Generally, debates about abortion focus mainly on politics and the law. Numbers
of questions arouses, should termination of pregnancy be forbidden and treated
like the murder, or remain a legal choice available to all women? There are more
fundamental ethical questions hidden inside the debates which are not always
given the specific attention they deserve. Few believe that the law shouldn’t
formulate morality, but all good laws are based upon moral values. If failure
occurs in discussing those values openly, it can obscure important discussion.
Is fetus a person with rights?
Number of debated takes place regarding the legality of pregnancy termination
that involves debating the legal status of the fetus. If the fetus is a person, pro-life
activists argue then termination is murder and should be illegal. Whereas, prochoice
activists states that abortion must be justified as necessary to women’s
bodily autonomy. If fetus is considered as a person then why would it be called as
fetus and not the person? Fetus is basically a fertilized egg formed as a cause of
intercourse activity. This shows that abortion may or may not be ethical.
Conceivably the state can’t force a woman to carry pregnancies to term; it could
be the most ethical choice. Hence, in some countries the law allows women to

end their unwanted pregnancies within 10 weeks of gestation with the help of
medical abortion. Doctors living in such places mostly recommend women to buy
abortion pills to cancel their undesired early pregnancy.
Are there ethical obligations of Women to the fetus?
If a woman desires to have sex and/or didn’t use contraception appropriately,
then she knew that pregnancy might result. Pregnancy means having a new life
budding inside the womb. Whether the fetus is a human being or not and
whether the states takes a position on pregnancy termination or not, it’s
debatable that women have some sort of ethical responsibility to the fetus. May
be this obligation is not strong enough to eliminate pregnancy termination as an
option.
Is it ethical to force women to carry their pregnancies?
Suppose if legalized cancellation of pregnancy is eliminated, then the law will be
stated that will force women to carry pregnancies to term. It might happen that
usage of women’s body would be made to provide a place where a fetus can
develop into a baby. This is the ideal of pro-life activists, but would it follow moral
principles? Not allowing females a choice over being pregnant and procreating is
not at all well-suited with justice in a liberal, democratic state. If anti-choice

protestors feel that the fetus is a person and abortion immoral, it shouldn’t be
banned through unethical means.
Morals and consequences of sexual activity:
Pregnancy habitually occurs as a consequence of sexual activity. Therefore,
questions about the ethics of pregnancy termination should include questions
about the ethics of sex itself. Some seem to assume or even argue that
intercourse should carry consequences whether one of which might be
pregnancy. Thus, it is unethical to cease those consequences whether through
contraception or cancellation of pregnancy. Hence, not permitting women to buy
abortion pill to prevent from the burden of unwanted childbearing would not be
ethical.
