A
luxury
development of new homes in a soughtafter
Surrey border village has welcomed its first
residents – after the majority of available properties
were snapped up in just a matter of weeks.
Clayshaw Place, a collection of two, three and four bedroom
homes in Rudgwick was released for sale at the beginning
of October and out of the 15 homes available to buy, 12
had been reserved by purchasers by mid-November.
Selling agent Roger Coupe said Clayshaw Place is the
most successful new home scheme he has worked
on in recent years, with more than 40 viewings
arranged over the opening weekend alone.
Progress moved so quickly that contracts were
exchanged on a number of properties by the middle
of November and the first residents were due to
move into their new homes before Christmas.
Roger Coupe, who specialises in land and new home
sales, puts Clayshaw Place’s popularity down to the
quality of specification and thoughtful design of the
properties, by locally based developers Thakeham, and
without question the desirability of the location.
Roger said: “Rudgwick has always been a popular address
with homebuyers as it is an attractive village to live in
with local services including a doctors’ surgery, dentist,
hairdresser and chemist. There is also a Cooperative Food
Store incorporating a Post Office counter. There are good
schools and great travel links for Horsham and Guildford.
“Billingshurst based developer Thakeham has made an enormous
effort to be a responsible neighbour to the adjoining properties
and during the course of construction has kept the site and
access routes smart and clean. This considerate approach
has followed through in the method of construction of the
properties, along with the architecture of the homes blending
with the local area, and homebuyers can clearly see this in
the quality of the build. And I think, in part, that this has only
added to the success of the sales at the development.”
Construction on the site, located just off Church Street, began
in spring 2016 and is expected to be completed by early
April. A total of 25 properties are being built, 10 of which are
affordable homes including shared ownership and rental. A
landscaped area with ponds, trees and a footpath into the village
centre is also being created as part of the new development.
Buyers from across Sussex and Surrey have been
attracted to the site, Roger said, with the majority of
enquiries from within a twenty-five mile radius including
some from the residents of the village itself.
“We’ve seen first time buyers using the popular Government’s
Help-to-Buy scheme, through to those who are moving
across the market or even downsizing,” he added.

How’s your waistband? Feeling a little snug? There’s no escaping it, we’re back
at the point we reach every new year when a look in the mirror can be a terrible
shock, when a bloated and puffy Mr/Mrs/Ms Blobby looks back at you.
Whether it was the lethal discovery of Aldi mince pies (amazing for
the money – they beat Fortnum’s in a blind tasting! – let’s have another
six!) or that killer recipe for home-made Baileys, which was circulating
on Facebook in December, containing lavish double cream and a whole
tin of condensed milk, January brings the need to fight the flab.
The choice of fad diets becomes ever more bewildering, but whether you
opt to go cold turkey on sugar, ban all carbohydrates, go vegan/gluten free
Deliciously Ella style, or make like Fred Flinstone on the Paleo regime, you can’t
escape the hard fact that food deprivation hell won’t be enough on its own.
In the words of the great King Julien: You’ve got to move it, move
it. Or else risk being serenaded by that other great character from
Madagascar, Moto Moto (‘I like em big, I like em chunky…’)
Of course, this is also the time of year when gyms and health clubs are offering
enticing deals to sign up at a reduced rate. We’ve all done it once, haven’t we?
Only to see that chunk of cash disappearing from the current account each
month – from the comfort of our sofa. When it’s cold outside, who can face
the thought of driving to the gym and coming home again with wet hair?
How much easier then, to have the fitness facilities just a short waddle
from that sofa – and your bed – in a house that has it all laid on.
The dream is the indoor pool, with the fully fitted gym, plus sauna
– and not forgetting the hot tub, which is a great way to pretend
you’re working out while basically having a nice hot bath.

Editor’s
Letter
It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a year since I wrote
my last editor’s letter before heading off on maternity
leave. In the past twelve months the WT team have held
two Wealden Times Fairs and produced a dozen beautiful
Wealden Times magazines and the same number again of
Surrey Homes, so there’s certainly been lots to catch up on.
In my absence, Jennifer Stuart-Smith and Maggie
Alderson have made sure that everything has
run smoothly – I’d like to say a big thank you to
them both for looking after the magazines.
It comes as no surprise that I’m starting my first month back
with two gorgeous interiors. The first – Alexis Wylie’s ancient
farmhouse (page 38) – is full of the styling quirks that the
designer has become renowned for, whilst Geoff and Annie
Waring have created a light and contemporary family home
within an Arts & Crafts house in Tunbridge Wells (page 66).
Fashion & Beauty Editor, Helen has been on the hunt for
simple, stylish white shirts for our fashion feature – update
your wardrobe with her delicate picks on page 88. She has also

It’s not uncommon, when selling a high-end house, for the
owners to throw in a perk to tempt buyers. It might be
a sports car, a year’s membership at the local golf club or
even – in the case of developers – a generous wedge of cashback.
The key is to match the freebie to the kind of person
you think will be viewing your property... So, when the couple
who were downsizing and leaving their capacious farmhouse
near Bodiam, decided to include a pair of donkeys in the
inventory – it was just the carrot needed to prompt a purchase.
Thirteen years later, and Viking and Ping Pong, are
still happily grazing in the paddock outside the Wylie
family’s striking tile-hung and brick farmhouse. Truth be
told, the donkeys were a welcome bonus rather than a
deal-clincher, but they do seem to fit right in with Ally,
Fergus and their three children Finnbhar, 16, Tabby,
15, and Jonjo, 10, plus an assortment of animals.
“The further we drove down the drive, the more I knew
we’d found the perfect home,” says Ally, who grew up in
Northiam. “We wanted a reclusive spot, with no passing
traffic and some outbuildings to play with.” What they
found was all of those things and a lot more: an imposing
farmhouse on top of a grassy knoll, a three-kiln oast and
bagging shed as well as weatherboarded and tiled stables
which you look down on from the kitchen window. As
kitchen-window views go, it doesn’t get much better.
As well as the rustic stable yard, anyone lucky enough to
do the washing up gets a view across a sloping lawn, past
mature trees and out to the post-and-rail paddocks that are
home to Viking, Ping Pong and Tabby’s hunter Leno. Take a
look out of any window, and you are met with views of hop
gardens, ancient woodland and the steep-sided gullies typical
of the High Weald. They are views that, one would imagine,
have hardly changed since the house was built in 1490.

sensitively updated over the years, with the masterful
addition of a kitchen extension – where we arrive, and from
where we enjoy the jaw-dropping view. “The extension
is a legacy of my Pa,” says Ally, who built it soon after
he died. Her father, Geoffrey Rainbird, was a respected
architect, so it is a very fitting tribute as well as the perfect
family space. “We practically live in here,” she says.
The ‘distressed’ cream kitchen is by Chalon and the
Aga an electric version put in to replace an older, oil-fired
model: “The Aga we took out was so old, it ended up
in the Aga museum!”. A pale limestone floor helps to

wanted to give me something I couldn’t lose,” she jokes.
Along an impressive, timbered hallway, dotted with
family photographs and mementoes, we come to the ‘snug’
– perhaps the second most popular room, as far as the
Wylie family is concerned: “It used to be freezing in here,
as it’s got two outside walls,” says Ally. “So we battened out
the room, added insulation, then lined it with scaffolding
boards.” The scaffold boards give the room a cosy chaletfeel,
and it’s a feature that is repeated in other spaces. Bright
pictures, of African scenes, cover the walls, and colourful
cushions top a huge green sofa. Another theme is revealed...
In the mid-1980s, Ally went travelling in Africa, and was
intending to stay for a year. In fact, she stayed for 13 years,
during which time she spent a couple of years at college,
studying interior design and architectural draughting. She now
runs The Rainbird interior design consultancy, a company that
offers others a taste of Ally’s African-lodge-meets-ski-chaletmeets-cosy-farmhouse
style. It’s hard to sum up but it works.
Next to the snug, divided merely by vertical beams, is
a classic farmhouse living room, with several armchairs
and a couple of decent sofas. As we sit down for a cuppa,
and to talk about the house, Titus the Jack Russell terrier
tries a couple of the chairs for size, before settling on a
cream chair with appropriate dog-printed cushion. An
inglenook fireplace is home to a Vermont-style woodburner
with two large log baskets on either side – as
well as a felt-work elephant tucked into a nook.
Every sideboard features family photos and trophies – this
is obviously a very active household, as Ally confirms:

A water tank was removed to make room for Fergus’s
dressing room, and has fitted cupboards – with fabric
and chicken-wire fronts – in every unused space. “I’m
good at organising spaces,” says Ally, with justifiable
confidence. “Your house will feel twice the size, if
organised properly,” she says, while rearranging her
beautiful collection of African and other handbags...
Back down the stairs, the first floor is home to the
children’s bedrooms as well as a very pretty spare room

Next door, in order, are Finnbhar, Tabby and Jonjo’s
rooms. Each is a den of posters, sports-team photos
and, in the case of Tabby’s room, lots of rosettes. Ally
has rationalised and organised each room with her own
distinctive design techniques – including more chalet-style
horizontal boards and clever storage spaces – while allowing
the children’s own taste and style to shine through.
This thoughtful mother has also designed the most
incredible den for her children and their friends, upstairs
in the former hop-processing shed across the lawn. All
reclaimed materials and ‘industrial chic’ the space is leagues
above your average playroom and perfect for teenagers.
The den’s walls are covered in corrugated iron, which
were retrieved from various local farmyards, or reclaimed
scaffold boards, and a tractor tyre has been topped with
planks and turned into a table. Distractions include a
drum kit, pool table, dart board and a flat-screen TV –
of course. Best of all, the blinds – which look like old
hop pockets – are made from hessian grain sacks.
Downstairs, reached via French doors which face out on to
the garden and the same enviable views, is Ally’s office and
work room. Not what you might expect to find in a barn, the
room is filled with luscious fabric samples, wallpaper books
and haberdasher’s goodies. Thick, sisal-type carpet, as found
throughout the house, adds to the rustic charm. It is from
this room that she plans her interior design schemes... one
of the most striking of which is also just across the lawn.
Converted oasts, in Kent and Sussex at least, are
commonplace. This conversion, completed twelve years
ago and used by the Wylies as guest accommodation, is
also a holiday let – and is ‘something else’. Also reached
by an outside staircase, once inside the oast you’re met
with the most gorgeous open-plan kitchen and living

The kitchen area comes with a butler sink and huge,
chunky butcher’s block, complementing a country-style
table and cream-painted dresser that is home to an array
of blue and white willow-pattern crockery. Overhead,
stencilled black numbers on the beams are a reminder
of the oast’s former purpose... if the hop gardens visible
from the windows aren’t enough of a reminder.
Behind the living and eating area, the three roundels of
the oast have been ingeniously converted into two circular
bedrooms with four-metre-high ceilings. The middle
roundel, on the other hand, has been transformed into two
curved-walled wash rooms, one with a classic claw-footed
cast iron bath and the other a walk-in wet room.

As you step down into each of the bedrooms, it
would be easy to imagine that you were inside a castle
turret and the classic, luxurious furnishings add to this
impression. The main bedroom contains a regal, fourposter
bed that belonged to Ally’s parents, carefully
chosen dark furniture and overhead, a spectacular wirework
chandelier: “I actually bought it in Africa, although
they are made locally to here,” says Ally. The table-top
lamps, with bead and feather trim, she commissioned.
Ally is a fount of knowledge, when it comes to great
suppliers of items less ordinary. Reclaimed, upcycled
or imported from Africa one can only imagine that her
contacts book is bulging. If you love the look, but lack
the contacts, maybe you should drop her a line...

Julie Simpson reflects on a festive-filled three days at
Wealden Times Midwinter Fair 2016

We’ve had so many lovely
comments about this year’s
Midwinter Fair but one
that particularly resonated was from
stand-holder and furniture designer
Steve Armitage from Huutt who said
“we feel that we’re now part of a very
vibrant and growing community of
independent, creative retailers – proud
to serve our region” and I’d like to
add to that that their region is very,
very proud of them. All of them.
The talent, energy, creativity and
enthusiasm of the 250 retailers who
attended this year’s Wealden Times
Midwinter Fair in November was
amazing. The high entry standards for
exhibitors set by the WT Fairs team
really shone through. Visitors were
delighted by the quality and variety
that was on offer with stands selling
everything from beautiful clothes and
accessories to home and garden ware,
gifts and fabulous food and drink. And
they all left laden down with goodies.
Despite the fact that Christmas was on
the horizon, chats on the door with
visitors leaving the fair suggested that as
many purchases were made for personal
consumption as were bought as gifts!
Food is always a big part of any
good event, as is a great cup of coffee
or a glass of fizz. Coffee Real, Hush
Heath Winery and Cocolicious made
sure no one went thirsty at the fair
while a fleet of street food vehicles fed
us all with a delicious range of dishes.
Every taste bud was catered for with
Italian, Indonesian, gluten free, healthy
salads and a traditional afternoon
tearoom being just a few of the
offerings available to hungry shoppers.
The Hop Farm was a new venue
for us this year and it proved a
great success, providing masses and
masses of good parking and easy
access for visitors coming from Kent,
Sussex, Surrey and further afield.
We’d like to thank our friends
and sponsors, estate agents Harpers
& Hurlingham, for their continued
support of our fairs and their unfailing
good humour and generosity in
raising funds for charity. Their raffle
at this year’s Midwinter Fair raised
£1,565.00 for Cancer Research.
Here at Wealden Times, we’re now
looking forward to our Midsummer
Fair at Hole Park on 8, 9 & 10 June.
The theme for the festival which
accompanies the summer event will
be wellbeing and gardening and
we’ll be releasing the programme

Geoff and Annie Waring had pondered for some time
the idea of upping sticks in Islington and finding
a greener life for themselves and their two young
children. They wanted a bigger garden and easy access to
the countryside and with his work as the art director for a
glossy fashion magazine Geoff needed a train line that would
go into Charing Cross. Annie had a successful business
hand painting bone china pieces for sale through shops like
Liberty and Thomas Goode so she could work anywhere.
As is often the case, it was while in Greece, sitting in
a taverna with time to muse, that they decided to make
the dream a reality and on their return the wheels were
put in motion. Tunbridge Wells seemed like a good base
from which to search for properties and the brief was
fairly straightforward – a biggish garden, not a busy road,
easy access to the station and preferably Victorian.
Needless to say, that’s not exactly what they ended up with.
Smitten by the idea of half an acre of garden and easy walking
distance from the station they went to view a property in a
rather unusual road where all the houses on one side had been
constructed in the 1920s by one builder, Mr Bates. He was
evidently a man of some stature – all the manhole covers in the
road bear his name – and, having bought a plot from the

of tiny rooms, the internal walls were all taken away and, with
the addition of a single storey extension, the Warings have
created a fabulous big room that really does feel like the heart of
the home
Abergavenny Estate, he set about building a street of houses
where each one represented a different vernacular style. So
wander down the road past the Georgian rectory, the Victorian
villa and the rustic country cottage until you come to the Arts
and Crafts house and that is where the Warings now live.
The previous owners had been in the house for over
thirty years and, having evidently done a lot at the start,
but very little since, it was a temple to 1970s design –
avocado bathrooms, swirly carpets, floral wallpaper and
depressingly dark woodwork. But Geoff and Annie had a
history of taking on major projects and with their combined
artistic talent they have created an incredibly stylish, light
and contemporary family home but one that still pays a
respectful nod to the original Arts and Crafts vision.
Entering the house you come into a spacious and
unusually shaped hall that has a multitude of doors, stairs,
cupboards and even a fireplace – not an easy space to work
with. Originally, it was all dark brown woodwork but in
common with the rest of the house the Warings have

gone for a light and bright Scandi style, painting the walls
in a neutral tone and the woodwork white. More light is
thrown into the room by a mirror atop the painted base of
an old sideboard – found in the basement of their very first
home which has travelled with them ever since. But what
really catches the eye is a truly beautiful and eyecatching
decorative radiator – one of the four that are original
to the house and all have been carefully renovated.
The kitchen leads off the hall. Once a network of tiny
rooms – scullery, pantry, outside loo etc., the internal walls
were all taken away and, with the addition of a single storey
extension, the Warings have created a fabulous big room
that really does feel like the heart of the home. At one end
a picture window looks out over the rambling garden and
beyond to Tunbridge Wells, and rather cleverly it has been
framed by painting the surrounding wall a very dark grey –
Mercury by Fired Earth. By painting the imposing fireplace
at the other end of the kitchen in the same colour, Annie
ties the big space together. She also explains that it’s a very
simple and quick way of completely changing the look of
the room. In recent years these feature walls have been white
(“too cold”), dark maroon (“great”) and green (“hideous”)!

The garden end has a long table created from an old
GPO desk bought for £1 at an office clearance sale. It’s
surrounded by some funky colourful chairs all of which have
travelled with the Warings from home to home. They both
have an aversion to creating a “look” and feel passionate
about living in a home filled with an eclectic collection of
pieces that tell their own story and reflect the history of the
family. A strategy that works especially well when coupled
with the stunning and mostly original artwork that is
evident everywhere, much of which is Annie’s own work.
The kitchen end of the space is dominated by a freestanding
unit painted in Farrow & Ball Slipper White.
Featuring big and bold is a magnificent set of scales, which
despite the pounds and ounces calibration is still in frequent
use. On a weekend away in Aldeburgh, Geoff spotted them in
a junk shop but sadly it was closed. However, on his next visit
they were still there and so he had to buy them – apparently
they had come from the next door butcher’s shop. The lights
over the unit are also very striking. They are a Swedish design,
suspended by fishing line and cleverly counterweighted
so they can be raised and lowered as required.

A very stylish and very light sitting room stands at the other
end of the house, the light thanks to the original Crittall
leaded windows on three sides. The previous owners had
covered these iconic windows with secondary glazing but
despite the inevitable heat loss the Warings felt duty bound
to return them to their original splendour and beautiful
heavy-duty velvet and linen curtains keep in the warm on
cold nights. Because it’s a north-facing room the walls are
painted in Fired Earth’s Ambergris, a warm earthy tone,
which sets off the cool marble fireplace. Annie loves the
fact that there are really deep windowsills throughout the
house, a great opportunity to display her prized collection
of jugs, plates and assorted ceramics. These vary from oneoff
unique treasures, through pocket money purchased
presents from her children and a few of her own pieces.
One end of the room looks a little different. With shelves
filled with books and vinyl and a funky Philippe Starck
Perspex chair and desk, this is definitely Geoff’s space. On
the walls are some striking black and white photos – a small
part of his large collection amassed over the years.

Annie has her space, too. Having switched her creative
energy from ceramics to oil painting when the children were
young, she now spends a great deal of time in a north-facing
studio – a fairly recent addition – just off the sitting room.
This is where she creates the still life oil paintings in mainly
earthy tones for which she has become justifiably acclaimed.
However, for cosy winter evenings they are more likely to
be found in the family room, originally the dining room, at
the other end of the house – always toasty warm thanks to
a newly installed wood burner. When they moved in there
were two things Annie wanted in their new home: parquet
flooring in the hall and a panelled room. The parquet flooring
hasn’t happened yet but the panelled room most definitely
has. Being a creative duo the Warings went to B&Q and

white. Thanks to the shadows cast by these 6mm thick strips,
believe me you really wouldn’t know it wasn’t original work.

the walls there are more of Geoff’s pictures collected from
his time working on magazines like Vogue, Elle, Red and
Glamour. And set against the back wall is a 1950s dresser from
Annie’s parents upon which is a wonderful collection of white
ceramics, from hand thrown precious items to Ikea. It works.
Upstairs, thanks to triple aspect windows the master
bedroom is wonderfully light. With off white walls on three
sides and a lovely shade of indigo patterned wallpaper on the
fourth – which picks up the blue tiles of the fireplace – it is a
very calm room. A wonderful feature is the light fitting, which
apart from new shades is completely original. It is somewhat
of a mystery as to why all the light fittings in the bedrooms
are by the windows rather than in the centre of the ceiling but
the most likely explanation is that it was a modesty thing. By
placing the lights in the windows, the Edwardians living in
these houses could move around inside their bedroom when
the lights were on without casting a shadow on the curtains.
The Warings knocked through one of the five
bedrooms of the original house to make a sunny en suite
bathroom decorated in neutral tones, with pale woodwork
shutters. Cleverly they made sure that all the basins,
baths, taps etc. were of the Edwardian period so you
really wouldn’t know this was a modern addition.

downstairs to the Spa and cosy
Garden Room where tranquil
music was playing. Emily asked
me about my skin care regime
so she could choose the best
facial for my sensitive skin,
which was the Outer Peace
Blemish Relief Facial. . She made sure I
was comfortable, then proceeded to
massage my face, neck and hands for
an hour, with beautiful creams and
exfoliators. It was complete bliss
and the time flew by too quickly.
After this, I was offered some delicious

whilst waiting to be collected for my blow-dry.
Ruby came to greet me and took me back
upstairs to the hair salon. It’s a spectacular
space, with a super modern and quirky feel. I
took a seat and we had a chat about the kind
of look I wanted – natural and bouncy. They
used Aveda Volumizing Tonic, which made my
hair look and feel absolutely fabulous and I
was even spoilt again with a hand and arm
massage whilst having my hair expertly styled.

a prolific hand washer
cleaning up after a one-year-old,
I really have noticed my hands suffering in recent
months. Hoping for a mini miracle, I pulled
up a chair at the sparkling Nailsinc counter that
has relocated from the periphery to the heart
of the beauty hall at Fenwick, Tunbridge Wells.
As the skin around my knuckles and joints has
taken a real beating, my therapist decided to
soften it with a massage using a layer of pure
coconut oil, rather than a perfumed product –
meaning no uncomfortable stinging, just soothing
moisturisation. Paying careful attention to ragged
cuticles and, to be perfectly honest, nails that I
had hacked at with clippers three days previously,
she carefully shaped and applied base, colour and
top coats of varnish (I opted for a juicy, deep
berry shade – Kensington High Street – a gel
effect polish). I didn’t think it would be possible
to salvage a presentable set of nails from what she
had to work with, but I was majorly impressed
with the end result – glossy, rounded nails which,
although short, feel and look pretty gorgeous.

I must be very
behind with beauty
processes these
days, as I had never heard of

The treatment used some beautiful
Eve Taylor products, as well as a delicate
rose water which smelt lovely and felt
calming and soothing on my skin.
The Facial Toning process began with special
Microcurrent Rollers, which were worked up
from my neck to my forehead. The impulses lift
and tone facial and neck muscles, improving skin
elasticity and reducing the appearance of lines and
wrinkles, as well as increasing the production of
collagen and elastin. A transparent gel mask filled
with collagen, hyaluronic acid and rose water was
then used, giving my skin a surge of moisture.
This, combined with the Microcurrent Rollers,
made for a really relaxing experience and the
results were pretty impressive. My skin felt and
looked fuller and firmer, so I can see why this is
referred to as the ‘red carpet beauty secret’! I would
love to go back and have a massage or calming
treatment, and would recommend the CACI
experience to anyone wanting a more youthful
appearance, without having to go under the knife.

back and I’ve since noticed the texture and
consistency of my hair has changed considerably.

Josephine Fairley explains how
to brighten silver locks
Certainly, as life landmarks go, the morning we notice
our first grey hair isn’t one that has most of us singing
hallelujah from the rooftops. But today, we can choose
to play up the silver fox style – and look fabulous. Or colour
it, and nobody (but our colourist) need ever know. However,
there’s no getting away from it: deciding which to opt for is
probably the biggest beauty conundrum we face, as we age.
And it isn’t as simple as just ‘letting it go’. That can
simply make you look washed-out and pale. According to
US-based haircolouring expert Louis Licari, “When hair
loses its colour, it loses its richness and lustre. And when
this happens it tends to make skin colour look faded.”
We can certainly all think of women who go grey gracefully
and look utterly chic. (Helen Mirren, anyone?) But, according
to überhairdresser Nicky Clarke, “they’re the exceptions. And
they tend to be fabulous, striking women who’d look great
whatever their hair colour.” Your skintone will determine how
good you’d look if you decide to stick with grey. The sallowskinned
rarely find a silver frame flattering – and nor do natural
redheads, whose hair tends to turn a pale apricot when white
mixes in. Classic silver-haired beauties tend
to cluster at either end of the hair spectrum:
women with almost ebony colouring, or pale
‘English rose’ complexions. If you don’t want
to fall into those categories – or you just don’t
want to go grey, period – then the good news is
that the fixes are more convincing than ever.
There are changes to the actual hair itself, as it
goes grey, though: it becomes wirier, often thicker
and more wayward and hard to control. According
to Chelsea-based Richard Ward (who most famously did the
Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding hair), “the texture and shape
can change; it might feel coarser, drier and grow in a different
pattern. So invest in a good quality shampoo, conditioner and
serum to help nourish hair and keep it smooth and glossy.”
Interestingly, actually covering up the grey restores not only
the colour and ‘rejuvenates’ the face – but actually makes hair
glossy again. “Grey hair absorbs the light and looks flat,” notes
Jo Hansford, who’s long been one of the UK’s wisest colour
experts. “Put back the colour and the light picks up on it and
automatically makes the hair appear healthier.” (Note: don’t
ever be tempted to pluck a grey hair. Pulling won’t kill it or

make it grow back with its old colour; plucking just distorts
the hair follicle, making regrowth more wiry and obvious.)
Whether you opt to stay grey or choose colour, a must is
to adapt your haircare regime. Notes Richard Ward: “Good
quality nourishing shampoos, conditioners and any products
which are colour-specific will help keep your colour looking
glossy and vibrant for longer. Also remember not to wash it
too much – this will help avoid fade.” For blondes, I don’t
think you can beat the John Frieda Sheer Blonde

want to stick with the grey – but don’t want it to ‘yellow’, like
your granny’s was prone to. Philip Kingsley Pure Silver Shampoo,

Meanwhile if you do opt to colour your hair, the golden rule is
not to stray too far from your natural (pre-grey) haircolour. Most
particularly, if colouring a whole head of grey, don’t go darker;
not only does it emphasise regrowth, but it can look opaque –
like you painted your head with shoe polish. In fact – a little
like having your brows shaped professionally and then doing the
maintenance yourself at home – I’d always recommend going
to a salon for an objective opinion about what would suit you.
If you opt for highlights, the chances are you’ll be locked into a
relationship with the haircolourist – though in my opinion (thank
you, Team John Frieda) the investment is worth every last penny.
I am constantly asked by strangers where I get my colour done.
However, if you’re covering up grey with a simple semipermanent
dye – do not EVER opt for permanent colour, until
you’re 100% rock-solid dead-certain about the shade – you may be
able to persuade the colourist to recommend a product for home
use. Or at least advise on what shade is best to look for, so that you
can maintain at home yourself. But one key piece of advice: when
it comes to explaining what you have in mind, a picture speaks
a thousand words. What’s ‘brown’ to you might mean anything
from milk chocolate to Green & Black’s 85%, to a colourist.
The great advance in recent years, meanwhile, has been
the launch of root touch-up products, which are a complete
godsend. They tend to be powder-based products which you
brush onto roots to keep you going till next you have time
for a haircolouring session (either at home or in-salon). Color
Wow Root Cover Up, £28.50, comes in a fantastic range of
shades from blonde to black (find it at victoriahealth.com), and
in my opinion can’t be beaten because it’s so easy to use.
My last best tip? If you’re having your hair salon-coloured, book
your next appointment when you pay for this one – and plan your
life around it. In my experience, it’s almost impossible to get lastminute
appointments with good hair colourists, and so if you leave
booking till you think you need it, you may find yourself wanting
to retreat under a paper bag or woolly hat, till you can bag a slot…
Bobbi Brown’s Grey Guidance
“When you go grey, more colourful make-up is
essential,” says Bobbi Brown. “Grey or white hair
drains colour from the face, so you need the lift of
make-up colour – soft shades, but not washed out.”

Bridging – for spine articulation, breath

1. Lie on your back with your knees bent
and your feet still flat on the floor.
2. Keeping your arms on the floor, and palms facing down,
gently lift your spine off the mat (or the floor) until
you’re holding your weight on your shoulder blades
and shoulders. Hips and knees should be aligned.
3. Inhale in this position, and, as you lower

4. Repeat this movement pattern 5-10 times,

allowing eyes, ribs and spine to follow.
4. Keeping your legs in the original position as much
as possible, continue to rotate as far as you can.
5. Exhale to return to the original position, initiating
the movement from the ribcage and the back.
6. Complete the same movement pattern on the
other side, and repeat this 4 times on each side.
Please note these exercises are not suitable for those with
spinal problems. Please consult your GP before doing

Roll down & walk out – Standing tall, begin by rolling
your body down through the spine one vertebra at a
time until you are able to start walking your hands
along the floor. Keep going until you end up in a
plank position (the clue is in the name here – don't
let your hips drop to the floor, think plank of wood).
Keep your tummy pulled into your spine and shoulders
directly over your wrists. Then slowly walk your hands
back towards your feet until you can roll back up to
standing. Repeat this five or six times to get warmed up.
Start to fire it up – Continue with the same exercise,
however, start to pick up the pace. When you arrive
in plank position take it into a pushup. Elbows stay
as close to the side of the body as possible as you
lower your chest to the floor. Exhale to push back up.
Take this movement onto your knees if you need to.
Then continue rolling back up to standing but this
time add a jump at the top. Repeat 10 – 15 times.
Mountain Climbers – It’s time to get that heart rate
up. On your last repetition of the above exercise stay
down in a plank. Then bring one knee at a time up
towards your chest gathering pace. It should feel like
running vertically up a mountain but be sure to keep
in a perfect straight line from shoulders to ankles
and tummy sucked in. Do this three times for 45
seconds each time being sure to rest in between.
Squats – A super simple yet super effective exercise.
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and your
weight in your heels (imagine lifting your toes up
to the ceiling). As if about to sit down, take your
bottom down towards the floor so that your legs are
at 90 degrees. Exhale to push back up. The biggest
secret to doing a squat correctly is to start squeezing
your bottom at the lowest point of the squat and
continue as you stand up. Repeat 20-25 times.
Plyometrics – Exactly as above but this time, rather than
just stand up, try and jump up from the squat position
and land softly back into the squat and repeat. Think
as if you’re trying to hit your head on the ceiling with
each jump. Use your arms for momentum. Plyometrics
(jumping) is a great way to get the heart rate up.
Isometric hold – On your final squat jump,
when you land try and hold the squat position
for 30 seconds then do little pulses up and
down for another 30 seconds to finish.

A new year brings new opportunities. Helen Barton gives us a few ideas on how to create a positive
atmosphere at home to take advantage of these endless possibilities
After a hectic couple of months, January is the perfect time to stop and reassess. Many begin their New Year
diet and exercise regime, to cleanse and invigorate the mind and body for the year ahead. Often, however, our
homes are forgotten about. The stressful emotions, rushing around, (possibly a couple of arguments?) and
piles of clutter build up in our houses as well as in our minds, and can eventually affect the atmosphere negatively.
The first, and most obvious step would be to have a thorough clear-out and dispose of accumulated and unnecessary
‘stuff’. To take this a step further, and to transform your home into a harmonious haven of ‘positive vibes only’, follow
these simple suggestions. These are particularly beneficial if you’ve moved into a new house or have a home office.
A good scrub – We know how wonderfully satisfying it
is when those kitchen counters and living room shelves
are clean and clear. By de-cluttering and giving surfaces a
dust, you’ll immediately feel brighter, and the rooms will
feel lighter. Clean the windows to let as much light in as
possible. Add a mirror to increase light levels even further.
Air flow – The air in a house can easily become stagnant,
especially at this time of year when the heating is on
full blast and everyone’s in hibernation mode. Open all
the windows, even if it’s really chilly, and create a draft
through the house. Shake out cushions and blankets and
get plenty of light and air flowing through the space.
Outside in – As well as adding life and vibrancy, house
plants hugely improve the air quality in a home, particularly
if you reside in a city with high levels of pollution. Spider
plants are one of the easiest to grow and maintain, and
remove formaldehyde and xylene from the atmosphere.
Snake plant, or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue gets rid of
benzene and trichloroethylene, and aloe vera is a great
option, doubling up as a natural ‘heal all’ balm.
Scent – Essential orange oil has a significant uplifting effect,
and by carefully burning incense, particularly frankincense,
you can easily create a peaceful, temple-like atmosphere.
The ancient Native American practice of smudging has been
used for thousands of years to clear negative energy from
a space. A smudge stick is a small bundle of sage, knotted
together with string. Open the doors in your home, place
the sage in a bowl and light it with a match. After carefully
blowing out the flame, allow the herbs to smoke and
smoulder gently, slowly filling the house with its aromas.
Colour – Colour can have a significant effect on emotion.
Yellow has associations with hope, happiness, positivity
and clarity, so by painting a wall, or hanging up a work
of art, you can create your very own super vibrant vibes.
Alternatively, rich and earthy tones, when used in the
bedroom, can create a relaxing sense of cocooning.
By taking just a little time to consider and reenergise
your surroundings, you can create a
wonderful, peaceful and calming atmosphere for
your whole family or partner to benefit from.

Pineapple Paleo pudding
This is a healthy, vegan version of rice or semolina pudding.
Chia seeds are packed with omega-3 oil and other nutrients,
so are worth a try, especially in a sweet pudding. The end
result does look a bit like miniature frogspawn, I admit, but
I promise you that it is very tasty.
Serves 4
• 5 tbsp chia seeds
• 1 can coconut milk
• 1 tsp vanilla essence
• 1 level tbsp sugar
(optional)
• ½ a pineapple
• 1 mango
• 3 passion fruit
1. Mix coconut milk (warm slightly to melt solid part if
needed), vanilla essence and chia seeds together. Stir in
a little sugar to taste, then pour into ramekins or small
bowls and leave to set for at least 3 hours (or overnight).
Slice pineapple into strips (sprinkle with a little sugar if
desired) and griddle (or grill) for 5 minutes until slightly
caramelised.
2. Make the mango and passionfruit sauce by mashing the
mango and passion fruit together and sieving to make a
smooth sauce. Place pineapple on top of the coconut chia,
pour on some sauce and serve.

Ginger chicken courgetti noodles
This stir-fry uses spiralized courgettes instead of noodles
(obtainable at the supermarket – no spiralizer required), so
is stodge (and gluten) free. Courgettes and chicken combine
well with the other health-giving ingredients for a clean and
bright light lunch or supper.
Serves 4
• 4 small chicken breasts,
cut into strips
• 1 red onion, sliced
• 1 lime juice & zest
• 1-2 small red chilies
(according to taste)
• 1 orange or red pepper,
sliced
• 1 tbsp soy sauce
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 small bunch coriander,
roughly chopped, saving
some whole leaves for
garnishing
• around 400-500g
courgetti
For the marinade
• 2 tsp lime juice
• 2-3 cloves garlic, finely
minced/grated
• 3cm chunk of ginger,
finely grated
• 2 tsp sugar
1. Place the strips of chicken in a bowl and add marinade
ingredients. Leave, covered in the fridge, for at least an
hour.
2. The trick with stir-fry is not to overcook the vegetables,
so fry the marinaded chicken separately for around 10
minutes first, as this must be well cooked. Once the
chicken is cooked, put a pan of water on the hob and
steam the courgetti for around 3 minutes. Add the
other stir-fry ingredients to the chicken, and fry for 2-3
minutes (i.e. not long). Pile courgetti into bowls and
place chicken stir-fry on top. Garnish with coriander and
serve.
NB: If you’re still in the depths of Christmas leftovers, you
can use turkey instead of chicken in this dish.

Gardening Resolutions
Jo Arnell advises us on taking positive steps in the garden for the year ahead.
Here we go again – out with
the old and in with the new
and all the happy resolutions
are sitting there looking shiny and
achievable. Hopes are high and all
is ‘plans and perusing’. I’ve been
looking out of the window and have
to confess that my own resolutions
are a bit tedious: 1. finish projects
before starting others, 2. label seeds
and cuttings, and 3. don’t make piles
of things. I’m hoping that you don’t
have my bad habits, so I’ve chosen a
few more that might help to make a
difference, not just to the look of the
garden itself, but also to the experience
of being in the garden. Here goes:
1. Plant a tree
Anyone with a garden will have room
for a tree. Not a giant Redwood,
or anything too close to the house
that will clog the drains and lift the
foundations, but something that will
give height and interest all through
the year. There are plenty of beautiful
small trees for smaller gardens, or even
for within borders. I’m a bit mean
when it comes to choosing trees and
shrubs, especially if they’re going to
be focal points. After all, if they’ve
been invited to be the star attraction,
they ought to provide at least two
seasons of interest. So look out for trees
that will have good foliage, blossom,
fruit and a handsome overall shape.
Too much to ask? I don’t think so.
2. Add more structure
to your borders
This is a great time of the year for
focusing critically on the borders,
without the distraction of the flowers
and foliage. If it’s all looking dismal
and bare, think about adding some
plants for winter interest. These can
be evergreen, or have interesting bark,
an elegant form, or an anchoring
feature of some kind. Try to make sure
that plants that come into their own
during the winter either fade into the
background once they’ve done their
thing, become a foil for other plants,
or, best of all, will bring another point
of seasonal interest later in the year.
3. Learn how to prune
If you’re adding structure, you will
find that no matter how well behaved
the plant is, unless it dies or is made
of plastic, it will need pruning at some
point. Knowing when to prune each
plant and by how much is a subject
that fills many books (containing
impenetrable diagrams that bear no
resemblance to your plants). So, in a
couple of sentences: prune evergreens
during the spring and summer when
all danger of frost is past. Prune earlyflowering
deciduous shrubs after they’ve
flowered and late-flowering shrubs
(Buddleia etc), in the early spring. For
the health of the plant, cut out dead,
damaged and diseased wood first and
then aim for a pleasing goblet shape.
Branches shouldn’t cross or grow
inwards, as a more open structure allows
air to circulate. Stand back often and
look at the overall shape, as if you’re
a hairdresser, but try not to ‘hedge’
about trimming little pieces off, as this
can make the situation worse. Got all
that? Fortunately GBH to plants does
not carry a prison sentence – yet.
4. Catch problems early
If you make a habit of going into the
garden on a daily basis you stand a
better chance of catching the first
greenfly as it alights and the first slug
that dares to slide into view. If possible,
incorporate it into your daily routine
and take a companion – or, better, a
cup of tea or a glass of something as you
walk round. You’ll soon start spotting
a few weeds and the odd pesky. Pull
them up or pick them off as you go and
you might just stay on top of them…
5. Grow more edibles
Some crops might not work, your
vegetables might not look as perfect as
they do in the shops, but they will taste
better and you’ll have the satisfaction
of having grown them yourself. That
first year will be a great adventure –
and it will take about that long for
all the pests to find you – after that,
growing your own can become more
of a battle. If you have been growing
vegetables for a while and have been
beset by pests/diseases/soil problems,
work out which crops have suffered and
then just grow a few of the easy-going
ones that won’t need too much TLC:
salads, beans, tomatoes and courgettes
should provide bumper harvests of
summer crops. Add in a few leeks and
spinach or kale and the winter will
be covered without much fuss, too.

Education
Susan Elkin looks at the way reading is taught in schools and at home
There’s a great deal more to teaching reading, than – well –
teaching reading. Far too many schools, teachers and even
parents get so hung up on deciphering squiggles, worrying
about phonics with all its esoteric graphemes and phonemes,
‘sounding out’ and all the rest of it that they forget that this
mechanical stage is the beginning and not the end of the process.
The real purpose of teaching reading is to develop competent,
fluent, ‘deep end’ readers with enough stamina to immerse themselves
effortlessly in print for a sustained length of time. And this, in my
experience, is where many children hit the buffers. They can tell you
what the squiggles ‘say’ but they fail to develop into Real Readers.
My contention then, has long been, that encouraging reading
matters much more than ‘teaching’ it. And most schools – and
parents – could, in my view do far more to make Real Reading
a normal part of everyday activity than they currently do.
Children need to see adults buried in books (or reading books on
tablets). Otherwise they get the message that reading is a ‘do as I say
but not as I do’ childish thing and soon stop doing it. And the early
teens is the most vulnerable moment for this – they want desperately
to be cool and grown up and (as they see it) adults don’t read do they?
Role modelling is an immensely powerful, often undervalued
teaching tool. Every school should have a block of time every day
when everyone – including all the adults – reads silently. It used to
be called USSR (uninterrupted sustained silent reading) or ERIC
(everyone reads in class) and there is nothing like enough of it now.
At home, parents – especially male adults – need to be seen
reading too. Otherwise boys get the impression that reading is
a ‘girly’ thing which self respecting men don’t bother with.
Some schools use reward schemes such as Renaissance
Reading which sets levels and provides quizzes on books read.
Sponsored reading marathons can work quite well so can
projects such as a Book Week in which almost all the time is
related to book events such as author visits, telling each other
about favourite books and lots of extra reading time.
At home, for most of us, it’s probably a case of less TV and
more quiet time. And it’s not hard to switch it on when there’s
something you or your children really want to watch. And we
still – despite some closures in some areas – have many fabulous
public libraries. They need to be part of every child’s experience
almost from birth because they help to normalise the reading habit.
Don’t reject Kindles or similar reading devices either. They make
access to books easy and work well even for quite young children.
Let’s teach them to Read rather than allowing them to infer
that applying phonics is the be-all and end-all of reading.

Technology in Schools
Just how much screen time for children is too much? And how can we keep up to date with the
fast-changing world of technology in schools? Surrey Homes asks two head teachers for their views

What range of technologies do your students have
access to in the classroom on a daily basis?
There is so much scope in computing and we, in the
computing & ICT department have focused on making
our lessons fun and informative. We use both hardware and
software to achieve this. We have used Lego in our lessons
from Key Stage 3 right up to Sixth Form. We find that
students can’t resist playing around trying to make things
work. We also run a good range of free IT based Extra
Curricular clubs such as Minecraft and also participate in
the annual Lego League Competition. We use hardware
such as Raspberry Pis (a fun way to learn about complex
programming such as the python language), LEDs, buttons
and sound to create different systems. We were also part
of the BBC Microbit initiative and continue to use this
online resource in our Key Stage 3 lessons. Music, photos
and video are also a part of our lessons and we are looking
forward to incorporating 3D design into the curriculum
later this year and using the school’s 3D printer.
How do you keep up to date with the fastchanging
technology world?
At Battle Abbey School, the Computing & ICT department
has always been full of innovative thinkers who regularly
achieve outstanding results. We have eagerly incorporated
a range of exciting tasks into our lessons to comply with
the new Government initiative for computing in schools.
This year in our Key Stage 3 lessons we have incorporated
elements of Computing and ICT into their practical
lessons. We have also added a theory element where
they learn about the history of computers, binary and
algorithms. We regularly incorporate the ‘hour of code’
into our KS3 lessons which is another fun initiative and
we offer a useful introduction to programming. Our
Computing teachers participate in regular training courses
and a number of them are examiners which means they
are right up to date with what examiners expect.
We have been lucky to be part of a number of projects,
too. In 2015 a group of Battle Abbey students were involved
in a Google Rise project call Arrastre where ‘computing
and dance collide!’ The dance department were also
involved and we worked with the leader of the project,
Genevieve Smith-Nunes. The students involved learnt
about wearable technology and how it is programmed,
and this is something we have incorporated into GCSE
Computing lessons. Genevieve has recently approached
the school with another exciting project which we hope
to start working on in the coming year. We have many
interesting speakers from various business and technology
backgrounds visiting the school as part of our careers
schedule and plan to have even more speakers next year.

We value combining more traditional teaching methods
with new innovations to ensure that we give our pupils
experience of relevant technologies and how they
can be used. In addition to two age-appropriate ICT
suites, our teachers and pupils have access to interactive
whiteboards, bringing the curriculum to life, and a
bank of iPads which are used across all subjects.

What effect has social media had on
students’ relationships and behaviour?
At Battle Abbey we take E-Safety very seriously and
it is incorporated into lessons across the curriculum.
In all computing lessons we dedicate a term to
learning about E-Safety and how pupils should
interact with social media. We also participate in
the nationwide Safer Internet Day in February.
How has technology been incorporated into
the curriculum, other than ICT lessons?
We enjoy the juxtaposition of occupying such a historical
location and providing our pupils with the cutting edge
technology that they and their families would expect
from an independent education. A great many subjects
incorporate technology into the classrooms, perhaps
most notably science where not only do iPads and hand
held devices help pupils access the curriculum, but allow
pupils to work collaboratively on projects via the school’s
wireless network. We are very conscious of pupils’ often
very specific individual learning needs and technology
can be a huge enabler in terms of synergy with each of
their learning styles. Our campus is fully covered by a
wireless network (even though the thick Abbey walls
do their best to make this as difficult as possible!).
How do you control the use of mobile
phones within school hours?
The advent of modern phone technology has made this
increasingly difficult to enforce. The school’s wireless system
is fitted with a FortiGate filter unit, but pupils will always
be able to access 3G via their smart phones if they so choose.
However, pupils in KS3 have their phones routinely collected
in morning registration and they are kept under lock and key
for the duration of the school day. For older pupils, phones
are not allowed to be used at break time or in lessons unless
expressly permitted by a teacher. Our focus is on education as
a form of prevention and this, allied with the school’s robust
policy on the matter, has meant that transgressions are few
and far between and effectively dealt with if they do occur.

How do you keep up to date with the fastchanging
technology world?
Technologies are consistently changing and improving. As
a school we utilise specialists and our staff to investigate
the best ICT practice for each area of the school. Staff are
regularly trained and visit technology conferences, such
as BETT, to support their ongoing development. We are
not swayed by fads, but carefully consider what is the most
appropriate and educationally beneficial technology.
How has technology been incorporated into
the curriculum, other than ICT lessons?
Across the curriculum, subject heads are encouraged
to engage with ICT as part of their planning
process. Staff also share ideas within regular curriculum
meetings. Recent examples include creating eBooks, video
editing, presentations, spreadsheets and even coding.
‘Minecraft’ has also been introduced as a club and is
often used as a teaching resource where appropriate.
What effect has social media had on
students’ relationships and behaviour?
As a prep school, many of the children are not yet engaged in
social media. However, with an ethos where each cares for all,
we believe in preparing them to use social media, computers
and mobile phones responsibly. Our school community is
very supportive and we work with families to inform and
equip their children to use technology in a balanced and
safe way that maintains respect for themselves and others.

Fables from the Farm
Jane takes a look behind the scenes at Stonegate Cheese Dairy
Oh blimey, another New Year
to contend with and a host
of resolutions to conjure up.
I’ve long since realised the futility of the
lose weight / drink less / exercise more
school of personal resolutions but hold
out far more hope of delivering on those
that involve improvements on the farm.
And this year I’m determined to make
a few changes in the pig department.
Resolution No 1 – be a little more
aware of the promiscuity of teenage pigs.
At the moment we keep our sows –
Sybil the Saddleback, Alison
the Oxford Sandy & Black
and Joan the Tamworth
in a separate wood. Each
will be pregnant for four
months, at different times,
to ensure a constant flow
of piglets (though that,
too, is another area for
improvement). They keep their piglets
for about eight weeks and shortly after
weaning come back into season. Douglas
the Duroc boar then visits and, hey
presto, it all starts again. Very organised.
Sadly what follows next is less so.
On leaving Mum, the weaners get
released into a 20 acre wood where
they grow on with all the others until
they are ready to go ‘up the road’ (a
less brutal explanation of the journey
to become sausages) at about seven
months. Technically the girls shouldn’t

come into season before then, but
there’s always one and with 20 acres
to play in, all sorts of shenanigans
go on with inevitable results! So this
year I’m going to be a killjoy and
have a girls’ wood and a boys’ wood.
That should put an end to that!
Resolution No 2 – don’t get soaked
every morning. I wrote last year how
the Stonegate Cheese Dairy had decided
that the only way to guarantee the
welfare of the cows supplying their milk
was to buy their own herd – and so they
did. Now, every other day
Guy the farmer delivers
2,000 litres of whole milk
for them to turn into
their wonderful cheeses.
What I hadn’t
appreciated is that cheese
is made from the curd,
which is only about
25% of the volume of the milk and the
rest, the whey, is a waste product that
has to be taken away at quite a cost.
Traditionally this was always fed to pigs
and, as a zealous waste-not want-not
campaigner, I eagerly agreed to collect
some of the whey for Sybil, Alison,
Joan and their growing offspring.
All well and good, but the logistics are
quite daunting. How to transport 500
litres of liquid, three times a week, one
mile from Stonegate Cheese Dairy to
Coopers Farm and then across two fields
to the pig wood? Hmmm. The obvious
solution would have been a bowser but
locally eBay was not forthcoming and
I wasn’t going to drive to Pontefract
and back just for a bowser. Instead I
picked up a batch of 20-litre plastic
containers for nothing, shoved them in
the back of the Land Rover and set off.
It all works well, apart from the final
stage which involves actually pouring
the stuff into the troughs in the wood.
The pigs absolutely love the whey
and, not content with just slurping it
up, they submerge their heads in the
trough and then, coming up for air,
give an almighty shake which showers
me – still emptying the containers.
They do reckon it’s very good for the
skin but you can see why Miss Muppet
here thinks there might be room for
improvements in 2017.
