are 2 family favorites from over
the years that appear on our
table most holiday seasons.
I use the following recipe
for Brussels Sprouts all year
long. The recipe appeared in a
holiday cookbook from some
30 years ago and we’ve enjoyed
it since that very first time.

Brussels Sprouts with
Balsamic Vinegar
1 ½ pounds fresh Brussels
Sprouts
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, sliced
1 medium onion, sliced thinly
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Trim Brussels sprouts and
cut into half lengthwise if large
Blanch in boiling water for
5 minutes and then drain and
rinse with cold water. Drain
again.
Heat skillet over medium
heat and add oil. Add onion
and garlic and sauté until onion
is tender.
Add blanched Brussels
sprouts and cook until desired
doneness.
Add vinegar and toss. Add
butter, salt and pepper and toss.
Years ago, we, along with a
group of friends had season
tickets to the Northern
Kentucky Community
Symphony. We took turns
preparing a light dinner before
the concert in our homes and
then enjoyed the concert. This
dessert was a hit and we often
enjoy it sometime during the
holiday season.

FCCLA Girls’ Night planned
'East Central FCCLA’s 3rd annual Girls' Night is Jan. 27
and is open to all Sunman-Dearborn Middle School female
students. This is a free event, but donations are welcome.
There are games, delicious food, and inspirational workshops
that encompass cyber bullying, drug/alcohol awareness,
healthy relationships, and self-image. Forms for the event
were sent home and will be will need to be printed, filled out
by a parent or guardian, and turned in to the SDMS office by
Dec. 16.

½ cup walnuts
½ cup sugar
Butter for greasing the 9inch
pie plate
Batter
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
¼ teaspoon salt
2 eggs
3/4 cup butter, melted then
cooled
¼ teaspoon almond extract
Chop cranberries and
nuts in food processor. Put
cranberries into bowl and add
½ cup sugar. Mix then press
into bottom of 9-inch pie
plate.
For batter: Mix 2 eggs,
the melted butter, flour and
sugar in medium bowl using a
spoon. Add salt and almond
extract. Stir until smooth and
then pour over the cranberry
mixture.
Bake the dessert at 350
degrees for 40 minutes or until
toothpick comes out clean.
Good when served warm with
whipped cream or whipped
topping or may be served
plain.

Enjoy a live
Christmas tree
Too often, we use the same
terms which have different meanings
for each of us. Someone
told me they were purchasing a
live Christmas tree, and I talked
about digging the hole and how
deep it should be planted. They
stopped me, and said no, they
were going out to cut a Christmas
tree. I was assuming that
a live Christmas tree had roots;
I was thinking about a tree that
could be purchased as a balled-in
burlap tree. They were talking
about a tree that was alive that
they were going to a farm to cut.
Now that we were on the
same page, I asked: Where are
you going to get it? How tall
a tree are you looking for? Do
you have a way to haul it? Then
I try to add insight so they have
a good experience. If you purchase
a tree that has been cut
for more than six to eight hours,
cut a half inch or so off the
butt end before placing it in the
stand. When they are cut ahead
of the purchase, the end seals
over and will not uptake water
and you get to experience the
early dropping of needles inside
the house. If you buy a tree,
but don’t plan to set it up for a
few days, store it in a cool location
out of the wind and sun.
The stand must hold an ample
supply of water, at least one
quart for each inch of stem diameter.
Keep filling it using cool
water. Larger trees obviously
require more water and a larger,
heavy-duty stand. A seven-foot
tree may easily use two quarts of
water daily the first week. Trees
take a lot of water the first week
or two, then slow down. If the
tree runs out of water, it loses
its ability to take-up water and
starts to dry out. Then you must
take the tree down and make
a fresh cut on the base of the
stem. It’s easier for me to check
the water each day, usually twice
each day, for the first week.
Before I went on my way,
I had to go back to my first
thought bringing in a balled-in
burlap tree, cautioning them
that it requires a lot of advance
preparation for only a short
time of about three days in the
house. You would want to dig a
hole in advance and put the soil
removed in a wheelbarrow and
fill the hole with straw or mulch
to allow it to be easily opened.
This avoids digging through
possible frozen ground.
No matter which route you
choose, always plan before
purchasing and you will enjoy
your Christmas tree the entire
season.

Students collect items for veterans
Mrs. Dennis' first grade class at North Dearborn Elementary collected
items needed by Cincinnati Veterans Hospital for sick and homeless Veterans
as part of our Service Learning this year. They also drew pictures and
wrote notes thanking the Veterans for their service.
The Pantry has broken ground on our new warehouse, located
behind our existing building at 2517 North Dearborn Rd, West
Harrison 47060. We were able to get concrete poured before
the really cold weather started and we are continuing to
negotiate the best deal we can to construct the building. In
addition to our generous Dearborn Community Foundation
Grant, we need to raise money for shelving, electric, gas, and
blacktop work. This is the time of year when you might be
looking for 2016 tax deductible donations. We can provide you
with all the necessary tax receipts and are a fully deductible
501c3 organization. Keep your donations here in the community
to help your community. Like us on Facebook for updates. We
are looking for volunteers of all ages; you can sign up for as little
as 1 shift a month.
