edinburgh’s hogmanay has joined
with unicef to help children in danger
Son et Lumiere on Calton Hill. Part of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations
Many thousands of Syria’s
children have lost their family,
their home and school in a brutal
war. Children have fled their
homes with nothing.
Many have made terrifying
journeys alone, been hurt and
seen family killed. And now winter
is here. They need someone to
keep them safe and warm.
Just £3 could help buy a thermal blanket for a child this winter.
EventScotland is proud to support Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. Scotland is the perfect
stage for events and its cultural scene is as legendary as its crowd.
What It’s All About
The opening event of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay
is the spectacular Torchlight Procession. Last
year we welcomed over 40,000 people to this
world renowned family event. Join thousands
of torch carriers as they illuminate the city
before enjoying a breath-taking finale.
What To Expect
Carry a torch for Unicef at the Torchlight
Procession and help to create a river of
fire through Edinburgh’s city centre led
by Shetland's Up Helly Aa Vikings – we
recommend one torch to a group of up to four.
Two finale arenas: On the Hill - witness the
lighting of the bonfire followed by a stunning
sound & light show and fireworks finale. On
the Street – enjoy fire elements, music and
fireworks finale. Fireworks are visible from
multiple vantage points across the city.
You MUST have a torch and/or wristbands to
take part in this year’s Torchlight Procession.
Official Charity
IMPORTANT INFO
Torchlight Procession is an outdoor event using
wax-based torches, please dress appropriately
You will need to purchase at least one torch per
group. Each torch comes with one procession
wristband which the torch bearer MUST wear. If
there is more than one person in your group, you
will need to purchase additional wristbands to take
part in the Procession. We recommend one torch to
a group of up to four
Torchlight Procession is an incredibly safe event but
we need participants help to maintain this. Please
follow all safety instructions when carrying torches
Torches are wax based (like a big candle), safety
guards are supplied to protect carrier hands from
dripping wax
carry torches if wearing delicate fabrics
Torch vouchers can be exchanged for torches
at the event
Spectators to the event are welcome but please
Where do you begin to
tell the story of Scotland?
30 DEC
Tales of a Grandson is one
man’s re-telling of Scotland’s
history - but this is no straight
and dusty history lesson: To tell
this epic tale Andy Cannon takes
us on a time travelling adventure
with his grandparents
through Scotland’s past to
piece together the myriad
of Kings, Queens, friends
and foes that make up our
nation’s story (and discovers
new evidence about Nessie
along the way!). Suitable for
7 and over.
Every Woman is co-commissioned by Edinburgh Art Festival and 14-18 NOW: WW1 Centenary Art Commissions with support from Scottish Government, Creative Scotland, City of Edinburgh
Council, The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, Forth Ports, Sherwin-Williams, the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and by the Department for Culture Media and Sport.

EDINBURGH’S HOGMANAY 2016/17
FOR
YOUR
OWN
SAFETY
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay events
are enormously popular,
always attract great crowds
and are also incredibly safe.
We have stewards and medical
officers at all events to assist
you but please remember, you
can also do your bit to make
sure we all have a happy and
safe New Year.
ON THE NIGHT
Do pick your spot early to enjoy the Midnight Moment
Do look after your friends and arrange meeting points
in case you become separated
Do think about how you will get home
Do let a police officer or steward know if you see
anything suspicious
Do listen out for announcements and
follow any instructions given – they are
for your benefit
Do get to know where the emergency services
are stationed. First aiders are located
throughout the arena, please ask one of our
stewards if you require medical assistance
G4S EVENT STEWARDS:
We're Here to Assist You!
G4S EVENTS has been supplying
security and stewarding to
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival,
including the Street Party since it
began in 1993. Our team’s priority is
to make it a night to remember for
all the right reasons. G4S personnel
are responsible for entrances,
thoroughfares and exits to help you
enter, walk around the site easily and
safely, and help you leave by the
most appropriate route. We check
you have a ticket and wristband
to manage the number of people
entering the Street Party arena and to
create a place suitable for everyone to
enjoy the festivities. If we can’t let you
in because you’ve had too much to
drink, remember this is for your own
safety, not because we want to spoil
your fun. Lookout for us, the yellow
jackets worn by our staff are ‘highly
visible’ and we will do everything we
can to assist you. We want you to be
safe and enjoy yourselves and will do
our best to answer your questions,
help you out if you have a problem or
point you in the right direction if you
get lost. See you on the 31st.
A bittersweet comedy which proves
Made entirely of archive film, this
A journey into our past, it explores
discovers he is not like other men,
adaptation of the classic Scottish
novel. Chris Guthrie (Agyness Deyn)
is an intelligent young woman
landscape. She and her brother
dream of escape – possibilities
for which suddenly present
What We Did on Our
Holiday (12A)
WED 28 DEC 1.55PM / SAT 31 DEC 11.05AM
In this uplifting tale, Doug (David
Tennant) and Abi (Rosamund Pike)
travel to the Highlands with their
three kids for Doug’s father Gordie’s
(Billy Connolly) birthday. It soon
becomes clear that when it comes
Sylvain Chomet’s beautiful
animation is a truly magical piece
of cinema. Our weary hero is a
magician who treks from Paris, to
the Western Isles, to Edinburgh –
acquiring, along the way, a young
travelling companion who sincerely
believes in his magical abilities.
Bittersweet and timeless - perfect
Hogmanay viewing.
Hamish Henderson was a
colossal figure in Scottish
culture, whose poems continue
to elevate and inspire. From
an English orphanage and
the corridors of Cambridge,
to overseeing the Italian
capitulation in WWII and
penning “Freedom Come Aa’
Ye”, this is Henderson’s life told
by those who knew and loved
him most.
A headstrong, rather proud woman
(Wendy Hiller) travels by train and
ferry to the Hebrides to marry her
wealthy fiancé. Along the way, she
falls under the spell of the Scottish
landscape, and encounters another
man (Roger Livesey), with whom she
falls suddenly in love. With odd,
dreamlike interludes, symbolism,
sense of the supernatural and
romance it is a work of real and
enduring genius.
Assault on Precinct 13 (15)
SUN 1 JAN 8.35PM
A cult classic by
seminal director
John Carpenter,
whose early
work features
prominently in EIFF history. Influenced
by classic westerns and cult horror,
Carpenter’s second feature was
described in our 1977 catalogue as
“a powerhouse thriller” in which
“an almost deserted police station
is subjected to an all-night raid by
hordes of suicidal hoodlums”.
WELCOME to Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2017! We are extremely proud that Unique
Events have produced Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, on behalf of the City of Edinburgh
Council, for the last 24 years. We have watched the festival grow from strengthto-strength
and helped position Edinburgh and Scotland as a world renowned
winter destination. We’d like to thank our extraordinarily hard working team
at Unique, who look after every aspect of the festival but also the people
throughout the city and beyond who help deliver this spectacular programme
of world-class events each year. We look forward to welcoming you all to
the ‘Home of Hogmanay’ and kick-starting 2017 at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay!
