Welcome…
What an eventful year 2016 has been – a mixture
of triumph and tragedy. We look back at how the
kindness and generosity of Yours readers has changed
lives (p14) and at some of the famous faces that we’ve
sadly said goodbye to this year (p24).
The period between Christmas and New Year is
a time for reflection – but it’s also a time to rest and
relax. In this enormous bumper issue we’ve got a huge
40-page puzzle pull-out. It’s packed with crosswords,
wordsearches, sudokus, codebreakers, logic problems
and much more. So put your feet up and enjoy some
puzzling fun (p63). Plus we’ve got easy one-pot meals
(p119) to save you time in the kitchen, comfy and
casual fashion (p34) and DIY beauty treats you can
make at home (p38).
GOOD to KNOW
ARE YOU DUE A
Christmas
windfall?
A fortune lies in old bank accounts, pensions
and investments. Here’s how to trace forgotten finances
Some £850m is languishing
in old current and savings
accounts – proving how
easy it can be to lose track
of our money! The internet
is littered with unregulated sites that
offer tracing services for a fee – but our
recommendations can genuinely help
you trace your money.
n Any information you can find on your
lost bank account – even if you don’t
find an account number – can be taken to
your bank or building society who may
be able to help. www.mylostaccount.org.
uk brings together the tracing schemes of
the British Bankers’ Association (0207 216
8909), the Building Societies’ Association
(0207 520 5900) and NS&I (including
old Post Office Savings Bank accounts).
Simply fill in the online application form
and they’ll respond within three months.
You can also check if one of your
relatives had an account frozen or
confiscated during the Second World War
via www.restoreuk.org.uk.
HOW TO CHECK IF YOU’VE WON!
n An employee typically accumulates a
dozen pensions over a working life, so it’s
easy to lose track – this helps explain why
£400 billion worth of retirement savings
go unclaimed.
Free help is at hand with the Pensions
Tracing Service (0345 600 2537).
It won’t find the money for you,
but it will give you details
of the pension scheme
administrators so you
can write to them and
find out how much
There are many
unregulated
websites offering to
trace money for a fee
you may have. The service has
information on more than 200,000
schemes.
From March, it should be
easier to view your pension pots
– including your State Pension – in
one place with the launch
n Lotteries – There is currently an unclaimed Lotto prize of
£8.1m and several of £1m! The rules say that if you’ve won,
you have six months (180 days) from the date of the draw
to claim. Miss the deadline and the money goes
to good causes.
Check your tickets at www.nationallottery.co.uk
n Premium bonds – There’s no limit for claiming NS&I
bond prizes and currently there is £52m up for grabs
including two unclaimed prizes of £100,000.
Search for outstanding prizes using the prize checker
at wwwnsandi.com or call free on 0500 007 007.
of the Pensions Dashboard.
So far, 11 providers
including Aviva and Standard
Life have signed up to the
project, which will be managed
by the Association of British
Insurers.
n You can recover
lost investment
trusts by contacting The
Association of Investment
Companies (0207 282 5555).
For help finding unit trusts
and OEICS, call the Investment
Association (0207 831 0898).
n To hunt down old life
insurance and endowment
policies, use the free website
www.policy detective.co.uk.
Another avenue to try is
the Unclaimed Assets
Register (www.uar.co.uk,
0844 481 8180) which holds
4.5m records from around 75
different providers. However, there is a
£25 fee per search.
n If you have share certificates,
contact the share registrar whose
name appears on the certificates.
If you think you own shares but
don’t know what you own, you can
contact each of the three main share
registrars – Capita Registrars (0871
664 0300), Computershare (0870 703
0143) and Equiniti (0871 384 2030).
BLOATING
TRY: Probiotics
If your tummy feels twice its
normal size after eating, or you
suffer from embarrassing wind,
you could benefit from taking
probiotics – specifically, a type
called Bacillus coagulans. This
tough strain of ‘friendly’ bacteria
is resistant to stomach acid and
helps to break down food as it
passes through your digestive
system. A strictly controlled
study found it was highly
successful in reducing both
bloating and wind in otherwise
healthy people.
n Try
Higher Nature
Pro-Daily (£4.50/30
tablets) available
from health shops or
www.highernature.
POOR SLEEP
TRY: A 5-HTP supplement
If you can’t remember the last time you had a
good night’s sleep, your stress levels might be to
blame. When you’re anxious, your stress response
is constantly firing and this stops you first falling
and then staying asleep. Nod off faster with a
supplement called 5-HTP, which boosts levels of the
happy hormone serotonin, which is then converted
to the sleep hormone melatonin at night, leading
to deeper and more restful sleep and a calmer you.
Arthritis
TRY: Yoga
Ease pain and stiffness in your
joints by 20 per cent with two
hour-long sessions of yoga a
week – and you’ll boost your
mood and energy levels too.
The researchers believe that
yoga is so effective because
it combines physical activity,
which helps to lubricate your
joints, with stress management
and relaxation techniques
that help you to
wellbeing.
uk or call 01529
TRY: Reflexology
By stimulating certain points on your
feet, a reflexologist could help to ease
anxiety and make you feel calmer.
One study found it could help to ease
feelings of nausea that accompany
panic attacks too. If you’re feeling
overwhelmed, try applying pressure
to the point in the webbing between
your big and second toes about one
finger width up your foot.
problems
n Try
Solgar 5-HTP
(£11.99/30)
capsules from
health shops
Headaches
TRY: Essential oils
Rubbing 2-3 drops of
lavender essential oil onto
your top lip and inhaling the
scent for 15 minutes could
help to reduce the severity
of your headache by 72 per
cent says a US study.
If your headache or migraine
is making your feel nauseous,
try popping a few drops of
peppermint essential oil on
a tissue and inhaling
it regularly.
BACK PAIN
feel good
TRY: Meditating
As unlikely as it sounds, spending ten minutes
a day practising mindfulness meditation could
help to ease back pain and improve your ability
to cope with pain when it does flare up. Walking
meditation (walking slowly focusing your attention
on how your body feels) works just as well as seated
practice, according to a US study.
n Try the Headspace App for a straightforward
introduction to mindfulness (www.headspace.
com) or check local listings for a class in your area
See your GP
HOT FLUSHES
ANXIETYTRY: Acupuncture
You could halve the number of hot flushes
you have by turning to acupuncture,
according to US researchers. In just eight
weeks, half of the women receiving
acupuncture treatment (which involves
inserting very fine needles into specific
points on your body) saw a 47 per
cent drop in the number
of hot flushes they were
experiencing, while a
quarter said the treatment
stopped them completely.
Most women saw the
benefits after just
three sessions.
Pam’s set
for anew
adventure!
The Call The Midwife cast
pictured in South Africa for
the Christmas special and
right Pam as much-loved
Sister Evangelina
The Christmas Call The Midwife
won’t be quite the same without Pam
Ferris as Sister Evangelina, but the
actress has another very exciting
festive TV treat up her sleeve!
By Pam Francis
As Pam Ferris
settles
down in front
of the fire this
Christmas to
watch Call The Midwife,
there could well be a little
twinge of wishing she was
there with her fellow nuns
of Nonnatus House, who
filmed the festive special in
South Africa.
“I stupidly killed myself
off before they went to
Africa,” she jokes, referring to
the stroke which led to the
TV death of her character
Sister Evangelina earlier
this year. “That was a dumb
thing to do. Away from the
cameras they had an amazing
time there, sightseeing and
watching dolphins!”
But any regrets won’t last
long, for Pam’s talents will
‘I threatened to do
a random dance on
my last day on Call
The Midwife’
still be on display on TV
this Christmas. Along with
an all-star cast, she is one
of the voices in Channel
4’s animated version of
the children’s classic We’re
Going on a Bear Hunt, the
international bestseller
penned by Michael Rosen.
A delighted Pam is the
voice of Grandma, along
with Olivia Colman as Mum
and Mark Williams as Dad.
Even though she is not a
grandma in real life, Pam was
thrilled to be asked to voice
the role by the animators,
the same people who made
The Snowman. “They were
adamant that there are not
enough strong grandmas on
television,” says Pam. “The
Grandma character is a newly
widowed woman, but she is
not in the eye of grief. She is
surviving, and that for me sets
the tone of the whole piece
which among other things,
deals with sadness and loss.
“It’s subtle and realistic
and I found it very touching,”
she adds, describing the
adventure of four children,
Stan, Katie, Rosie and Max,
a baby and a dog who are left
home alone before Christmas
when their parents go to the
rescue of Grandma whose car
has broken down.
Spurred on by Katie’s love
of grizzly bears, they go off on
A big adventure: A scene
from Channel 4’s We’re
Going on a Bear Hunt,
made by the animators of
The Snowman
a bear hunt across fields and
rivers until dog Rufus picks
up the scent of one.
“I already knew about the
book’s reputation and there
is almost a melting nostalgia
when you mention it to
children and their parents
who adore it,” says Pam.
“The concept of a bear
hunt is an adventure which is
impossible, and I think when
you are six years old that the
whole of life would seem an
impossibility. The future is a
complete big bear hunt!”
Married with no
children, Pam does not
have grandchildren to read
to, but there are dozens of
youngsters hanging on her
every word when she calls
in to help at her village
primary school.
“We are lucky enough to
have a school which brings
the village to life. I’m in and
out of there reading to the
children, although not that
particular book,” she adds.
With time she has had
on her hands since she left
Midwife, she also helps
out at a charity called The
Fifth Trust which provides
a safe and fulfilling way of
life for adults with learning
difficulties, coaching them
to achieve their potential
through productive work in
the community.
“They have a vineyard
where they make wine, tea
rooms where they make
cakes and a garden centre. It’s
a wonderful organisation.”
And she still often chats
with fellow Call The Midwife
cast members including
‘The concept of
a bear hunt is an
adventure which
is impossible, and
I think when you
are six years old
the whole of life
would seem an
impossibility’
Judy Parfitt (Sister Monica
Joan) Helen George (Trixie
Franklin) and Jenny Agutter
(Sister Julienne).
“We have a lot of dogs in
common so there is good
reason to keep in touch!”
says Pam. She actually left
the show because filming
was too far away for her to
commute back to East Kent
to look after her two dogs,
Stanley and Elsie.
But does she miss playing
Sister Evangelina? “I was
deeply fond of Evangelina,
and when people asked
me I would quite often
cry because she was a real
person and I felt she was
astounding in her courage
and dedication.
“I love her so intensely
and I do miss her. I also miss
the girls and being with a
star chat
group. In which other TV
show do you have 12 women,
all fabulous actresses, sitting
round a table doing a scene?
I also miss wearing my habit
which kept me so warm.”
One thing she does
not miss however, is
spending hours in her nun’s
uncomfortable wimple
which she says was ‘murder’
since you couldn’t hear what
people were saying.
“I threatened to do a
random dance on it my last
day, but managed to restrain
myself,” she laughs, revealing
that her most treasured
leaving gift from cast and
crew was a paper origami
wimple from the costume
department which has pride
of place on her mantlepiece.
“Best present anybody could
have,” she adds.
But one of the things
she loves most about taking
a break from TV, is the
time she spends with her
husband, retired actor
Roger Frost.
“It’s been absolutely
heaven. Days when we don’t
have to see anybody else or
go out are the best days of all
really because that is what
you sacrifice when you are
working all the time,” says
Pam who just celebrated their
30th anniversary “going for
lots of lovely lunches”.
Retirement is currently
a long way from her thoughts.
“I am waiting for a job that
will set me on fire. Like Bear
Hunt, life is an awfully big
adventure. You can only go
from day to day. And at this
moment I am loving my life.”
n We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is
on Channel 4 on Christmas Eve
at 7.30pm and will be repeated
St Pierre Cathedral!
Potter around history
Geneva’s old town is the largest historic
town in Switzerland, packed with quirky
old treasures among its warren of cobbled
alleyways. Towering above it all is St Pierre’s
Cathedral, an old Protestant temple once at
the centre of the Reformation movement.
Climb 157 steps up to the top of
the cathedral to look out over breathtaking
panoramas of the city and
nearby mountains (costs 5 CHF), or head
below stairs to discover fascinating
archaeological vaults. Drop by on a
Linger on the lake
Lake Geneva is the star attraction of
the city as is the spectacular Jet d’Eau, a
dazzling water jet that projects 500 litres
of water 140m into the sky every second.
If you want to explore the lake further,
take a cruise along the Rhône, which goes
from Geneva to Verbois and back. Along
the way, you can take in the flora and fauna
of the wild countryside and even keep your
eyes peeled for the beguiling bronze little
mermaid who lives on the lake.
Or for something extra special, come
aboard the Savoie, one of Geneva’s fleet
of boats from the glamorous Bell Époque
era, and prepare to be wined and dined
on their legendary gastronomic cruise.
paragliding or even cross-country skiing.
