Paradise...
Explore the natural side of the 1000
Islands. The 1000 Islands Region is filled
with activities that take advantage of this
natural paradise. Clayton offers an outdoor
recreational playground to enjoy with local
fishing, kayaking, diving, snorkeling, golfing,
hiking, biking and camping.
For two centuries, Clayton has been the
center of 1000 Islands fishing action. Years
ago, the local fishing guides plied the waters
off Clayton carrying the wealthy and famous
on their annual fishing excursions. Now
the local guides have powerboats equipped
with the latest fishing tackle, electronic
equipment and safety gear to ensure
passengers’ safety and comfort. Your captain
will ensure an exciting experience, and may
even end your trip with a traditional shore
dinner.
The clear waters of the St. Lawrence provide
a fishing experience second to none. In fact,
USA Weekend named Clayton and the 1000
Islands the number one bass fishing spot
in the country! There are any number of
game fish, sure to thrill the angler of every
ability. Northern pike, walleye, bass, perch,
panfish and the elusive trophy muskellunge
continue to challenge fishermen from all over
the country and attract professional fishing
tournaments year after year.
Fishing maps are available, along with plenty
of bait, tackle and advice, at local bait shops
for those who would rather fish on their
own. Launch your own boat and venture
out to discover your own “hot spot” or bring
along a folding chair and cast off from the
dock at Frink Park. For your convenience,
fishing licenses are available at many locations
throughout Clayton.
The St. Lawrence River is one of the premier
diving sites in the country, and Clayton boasts
the first natural features dive park in the
Thousand Islands. Underwater enthusiasts
will want to dive right into the clear waters of
the St. Lawrence River to explore many wrecks
that rest on the riverbed.
The crystal clear water provides breathtaking
access to the natural beauty just meters
beneath the surface. The water clarity
provides excellent underwater visibility.
Horizontal visibility of 50-70 feet at 100-foot
depths is not unusual. The River is the resting
place of hundreds of shipwrecks, some dating
back to the late 1700’s.
