet
and blueberries. Following the same order, repeat with
the remaining fruit. Whisk well and serve immediately.
Pioneer Gingerbread
Serves 10 to 12
As a child I was a big fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the
Prairie series, and some of my favorite parts of those books are the
descriptions of what they ate. Almanzo’s childhood culinary recollections
in Farmer Boy are particularly vivid. It sort of sounds like a nonstop yearlong
dinner party! A few years ago I was fortunate to come across on the
Internet a letter Laura, at that time in her 90s, sent to a friend in 1953,
enclosing her recipe for gingerbread. It’s been a labor of love to create a
healthier version of this pioneer treat that still does justice to the original
flavor, but leaves out the eggs and lard.
Ingredients:
3 cups whole-grain flour (I like spelt)
1 tbsp. each: baking powder, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and allspice
½ tsp each of: nutmeg, cloves and salt
1 cup maple syrup
½ cup applesauce
¾ cup molasses
2 tbsp. white vinegar
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda,
ginger, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves and salt in a medium bowl.
Put maple syrup, applesauce, molasses and white vinegar in a second
medium bowl. Bring kettle of water to a boil. Once boiling, remove from
heat and add 1 cup hot water to the wet ingredients, and stir.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients while mixing, but be
careful to not over-stir. The mixture should be quite thin.
Transfer batter to a 9 x 13–inch glass pan, and bake for 35 minutes.
Serve and enjoy!
Simple Split Pea Comfort Soup
Serves 2-4
Curl up on the sofa with a good book and a great split pea soup to stay warm. The world offers many
delicious versions of split pea soup to try, however this comfort soup is absolutely delicious as is. If you’re
feeling adventurous, you can use this as your basic starter recipe and branch out in any number
of interesting directions. Soup doesn’t get any simpler than this.
Ingredients:
1 cup split peas
1 medium onion, diced
1 medium carrot, diced
1 medium celery rib, diced
1 medium potato, diced
1 tbsp. vegetable stock base
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
Soak your split peas for 4 to 6 hours, or even longer,
if possible, to ensure a shorter cooking time.
Drain the split peas, and place them in a large pot
in 8 cups water without salt. Cook over high heat
for 15-20 minutes or until boiling. Reduce heat to
a simmer, partially covered, for 20 minutes or until
peas are tender.
Add remaining ingredients and return to a boil.
Reduce heat to a simmer, partially covered, for 15
or until vegetables are tender.
Driving the scenic country roads of Caledon, Ontario on a
postcard-worthy Autumn day, I felt excited, but a little anxious
- this would be my first retreat and I wasn’t really sure what to
expect. The promotional material listed yoga, meditation and
soul writing (yes, yes, and yes!) but also journey dance and nature
bathing, which I admit to imagining as having to strip down and
dance ceremoniously around a bonfire.
I tried not to overthink it ahead of time. Still,
questions like, “as much as I complain about
our kids’ attachment to their screens, will I
realize I miss my devices too? and, will I feel
uncomfortable?” crept up on me. We were
asked not to bring electronic devices or scented
products; I decided to leave my judgements at
home for the weekend too.
After arriving and settling in (I was sharing a
room with a dear friend, craftily avoiding the
solo experience my first time around), Roberta,
the retreat facilitator and a shamanic healing
practitioner, warmly welcomed us and laid the
groundwork for what would be more sharing of
the ancient wisdom of teachings that have been
passed on for thousands of years.
That evening’s sacred circle bonfire encouraged
us to cleanse our energy fields and release
what wasn’t serving us any longer, so we could
welcome in new desires and blessings. Though
the smudging rituals and drumming ceremonies
were new to me, I found them incredibly comforting
and primal, almost like an instinctual déjà vu.
Over the weekend, we embarked on a shamanic
healing journey to powerful drumming sounds to
retrieve our power animals, an experience that I was
surprised to find quite emotional. We also created our
personal medicine wheels, the basis of healing for our
deepest selves.
Yoga sessions and the opportunity to connect on a
heart level with other retreat goers were layered with
delicious, nourishing meals. And blessedly, there was
coffee, perfect for warming up before a brisk morning
meditative walk. The surrounding forest, with its
purposeful stone circles, could not have been more
perfect for connecting with a deep sense of peace and
that “all-is-good-in-the world” feeling.
Though I had hoped to at least meet some likeminded
people, I found a group of wonderful, funny,
creative and wise women, and a new appreciation
for connecting the “old-fashioned” way. I also came
to the realization through the work that becoming
my best self is a lifelong project, not something I
can complete and check off my list (as someone who
really enjoys checklists, this was huge).
I went on retreat looking for time away from my
work and family responsibilities to reflect spiritually
and connect inwards; I left for home feeling calm,
refreshed and deeply grateful for my life. For anyone
considering a retreat for the first time, I’d say throw
your concerns to the wind and go for it.
If you’re in the Ontario area, we recommend connecting with Roberta Robbins, a passionate life coach,
spiritual mentor, shamanic healing practitioner, registered massage therapist, and creator and facilitator of
the Wise Sacred Woman Sisterhood Circle. Roberta offers personal soul sessions, workshops, retreats and
classes to help you reclaim your voice, your passion, and to speak and live your authentic truth.
For several years the hotel has offered wellness
programs that add a sense of Zen and mindfulness to
the magical setting of the hotel. The program featured
several yoga and mindfulness retreats under direction
of Tracey Delfs, passionate yoga and mindfulness
instructor and long-time student of world-renowned
Zen and mindfulness master Thich Nhat Hanh.
Additional program highlights included photography
workshops and tours, as well as adventures with
Casey Anderson, wildlife naturalist, host and
executive producer of Expedition WILD on National
Geographic’s WILD television channel. The wellness
program obviously struck a chord with the hotel’s
international guest base. Although launched in a
quiet, elegant manner without a lot of media buzz,
the retreats didn’t go unnoticed and sold out quickly.
Not a surprise.
Time has evolved into a new luxury and with limited
vacation time more and more people are looking for
holistic travel experiences that leave them invigorated
and renewed physically, mentally and spiritually. A
new generation of travelers expects resorts to provide
well-rounded programs that cover a broad spectrum
of activities ranging from high-energy fitness classes
and outdoor adventures to meditative, introspective
classes that help guests stay in the moment and
enhance their precious vacation experience.
For this coming season, the Fairmont Chateau Lake
Louise decided to top up its wellness offerings by
adding more variety and bringing in renowned health
and wellness professionals as retreat facilitators.
Under the motto “Reclaim Your Health” a new
program spearheaded by Dr. Eva Selhub, renowned
mindbody expert, medical doctor and resilience
coach, will address four pillars of optimum health
and wellness: Stress Management & Resilience,
Nutrition & Fitness, Authentic Happiness & Creative
Flow and Mindfulness & Spiritual Awareness.
The program will feature a number of wellness
retreats throughout the year, each one focusing on
a specific aspect of health, wellbeing and happiness.
Guests looking for centering, holistic wellness
experiences that complement their stay in a truly
TRAVEL WELL
Canada is a must-do on any adventure traveler’s bucketlist.
Named the number one country to visit in 2017
by Lonely Planet, Canada is famous for breathtaking
mountains, magical white winters and maple syrup, having
more lakes than all other countries combined, (really wild)
wildlife and a delightful reputation for politeness.
If you visit anywhere in Canada in this winter, it’s highly
recommended that you take a drive up the renowned Sea
To Sky Highway and visit the mountain resort of
Whistler, British Columbia.
Summit Lodge is a boutique hotel in Whistler with a big goal: to improve the health and wellbeing
of the plant by getting people outdoors, one person at a time. They believe that to take
care of others and the environment we must first take care of ourselves. Most people will wait
until the New Year to change the daily habits that could be having negative effects on their
health, but they think there’s no better time to start than right now!
MEET
I’d like to be known as
someone who truly helped people to live well,
showed up for the people she loved,
and enjoyed life while doing it!
What does a perfect Sunday look like to you?
MK Sleeping until I wake up, going out to breakfast
with my husband (known as my “Mr. O”), taking a hike
up the mountain or a walk on the beach, going to the
farmer’s market (ideally) or grocery store, and then
preparing “Sunday dinner” for family and friends.
Zany (or strange!) travel experience you
can share?
MK One of my favorites was at the border control
upon entering Bali back in 2007. It was 5 years after
the bombings in Bali which greatly impacted their
tourism. The border control agent – appearing
very serious at the time - saw my US passport,
sized me up and down and then opened his arms
and said “Whattttsss-upppppppp?” in the voice of
those famous frogs made popular by the Budweiser
commercials featured during the Super Bowl. He
proceeded to tell me how excited he was to welcome
an American back into his country and embraced me
in a huge hug. I couldn’t believe it!
We’re having a potluck dinner. What do
you bring?
MK PIE. It’s a dying art and one I take seriously. Apple,
Blueberry, Lemon Meringue and my personal favorite,
dark chocolate custard cream pie, are my specialties.
Go-to comfort at the end of the day?
MK An Epsom salt bath with essential oils and the
latest copy of People Magazine (it’s brain candy!).
What’s in your carry on?
MK Laptop, earbuds, sunglasses, umbrella, a
selection of herbal teas and Starbucks Via packs,
mints, a shaker bottle with Greek Girl Beauty Protein
(my latest health craze), apples, dry roasted nuts,
journal, notebook and a jump drive with all my latest
work. My other carry on has sneakers, workout gear
and any professional clothes I may need. Boring, I
know, but it works!
Best wellness tip?
MK Waking up and spending 10-15 minutes
journaling before looking at my mobile phone or
email or turning on the news. I find it’s a great way
to manage stress, document great ideas, and clean
out whatever good or bad is happening in the subconscious.
Think of it like an “active meditation.” It
really works.
What excites you about your company?
MK The diversity! I have clients that range from
hotel and travel companies to 3rd party operators,
spas and health resorts, wellness communities,
consumer-packaged goods and healthy lifestyle
companies. And after two decades of working in
what I like to call the “business of wellness”, it’s nice
to see the legitimacy of what’s now considered a $3.7
trillion-dollar marketplace including many of the
brands and concepts I’ve had the honor of helping
along the way.
What do you want your legacy to be?
MK I’d like to be known as someone who truly
helped people to live well, showed up for the people
she loved, and enjoyed life while doing it!
