Editorial
Dear Readers,
Soul of Street is going ahead. We created this special issue a new format of
our Soul of Street Magazine and are very proud to present you this #Soulofbrussels
Issue. We are always looking for new paths we can go together
with the Streetphotopgrahy community. Our visions become more and
more concrete ideas with a tangible form, with results, we don’t want to
keep back any longer from you.
After we got to know about the Brussels Street Photography Festival (BSPF) in
September, we spontaneously decided to go to Brussels at the end of October. We
attended the opening ceremony in the gallery Ravenstein and the award ceremony
at the following evening.
In this issue, we would like to tell you what the 1st Brussels Street Photography
Festival was about and which artists took part. We summarized this for you and
will you show some accompanying pictures from both evenings of the event. At
this extraordinary event with a huge variety of photographers old and new friends
crossed our way and we are deeply thankful for all the conversations we had with
every single person. All of them had their individual point of view on this unique
kind of photography and thus let us take a glimpse of their world.
Reiner Girsch wrote down his impressions and experiences from Brussels in a
short report for you. You can literally feel from his words how the 40 hours in Belgium
have influenced him.
Furthermore, we are happy that Christof Timmermann could meet with the Belgian
photographer Kristof Vande Velde from the APF Magazine, for an Interview to
get to know more about his work as a photographer.
Marc Barkowski is giving with “Streets of Brussels” insights into his philosophical
views of the searching and finding of moments on the lively streets of Brussels.
Moreover, we would like to introduce you to Tom Lyon, with only 17 years the
photography student from Belgium was able to win the public prize competition in
the category single. Totally vintage, he is shooting film since he was a child and is
developing his pictures himself in a darkroom.
40 Hours of Brussels
At the Beginning of September Marc suddenly had the idea to go to the
Brussels Street Photography Festival (BSPF). We made a quick google
search and knew very fast that we would be going there. A few days later
we had booked our rooms in Hotel BLOOM, the same hotel the award ceremony
would take place. After booking our train tickets as well and taking
vacation days from work the trip to Brussels and my first photography festival
was set. The anticipation for the festival was growing each day and like everything
in life, time was flying.
Friday the 28th of October 2016 time had finally come. I was about 40 minutes
before departure to Brussels at the Cologne central station; Marc arrived shortly
after me, and you could literally see his joy of going to this event on his face. Bevor
getting on the train we had a little breakfast.
The Thalys was on time. We had barely started to discuss what we would expect at
the Brussels Street Photography Festival and what we would like to include in this
issue, if all goes well, as the train was already arriving in Brussels. Like I said, time
always flies.
Out of the train, into the taxi, and in less than 15 minutes we were standing at
the reception of the Hotel BLOOM. It seems to become a tradition that we can‘t
check into hotels without problems – I remember Stuttgart and similar problems
there – In the end, it took 45 minutes until we were able to get to our rooms. The
apprentice seemed to be a little overwhelmed. But eventually, he managed it with
the help of an experienced coworker. As we had enough time anyway, we were totally
relaxed. Die rooms were big and individual, as every room was designed by a
different designer – I liked that a lot.
After refreshing myself quickly, I went down to the lobby where Marc was waiting
for me. We wanted to use the time until the event and explore Brussels with our
Cameras. We roughly walked to the gallery and the way downtown.
At 7 pm time had finally come. Many photographers followed the invitation to the
gallery Ravenstein. The exhibition was extremely impressive; it was fascinating
and a great inspiration for my photography. Until then I was a huge friend of black
and white photography. But the colorful pictures of the exhibition impressed me so
much that I put my camera in color mode already the next day and tried to compose
my pictures in a different way.
But that wasn‘t all that impressed me this evening. The exhibition was getting more
and more crowded during the evening, and I started to see photographers I had
only known from Books or reportages so far- Matt Stuart for example. What stroke
my attention in a very positive way, was that he didn’t put on the airs of a star but
rather acted like a normal visitor with big eyes and huge talent.
With Fabian Schreyer, I was introduced to another famous German Street photographer.
The both got to know each other at a vernissage in Rome and met again
in Brussels after a long time.
What I liked, in particular, was that this event not just gave me the feeling of being
