We’ve all heard the phrase, “Money can’t buy
happiness.” In life, we have all found this phrase to be
true on a number of occasions. However, when you try
to say this quote to someone who doesn’t have two
nickels to rub together, it certainly takes on a different
connotation. Elizabeth Dunn, Professor of Psychology
at the University of British Columbia, and Michael
Norton, Professor of Marketing at the Harvard business
school, coauthored Happy Money. In their book, they
challenge the belief that money can’t buy happiness.
I’d like to share their thoughts with you this month.
Dunn and Norton’s research showed that most
people believed that if their income were to double,
their happiness would do the same. For example,
if one’s annual salary was $25,000 and then they
received an increase to $50,000, their happiness
would also double. However, their findings showed

As I write this article, the
Third Annual Gobble Wobble
5K Run/Walk is only a few
days away. The enthusiastic
committee is busy preparing
for a tremendous event.
So far, over 1000 have preregistered
for the race. I will
include a follow-up of the
event in the next issue. It is
looking like we will surpass the
fundraising amount by leaps
and bounds over last year. The
proceeds support the North
Dearborn and Sunman Food
Pantries. This year’s T-shirt
slogan is Huffin’ for Stuffin’
believes in strongly! Simply stated, yes, happiness can
be bought. Although, happiness can be bought, they
noted that there are only a handful of items that can
be purchased that will create happiness.

experiences. Does this ring true in your own life? It
does in mine. So even after the tree has been boxed
up, and all the lights have been put away for the

Halloween and Thanksgiving
are things of the past and we are
gearing up for Christmas shopping
and tree hunting. When
this article comes out I will have,
according to my husband, circled
the tree farm several times
looking for the perfect tree.
He says I usually go back and
get the first tree I picked at the
beginning of our venture. We
have chopped down our own
tree ever since we have moved
back to Greendale. It is hard to
believe it has been 48 trees ago
that we have continued this tradition
through rain, sleet, snow
and even warm weather.
I can’t believe I am talking
about Christmas. Greendale
announced starting Nov. 1 that
pool passes can be purchased
for gifts for the 2017 season
-- $50 for residents and $80 for
non-residents. They make nice
gifts for teenagers.
I know Halloween is over
but I have to acknowledge
Grant and Edna Hughes’
Halloween display. Their home
is on Ridge across from the
Greendale utility building. Lots
of work went into decorating
of their front yard. Loved the
blow up inflated characters.

Lawrenceburg’s football
team went to the state in Indianapolis
after a nail-biting game.
Hunter Privett, number 43, of
Greendale, caught a one-handed
pass to put Lawrenceburg
in the lead again with minutes
left to play. In the end Brownstown
missed a two-point conversion
and Lawrenceburg won
41 to 40. Way to go guys!
