As soon as the riders finished their Round the Houses event they had to head off to the start of the off-road leg of the prologue, which was set up at the top of Bushman’s Pass. In fact this site was to be the start and finish for each days’ leg. The organisers did a great job of setting up a mini town on the side of the hill, and it throbbed with excitement and energy the entire weekend. Each rider set off at will, and raced against the clock to set a time for the Friday start. At the end of a long day the time sheets showed the top riders pretty much as everyone expected with Brett Swanepoel taking just a few seconds less than Graham Jarvis to put himself in the lead of the Roof on day one. The rest of the field roared in pretty much as in their order on the program. One or two guys ran out of fuel before the end, which was worrying, especially as most of the bikes had very little fuel as they crossed the line. Perhaps it was the extreme heat and altitude making the bikes run richer than expected. An exception were the two KTM fuel injected prototypes, which were visibly running superbly and which finished with more than a half tank of fuel. It is said their oil to petrol ratio is in the region of 200:1! A 6am start had the boys on the road, well the track really, and within minutes the Gold class settled into a pattern which it was to maintain for the next two days. Jarvis, who normally likes to pace the leading rider and the pull a lead over the last half of the race changed his tactic and took the lead early, chased very closely by “Freddy” Gomez. At every reporting post and on the internet race map they remained glued together, followed by Teasdale, Bouverie, Gutzeit and Billy Bolt. Overseas journalists who follow the overseas hard enduro races predicted that Billy would, as usual, hang on to the leaders with his blinding pace, and then crash. They were wrong, he hung on doggedly right to the end… watch him next year now that he knows what the Roof is about. A huge crowd of spectators and helpers spread themselves across half of Lesotho following the race from the many service and spectator points provided by the organisers. No Roof has ever been followed by as many spectators as this one, and the event, which has always been important to Lesotho Tourism, must now be the single most important money generator they have.
