Over <strong>the</strong> last couple of years,<br />

address <strong>the</strong> entire threat defense lifecycle.<br />
While th<strong>is</strong> makes perfect sense <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple,<br />
<strong>the</strong> reality <strong>is</strong> that few organizations, if any,<br />
have <strong>the</strong> resources and <strong>the</strong> technical knowhow<br />
<strong>to</strong> deploy and manage a robust security<br />
solution across <strong>the</strong> enterpr<strong>is</strong>e network. To<br />
address th<strong>is</strong> security gap, more and more<br />
organizations are turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Managed<br />
Security Service Providers (MSSPs). In fact,<br />
accord<strong>in</strong>g a 2015 Infonetics research report<br />
titled ‘Cloud and CPE Managed Security<br />
Services’, <strong>the</strong> demand for managed security<br />
services <strong>is</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g at double digit figures<br />
and <strong>is</strong> expected <strong>to</strong> reach close <strong>to</strong> $20 billion<br />
Over <strong>the</strong> last couple of years, between <strong>the</strong><br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st cyber threats <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> deploy cloud-first,<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrated security solutions that address <strong>the</strong><br />
entire threat defense lifecycle.<br />
globally by 2019. Global IT research firm<br />
Gartner, def<strong>in</strong>es managed security services<br />
as remote moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g or management of<br />
IT security functions delivered via shared<br />
services from remote security operations<br />
centers and not through personnel on-site.<br />
For <strong>in</strong>clusion with<strong>in</strong> Gartner’s MSSP criteria,<br />
players must be able <strong>to</strong> remotely moni<strong>to</strong>r<br />
and manage through shared service<br />
delivery, firewalls, <strong>in</strong>trusion detection<br />

and have security operations centres<br />

Service providers like telecommunication<br />

and <strong>in</strong>ternet service providers use such a<br />
broad-based portfolio approach and as<br />
such possess all <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>to</strong> deliver<br />
robust managed security services. So what<br />
are some of <strong>the</strong> key success fac<strong>to</strong>rs that<br />
service providers should consider when<br />
embark<strong>in</strong>g on th<strong>is</strong> MSSP journey?<br />
Bridg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Talent Gap<br />
Talent shortage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East and<br />
globally for that matter, particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
security space, <strong>is</strong> a <strong>to</strong>pic of much d<strong>is</strong>cussion.<br />
In fact, by 2017, reports suggest that <strong>the</strong>re<br />
will be a shortage of 2 million cybersecurity<br />
professionals skilled <strong>in</strong> analytics and<br />
forensics. The limited resource availability<br />
directly translates <strong>to</strong> weak security<br />
protection levels with<strong>in</strong> an organization<br />
and <strong>the</strong> net result <strong>is</strong> longer lead times<br />
for protection, detection and correction.<br />
While th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> drivers for<br />
organizations choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> partner with<br />
MSSPs, <strong>the</strong> onus now falls on <strong>the</strong> service<br />
provider <strong>to</strong> bridge th<strong>is</strong> talent gap.<br />
Talent shortage <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Middle East and<br />
globally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> security<br />
space, <strong>is</strong> a <strong>to</strong>pic of<br />
much d<strong>is</strong>cussion. In<br />
fact, by 2017, reports<br />
suggest that <strong>the</strong>re<br />
will be a shortage of 2<br />
million cybersecurity<br />
professionals skilled <strong>in</strong><br />
analytics and forensics.<br />
Compet<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st security vendors for<br />
talent could be an effort <strong>in</strong> futility so service<br />
providers that are serious about build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
an MSSP practice should have a clear<br />
strategy for hir<strong>in</strong>g, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
security personnel with a focus on nurtur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>-house talent. Not only should personnel<br />
be technically savvy and have a thorough of<br />
<strong>the</strong> various security products and solutions,<br />
but as importantly, <strong>the</strong>y need <strong>to</strong> have a<br />
deep understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> threat landscape<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region and possible attack vec<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong><br />
allow <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> spot potential threats <strong>to</strong> an<br />
organization.<br />
Partner with Best-<strong>in</strong>-Class<br />
Over <strong>the</strong> last couple of years, we have seen<br />
<strong>the</strong> emergence of a stagger<strong>in</strong>g number of<br />
security vendors on <strong>the</strong> market, almost<br />
all claim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be ‘best-<strong>in</strong>-class’! The good<br />
news for MSSPs <strong>is</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y are spoiled<br />
for choice but <strong>the</strong> bad news <strong>is</strong> that many<br />
of <strong>the</strong>se solutions overlap and providers<br />
often trade off product features for ease of<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegration and collaboration between <strong>the</strong><br />
various products and solutions.<br />
Ra<strong>the</strong>r than opt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrate d<strong>is</strong>parate<br />
po<strong>in</strong>t solutions, service providers look<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>to</strong> build an MSSP practice would be well<br />
served <strong>to</strong> partner with a couple of key<br />
security vendors from <strong>the</strong> outset <strong>to</strong> develop<br />
a security service platform from <strong>the</strong> ground<br />
up that address <strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong> market and<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mers <strong>the</strong>y are look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> serve.<br />
Address <strong>the</strong> Hybrid Cloud<br />
At present security service providers and<br />
end cus<strong>to</strong>mers take jo<strong>in</strong>t responsibility<br />
of <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess security <strong>in</strong>tegrity. Due <strong>to</strong><br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g complexity of security solutions<br />
and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g need <strong>to</strong> focus on core<br />
<strong>compete</strong>nce, managed security service<br />
providers are under pressure <strong>to</strong> take full<br />
management control of <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
security environment. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> compounded<br />
with <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g adoption of cloud <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
region.<br />
With <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g adoption of hybrid<br />
cloud <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East (primarily<br />
because of security and privacy concerns)<br />
and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g spend<strong>in</strong>g on public cloud<br />
solutions, MSSPs will soon need <strong>to</strong> take<br />
charge of moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g end user cloud<br />
application activity along with hybrid<br />
solutions and <strong>to</strong> that end, should <strong>in</strong>tegrate<br />
security <strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir applications and<br />
product offer<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Become a Trusted Adv<strong>is</strong>or<br />
Too often, vendors and partners alike,<br />
use <strong>the</strong> term ‘trusted adv<strong>is</strong>or’ when<br />
characteriz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir partnership with endcus<strong>to</strong>mers.<br />
But what does be<strong>in</strong>g a trusted<br />
adv<strong>is</strong>or really mean? It means, build<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
level of accountability and transparency<br />
with <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer that goes far beyond just<br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g tactical security services. MSSPs<br />
should be <strong>in</strong> constant communication with<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir cus<strong>to</strong>mers, regularly shar<strong>in</strong>g analytics,<br />
threat <strong>in</strong>telligence and <strong>in</strong>cidence reports.<br />
By educat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer on <strong>the</strong>ir security<br />
posture, MSSPs allow <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer <strong>to</strong> take<br />
more <strong>in</strong>formed, ‘evidence-based’ dec<strong>is</strong>ions<br />
and <strong>in</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g so, ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer’s trust.<br />
Across <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eties, <strong>the</strong> early generation of<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternet service providers would bundle a<br />
firewall at <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer site with a public<br />
network connection and would manage it<br />
<strong>is</strong> as well. Th<strong>is</strong> was <strong>the</strong> start of managed<br />
security services from service providers,<br />
almost ten years ago. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />
challenges of manag<strong>in</strong>g IT security for<br />
both service providers and bus<strong>in</strong>esses have<br />
transformed and scaled tremendously.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> has created <strong>the</strong> opportunity for<br />
service providers <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly manage<br />
<strong>the</strong> rout<strong>in</strong>e IT security operations for<br />
end users. And for end users, <strong>the</strong> core<br />
<strong>compete</strong>ncy and scale of <strong>the</strong> technology<br />
platforms managed by service providers,<br />
has given <strong>the</strong>m confidence <strong>to</strong> contract<br />
out <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>tration of <strong>the</strong>ir IT security<br />
operations, a w<strong>in</strong>-w<strong>in</strong> for all!<br />

From Technology <strong>to</strong> Services and <strong>the</strong> Internet of Everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Mart<strong>in</strong>g Born, Ansgar, Schlautmann<br />
Arthur D. Little hosted its annual executive<br />
conference <strong>in</strong> Munich and welcomed more<br />
than 50 senior executives from different<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>in</strong> Europe, <strong>the</strong> Middle East,<br />
Asia Pacific, and <strong>the</strong> US. Th<strong>is</strong> year’s major<br />
<strong>the</strong>me was “Beyond <strong>the</strong> Internet of Th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
– from Technology <strong>to</strong> Services.” Insightful<br />
presentations and lively d<strong>is</strong>cussions allowed<br />
all participants <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>in</strong> valuable perspectives<br />
on and ideas about how <strong>the</strong> IoT and<br />
digitalization are impact<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess models<br />
and operations of different <strong>in</strong>dustries,<br />
and how successful players master <strong>the</strong>se<br />
challenges. The event concluded at <strong>the</strong><br />
Munich Ok<strong>to</strong>berfest, where many guests<br />
networked <strong>in</strong> a relax<strong>in</strong>g atmosphere.<br />
Beyond <strong>the</strong> Internet of Th<strong>in</strong>gs – from<br />
technology <strong>to</strong> services<br />
The <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g digitalization challenges<br />
players across <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>to</strong> transform<br />
and embrace <strong>the</strong> emerg<strong>in</strong>g opportunities.<br />
Until <strong>to</strong>day companies have often seen<br />
digitalization and <strong>the</strong> Internet of Th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
(IoT) ma<strong>in</strong>ly from a technology perspective.<br />
Digitalization, however, has a broader<br />
scope than devices becom<strong>in</strong>g IT or <strong>in</strong>ternet<br />
enabled and “smart”. Therefore, companies<br />
need <strong>to</strong> abandon <strong>the</strong> narrow view and<br />
understand that digitalization drives<br />
not only technological change, but also<br />
<strong>the</strong> transition of offer<strong>in</strong>gs from physical<br />
products <strong>to</strong> services, and even d<strong>is</strong>rupts<br />
entire bus<strong>in</strong>ess models. The Internet of<br />
Th<strong>in</strong>gs will even develop fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> an<br />
Internet of Everyth<strong>in</strong>g, compr<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g also <strong>the</strong><br />
digital tw<strong>in</strong>s of services and human be<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
These changes urge companies <strong>to</strong> develop<br />
new capabilities and understand and<br />
adjust <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> different character<strong>is</strong>tics<br />
of new service offer<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong><br />
effectively provide <strong>in</strong>tegrated value<br />
propositions <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir cus<strong>to</strong>mers. Most<br />
importantly, <strong>the</strong> digital opportunity needs<br />
<strong>to</strong> be viewed hol<strong>is</strong>tically, <strong>in</strong> contextual<br />
environments, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> new solutions<br />
will be <strong>in</strong>troduced.<br />
However, th<strong>is</strong> massive change, <strong>in</strong> most<br />
cases, cannot be handled by one <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
alone. Hence, <strong>the</strong> IoT can only be mastered<br />
jo<strong>in</strong>tly and not by competition across <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>dustries. Partner<strong>in</strong>g will <strong>the</strong>refore ga<strong>in</strong><br />
importance <strong>in</strong> every <strong>in</strong>dustry and market.<br />
In summary, <strong>the</strong> IoT <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> core driver of<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess model change and efficiency<br />
improvements. However, no <strong>in</strong>dustry or<br />
player has a dom<strong>in</strong>ant position <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> space<br />
yet and mass market application of <strong>the</strong> IoT<br />
can only be mastered effectively through<br />
partnerships. Th<strong>is</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g was<br />
shared across <strong>the</strong> presentations of André<br />
Stark (BMW), Sven He<strong>is</strong>termann (Google)<br />
and Yüksel Sirmasac (RocketHome).<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r important aspect d<strong>is</strong>cussed by<br />
<strong>the</strong> participants was mach<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g, i.e.<br />
<strong>the</strong> ability of mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>to</strong> learn constantly<br />
by connect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> outside ecosystem <strong>in</strong><br />
order <strong>to</strong> improve services and create value<br />
for <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer. “You have <strong>to</strong> put <strong>the</strong><br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mer <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> center of your activities”,<br />
Sven He<strong>is</strong>termann said. Henriette<br />
Wendt of Telia Company agreed: “We are<br />
reach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of mach<strong>in</strong>es hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>telligence of human be<strong>in</strong>gs.” And “We are<br />
now at <strong>the</strong> tipp<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t of IoT becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
real <strong>in</strong> people’s and organizations’ lives”,<br />
Wendt stated. In <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cussions dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
event, it also became apparent that data<br />
security, privacy and ownership of data are<br />
critical and important aspects of successful<br />
IoT deployments. Despite th<strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong>pic be<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
highest importance <strong>to</strong> participants, it also<br />
became clear that no permanent solution<br />
<strong>to</strong> th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong>sue has been found. Hence, th<strong>is</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong>pic still imposes huge <strong>in</strong>security <strong>to</strong> most<br />
players.<br />

AN EVENT OF<br />
Mobile has become fundamental <strong>to</strong> our everyday lives.<br />
It has <strong>in</strong>extricably changed how we communicate,<br />
<strong>in</strong>teract, work and play as <strong>in</strong>dividuals. It <strong>is</strong><br />
transform<strong>in</strong>g entire <strong>in</strong>dustries, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g new levels<br />
of productivity and efficiency <strong>to</strong> enterpr<strong>is</strong>es.<br />
Over three decades, mobile has evolved from an<br />
emerg<strong>in</strong>g communications technology <strong>to</strong> a<br />
phenomenon that <strong>is</strong> now at <strong>the</strong> foundation of<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g we do. How can we describe <strong>the</strong> role<br />
of mobile <strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong>day’s world?<br />
Elemental.<br />
Mobile <strong>is</strong> revolutionary, dynamic, ever adapt<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
It’s <strong>the</strong> force beh<strong>in</strong>d every emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novation, every<br />
forward-th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g enterpr<strong>is</strong>e. Jo<strong>in</strong> us <strong>in</strong> Barcelona for<br />

digitalization also as an enabler <strong>to</strong><br />
transform <strong>the</strong>ir core bus<strong>in</strong>esses. “In<br />
<strong>the</strong> future, <strong>the</strong> mobility experience <strong>in</strong><br />
vehicles will be <strong>to</strong>tally different <strong>to</strong> what<br />
we experience <strong>to</strong>day,” stated André Stark,<br />
Head of Digital Services at BMW. Due <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g trend <strong>to</strong>wards au<strong>to</strong>nomous<br />
driv<strong>in</strong>g, vehicles will become more like liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
rooms, and hence need <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> offer<br />
similar experiences <strong>to</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mers. Engag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> service dialogue with <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer,<br />
however, <strong>is</strong> a new dimension for OEMs.<br />
Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>to</strong> provide <strong>the</strong>se advanced<br />
services, vehicles require secure back-end<br />
systems as well as broadly available and<br />
effectively stable connectivity. Chr<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>f<br />
Hellm<strong>is</strong>, VP Strategic Programs at <strong>the</strong><br />
digital-map service provider Here, picked up<br />
and confirmed th<strong>is</strong> aspect.<br />
Yüksel Sirmasac, CEO of RocketHome,<br />
believes truly smart solutions need <strong>to</strong><br />
connect <strong>the</strong> whole ecosystem that <strong>is</strong><br />
emerg<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> smart home market.<br />
He highlighted <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> audience that <strong>to</strong>day’s<br />
digital solutions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> smart home space<br />
are ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>dependent and <strong>is</strong>olated –<br />
hence, <strong>the</strong>y are less accepted by cus<strong>to</strong>mers<br />
due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> low additional value add. By<br />
offer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tegrated portfolios, smart home<br />
providers such as telecoms and utilities<br />
could transform <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>esses, b<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mers more effectively and reduce<br />
churn significantly.<br />
IoT as an enabler of smart manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Alastair Orchard, VP Digital Enterpr<strong>is</strong>e<br />
Project at Siemens, outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> importance<br />
of grasp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> digital opportunity for <strong>the</strong><br />
product development process. “The digital<br />
revolution enables companies <strong>to</strong> transform<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal value cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a competitive<br />
advantage”, Orchard believes. Siemens<br />
<strong>is</strong> already <strong>to</strong>day runn<strong>in</strong>g its product<br />
development and manufactur<strong>in</strong>g processes<br />
as a “virtual copy” of manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sites<br />
compr<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g production facilities, people and<br />
products. Th<strong>is</strong> advanced technology enables<br />
Siemens <strong>to</strong> produce highly cus<strong>to</strong>mized<br />
products for its clients – right <strong>the</strong> first time.<br />
The example of Siemens demonstrated <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> participants, how far digitalization has<br />
driven <strong>the</strong> developments <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Even if, as Alastair Orchard po<strong>in</strong>ted out, not<br />
all of Siemens’ facilities are yet work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
<strong>the</strong>se highly soph<strong>is</strong>ticated technologies<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are mak<strong>in</strong>g pace on th<strong>is</strong> path.<br />
Partner<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g a key<br />
differentia<strong>to</strong>r<br />
Panel<strong>is</strong>ts from Vodafone, BMW, <strong>in</strong>surance<br />
service provider Audatex, and Google<br />
reiterated that <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>the</strong> need for<br />
partner<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> and across ecosystems<br />
will be required for succeed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
digital age. “Every company has <strong>to</strong> focus<br />
on its key capabilities – if we comb<strong>in</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong>se capabilities, we will be able <strong>to</strong> build<br />
differentiat<strong>in</strong>g solutions,” said Erik Brenne<strong>is</strong><br />
from Vodafone. Hubertus von Roenne of<br />
BT agreed: “Players will be strongest when<br />
<strong>the</strong>y identify <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual strengths<br />
and focus on those, while partner<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> acquire <strong>the</strong> capabilities <strong>the</strong> player<br />
does not have itself.” However, <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />
organizational structures often do not<br />
match <strong>in</strong>novative ecosystems.<br />
Beyond <strong>the</strong> Internet of Th<strong>in</strong>gs – driv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> future of operations<br />
As “Industry 4.0” shapes <strong>the</strong> future of<br />
operations, Bernd Schreiber of Arthur D.<br />
Little highlighted that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration of<br />
<strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>is</strong> key <strong>to</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g radical<br />
performance improvements <strong>in</strong> enterpr<strong>is</strong>es.<br />
In order for companies <strong>to</strong> effectively<br />
leverage digitalization for <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>esses,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y need <strong>to</strong> understand <strong>the</strong> available and<br />
emerg<strong>in</strong>g technologies, develop target<br />
pictures, and improve transparency on cost<br />
structures, which <strong>is</strong> essential for sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
right priorities.<br />
LPWAN for new IoT solutions: enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
low-cost use cases<br />
Emerg<strong>in</strong>g technologies such as “lowpower<br />
wide area wireless access” (LPWA)<br />
represent new and efficient <strong>way</strong>s <strong>to</strong> realize<br />
small band and very remote use cases.<br />
“Solutions can go as low as five Euro <strong>to</strong>tal<br />
cost of ownership,” said Pierrick Hamon<br />
from Qow<strong>is</strong>io. By <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g such types of<br />
low cost solutions, <strong>the</strong> market could move<br />
<strong>to</strong> “d<strong>is</strong>posable” IoT solutions (“Long-range<br />
RFID”), enabl<strong>in</strong>g use cases such as palette<br />
track<strong>in</strong>g and trac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> log<strong>is</strong>tics <strong>in</strong>dustry,<br />
sensor networks <strong>in</strong> remote locations, and<br />
smart city networks and numerous o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> utilities and telecoms <strong>in</strong>dustries.<br />
Big data as a value driver<br />
Many IoT applications will depend on large<br />
amounts of data and analytical <strong>in</strong>put from<br />
numerous sources (e.g. wea<strong>the</strong>r, em<strong>is</strong>sions,<br />
traffic-light data) with <strong>the</strong> aim of provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> most prec<strong>is</strong>e <strong>in</strong>formation at any<br />
location – e.g. deliver<strong>in</strong>g accuracy of less<br />
than one centimeter for mobility services.<br />
“The real value adds, however, <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> ability<br />
<strong>to</strong> “make sense” out of big data and put it<br />
<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a mean<strong>in</strong>gful form and result – from<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess of data <strong>to</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess of knowledge,”<br />
Chr<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>f Hellm<strong>is</strong> from Here claimed. Claudiu<br />
Pasa from Amazon as well as Tariq Hussa<strong>in</strong><br />
from Zum<strong>to</strong>bel Group expla<strong>in</strong>ed that IoT<br />
use cases can however become difficult <strong>to</strong><br />
implement due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> “massive scale” of<br />
solutions, physical constra<strong>in</strong>ts of devices<br />
and <strong>the</strong> need for devices <strong>to</strong> work seamlessly<br />
on a global scale. Henriette Wendt from<br />
Telia Company added that opera<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
will have <strong>to</strong> work on global connectivity<br />
solutions aim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> make it easier for<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>to</strong> offer <strong>the</strong>ir services worldwide.<br />
Ok<strong>to</strong>berfest<br />
Traditionally and also th<strong>is</strong> year, <strong>the</strong> event<br />
was closed by a v<strong>is</strong>it of <strong>the</strong> Bavarian<br />

Gegenheimer concluded, “We operate<br />
<strong>in</strong> a highly competitive <strong>in</strong>dustry, where <strong>the</strong><br />
marg<strong>in</strong> between success and failure <strong>is</strong> very<br />

Gulfsat<br />
and Palsat renew<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir TV broadcast<br />
cooperation agreement<br />
Gulfsat has announced <strong>the</strong><br />
renewal of <strong>the</strong> cooperation<br />
agreement for a twoyear<br />
term with Palsat, a<br />
subsidiary of <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian<br />
TV & Radio Broadcast<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Corporation <strong>in</strong> charge of <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian TV<br />
cable channels.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> step comes with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework of<br />
renew<strong>in</strong>g trust and partnership between<br />
<strong>the</strong> two sides, which began two years ago.<br />
Its also reaffirms <strong>the</strong> essential role played<br />
by Gulfsat as <strong>the</strong> third-largest satellite<br />
opera<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g specialized<br />
provider of broadcast<strong>in</strong>g and rebroadcast<strong>in</strong>g<br />
services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region.<br />
The agreement was signed by Public<br />
Authority for Radio and Telev<strong>is</strong>ion General<br />
Superv<strong>is</strong>or and Palsat’s Act<strong>in</strong>g Board<br />
Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Assaf, and Gulfsat<br />

Mohammed Al-Haj. The ceremony was<br />

After sign<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> agreement, Mr. Ahmed<br />
Assaf said: “We are delighted <strong>to</strong> announce<br />
th<strong>is</strong> renewed cooperation, which began<br />
two years ago Palsat, owned by <strong>the</strong> General<br />
Authority for Radio & TV, and Gulfsat.”<br />
Assaf po<strong>in</strong>ted out that <strong>the</strong> agreement and<br />
cooperation renewal between <strong>the</strong> two sides<br />
serves as a confirmation of <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian<br />
National Authority <strong>in</strong>stitutions’ confidence<br />
<strong>in</strong> Gulfsat and <strong>the</strong> quality of its services.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> has enabled Palsat <strong>to</strong> annex most of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian satellite channels, provide<br />
TV cable services <strong>to</strong> 11 Palest<strong>in</strong>ian channels,<br />
<strong>in</strong> addition <strong>to</strong> a group of radio stations via<br />
a uniform frequency for <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian<br />
bouquet (Palsat).<br />
Mr. Assaf added that <strong>the</strong> renewed<br />
agreement, designed <strong>to</strong> enhance<br />
cooperation, represents a future outlook<br />
and convenient opportunity <strong>to</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong> latest services offered by Gulfsat. Th<strong>is</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> secured communications<br />
services that featured an unprecedented<br />

prospects of cooperation between <strong>the</strong> two<br />
sides <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.<br />
On h<strong>is</strong> part, Gulfsat Chairman and<br />
CEO, Mr. Mohammed Al-Haj said: “The<br />
agreement referred <strong>to</strong>, which came <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />
effect two years ago <strong>in</strong> favor of Palsat,<br />
aimed <strong>to</strong> provide a specialized bouquet<br />
22 December 2016
<strong>in</strong> all Palest<strong>in</strong>ian TV channels, both of <strong>the</strong><br />
government and <strong>the</strong> private sec<strong>to</strong>rs.”<br />
Mr. Al-Haj outl<strong>in</strong>ed some technical<br />
and functional advantages related<br />
<strong>to</strong> th<strong>is</strong> package provided by Gulfsat,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g free jamm<strong>in</strong>g, as well as media<br />

Mr. Al-Haj added that <strong>the</strong> agreement<br />
renewal <strong>is</strong> of great importance, reaffirm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> strategic partnership that l<strong>in</strong>ks Gulfsat<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian National Authority and its<br />
affiliates <strong>in</strong> both public and private sec<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />
It opens a wider range of possibilities <strong>in</strong><br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r parallel services added <strong>to</strong><br />

support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> company’s operational<br />
activities and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g future revenues at<br />
<strong>the</strong> same time.<br />
The sign<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> agreement represented<br />
an opportunity for Gulfsat <strong>to</strong> shed light on<br />

Mr. Al-Haj added that <strong>the</strong> company <strong>is</strong><br />

INTERVIEW<br />
Content <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>way</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>compete</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong>day’s market<br />
Ali Ahmed Al Kuwari, President & CEO - Es’hailSat<br />
Speaks <strong>to</strong> Teletimes International <strong>in</strong> an exclusive<br />
<strong>in</strong>terview on Es’hailSat’s corporate strategy and<br />
market dynamics <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East.<br />
Khalid Athar<br />
Khalid Athar: Please give us a little<br />
background of Es’hailSat and your v<strong>is</strong>ion<br />
for <strong>the</strong> company mov<strong>in</strong>g forward.<br />
Ali Al Kuwari: Es’hailSat was establ<strong>is</strong>hed<br />
with <strong>the</strong> objective of provid<strong>in</strong>g satellite<br />
services <strong>to</strong> strategic stakeholders and<br />
commercial cus<strong>to</strong>mers. At that time when<br />
<strong>the</strong> Qatar government decided <strong>to</strong> enter <strong>the</strong><br />
space sec<strong>to</strong>r, we partnered with Eutelsat<br />
<strong>in</strong> late 2009 <strong>to</strong> build <strong>the</strong> satellite and <strong>the</strong><br />
company was <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> 2010.<br />
We launched our first satellite <strong>in</strong> 2013 <strong>in</strong><br />
August and we hope <strong>to</strong> launch our next<br />
satellite <strong>in</strong> 2017. It <strong>is</strong> difficult <strong>to</strong> talk about<br />
<strong>the</strong> exact time of <strong>the</strong> launch right now – we<br />
are plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> use Falcon 9 and <strong>the</strong> launch<br />
still has some f<strong>in</strong>al plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be done.<br />
As <strong>the</strong> CEO of th<strong>is</strong> company, my aim <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
improve its f<strong>in</strong>ancial stability and make it<br />
a global player as compared <strong>to</strong> its previous<br />
MENA position<strong>in</strong>g. In that direction, we<br />
have already had some positive d<strong>is</strong>cussions<br />
with potential partners and cus<strong>to</strong>mers <strong>in</strong><br />
East Asia and Africa <strong>to</strong> extend our global<br />
growth.<br />
As I said, I would like <strong>to</strong> see Es’hailSat as a<br />
global player. I would like <strong>to</strong> see Es’hailSat<br />
<strong>in</strong> a healthy f<strong>in</strong>ancial situation <strong>in</strong> terms of<br />
EBITDA. Today, we are f<strong>in</strong>ancially stable and<br />
healthy but I want <strong>to</strong> improve th<strong>is</strong> situation<br />
and take us <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> best of <strong>in</strong>dustry averages.<br />
KA: What are <strong>the</strong> latest broadcast<strong>in</strong>g<br />
trends you are see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>day?<br />
AA: Most of <strong>the</strong> broadcasters <strong>to</strong>day<br />
are try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> move <strong>to</strong>wards HD and 4K<br />
and <strong>the</strong>se two rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p trend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
technologies for <strong>the</strong> broadcast <strong>in</strong>dustry. As<br />
a satellite capacity and solutions provider,<br />
our role <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> allocate <strong>the</strong> required capacity<br />
<strong>to</strong> our cus<strong>to</strong>mers, and as <strong>the</strong>y make th<strong>is</strong><br />
transition <strong>to</strong>wards HD and 4K, <strong>the</strong> amount<br />
and quality of satellite service required<br />
<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g. In respect of <strong>the</strong>se trends,<br />
we are much focused <strong>to</strong> ensure that our<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mers’ transition from standard<br />
def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>to</strong>wards HD or 4K <strong>is</strong> seamless and<br />
well supported at <strong>the</strong> back-end.<br />
KA: Which areas will provide <strong>the</strong> highest<br />
growth for <strong>the</strong> broadcast market <strong>in</strong> your<br />
op<strong>in</strong>ion?<br />
AA: When we look at th<strong>in</strong>gs from<br />
Es’hailSat’s perspective, about 80% <strong>to</strong> 85%<br />
of <strong>the</strong> 2000+ channels <strong>in</strong> MENA are actually<br />
SD (Standard Def<strong>in</strong>ition) and <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> a high<br />
probability that <strong>the</strong>se channels will move <strong>to</strong><br />
HD as per <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry trend. Th<strong>is</strong> will drive<br />
consumption and growth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> market.<br />
We are also see<strong>in</strong>g some growth <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
verticals such as Aviation. The quality of<br />
service really matters for th<strong>is</strong> vertical,<br />
and talk<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> MENA region,<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g airl<strong>in</strong>es like Qatar Air<strong>way</strong>s, Etihad<br />
are compet<strong>in</strong>g with each o<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong><br />
26 December 2016
The dynamics of<br />
competition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Middle East are<br />
complicated and <strong>in</strong><br />
some situations, we<br />
are not compet<strong>in</strong>g”<br />
“I believe that it<br />
<strong>is</strong> not <strong>the</strong> satellite<br />
opera<strong>to</strong>r who decides<br />
competition but <strong>the</strong><br />
content itself which<br />
drives th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
– we plan <strong>to</strong> follow<br />
<strong>the</strong> good content and<br />
content trends as our<br />
<strong>way</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>compete</strong>”<br />
best services <strong>in</strong>-flight which <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
mobility and connectivity – hence, we<br />
are also expect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> see growth <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong><br />
vertical.<br />
KA: Would you like <strong>to</strong> comment on <strong>the</strong><br />
current situation of <strong>the</strong> Pay TV market?<br />
AA: I believe that MENA <strong>is</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g quite<br />
saturated as a broadcast market, however I<br />
see room for growth <strong>in</strong> Pay TV. Then aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />
MENA <strong>is</strong> still not mature enough <strong>in</strong> terms<br />
of Pay TV services. The channels on Pay TV<br />
have doubled over <strong>the</strong> last year and <strong>the</strong>re<br />
<strong>is</strong> still some more opportunity. Channel<br />
conversions <strong>to</strong> Pay TV platforms will<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> MENA which will<br />
have its effect on capacity consumption and<br />
we are already tak<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> account for<br />
our own forecast<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
KA: Many of our readers would like some<br />
<strong>in</strong>sights by an <strong>in</strong>dustry leader like yourself<br />
on <strong>the</strong> competition between satellite<br />
opera<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East.<br />
AA: The Middle East now has 4 major<br />
players. There <strong>is</strong> Nilesat, Arabsat, Es’hailSat<br />
and Yahsat. However, <strong>the</strong> dynamics<br />
of competition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East are<br />
complicated and <strong>in</strong> some situations, we<br />
are not compet<strong>in</strong>g. For example, we are<br />
shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 25.5° / 26° E Orbital slot with<br />
Arabsat – we are not compet<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>in</strong> fact<br />
complement<strong>in</strong>g each o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
There <strong>is</strong> competition from o<strong>the</strong>r orbital<br />
slots like 7° West where Nilesat and Eutelsat<br />
ex<strong>is</strong>t, but <strong>the</strong>n aga<strong>in</strong> I believe that it <strong>is</strong><br />
not <strong>the</strong> satellite opera<strong>to</strong>r who decides<br />
competition but <strong>the</strong> content itself which<br />
drives th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry – we plan <strong>to</strong> follow <strong>the</strong><br />
good content and content trends as our <strong>way</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>compete</strong>. We are try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g premium<br />
content <strong>to</strong> our orbital slot because th<strong>is</strong><br />
premium content will push viewers <strong>to</strong> shift<br />
<strong>to</strong> 25.5° / 26° E – so <strong>the</strong> competition <strong>is</strong><br />
really tak<strong>in</strong>g place between <strong>the</strong> orbital<br />
slots and not between <strong>the</strong> opera<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />
Our <strong>way</strong> <strong>to</strong> go <strong>is</strong> not <strong>to</strong> <strong>compete</strong> with any<br />
specific opera<strong>to</strong>r but <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong> most traffic<br />
<strong>to</strong>wards our orbital slots – and any opera<strong>to</strong>r<br />
who shares that attracts traffic as well, so<br />
it’s more like complement<strong>in</strong>g ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />
compet<strong>in</strong>g with anybody who <strong>is</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
slot.<br />

Huawei showcased its telecom<br />
energy solutions at AfricaCom 2016<br />
The annual Africa’s biggest and most<br />
<strong>in</strong>fluential telecom expo, AfricaCom 2016,<br />
has concluded on November 17 Cape <strong>to</strong>wn.<br />
Through a series of booth demonstration<br />
and <strong>in</strong>teractive experience, Huawei<br />
showcased its telecom energy solutions<br />
which are designated <strong>to</strong> help carriers <strong>to</strong><br />
reduce cost and improve efficiency. These<br />
solutions attracted lots of African countries’<br />
carriers, <strong>in</strong>dustry experts and analysts <strong>to</strong><br />
d<strong>is</strong>cuss about <strong>the</strong> future development of<br />
network energy for a “Fully Connected<br />
Green Africa”.<br />
A fully connected era <strong>is</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
telecom energy <strong>is</strong> fac<strong>in</strong>g new challenges.<br />
With <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>centives of <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternet<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess and progress<strong>in</strong>g telecom<br />
technology, <strong>the</strong> network structure and<br />
site forms keep chang<strong>in</strong>g along with <strong>the</strong><br />
evolution of ICT <strong>in</strong>tegration. The future<br />
energy supply <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fully connected era<br />
will face three major challenges:<br />
“0 Interruption” and “0 Cost” of power<br />
supply when connection <strong>is</strong> needed, and “0<br />
Energy Consumption” when connection <strong>is</strong><br />
not needed.<br />
Huawei was <strong>the</strong> first <strong>to</strong> apply <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />
controll<strong>in</strong>g management technology <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> telecom energy field, launch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
Migrate Towards Simplicity (MTS) smart site<br />
solutions which improves <strong>the</strong> site energy<br />
efficiency. Through <strong>the</strong> application of high<br />
efficient components, reasonable design<br />
of air passage, system controll<strong>in</strong>g logic,<br />
moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> performances of all <strong>the</strong><br />
sites, MTS cont<strong>in</strong>uously provides energy<br />
efficiency improvement suggestions <strong>to</strong><br />
optimize <strong>the</strong> network energy efficiency.<br />
The purpose of MTS <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> realize sites fast<br />
deployment, easy Operat<strong>in</strong>g & Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
(O&M), smooth upgrade, energy-sav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and em<strong>is</strong>sion-reduction, which will help<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mers <strong>to</strong> save OPEX and ensure <strong>the</strong><br />
reliable operation of sites.<br />
Hybrid power supply solution <strong>is</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
green energy solution presented at<br />
AfricaCom. Huawei hybrid power supply<br />
solution comb<strong>in</strong>es different method of<br />
power generation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g diesel and<br />
solar. In most African regions with unstable<br />
grid power supply, compared <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
traditional D.G. sites, Huawei solutions<br />
can not only help African <strong>to</strong>wer companies<br />
<strong>to</strong> develop flexible bus<strong>in</strong>ess modes, but<br />
also can lower site OPEX and lower carbon<br />
em<strong>is</strong>sion, which helps <strong>to</strong> realize <strong>the</strong><br />
maximization of energy efficiency and <strong>the</strong><br />
optimization of cost effectiveness.<br />
Management system <strong>is</strong> an important<br />
element <strong>in</strong> Huawei’s energy solutions. The<br />
Huawei smart site management system<br />
of <strong>the</strong> new generation <strong>is</strong> an end-<strong>to</strong>-end<br />
energy management platform which <strong>is</strong> able<br />
<strong>to</strong> provide simple, efficient and reliable<br />
management for <strong>the</strong> sites O&M <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
power, fuel, energy consumption, energy<br />
efficiency, assets & <strong>in</strong>ven<strong>to</strong>ry and daily<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>tenance. Due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of<br />
harsh natural environment and backward<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure, African <strong>to</strong>wer companies<br />
and telecom carriers al<strong>way</strong>s <strong>in</strong>vest huge <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> aspects of energy acqu<strong>is</strong>ition and O&M.<br />
Compar<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> traditional labor-based<br />
O&M, <strong>the</strong> smart site management system<br />
can help <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g OPEX with<br />
prec<strong>is</strong>e O&M, proactive management and<br />
energy-sav<strong>in</strong>g operation, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g more and<br />
more benefits <strong>to</strong> African <strong>to</strong>wer companies<br />
and telecom carriers.<br />
Mr. He Xiaom<strong>in</strong>, Vice President <strong>in</strong> Huawei<br />
Network Energy Product L<strong>in</strong>e, said dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
AfricaCom:” An <strong>in</strong>telligent society <strong>is</strong><br />
com<strong>in</strong>g. Based on <strong>the</strong> deep understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of telecom network, Huawei <strong>in</strong>novatively<br />
comb<strong>in</strong>e ICT technology with energy<br />
technology <strong>to</strong> create high efficient energy<br />
management solutions. The future site<br />
power <strong>is</strong> no longer an <strong>is</strong>olated dump device.<br />
Instead, it will become a smart node <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligent energy network. Mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>to</strong>wards digitization, <strong>in</strong>terconnection and<br />
<strong>in</strong>tellectualization, with network energy<br />
efficiency maximization <strong>the</strong>ory, network<br />
energy will become an energy network that<br />

Huawei Rotat<strong>in</strong>g CEO Ken Hu announces<br />
X Labs for mobile broadband research<br />
More than 1,500 telecom and vertical<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Makuhari Messe convention center <strong>in</strong><br />
Tokyo, Japan for <strong>the</strong> seventh annual Mobile<br />
Broadband Forum (MBBF), jo<strong>in</strong>tly hosted by<br />
Huawei, GSMA, and GTI. Dur<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> keynote<br />
on three unprecedented development<br />
opportunities that await telecom opera<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
<strong>in</strong> video, household, and vertical markets,<br />
Ken Hu, Deputy Chairman and Rotat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
CEO of Huawei, called upon opera<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong><br />
build application-centric networks and help<br />
establ<strong>is</strong>h an open ecosystem. In support of<br />
<strong>the</strong>se efforts, he announced X Labs, a new<br />
research platform that will br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
opera<strong>to</strong>rs, technology providers, and<br />
vertical <strong>in</strong>dustry partners <strong>to</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>tly explore<br />
future use cases for mobile applications,<br />
drive <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess and technology,<br />
and promote an open <strong>in</strong>dustry ecosystem.<br />
Hu went on <strong>to</strong> describe “a wild world of<br />
mobile applications” that <strong>is</strong> reshap<strong>in</strong>g<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g around us, from our everyday<br />
lives <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>way</strong> that bus<strong>in</strong>esses and<br />
societies operate. Beh<strong>in</strong>d th<strong>is</strong> rapid growth<br />
of applications are several key enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
technologies, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g mobile broadband<br />
networks, sensors, man-mach<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>terfaces,<br />
cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g, big data and AI, which<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves are develop<strong>in</strong>g at a lightn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
pace. These technologies will converge and<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrate, not unlike a chemical reaction,<br />
<strong>to</strong> create brand new applications for<br />
products and services, and drive <strong>the</strong> digital<br />
transformation of all <strong>in</strong>dustries.<br />
“The first opportunity we see <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> video.<br />
Video has become <strong>the</strong> most popular<br />
form of content delivery <strong>in</strong> media, social,<br />
and professional communications, like<br />
market<strong>in</strong>g,” Hu said. “Video and images<br />
now account for more than 60% of mobile<br />
network traffic. Enterta<strong>in</strong>ment video<br />
<strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest part of th<strong>is</strong> market, with<br />
plenty of room for opera<strong>to</strong>r <strong>in</strong>volvement.<br />
In <strong>in</strong>dustrial applications, mobile video<br />
solutions for public safety, traffic<br />
surveillance, and log<strong>is</strong>tics are also brimm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with opportunity. And <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> video<br />
communications doma<strong>in</strong>, live video has<br />
become a huge global phenomenon.”<br />
Beyond video, <strong>the</strong> second major<br />
opportunity for carriers <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> household<br />
market. Right now, <strong>the</strong>re are around two<br />
billion households <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. Of <strong>the</strong>se, 1.3<br />
billion don’t have broadband connections,<br />
and 300 million have connections slower<br />
than 10 Mbps. These 1.6 billion households<br />
are an ideal market for wireless broadband.<br />
To date, more than 100 telecom opera<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
have deployed Huawei’s wireless-<strong>to</strong>-<strong>the</strong>-x<br />
solutions (WTTx), cover<strong>in</strong>g 30 million<br />
households.<br />
The third opportunity identified by Hu, <strong>the</strong><br />
vertical market, <strong>is</strong> on <strong>the</strong> verge of explosive<br />
growth. Mobile networks have become<br />
<strong>the</strong> key enabler of digital transformation,<br />
and aga<strong>in</strong>st th<strong>is</strong> backdrop, Hu encouraged<br />
opera<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> identify specific opportunities<br />
that can best leverage <strong>the</strong> capabilities<br />
of mobile communications, and <strong>the</strong>n<br />
adopt a fresh m<strong>in</strong>dset when it comes <strong>to</strong><br />
collaboration.<br />
In order <strong>to</strong> seize <strong>the</strong>se three opportunities<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> video, household, and vertical<br />
markets, ex<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g networks need <strong>to</strong> evolve<br />
from technology-centric <strong>to</strong> applicationcentric.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Hu, th<strong>is</strong> evolution<br />
depends on three key fac<strong>to</strong>rs: connectivity,<br />
architecture, and application-enablement<br />
platforms.<br />
1) Enhanced connectivity<br />
In order <strong>to</strong> connect millions of new<br />
applications for people and th<strong>in</strong>gs, future<br />
networks need enhanced connectivity,<br />
improved network performance, and new<br />
technology for new services. For example,<br />
applications with HD video need 10 Mbps<br />
network connections with end-<strong>to</strong>-end<br />
latency below 50 mill<strong>is</strong>econds. Beyond<br />
better support for video services, networks<br />
also need <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduce wide-area IoT<br />
technology for connections between th<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
and Cellular-V2X technology for connected<br />
vehicles.<br />
2) End-<strong>to</strong>-end cloud architecture<br />
An application-centric network needs<br />
end-<strong>to</strong>-end cloud architecture <strong>to</strong> achieve<br />
true elasticity. Huawei’s <strong>in</strong>novation focuses<br />
on full cloudification of mobile networks,<br />
from core <strong>to</strong> access—and especially air<br />
<strong>in</strong>terface—<strong>to</strong> help its cus<strong>to</strong>mers boost<br />
network performance and reduce overall<br />
costs.<br />
3) Application-enablement<br />
platforms (PaaS)<br />
Application-centric networks need strong<br />
application-enablement platforms. These<br />
platforms should provide APIs, data<br />
s<strong>to</strong>rage, data analytics capabilities, and<br />
cloud management services <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong><br />
open up network capabilities and accelerate<br />
application development.<br />
“At Huawei, we aim <strong>to</strong> support and<br />
enable <strong>the</strong> mobile ecosystem. We have<br />
made a lot of progress, and we want <strong>to</strong><br />
do more,” concluded Hu, lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />
announcement of X Labs.<br />
X Labs <strong>is</strong> a research platform designed <strong>to</strong><br />
explore three separate areas of mobile<br />
communications: people, verticals, and<br />
household. The mLab (short for “mobile<br />
user experience lab”) focuses on how<br />
<strong>to</strong> create immersive user experience <strong>in</strong><br />
emerg<strong>in</strong>g mobile applications like video,<br />
live stream<strong>in</strong>g, VR and AR. vLab focuses<br />
on vertical applications, explor<strong>in</strong>g how<br />
mobile technology can enable <strong>the</strong> digital<br />
transformation process of all vertical<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustries. The third lab <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> X Labs<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiative, hLab, focuses on connect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
more households and leverag<strong>in</strong>g broadband<br />
connections <strong>to</strong> develop smart home<br />

which will be relocated <strong>to</strong> an orbital slot as<br />
agreed with Spacecom.<br />
Exclusive rights <strong>to</strong> use all Ku-band<br />
transponders on AsiaSat 8 will be granted<br />
<strong>to</strong> Spacecom for a m<strong>in</strong>imum of four years<br />
for <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>is</strong>ion of commercial satellite<br />

AsiaSat will cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> be responsible<br />
for <strong>the</strong> satellite’s track<strong>in</strong>g, telemetry<br />

AsiaSat expects that Spacecom will<br />
become one of its <strong>to</strong>p cus<strong>to</strong>mers <strong>in</strong><br />
terms of revenue contribution once <strong>the</strong><br />
service term commences. Andrew Jordan,<br />
President & CEO of AsiaSat, said, “We<br />
welcome Spacecom as our latest cus<strong>to</strong>mer.<br />
AsiaSat 8’s superior performance<br />
offers an ideal fit for Spacecom’s needs.<br />
We look forward <strong>to</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong> strong<br />

AsiaSat granted patent for effective<br />
satellite connectivity <strong>to</strong> aircraft<br />
Asia Satellite has been granted a patent<br />
from <strong>the</strong> United States Patent and<br />
Trademark Office, titled, ‘Methods<br />
and Systems for Provid<strong>in</strong>g High-speed<br />
Connectivity <strong>to</strong> Aircraft.’ (US Patent No.<br />
9,425,888)<br />
The patent <strong>is</strong> about <strong>the</strong> methods and<br />
systems that enable effective aviation<br />
communication via satellite over a broad<br />
area at high altitude. Example methods<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> use of a wide-beam antenna on<br />
a satellite <strong>to</strong> provide a wide flatten coverage<br />
by transmitt<strong>in</strong>g signals at a frequency<br />
higher than 10 GHz and at a relatively low<br />
satellite power (EIRP) <strong>to</strong> avoid <strong>in</strong>terference<br />
with ground stations or adjacent satellites.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>the</strong> satellite system <strong>is</strong><br />
configured with a spot beam antenna <strong>to</strong><br />
receive signals from a mobile antenna<br />
on <strong>the</strong> aircraft at a different frequency of<br />
at least 13.75 GHz <strong>to</strong> achieve better ga<strong>in</strong><br />
for higher data throughput rate of <strong>the</strong><br />
connection.<br />
Dr. Roger Tong<br />
VP, Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Operations & CTO - AsiaSat<br />
With <strong>the</strong> use of a low-power wide beam<br />
antenna, <strong>the</strong> described system enables<br />
communication coverage for aircraft<br />
with fewer beams, fewer antennas and<br />
receivers onboard a satellite thus reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
its payload, hardware and ground stations<br />
requirements, and results <strong>in</strong> a more reliable<br />
service that can be achieved with less<br />
switch<strong>in</strong>g and traffic handover <strong>is</strong>sues.<br />
The same method and system can also<br />
be configured <strong>to</strong> provide connectivity <strong>to</strong><br />
an unmanned aviation vehicle (UAV) for<br />
establ<strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g immediate communication<br />
l<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>in</strong> emergency situation due <strong>to</strong> natural<br />
d<strong>is</strong>aster or warfare.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>vention was developed by Dr. Roger<br />
Tong, Vice President, Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
Operations and Chief Technical Officer of<br />
AsiaSat and h<strong>is</strong> team members, Fred Vong<br />
and Harry Leung. “Be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> satellite<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry, where technologies and user<br />
needs are rapidly chang<strong>in</strong>g, we recogn<strong>is</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> no boundary <strong>to</strong> our imag<strong>in</strong>ation and<br />
we have <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>novate <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong><br />
provide <strong>the</strong> best services <strong>to</strong> our cus<strong>to</strong>mers,”<br />
