PAUL EWINS, TECHNICAL
CONTRIBUTOR
My love affair for these cars started at a very
young age. Mum and dad bought a 1981 Subaru
station wagon and joined the Subaru 4WD Club
of SA when I was just 18 months old. I spent my
early years exploring this great country of ours
in the back of our Subaru, with dad constantly
piloting our vehicle to places people in the big
four wheel drives said we couldn’t.
My most memorable trip was our journey
across the Simpson Desert in 1988 when I was
just 6. Twenty years later, I did it all again under
my own steam in a 1987 Subaru Wagon, modified
with a suspension lift and bigger tyres.
The Subaru 4WD Club of SA is still going
strong today. We visit places like the Riverland,
Flinders Ranges and Peake (sand property
50km out of Tailem Bend) regularly. A team of
people including myself assist new members in
learning the skills of off road driving and most
people come away with a new appreciation of the
vehicle’s capabilities.
If you own a Subaru, get out and explore it’s off
road capabilities. You’ll need to be well prepared
and take some precautions.
Keep an eye out in future issues for everything
you need to do to get the most out of your
ownership experience.

In this issue we check out ...
Subaru VIZIV-7 Concept
Debuts in Los Angeles
EWS
Since our first look at the Subaru VIZIV Concept
vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, the
latest images yield an even greater insight
into the identity of the vehicle. With reported
dimensions of 5200 x 2030 x 1860mm and a
2990mm wheelbase, this makes it around 10%
larger than the Outback, Subaru’s largest SUV.
Adding to the EyeSight® system currently
available on Outback and Forester, driver assist
technology uses radar technology including
adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning
and pre-collision braking to help avoid vehicles,
obstacles and pedestrians - even around
corners. It also offers automatic reversing.
Now seen in a 5-door wagon format, it is taking
shape nicely. It will be interesting to see what
engine options will be proposed as the concept
develops.
Reports suggest the VIZIV-7 Concept may be
introduced into the North American market in
early 2018.
OUT &
ABOUT
Adelaide Hills hides a
recently crowned world
class ale! ...
If you like the idea of quality over quantity,
chances are you’ll love craft beer. By
definition, craft beer involves a small batch
process, premium ingredients and plenty of
skill from the brewing team to extract long, full
flavours.
The best way to score an instant appreciation
of craft beer is to a try a paddle or a beer
board; a tasting sample of around 6 beers.
Most breweries offer the paddle with or without
a brewery tour. Accompanied by tasting notes,
it’s a fun way for a quick educational on the
flavouring ingredients. But best of all, it helps
identify a favourite or two to pursue later in larger
volumes. It’s also a good way of tackling the
process without burning a hole in your pocket,
as craft beers come at a cost; around $8 a
schooner. Expect to pay around $15 for a paddle
of 6 beers.
In the Adelaide Hills, there’s three breweries
that regularly gain our patronage, but for different
reasons. Interestingly, they all use the all grain
brewing process, where the malt grains are
soaked in water to extract a fuller flavour. But
each has their niche.
Grumpy’s Brewhaus
OUT & ABOUT
Grumpy’s is located a short hop off the freeway
in Verdun, just out of Hahndorf. It’s an unusual
establishment, relatively small, dark and
moody inside, with an outdoor eating area.
Outside, it’s not big on ambience due to its
proximity to the freeway, but dive inside and it’s
quickly forgotten.
Grumpy’s specialise in tasty wood fired pizza
with a number of specialty toppings. We like the
Moby Dick, Swine and Brine, and Grumpy Goat,
but there’s quite a broad selection.
Their beers are not as e xpansive as some
others, but there’s always something that hits the
spot, be it an Oatmeal Stout, German Dark Lager
(Dunkel) or an American style Pale Ale.
Expect to pay around $30 for a pizza to feed
two and normal craft beer prices. The mix
between tasty tucker and beer is enough to see
our return on an occasional basis. That and the
fact it’s never that busy, so you can always rely
on friendly and fast service.

Editor’s Note: Grumpy’s was significantly
unknown at this stage when it will re-open.
Lobethal Bierhaus
If you are looking for a great food and beer
venue, you’ll find it here, a fact not lost on solid
patronage. There’s a big open fire place which
adds to the ambience in winter, cosseted with
comfy lounge chairs.
The Bierhaus offers a wide variety of beers with
ten regulars and six specialty brews. Favourites
include the Choc Oatmeal stout, Red Truck
Porter and the India Pale Ale.
The food is consistently good, with local
produce featured across the menu. Inside it’s
a big, open plan number with the stainless
kettles in full view. There’s a welcoming relaxed
feel without being pretentious like some trendy
watering holes.
The Lobethal Bierhaus scores our gong for the
best eating establishment of the three.
OUT & ABOUT
Prancing Pony Brewery
The Pony started from humble beginnings,
tucked away in the Mt Barker industrial estate.
But since moving to its new location opposite
Duttons in Totness, the brewery has really hit its
straps.
The new building is big and open, decorated
with character laden timber furniture with the
stainless kettles proudly on display.
The Pony recently picked up the title of
Supreme Champion Beer for its India Red Ale at
the International Beer Challenge (IBC), an event
that attracts the best brewers from more than 30
countries around the world. Not a bad accolade!
The Dark Ale picked up a Silver Award. IBC
judges include writers, publicans, retailers,
importers and brewers.
Like the Lobethal Bierhaus, the beer range
is expansive. Our favourites include the
Sledgehammer, Black Ale and Sunshine Ale, but
each has their own moreish character.
The Pony offers an all-day menu with a range of
snacks and some themed food over winter like curries
and pizza. The burgers are delicious; chicken or beef
with rich chutney served with the lot. Presented with
chunky fries, they hit the spot every time.
Overall, the Pony gets our vote for the best beer
– some would even go as far to say world class!

CHANGE GEARS
There’s nothing better than
a weekend beach escape to
rejuvenate the senses, soak
up some rays, feed the fish
and take a leisurely paddle.
And while there’s plenty of
waterways around Adelaide,
there’s something special
about getting away
Mike Pavey
The Yorke Peninsula is an ideal weekender,
only a couple of hours drive west of
Adelaide and even better if you can tag
on a couple of extra days. It’s a fact not lost on
South Aussies; about 400,000 make the trip
each year which hints to its popularity. Diversity
is the key. You can hire a beach shack, stay at
a caravan park, camp in designated bush or
beach campsite, some even within the Innes
National Park down south. There’s something to
suit everyone!
It’s matter of opinion but I reckon the tourists
generally flock to the east coast to holiday
destinations like Stansbury. And it’s not surprising
as the beaches are sublime.
Camping enthusiasts are well catered for.
The council runs 19 bush camps across the
peninsula, some with facilities and others without,
so you can enjoy the natural surroundings
without hemming yourself into a tightly packed
caravan park. Bush campsites must be booked
through the council unless within the national
park and the latter can be booked online before
you travel, at the visitor centres or at the selfregistration
stations at the park entrance.
In addition to camping, the national park is
popular for its rugged coastline, bush walks and
pioneer ruins. And sharing it with the natural
wildlife is always part of the attraction. Large
campgrounds suitable for caravans can be found
at Stenhouse Bay and Pondalowie Bay.
The fertile waters along the coastline are
popular for the fishing fraternity with whiting,
garfish, squid, snook, snapper, tommy ruffs,
salmon and crabs all popular. If you don’t have
a boat or kayak, you’ll find jetties at Wallaroo,
Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Stenhouse Bay.
The area is also popular for Blue swimmer crabs
which combined with freshly caught squid and
whiting make a delightful dining experience.
Exploring the coast by kayak or canoe is
another enjoyable activity. You can launch off
the beach at any of the designated entry points

and beach driving is allowed in some areas.
Be wary of the soft sand and deep seaweed
which frequents the area, as it can mask hidden
dangers. You can paddle close to shore around
the coves or combine it with a fishing trip. If
fishing doesn’t appeal, fresh fish is generally
available in the surrounding townships.
The pubs enjoy good patronage thanks
predictably to cold beer and good tucker. We’ve
dined at the Port Victoria pub on more than a
few occasions and left on each time with full and
contented bellies.
KID-O-BUNK
BY DISC-O-BED
Camping just got more comfortable with Disc-O-
Bed’s modular disc bed system. It can be used
in a tent or camper to save space, or even used
at home to accommodate guests.
Kid-O-Bunk with Organisers $449
Ideal for kids aged 7-12, the Kid-O-Bunk puts
the fun back into camping. Differing from most
kid’s bunks, it’s very stable and strong. The
low centre of gravity makes it safe to use, even
when there’s only one child on the top bunk. The
beams are strong enough for kids to stand on
without fear of bending. But best of all, it’s easy
to assemble from the compact suitcase-style
format. Other attributes include the rounded
legs that won’t damage tent floors, sturdy steel
construction and flexible packaging – it easily
converts from a bunk, to single cots or to a day
use lounge.
Bunk dimensions = 164 x 83cm, capacity 91kg
per single bed
Cam-O-Bunk Large with Organisers $499
The Cam-O-Bunk builds on the versatility of
the Kid-O-Bunk with extra-strength components
and a larger stretcher to sleep adults. Bunk
dimensions = 208 x 83cm, capacity 227kg per
single bed.
ECH
TORQUE
Paul Ewins
TECH TORQUE
Knowing the fundamentals
of safe vehicle recovery is
an essential element of all
terrain pursuits. Paul Ewins
explains.
Vehicle recovery is an inherent part of off
road driving, as sooner or later you’ll land
yourself in a situation where a recovery is
required. Knowing how to safely recover yourself
may be the difference between a long walk to
find help, injury or even death. While that may
sound a little melodramatic, it’s a sad fact, but
people die or are permanently injured in vehicle
recoveries every year.
Here’s some really basic steps you can take to
help prevent becoming marooned:
Use the ‘Stop, Think, Observe, Proceed’
method each time you come to an obstacle.
Understand that too much acceleration is as
bad as not enough. Backing off slightly, may
often allow the wheels to re-gain traction.
Stop as soon as you lose traction, as you’ll only
dig a hole and make the recovery harder than it
needs to be.
Consider reducing tyre pressures.
Make a clear path for the tyres and dig out
from underneath the car if necessary.
Use traction planks like Maxtrax as a first resort.
Use only rated recovery points - tow tongue
replacements such as the Hayman Reese style
hooks are excellent.
NEVER use a tow-ball as a recovery point.
When you become stuck, always ensure your
hand brake is on and the car is in gear.
Maintain constant communication using a UHF
radio.
Double check straps and shackles.
Gear selection is crucial – ensure the car
being recovered is using a higher gear than the
car doing the recovery as you don’t want to be
pulling against the car’s gearing.
Ensure all spectators are well clear - 1.5 x
length of strap is a good guide.
Always start off with least amount of momentum.
If the car isn’t freed after 4 – 5 attempts, stop
and re-assess the situation. You may need to do
some more digging or try a different approach.
As soon as the car is free, stop and remove all
straps and remember to wash and clean your
straps when you get home.
