President Trump by John O’ Brien
The Simpson’s had an episode where Lisa Simpson was the President of the
United States. In this episode she
stated she had to fix the economy
due to the fact that President Donald
Trump had made a mess of things. At
the time the idea of a President Donald
Trump was a joke. Now in 2016 Donald
Trump is the President elect. There has
been a lot written about this election and
the victory of President Trump. Some of
the commentary has been personal. I don’t
think personalised commentary helps us in understanding what is happening
in the United States. Historical movements and political decisions have made the possibility of a Trump
Presidency a reality.
After the Wall Street Crash of 1929 the democratic world decided slowly to change economic policy.
The New Deal of FDR showed the democratic world that governments have a role to play in producing
an economy that benefits the majority of the people. After the 2nd World War major democratic
governments made this new consensus into practical policy. Full employment became government
policy. Workers sought to improve their lives and join the middle class. Farmers income was secured,
the family farm was protected. Businesses expanded and grew especially small and new businesses. The
middle class became stronger during this era. Some people called this era a golden age. It wasn’t perfect
but it gave society stability, hope and growth.
Beginning in the 1970s this consensus was challenged. These new policy makers and their political
allies like Reagan and Thatcher wanted to deregulate the market. They wanted to reduce the welfare state
and the role of government in the economy. State protection of industries linked to the military wasn’t
mentioned. Instead of welfare to the poor we had welfare to the rich.
This new neo liberal era was supposed to free the markets from the government. It was supposed to
allow individuals the freedom to set up businesses. It was supposed to increase freedom and the middle
class. The crash of international financial markets in 2008 put a question mark over neo liberalism.
Under our new economic era banks had a too dominant position in the economy. Speculation became
a more important economic activity than investing in business for the banks. The middle class got
smaller. Wealth moved up to a small and powerful elite. An increasing number of voters are angry
and they want change. Extremist politics has become attractive to an increasing number of voters. I
read somewhere that some former Obama supporters voted for Trump. They thought that nothing has
changed. They are looking for alternatives. Senator Sanders popularity is due to this desire for change.
President Trump gained votes because of this desire for change.
Will President Trump change the United States for the better or the worse? Will he break his promises
and do nothing in the White House? Only time will tell how this story will turn out. If the voters are
disappointed with Trump they will look elsewhere for a solution to their problems. It seems to me that
the mood music of the FDR era was hope but the mood music today is anger. Whatever your views of
this Presidential election it is important to look at the facts honestly if you want to find a solution to the
present situation.

8 CORK TOWNS AND VILLAGES BENEFIT
FROM TOWN AND VILLAGE RENEWAL SCHEME
BOHERBUE & FERMOY IN NORTH CORK
The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht
Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD recently announced that 172
towns and villages across the country are set to benefit from €10
million in funding under the 2016 Town and Village Renewal
Scheme.
€380,000 of this €10m was allocated to Cork County Council
from this scheme to cover 85% of the cost of the project. Cork
County Council is to fund the remainder 15%. One village/town was chosen from
each Municipal District in County Cork as part of this scheme. The towns and
villages in County Cork approved for funding under the 2016 Town & Village
Renewal Scheme are as follows:
Commenting on the announcement of funding, North Cork Independent
Councillor John Paul O’ Shea said “Our towns and villages are the heart of our
rural communities, but many of them are still recovering from the economic
downturn. The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is one way of helping to create
this recovery and to breath life back into our rural towns and villages. I know the
village of Boherbue will be extremely happy to find out that monies have been
allocated to put a footpath in place from the village to the graveyard in the village.
I sincerely hope the Government and Minister Humphreys will stick to their
commitment now and secure increased funding for the scheme for 2017 so other
villages and towns can benefit in future years”.
The funding allocated in 2016 is being used for a wide variety of projects,

identified by Local Authorities in conjunction with local community groups and
businesses, including improving playgrounds and footpaths, tourism amenities,
public art pieces and a wide range of works to improve the streetscape and public
realm of towns and villages nationwide, to help make them more attractive and
more sustainable places in which to live and work.

CORK COUNTY COUNCIL UNDERTAKES MAJOR
PUBLIC LIGHTING LED RETROFIT PROGRAMME
Over 700 public lights throughout Cork County are to be replaced with new energy efficient
LED lighting before year end.
The new programme is part of a drive from the local authority to improve the public lighting
in Cork’s Towns and Villages and to reduce its overall energy consumption. LED lighting
produces a whiter light which allows for better dissemination of colour making it easier to
identify pedestrians crossing the road etc.
Welcoming the investment in our Public Lighting Infrastructure, North Cork Independent
Cllr. John Paul O’ Shea said “LED technology has been changing and improving at a rapid
pace over the last few years but has recently stabilized to a quality efficient product, which can
produce an equivalent level of lighting at close to 50% less energy consumption than the older
lights. Cork County Council needs to be commended for this investment which will ultimately
lead to a significant improvement in public lighting for our citizens while also making Cork
County Council more energy efficient”.
Some of the locations identified within the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District in the 2016
LED
Retrofit Public Lighting Programme include:
N20 at Anabella & Beecher Street Roundabouts, Mallow - 47 lights
R619 Mallow Bridge to Quartertown - 50 lights
Churchtown village - 15 lights
Millstreet (Drishane View Housing Estate) - 7 lights
Ballyclough (Main St.) - 9 lights
Millstreet (Drishane Road) - 37 lights
Millstreet (Killarney Road) - 13 lights

Cork County Council recently led
successful pilot LED public lighting
retrofit programmes in Glounthane,
the West Cork Islands and other
smaller locations around the county.
Following this pilot project, the local
authority has decided to initiate this
rolling programme of LED retrofits
throughout the County which is
anticipated to continue annually up
to 2020 when it is envisaged all public
lighting will be LED. Cork County
Council has also recently been
selected to lead the Public Lighting
Unit within the Roads Management Office and that Unit will play a key role in the overall retrofit
programme nationally.
Meanwhile, five towns and villages within the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District is to benefit
from Cork County Council’s 2016 Public Lighting Capital Programme. A total of €400,000 of
funding has been set aside countywide for new public lighting with €52,400 being allocated to
the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District.
Cllr. O’ Shea said “This announcement is very welcomed news and will go some way in
addressing the gaps in our public lighting network we currently have in the District. Works will
include the installation of new lighting (also LED) which have been requested by communities
and public representatives. This funding continues a similar investment of €400k in 2015 which
I hope will continue in future years”.Locations where the new public lighting is to be installed
before the end of the year includes:
Liscarroll - 2 lights – Provide new lighting around the Old Walls junction
Boherbue: 2 lights – Extension of lighting on Knocknagree Road to Marian Shrine
Churchtown: 6 lights – Install new lighting outside GAA pitch and residential area in the
vicinity of Padre Pio Nursing Home
Millstreet: 2 lights – Eliminate Blackspot on entrance to Drishane View Estate
Newmarket: 5 lights – Extend lighting towards Collagh Bridge (Phase 1).
Cllr. O’ Shea added “These works will improve greatly the specific areas in our District. While
there is many more towns and villages that could benefit from funding for the replacement
of lights to LED and additional public lighting, this is a very good start and it is my view and
intention to seek more funding in 2017 to continue this vital work for the people living within
the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District. I also want to compliment the staff involved in the
Public Lighting Department for their efforts in preparing these programmes for 2016”.
There are currently 40,000 public lights throughout Cork County which represents 10% of the
entire public lighting stock in the country. The cost of public lighting in Cork County accounts
for over 52% of the overall energy bill of the authority.
