Snow and cold temperatures caused
nearly every sporting event in N’West
Iowa to be postponed last Friday evening.
Not having to rush out the door to get
to our two high school
kids’ games meant I
stayed at work late to
finish a few piles on
my desk.
My kind and
thoughtful husband,
working late as well
and knowing that my
car doesn’t handle
snow and ice well,
volunteered to switch
vehicles with me for
our drive home, which
is just a trip across town.

Without bothering to let the engine warm
up, I hopped in, hit the seat warmer button,
backed out of the parking lot and headed
for the highway. The snow was light and
fluffy and quickly blew off the front hood
— right onto the windshield. A quick swish
of the wipers cleared the window so visibility
was restored — for a moment. The cold
of the snow caused my window to frost over
on the inside, and despite immediately hitting
the defrost to high, I still had to lower
the driver-side window and stick my head
out to see the middle of the road.
I didn’t want to make a right-hand turn,
since I couldn’t see out that side, so I had to
travel another three blocks to the first available
option for a left turn. That put me in
the desolate parking lot of a small shopping
place, where I stayed put until the defrost
started to work its magic on the windshield.
By the time I got home my husband was
already in the garage with my car, the one
that doesn’t handle ice and snow very well,

Round Lake Vineyards and Winery
are inviting friends to join them
for a New Year’s Eve celebration.
On Saturday night, Dec. 31, the
vineyard will be open from noon until
12:30 a.m. so people can come all
day to enjoy some wine, but the party
doesn’t get started until 7 p.m.
“The party is going to start at 7
p.m. with appetizers and then we’ll
have a deejay from 8 p.m. until 12:30
a.m,” said Heidi Petersen, an account
manager with Round Lake Vineyards
and Winery. “We’re going to have the
dance last past midnight so we can
say ‘Happy New Year’ and then have
another dance.”
The idea to host a New Year’s Eve
party actually came from some of the
winery’s customers and friends.
“We have friends that kind of threw
it out as an idea,” Petersen said. “We
thought it would be something fun to
do. We like to have people and we like
to have fun.”
When they thought about it, hosting
a New Year’s Eve party at a winery
was a perfect idea.
“Wine is perfect for a New Year’s Eve
party — it’s a fun celebratory drink
and we thought hosting a party would
be a wonderful idea,” Petersen said.
The party will take place in the facility’s
largest reception space — the
cellar. There is no charge for the event,
except the wine you choose to drink,
and people can come and go as they
please. The event organizers just ask
that if you are coming with a group of
10 or more then call ahead to make a
reservation just so they have tables set
and such.
“I just can’t wait for the night and I
think I’m most looking forward to the
dancing and seeing everybody having
a great time,” Petersen said. F

An evening of fun
Little Swan Lake Winery hosts year-end celebration
Live music, great food, fine wine.
Little Swan Lake Winery will have
it all for guests on New Year’s Eve.
The doors will open at 7 p.m. when
owner Diane Benjamin encourages
guests to get set up for the night and
get ready to party. Music from the Kris
Karr Band getting started at 8 p.m. and
roll on until midnight.
“There are five of them mostly out
of Fort Dodge, we’ve had the, before
but not on New Year’s Eve,” Benjamin
said. “They do a lot of rock ’n’ roll,
folk rock and stuff that most people
don’t play, some old and cool songs.
They are great harmonizers and great
musicians.”
To go along with the live music
there will be a bison rib meal and a
vegetarian option, champagne at midnight,
as well as plenty of party favors
and door prizes.
The cost is $40 per person not including
wine.
“Our new year’s event does a pretty
good crowd and I think it’s a way to
wind down from our season,” Benjamin
said. “It’s a fun end to the year
and a really fun night with lots of
good music and good food.”
The winery will only be open on
weekends with Sunday entertainment
the rest of the winter.
If guests haven’t been to Little Swan
Lake Winery for awhile they will also
get a chance to sip a few new vintages
made for the first time this year.
“We try to do a couple new ones
each year and this year we did four,”
Benjamin said. “I think we’re up to 37
wines now and they’re all good, it’s
hard to know where to stop.”
The new wines include a moscato,
pino grigio, aglianico and a German
varietal.
“They’re about gone already which
is a good problem to have,” Benjamin
said. “They’ve been good sellers so
we’ll probably bring them all back.”
Before thinking about what wines
will be made next year though, it’s
time to celebrate the year that’s coming
to a close.

Sparkle Celebration
set for Calico Skies
“Sparkle” has taken on a whole
new meaning this year at Calico
Skies Vineyard and Winery
in rural Inwood.
It is the sixth year they have hosted
their New Year’s Eve Sparkle Celebration.
But it is also the very first year
they’ve had sparkling wine on their
menu. Sparkling wine they made
themselves.
“That’s the big thing this year, our
first year with our own sparkling
wine,” owner and winemaker Will
Kimberley said. “It’s a big deal for us
and will be a big part of the evening.”
The idea of making sparkling wine
is something Kimberley said he’s contemplated
for quite awhile.
“I’ve been wanting to do it for quite
a few years and got kind of obsessed
with it,” Kimberley said. “It’s complicated
and takes a lot laborwise, but
now we’re one of the few places in
the Midwest that does their own and
they’re all popular and selling well.
It’s been really fun.”
Guests for New Year’s Eve will get
to taste the fruits of that labor as four
sparkling wines will be paired with a
four-course dinner prepared by Chef
Daniel with Elite Catering of Sioux
Falls.
“We’ve had them for our wine club
and they prepare extremely impressive
and creative, high-qualify stuff,”
Kimberley said. “There will be the
sparkling wine pairing with each
course. They all go great with food so
we’re really excited about that.”
The Sparkle Celebration begins at 7
p.m. with the meal at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $90 per person and reservations
are required.
“It’s the best New Year’s Eve celebration
anywhere around. Certainly the
most unique I think,” Kimberley said.
The Risky Business Band will entertain
guests from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.
There will also be a s’mores bar and
photo booth set up throughout the
evening.
“Risky Business is a familiar crowd
favorite and provides a lot of fun for
everyone. People will want to get out
and dance,” Kimberley said.
As the clock counts down to midnight
Calico Skies unveils its very own
ball drop lowered down from the ceiling
as the final seconds of 2016 tick
away.
“It’s a blast. We provide each table
with confetti and party poppers. There
is a good inch coating on all surfaces
by the end of the night,” Kimberley
said. “It’s quite an amazing scene and
great atmosphere.
A night of revelry can work up an
appetite, even if that night starts with
the great meal, so Jimmy Johns sandwiches
are brought in for everyone at
12;30 a.m.

A night for nonsense
Worthington to host New Year’s Eve entertainment
New Year’s Eve is a night to celebrate,
but sometimes it’s hard
to find entertainment that the
whole family will enjoy.
The Worthington Memorial Performing
Arts Center has plans to
change that this year.
On Saturday, Dec. 31, at 7 p.m.,
they’ll be hosting a New Year’s Eve of
Serious Nonsense.
“We decided that we wanted to do
something that would kick off the
new year with fun and frivolity and
laughter, but that was still something
that was for all ages,” said Tammy
Makram, the managing director of
the Memorial Auditorium Performing
Arts Center.
“So if a whole family wants to come
and celebrate the new year then they
can all come together to this show.”
The show features Lloyd Brant and
Rosie Cole as the Theatre of Fools.
It will be their first time performing
at the Memorial Auditorium, and
Makram can’t wait.
“I’ve heard their show described as
Cirque du Soleil meets ‘Laurel and
Hardy.’ They are a kind of combination
of a Vaudeville circus act with the
silliness of Laurel and Hardy and The
Three Stooges,” Makram said.
“There’s also some music and some
magic in there and a bunch of random
silliness.”
Brant and Cole have been touring
and sharing their unique form of
humor with audiences for 25 years.
They have performed at a number of
venues including the Guthrie Theatre
and Disneyland.
Makra first saw the duo performing
at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.
“They are one of the most popular
shows there and I was watching the
audience’s reaction to them and people
were laughing so hard they were
falling out of their seats,” Makram
said.
“The funny thing is even though
they don’t say a word, you get so
caught up in the show that it doesn’t
matter. You understand exactly what
is going on with them.”
The show will kick off at 7 p.m., but
there will be a social hour before the
show starts complete with some sort
of live entertainment in the lobby.
Ringing in the New Year with laughter
and a reminder of life’s more important
things, Makram believes will
be a great way to spend New Year’s Eve.
“Their show is about love and silliness
and a reminder of the positive
things in life, which is what we all
need some of,” Makram said. F

Calling all brides
Bridal and Party Showcase set
for Sunday, Jan. 8, in Spencer
When it comes to brides who are planning weddings in N’West Iowa, the organizers of
the annual Bridal and Party Showcase have one thing to say: Come one and come all.
For the 11th year, MORE 104.9 is hosting its annual vendor fair on Sunday, Jan. 8,
2017, from 1-4:30 p.m. at the Clay County Regional Event Center. While this is mainly for
people planning their wedding in N’West Iowa, this year they are expanding the experience to
include anyone who is throwing a party.
“This year, we changed up the name a bit to the Bridal and Party showcase. The bridal aspect
continues to grow and grow, but we know that there
are lots of people who like to have parties or different
events or celebrations such as a birthday party or
an anniversary party,” said Kevin Tlam, operations
manager at MORE 104.9. “This event will give those
people a chance to plan their event by being able to
talk to venues, deejays, caterers and so much more.”
While they are now marketing the event to a new
crowd, they are still giving the brides a lot of the
focus.
“It’s a really fun event that we do every year and
it’s one of my favorites,” Tlam said. “It’s fun to
watch future brides and their moms and friends and
sometimes grooms begin that planning process for
what is going to be the biggest day of their lives. We
work really hard to bring in professionals and businesses
that can help them make their wedding days
extraordinary.”

of vendors from the N’West Iowa area and so far they have well over 40 vendors
who have signed up for the event. According to Tlam, there are even
more who haven’t officially signed up yet, but have said they are coming.
This is even a larger number of vendors then they had for the event’s
10th anniversary last year.
In addition to being able to check out a number of vendors, brides
and their parties as well as all other guests for the show will also get a
chance to win a number of prizes.
“Throughout the afternoon we’ll be drawing names for
prizes. All the vendors will be putting up prizes to
be given away,” Tlam said. “Anytime you go to a
wedding reception you do that dollar dance
and that is a tradition that we’ve incorporated
into our event. We have the cash
cube. Three times throughout the event,
people will have a chance to grab as
much cash as they can in 40 seconds.”
