Torchlight Procession

What It’s All About 

The opening event of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 

is the spectacular Torchlight Procession. Last 

year we welcomed over 40,000 people to this 

world renowned family event. Join thousands 

of torch carriers as they illuminate the city 

before enjoying a breath-taking finale. 

What To Expect 

Carry a torch for Unicef at the Torchlight 

Procession and help to create a river of 

fire through Edinburgh’s city centre led 

by Shetland's Up Helly Aa Vikings – we 

recommend one torch to a group of up to four. 

Two finale arenas: On the Hill - witness the 

lighting of the bonfire followed by a stunning 

sound & light show and fireworks finale. On 

the Street – enjoy fire elements, music and 

fireworks finale. Fireworks are visible from 

multiple vantage points across the city. 

You MUST have a torch and/or wristbands to 

take part in this year’s Torchlight Procession.

IMPORTANT INFO 

Torchlight Procession is an outdoor event using 

wax-based torches, please dress appropriately 

You will need to purchase at least one torch per 

group. Each torch comes with one procession 

wristband which the torch bearer MUST wear. If 

there is more than one person in your group, you 

will need to purchase additional wristbands to take 

part in the Procession. We recommend one torch to 

a group of up to four 

Torchlight Procession is an incredibly safe event but 

we need participants help to maintain this. Please 

follow all safety instructions when carrying torches 

Torches are wax based (like a big candle), safety 

guards are supplied to protect carrier hands from 

dripping wax

Please note, when windy the wax from the

Spectators to the event are welcome but please 

DO NOT join the procession en-route or stand

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival, 

including the Street Party since it 

began in 1993. Our team’s priority is 

to make it a night to remember for 

all the right reasons. G4S personnel 

are responsible for entrances, 

thoroughfares and exits to help you 

enter, walk around the site easily and 

safely, and help you leave by the 

most appropriate route. We check 

you have a ticket and wristband 

to manage the number of people 

entering the Street Party arena and to 

create a place suitable for everyone to 

enjoy the festivities. If we can’t let you 

in because you’ve had too much to 

drink, remember this is for your own 

safety, not because we want to spoil 

your fun. Lookout for us, the yellow 

jackets worn by our staff are ‘highly 

visible’ and we will do everything we

Ye”, this is Henderson’s life told 

by those who knew and loved 

him most. 

A headstrong, rather proud woman 

(Wendy Hiller) travels by train and 

ferry to the Hebrides to marry her 

wealthy fiancé. Along the way, she 

falls under the spell of the Scottish 

landscape, and encounters another 

man (Roger Livesey), with whom she 

falls suddenly in love. With odd, 

dreamlike interludes, symbolism, 

sense of the supernatural and 

romance it is a work of real and 

enduring genius.

FREE HOGMANAY 

TRAM SERVICES 

Edinburgh Trams and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 

will be providing FREE services throughout 

the night after the Street Party to help you 

home after the bells. 

The free late night trams will run from midnight on 

Saturday 31 December until 5am on Sunday 1 January 

and help thousands of revellers home safely. The 

service will run every 20 minutes between West End 

Princes Street and Edinburgh Airport, with all trams 

calling at Ingliston Park and Ride for drivers wishing to 

make the most of the free parking facilities. In addition 

to these extra free services, Edinburgh Trams staff will 

be present at the main stops and on board to help you 

travel home safely. 

Trams run a frequent 

service 7 days a week 

from Edinburgh Airport 

to the City centre. Free 

car parking is available at 

Ingliston Park & Ride site 

and then tram connects with 

rail services at Edinburgh 

Park and Haymarket with 

St Andrew Square stop 

close to Waverley Station.
