HIMHERANDIT PRODUCTIONS
Himherandit Productions make performances that push, provoke and
engage audiences into a discourse around important subject matters.
Continuously stretching artistic boundaries by experimenting with
personal boarders and vulnerabilities.
Our practice addresses the social politics of bodies in society and manifests
into visual dance performances that range from solo to group
works, on stages or site specific locations. We create daring, meaningful
and confrontational performances that demand an audience’s attention
through reflection and thought provocation.
Himherandit Productions aim to create a space for the marginalized,
disregarded, diverse and queer. Creating a space for uniqueness, individuality
and diversity by bringing topics of non-heteronormative genders,
sexualities and identities to the front of the public arena.
Himherandit Productions is led by artistic director, choreographer and
performance artist Andreas Constantinou and was founded in 2003.
Since 2003 Himherandit productions have presented a range of dynamic
performances at both local and international levels. Selected Performances
have toured in festivals and theatres worldwide including: Denmark,
UK, Iceland, Greece, Italy, Cyrpus, France, Luxembourg, Bulgaria,
Croatia, Finaland, Taiwan, Switzerland, Czech of Republic, Spain, Germany
and Portugal.
“Himherandit Productions performances will challenge and interrogate
you as an audience member. I leave the production disturbed by the brutality,
but moreover shocked at the effectiveness of the content performed”
THE GENDERHOUSE PROJECTS
2013-2018
The GENDERhouse Projects are a series of yearly performances and community
projects based around topics of gender in today’s society. The projects span out
over a six-year period and lead towards a grand finale in 2018 titled The GEN-
DERhouse Retrospective.
The GENDERhouse projects are designed to develop yearly cultural investigation
through performance based activities in which meeting points between
audiences and subject matter take focus to ignite reflection and thought provocation
on current gender debates. The six-year project contains 7 professional
performances that span out between 2013-2018, 2 community projects and a
grand finale retrospective.
Where it all began:
In 2013 Andreas Constantinou ignited The GENDERhouse projects with the
drive and ambition to create a platform where national and international audiences
could spark dialogue and discourse around important gender topics. This
was aimed at giving voice to the marginalized and promoting diversity while
challenging and questioning our social attitudes towards modern day genders.
What is it to be man today? What is it to be masculine? Is masculinity separate
from being male? What about femininity? What is it to be woman today? Do our
bodies define our genders? Can we think beyond a binary state of gender?
Asking such questions served as the starting points to map out a series of yearly
performances and community projects that tackle such subject matters and offer
an authentic discussion, unafraid of asking awkward questions.
The six-year program therefore includes a wide range of artistic activities to embrace
a wide demographic of audiences from contrasting ages, cultures and sexualities.
Doing so aims to raise a full rounded discourse that addresses the voices
of todays’ people. From playfulness, to critical thinking, each of our projects cultivates
an artistic discussion around gender that offer a platform for audiences’
reflection.
WoMAN & WOMAN
2016
WoMAN & WOMAN is the fith installment of The GENDERhouse Projects.
WoMAN & WOMAN are two new solo works presented as a double program.
Side by side they blend performance, physical theatre and dance into a wild
and visual experience. The performances are created in collaboration with two
contrasting performers. Both works are based on the subject of femininity.
WoMAN is a transformative solo created and performed by Andreas Constantinou.
This poetic work uses a rich visual language to invoke a lucid landscape
of feminine architypes. From the virgin to the crone, between animal
and human, images unfold as the performer morphs inside an intimate setting
of petals and grass. Set to an original music score and created in collaboration
with the dutch composer Marlou Vriens, the music fills the theatre with
ghostly echoes that shift between divine choir-like melodies and atmospheric
soundscapes. “WoMAN” is a visually powerful solo work that sees one male
performer embark on a quest to find his own feminine self.
WOMAN is an uncompromising solo and a personal response to the question
“what does femininity mean to you?”, posed to a trans performer Daniel
Mariblanca. Full of fire, resistence and hope, “WOMAN” sees a trans mans
relationship to socially perceived femininity come to life. Deeply personal and
playful, this solo challenges expectations of the feminine universe in a search
for individual and authentic gender expression.
Back to back these two new solos’ serve as a platform for displaying two different
perspectives and relationships to the feminine. Bluring the lines between
what we socially perceive as femininity and toying with the binary gender systems.
****** – Den4væg
“Through a mixture of dance, physical theater and performance, the two solos
an intimate and intense study of gender and body. They show how the
body in different ways represent the sexes, and they do so through the use of
beautiful visual expression, symbolism and sound. Their androgynous bodies
playing with the physical appearance and the gestures we normally associate
with equality. WOMAN WOMAN clearly shows how sex itself is a form of
performance, which is subject to certain social norms about the movements
and expressions. The two performers pushing their bodies to the limit, which
is beautiful and breathtaking, but also raw and brutal. This can be seen especially
in as Danni Mariblance performs the same monotonous and violent
motion over and over, managing to transform the body into a kind of machine
that eventually stands alone, without any sex.”
The WOMANhouse
2015
The WOMANhouse is the fourth installment of The GENDERhouse Projects.
The WOMANhouse sees four powerfully athletic female performers transform
themselves into men. Acting like typical blokes - with beards and all - they stir
up fights and frenzy. Questioning masculinity in female bodies, they tear up
stereotypical ideas about what it is to be a man - and about what female bodies
might do. Tender, aggressive, sexy, blurry - this show crosses all the lines.
In 2015 The WOMANhouse was selected as part of Aerowaves, a renowned
dance platform comprising of over 40 of Europe’s most important programmers.
Aerowaves named Andreas Constantinou as one of the 20 most exciting
emerging choreographers in Europe in 2016. As a result The WOMANhouse
has been touring through Europe and continues to tour into 2017.
AWARD: For the second year in a row Andreas Constantinou is awarded by
the Danish Arts Council Scholarship Committee for his work on The WOM-
ANhouse in 2015. The committee wrote:
“Choreographer and Performer Andreas Constantinou is a new exciting name
on the Danish and international performance and dance scene. With his sixyear
performance-research project GENDERhouse, Andreas explores the link
between gender, sexuality and society. The Woman House is the latest result
of this research. The show, which was a quartet of four women dressed as men
dressed as women, emphatically and humorously challenged the stereotypical
gender roles and sexuality. The Woman House” was a power show, which left
the audience breathless and enriched.”
ReDoing GENDER 1.5
2015
ReDoing GENDER 1.5 is third part of The GENDERhouse projects and premiered
in 2015.
ReDoing GENDER was initially created in 2014 with the titled ReDoing GEN-
DER 1.0. After the initial completion and premiere of this solo, Andreas returned
back to the studio to further develop this solo work further as he felt
there was more to discovered. This resulted into a brand new refined edition of
the solo which took on the new title ReDoing GENDER 1.5.
ReDoing GENDER 1.5 premiered in 2015 and tackles the themes of the patriarchal
male gaze and the limitations it poses to queer masculinities. The solo
comments on essentialist vs constructionist gender theories (also known as
nature vs nurture theories).
In this solo viewers witness an ape in a correction facility undergoing a gender
conditioning experiment. What follows are a series of events that lead to
a climax of absurd reality. This solo questions normative and non normative
male gender roles, from classical sculptures of male ideals, feminized frolics, a
box headed individual, to a full blown crying baby with a mans body. ReDoing
GENDER is filled with intense imagery that displays one mans search for an
identity amid the gaze of a patriarchal society.
In 2014 ReDoing GENDER won an award for artistic excellance from the Danish
Arts Council’s Scholarship committee. The committee said about the work:
“The performance Redoing Gender marks Andreas Constantinou, as a new exciting
name on the physical and visual performance scene in Denmark. In an
intimate, naked and fascinating universe queer and masculine identity is tackled
with in loving treatment. An entertaining work that both gives the audience
something to think about and leaves them wanting to see more.”
ReDoing GENDER 1.0
2014
ReDoing GENDER 1.0 is the second parts of The GENDERhouse projects and
premiered in 2014.
ReDoing GENDER 1.0 is the original version of ReDoing GENDER 1.5. In this
raw and quirky solo Andreas takes to the stage to explore his queer masculine
identity. Toying with masculine and feminine architypes, he morphs between
greek sculptural figures of the mighty heroic image of Zues to a queered version
of Aphorodite herself.
The stage is covered with a circle of sand that gets bigger and bigger as Andreas
dances through it. The sand echoes that of a gladiators arena, to an isolated
beach, a space of ambiuity. In this arena he fights and frenzies to discover his
own true masculine identity. Equiped with a measuring tape and blond wig he
battles it out, measuring himself, the space he takes and the expectations he is
told to live up too.
In a surreal turn of events when fight reaches climax, a breakdown foloows as
he transforms into a crying man with full fitted baby mask. A metaphorical
figure of the inadequate male identity. The queer identity that can never live
up to the patriarchal expectation of normative masculinity. What follows is a
redoing of his own gender to lead towards a freer future.
In 2014 ReDoing GENDER won an award for artistic excellance from the Danish
Arts Council’s Scholarship committee. The committee said about the work:
“The performance Redoing Gender marks Andreas Constantinou, as a new exciting
The MANhouse
2013
The MANhouse was the first performance created as part of The GENDERhouse
in 2013.
In The MANhouse two male performers meet on stage to confront their ideas
and perceptions of what masculinity means to them. The two performers from
contrasting backgrounds and of different sexual orientations. One a homosexual
dance artist and the other heterosexual theatre maker. Together they meet
for the making of this performance, confronting each other with different view
points on what masculinity means to the each of them.
The result is a quirky yet dissonant physical theatre performance that witnesses
two identities fighting for understanding of the subject matter.
Talking GENDERS Youth Project / Exhibition
2016
Talking GENDERS Youth Project / Exhibition was the first community project
as part of The GENDERhouse Projects and premiered in 2016.
Since the dawn of time woman and men have questioned each other’s existence.
Countless hours, days, years and decades have been spent wondering
about our differences and similarities. This curiosity has undoubtedly played a
dominant role through the history of humanity. We have created infinite theories
and philosophies on what gender is, how it’s formed and how it plays out
in autonomous and social contexts.
The Talking Genders Exhibition accumulates the multidisciplinary artwork
of 10 young artists between the ages of 16-26 . The work features a fresh and
youthful perspective from a raw and visceral angle and ignites a platform that
allows audiences to be challenged by young persons’ viewpoints on the themes
of gender, sexuality and identity of today.
The young artists’ artworks have been developed as part of a summer intensive
program conducted by Himherandit Productions. The program offered the
group of young artists a creative process in which artistic learning was cultivated
communities. It is said to be a time full of clarity, wisdom and security. Adulthood
into senior years are when men and woman have defined the ground
they walk on, the roads of life they have chosen to walk, found their voices
and contributed to their families, communities and societies. This stage of life
holds a wealth of knowledge to the way we view the world. For this very reason
we recruit ten senior individuals to creatively dialogue about their views on
gender today.
Have their viewpoints on gender, sexuality and identities adapted with the
times? Do traditional views on gender weight down strong or does liberation
come with our rapidly evolving social politics? With these questions in mind,
each participant will manifest their own unique expressions into a collection
of visual artworks for talking genders senior exhibition.
TRANSgenderHOUSE
2018
TRANSgenderHOUSE is the seventh and final performance of The GENDERhouse
projects due to premiere in 2018 as part of The GENDERhouse grand
finale retrospective.
For this final performance Himherandit Productions invites trans artist Daniel
Mariblanca to be the choreographer/directer of TRANSgenderHOUSE.
TransGenderHouse is a performance created by trans choreogrpher on four
fantastic transgender artists. Both, a multidisciplinary and international work;
incorporating corporal expression, dance theater and live music. This autobiographical
work will be performed and explained in first person, drawing from
the sincerity and experience of each artist. Drawing from their empowerment,
their pain and how this enriches the diversity of the human spectrum.
What does that means to be TransGender? Can you imagine the daily life of
a transgender person? In the end, what makes you feel male or female? What
makes you exist within yourself and in society?
Transgender identities have existed since the beginning of time. There are records
from the Brazilian Indian tribes, where society considered this individual
as something divine. However, in our times institutionalized pathology,
brings stigmatization to the trans collective. Fortunately this is changing, and
Denmark was the first European country in removing transsexuality as a pathology.
The goal of this project is to uplift, demonstrate and give perspective to the
Trans people and their experiences. Not only to expose and confront everyday
problems in society, but to also investigate the internal contradictions of each
artist. At the same time giving a voice to this minority oppressed by a binarist
and cisgender system. Transgenderhouse is essential to creating an open dialogue.
Making this realities accessible to the general public and create a more
open, healthy and inclusive society.
G.A.R.D.E.N
2017
G.A.R.D.E.N is the sixth installment of The GENDERhouse Projects and will
world premiere in 2017.
G.A.R.D.E.N is an immersive performance installation, that invigorates the
audience to an epic journey of surreal encounters and an embodied investigation
of gender identity, sexuality and intimacy. This immersive performance
features one on one performance, sound and video installation and aims to
push the boundaries of traditional performance viewing by placing audience
participation into the heart of the artwork.
In this immersive work unlike all our previous staged performances, we now
invite audiences into participatory experiences where they get to experience
embodied states of gender, sexuality and identity first hand. This is acheived
through setting up a hands on immersive theatrical environment that requires
audiences engagement through interactive private one to one performance experiences.
The work is loosely inspired by the adventures of Alice in Wonderland. Inspired
by her search and journey of self discovery through corridors, rooms,
and finally into a GARDEN. In this journey of absurd realities she is confronted
with her changing self unfolding around her, where her personal identity
and borders constantly tested. With this as inspiration our immersive performance
of GARDEN will take individual audience members on such a journey
through illogical, and bizzare rooms that lead to an idellic final destination, a
GARDEN.
